Good advice about the "petty wars" too. You are truly cool, and we are lucky to benefit from your artistry. Michael ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Oct 1998 00:12:45 -0700 From: Anne Madden Subject: Producer for Joni Barbara and Howard M suggested that maybe Joni should give some thought to getting a new producer next time. I echo their sentiments. I also agree with their comments about Larry Klein producing other people's cd's. The example given was that the one of Shawn Colvin's CD's (I think it's called Cover) produced by Larry had a Joni sound. He did the same with the Irish singer, Mary Black when he produced the "Shine" CD. She is not a jazz singer, yet when he was finished with this CD he had tried to turn her into Joni - with disastrous results - it is her worst album so far in my opinion. I remember hearing Joni in an interview talk about the fact that she prefers to produce her own albums because she doesn't want anyone changing her ideas and she used the analagy "no-one told Picasso how or want to paint, so why would I ....". She did not want to lose creative control! Howard gave a great example - Daniel Lanois producing Emmylou Harris' Wrecking Ball album. He did an absolutely masterful job and Emmylou who is so highly respected and has enormous integrity in the music world, credits him with coming up with new and innovative ideas that she never would have thought of. She has mentioned how wary she was at first at some of his suggestions but she learned to trust him. This particular album was different than anything she had ever done before. They won a Grammy for Album of the Year. He also did a great job producing U2's album - The Joshua Tree. Lucinda Williams is another example. She certainly had her share of collaborators on her album "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, touted by Rollingstone Magazine as Album of the Year and the "90's version of Blonde on Blonde". At one point Steve Earle was the producer and certainly was a contributor, however, she eventually replaced him with Roy Bittan - Lucinda is the co-producer - the results are amazing. Much as I am a huge fan of Joni's, I honestly believe her ego would get in the way and not allow her to have someone else produce one of her albums! Please don't jump all over me for saying this but just because someone is a poetic genius and can write brilliant lyrics doesn't necessarily mean they are good record producers! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Oct 1998 21:52:07 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Impressions of the Tiger (All Joni Content - Long) Mark wrote: >Some people mentioned Lead Balloon as a failed attempt at a parody of a >hard-rock song. This song brings to my mind a question I've had for quite some time. I remember a few months ago when the "hidden meanings" of "boom-boom pachyderm" and "goat dance" were discussed on this list. I thought, "oh good, I'm not the only one who thought that's what the words really meant." Well, ever since I first heard "Crazy Cries of Love" (back when it was still called "Love's Cries"), I have interpreted the line "Ice cream is melting on a piece of pie" as a very visual reference to sex (you know: heterosexual, post-coital kind of imagery). Think about it. Am I just a dirty-minded pervert in need of a one-way ticket to the Magdalene Laundries, or has anyone else thought this line wasn't really describing what was on the table?
