(was: Anna (aaahna)) Kakki wrote: > When is Joni going to stop harping on Mingus ruining her? We love it now, O.K.? Yes, we do love it! (Although personally, I always have loved it, from first hearing upon its release.) It's a simple fact that Joni has been and continues to be ahead of her time. Perhaps that's the key to popularizing Joni: begin airplay of 20-year-old songs. It worked for the Moody Blues with "Nights In White Satin." Although that song wasn't 20 years old when it finally became popular ... OTOH, a sudden interest in Mingus or DJRD would cause concert audiences to request those old tunes, and we already know that would go over with Joni like ... well, like a "Lead Balloon." I know I'm one of those worshipful ones with respect to Joni. (Please be tolerant of me - I've loved her 3/4ths of my life). as you know, i'm against the 'all joni worship, all the time' but your defenses of her have always moved me. i've been wanting to tell the list; but i haven't found the moment, to say how much your thoughts on 'lead balloon' have justified and expanded my love of that song. and i hope you've picked up that i love the album very deeply. we're not really on the same side in a lot of these disputes, (boy, joni blows her mouth off too much...) but i love that you're there. defending her so eloquently. you and i, not always agreeing but respecting and caring, this is the best of the jmdl. as i've experienced it. in some ways, when i regretted missing the taping, not seeing the paintings was worse. when jmdl video tree 1 first rolled out, i managed to score a complete 'the original returns'. paintings for days. sweet yet painful (on video, fer godsakes). i want to know joni as a painter, and yet i've never seen a joni painting live. >Last I knew, the taping will include a glimpse at these paintings. I have no idea if they will "translate" much better on film, but I would like to see more reviews of them after people have had a chance to view them on PPV. i'm asking you to remind me to review. i may miss the original broadcast, but i'll see it early and may have something to offer. patrick np - kd - drag ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Oct 1998 00:05:12 -0400 From: Roger Walker Subject: Tape List (with JC somewhere in the middle!) It's good to be back! Howard M wrote: >The lyrics of TTT are not great... >They are not nuanced, textured, deep. >They aren't even very poetic. >Take our favorite JM album and compare the lyrics >and you'll see the difference. >I *like* TTT but I do not think it is great. While I might agree that Lead Balloon really sucks the rest of the record shines! Why do people always have to compare an artists new work to their old stuff? I wouldn't like Joni nearly as much if she stuck to a formula. What keeps me interested in her albums is that they are all so different. TTT is a masterpiece lyrically, musically & artistically. The more I hear it the more I adore it. To me it's not her words but rather her phrasing that turns me on. Joni's instrumentation has never sounded better to me. I just love the percussive guitar riff at the beginning of The Crazy Cries Of Love (a song with lyrics as wonderful as anything she's ever done). Oh, & Julie, I'd like to hear Joni cover Vincent by Don McLean... E.T. You might just miss out. I had a very successful trip to Honduras and my families future looks quite bright at the moment. I expect that there is a 90% chance that we will be living in Honduras by JoniFest 1999 (which doesn't mean I will miss out on that event). I also successfully accompanied two more burn cases to the Shriners Hospital, Galveston, Texas today. One little girl is making her second round of treatments for burns and the other her first. Both were very adorable little girls and so full of enthusiasm, despite their ailments. I love working with children and helping to heal them.
