We are not really having this forum to pick Joni apart. It would be much more creative and challenging to find the things in each achievement which enhance, rather than to search for inadequacy. The law of the universe dictates that we won't all be satisfied with everything; but, is that not the perfect opportunity to see light where it before did not shine? I too needed to sit back and consider what I was hearing. There is so much anticipation with each of Joni's creative contributions, that the expectation can sometimes mire the immediacy of contact between the music and the ear (heart). Everything represents a state of mind, and if TTT is a painting of Joni's current emotional landscape, we have nothing to criticize. True representation is truth, which is holy. Great respect to you all. Danny Costello P.S. 'Face Life' is a masterpiece. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Oct 1998 07:21:59 +0000 From: "Deb Messling" Subject: Another act?! oh no! I bought "Hejira" and NRH simultaneously in 1993. Hejira totally blew me away, and no matter how often I listen to it, I still get goosebumps each time I do. Same with "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" on NRH. I nearly immediately fell in love with most of the songs on TI. To the contrary, other songs on NRH took much longer to get acquainted with. Only very recently, I literally discovered "Two Grey Rooms". It's now one of my favorite Joni songs, and I can't believe I left it out way back then when making my car tapes. I really wonder how and where TTT will fit into my personal Jonimap . Chances are though, it's gonna be rather "valley" than "mountain top". I still have the feeling I've heard it all before -- besides "Lead Balloon", which I do not like at all. That song really seems to split the audience apart!!! The only song I really like is "Harlem in Havanna". I also like those broad orchestral synthesized background sounds, as in "Man From Mars" and especially "My Best To You". But then, these are not the things which make Joni who she is -- things which others can do better and will do better. And particularly the lyrics on "Man From Mars" are pretty boring IMHO. "The pain won't go away", "Swallowed by the dark", "no grace to my heart" -- that's pretty kitschy for Joni's standards, and I've heard it many times before. One good thing though -- this really is the first album where I don't need a dictionary in order to get what she means. Now, has my English improved, or are perhaps her lyrics flatter than they usually are??? Just my 2 cents'... Lori San Antonio ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Oct 1998 00:52:39 +0100 From: Marian Russell Subject: Joni in German, spirit of Jaco, & real Joni guitar sounds in standard tuning Well, I was just standing in the underground station yesterday, and I happened to turn my gaze toward a movie screen used for advertising and I saw the name of Joni Mitchell, something about a tribute to her 30 years of music and the name of a Theatre in Vienna's 1st District. I'm not typically a concert or theater goer - don't *ever* look to see what's on in Vienna - hardly ever ride the public transport - so it really was like one of those moments of serendipity that people are always describing here - that I turned my head at just the right moment - - that my eyes just happened to be focused enough to zero in on this important information. As soon as I had a chance, I called the theater and was pleased to learn that the first performance would occur on the next day, so I reserved a ticket. The title of the show was "I Always Smile When I'm Nervous - Joni Mitchell - A Legend of the 60's" and the trio who put it together consisted of of Christina Zurbruegg (voice and vocals), Reinhard Ziegerhofer (basses) and Gerald Gradwohl (electric guitars). The venue was a cozy little theatre/cafe which could seat maybe a maximum of 50 people and nearly all of the seats were taken. I sat right up front so I could take pictures. On the stage and all around the room were color enlargements of Joni's album covers. I felt like I was at a Jonifest! There were so many beautiful moments in the show that it's hard to collect all of my thoughts, but I will try. Maybe I should start by saying that the idea was conceived by the bass player, Reinhard Ziegerhofer, who has been a Joni fan for more than 20 years. His first album was Hejira and it is his favorite. As the show began, the lights in the theater were dimmed as Christina, from off the stage, began reading The Hissing of Summer Lawns in German to the sound of a rather hypnotic riff played repeatedly on an acoustic guitar. When she finished, the lights on the stage grew brighter and the three musicians appeared and performed a really rocking version of Night in the City. This was followed by a representative sample of Joni's songs sung in English interspersed with readings of lyrics from other Joni songs translated into German. The translations were taped to the backs of the albums to which they belonged, so as Christina read the German words, the audience could see the album covers. I thought this was a really nice touch. The German translations of Joni's lyrics were incredibly well-crafted and totally captured the heart, the laughter, and the artist's descriptive eye of Joni's English words. It was truly amazing to me that someone was able to express the spirit of Joni's words so beautifully in the German language. Among the songs translated were The Pirate of Penance, Barangrill, Raised on Robbery and a wrenchingly beautiful Amelia. Apparently, the translations into German were done by Christina with the help of a friend named Richard who is also a Joni fan. Christina's readings were absolutely riveting - I was mesmerized! Her stage presence was really nice, too. You could tell that she really loves Joni - loves the music - loves the lyrics. It was great to hear her. Reinhard used at least three different basses during the show: a large concert upright bass that he played with a bow at one point, a six-stringed electric bass that he kindly explained to me after the show how to tune, and a fretless four-stringed electric bass. He could play all the Jaco riffs! I was amazed! He was always in tune and his playing was very relaxed and sensitvely executed. I could easily have listened to him alone for hours. I was also impressed with the musicianship of the electric guitar player, Gerald. He is not particularly a Joni fan - knew of her before two months ago, but had never played any of her music until the group got together. He somehow managed to transcribe, in less than two months, Joni-sounding renditions of the setlist of 12 songs using only standard tuning without the help of any songbooks or JMDL Guitar Files! I was especially impressed that he could play a Joni-sounding Refuge of the Roads in standard tuning! His lead guitar work was truly stunning, and at one point in the show he played a solo improvisation that was like from some other-worldly heavenly sphere - lightening riffs executed effortlessly, interspersed with harmonics from all over the fretboard blended subtly with soft synthesized sounds. I wish I had it on tape, it was so indescribably beautiful. Anyway, after the show I talked to all of them a little bit. It was really nice to meet some Austrian Joni fans. None of them knew about JMDL or JoniMitchell.com, so now they do. Maybe we'll get some more European members as a result! I've got to hit the sack or I'll never be able to wake up in the morning. Good night to all!
