Did any of my other fellow Canucks see the Joni spotlight on MuchMoreMusic tonight? They played the videos for "Night Ride Home" (which I never knew existed), "Chinese Cafe", and "How Do you Stop". It was waaaay too short, but nice to see! About Joni and Don... so did they really break up?? I know that when Don was living here in... hmmm, either 95 or 96, I can't remember which year, probably the latter, since I know it was supposed to be during his second year here, Joni and Don supposedly broke up for a while... this was just the talk in all the staff rooms at the schools, but then again, it could have just been hearsay.. Anyway, maybe "Stay in Touch" was written during that time? Also, does anyone know for sure when they exactly started seeing each other? I remember that when the Saskatoon paper profiled Don in... 94(?), it mentioned that he was her "guest" at her home in L.A. for six months... Damn, I really have to go and track down that article so I will know when it was exactly.. anyway, I was just wondering how long they have actually been together. Of course, I am hoping against hope that they didn't break up... that way, there is a possibility of more Joni sitings in Saskatchewan! One more thing, there is a new 2-cd collection on sale for the launch of MuchMoreMusic, and it includes "How do you stop"!!! Evian ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Oct 1998 02:08:48 -0600 From: Evian Subject: Lack of TTT in Saskatoon TTT is #13 in Calgary, but yet it is all but nonexistent in Saskatoon!!!! I finally couldn't wait for the special order to get here to Prince Albert, so I picked it up in S'toon on Monday... I went to a smaller HMV, and I was in a hurry so I think I might have picked up the only copy. I scanned the store, couldn't find a display, but I thought I might have overlooked it since I was rushing. However, they had a whole empty shelf for the Alanis album, with a bunch of postcards or stickers or some crap on it. Waste of space, hey? Then, last night, we went to S'toon to shop. I didn't make it to Sam the Record Man, but went to this other store, AVE Music or something. I searched their many dislays, and didn't see any Joni! Then I went to the M's, and her place was empty!! I ended up buying Liz Phair since it was on sale, even though I didn't want to buy something from a place that doesn't even support home town talent! I remember in the late 80's Joni said in the paper that S'toon stores don't carry her music and a bunch of store owners wrote in and said "we do so, blah blah blah". Well, obviously, they don't give a rat's ass about her. The opening words to "Lead Balloon" were echoing in my head when I left the mall! Anyway, just thought I would rant. When my daughter and her boyfriend came, Teddy heard it and said, "Kilauren, that song's about you." Well it was- it's about the beginning unsteadiness in a very passionate new relationship. Any time I have a passionate new relationship, that song will come to life in a new way. If it's overly explained, you rob the people whose lives it brushes up against of their own interpretation and their own experience. I know how a song falls differently against your life many times. To keep it alive it has to- you're bringing new expereience to it all the time, and it's not the experience you wrote it with, so it's open to interpretations. It's a kind a dead poet's society thing- tear those pages from your books. The songs shift around- either it means something to you or it doesn't. And that's one reason why I resent the "who is it about?" fixing it in time, "it's about that over there..." No it isn't, it's a mirror- and it reflects you if you take the time to look as you pass by." So, whether this song was written with Don in mind, before Kilauren came along, and it fit Kilauren at the time she heard it, or whether it was written for her and her daughter after they met, or about someone else completely different, I think the only thing that can be gleamed from this interview is that it is about a new relationship, not a break-up. Personally, it doesn't matter to me at all what it is about. I think it is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. It is considered a soft rock station and caters mainly to the babyboomer gang. Yesterday they showed 4 Joni videos - Come in From the Cold (only part of this one was shown); these others were shown in their entirety - Night Ride Home, Chinese Cafe (she was playing piano on this one) and How Do You Stop (with Seal). In between she talked a little. I did tape them. Also her tour with Dylan has been advertised a lot and in their ads at the start of some shows Joni's name and face keep popping up. But you get little sense of her agitation here as she shifts her lyrical focus from childhood recollections of black burlesque review in "Harlem in Havana" to a withering assessment of American military chiefs after the rape of a Japanese girl in "No apologies". Mitchell's lingering conflicts with her mother surface on "Face Lift" and she yearns for what seems an absent lover on "Man From Mars" - except that the "man" turns out to be her missing cat. (You wonder what's up when she sings: "I can't get through the day/Without at least one big boo boo"). Regrettably, Mitchell only hints at her antipathy toward the music industry. "I'm a runaway from the record biz," she declares on the title track. And she probably has good reason for restraint. But the frustrations that almost drove her to quit would make for more absorbing listening than songs about AWOL felines, though cat owners may disagree. Indeed, Mitchell's voice sounds not bitter but contented as she moves through arrangements sewn together with the mellow, understated instrumentation of her digitally tuned guitar and Wayne Shorter's sweet sax lines. There are not memorable melodies a la "Free Man In Paris." But the disc is accessible and her paintings displayed in the album notes ample proof she could have a fallback career as a visual artist should she call it a day as a musician." There are plenty of things that are going through my head--especially after reading some of the emails that are flying around. On arrogance (Joni's) There is a song by the Judybats that talks about hearts and souls--sounds trivial but it describes a heart as a "small squishy thing" and a soul as "large and loud." I liked that idea because its so true--souls ARE large. They ARE loud. If you feel your soul you suddenly realize that it cannot be contained or comprehended in terms of the small little vessel that holds it, albeit temporarily. So--what I am getting at is this: once you realize about souls, everything superficial seems trivial and small. Haven't we all found ourselves in that position before when we looked at another person, the state of the world, the current cigar scandals, whatever and just said--this is bull! Does any of that really matter? I listen to Joni because she's arrogant enough to realize that most of what we experience from day to day means little to our spirit. The first time I heard her music, I was 13 and the song was "cold blue steel out of money, one eye for the beat police." It haunted me. She moved something in my mind and soul that wasn't small or every-day. I bought my TTT cd at Walmart. (I wonder what JM would think about that???) When I was in line there was a lady behind me. She was probably my age, in her business suit, her vegies and her cleaning supplies. She made a comment to me about my JM cd. She wanted to know if Joni Mitchell was still any good. I thought to myself, lady your soul is shrinking. Among those who voted, "anything goes" won out. We already have the NJC subject tag, and most listers do remember to use it when appropriate. Certainly in the last six months we've added members, and majority opinion about what should be included on list may have changed. We can conduct the poll again, and I'll be happy to count the votes again, or someone else can step up to the plate if that seems more fair. Anyone? As I see it, though ... As an unmoderated discussion, 1) there are no limits other than those set by the standards of common courtesy and decency (and even those are ignored at times), and 2) until Les says otherwise, we as list members decide what is acceptable on list. At the bottom of the JMDL front page, Les supports the Blue Ribbon Campaign for Free Speech Online; I think that might suggest Les' sentiments. > discussing joni's lyrics brings just about any subject into play. i just don't see any workable way that this list can be limited to subjects that offend noone. Everyone becomes offended about some post or another, at least once in awhile. My suggestion is, if you're planning to stick around the JMDL, you need to grow a thicker skin and go with the flow. Indeed, if her new release, "Taming the Tiger" (Reprise), illustrates one thing, it's that Mitchell's great craft and defiant spirit remain undiminished by decades of recording and acclaim. Rather than mellowing over the years, she seems more determined than ever to express herself candidly in a pop world she believes is almost entirely driven by hype and profits. She vents her contempt for the record industry's starmaker machinery on the album's title track, declaring, "I'm a runaway from the record biz/ from the hoods in the hood and the whiny white boys./ Boring!" Say what you will about "Taming the Tiger," boring it's not. Mitchell explores a wide range of themes on the album, addressing both social and personal issues, and in so doing reveals anew her special gift for composing artful, thought-provoking ballads laced with airy jazz harmonies. Two of the most memorable songs have a revealing autobiographical slant. "Harlem in Havana" concerns a young white girl who becomes entranced by the sound of black music, a tale inspired by Mitchell's childhood encounter with a traveling burlesque show. "Auntie Ruthie would have cried/ if she knew/ we were on the inside," she sings. Another chapter of her life apparently inspired "Face Lift," which involves a mother and daughter trying to square their irreconcilable views of sexuality. Other songs take a metaphoric shape, a literary device Mitchell mastered a long time ago. And yet for all her deft wordplay, there are times when she doesn't ask the listener to read between the lines. Anger and anguish are clearly evident in her searing verse and in the sound of her voice, which has grown darker and more expressive. On "No Apologies," she does nothing to conceal the outrage she felt upon hearing how the military dealt with a recent incident of rape involving American servicemen in Okinawa: "The general offered no apologies/ He said, 'The soldiers erred in judgment/ They should have hired a hooker!'/ No apologies/ To the outraged Japanese/ No 'Sorry little girl'/ The pigs just took her." Mitchell often relies on unusual guitar and keyboard harmonies to create an atmospheric glow. Several of the sparse arrangements are further enhanced by the soulful contributions of her longtime collaborator, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, and the nimble jazz drummer Brian Blade. The most surprising performance, though, finds Mitchell reprising the Sons of the Pioneers' sentimental hit "My Best to You," with the help of pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz. The old cowboy song evokes a world brimming with good cheer, an old-fashioned notion that helps bring this frequently disquieting album to a comforting close. Joni Mitchell likes to sink her jaws into the hand that feeds her. And lately, she has been fed a feast. Her last album, 1994's "Turbulent Indigo," resurrected her critical reputation after a decade of scorn, winning her two Grammys and countless rave reviews. On top of that, having her old hit, "Big Yellow Taxi," sampled by Janet Jackson last year introduced a whole new generation to her genius. So how does Mitchell react to all these hosannas? With suspicion and a sneer. In the title track to her new album, she sings: "Accolades and honors/One false move and you're a goner." Why court success, she asks, in a world you have contempt for? In one swift couplet, she kills off all commercial music. "The hoods in the 'hood and the whiny white kids. Boring!" she announces, swiftly dispatching both rap and modern rock. "Every disc a poker chip/every song just a one-night stand." You tell 'em, Joni! Once again, she is playing the role she was born to play: the righteous skeptic, bordering on the paranoid coot. Even though she may trip over the line between the two, she deserves admiration for never pulling a punch. On her new album, she lands more than a few bracing blows on lawyers, slovenly lovers and cold businessmen, and even on the kisser of her own mother. And this is one of Mitchell's mellower records! Certainly, it's got nothing on the vitriol of "Turbulent Indigo," which found her aiming brickbats at the Church, the legal profession, Jackson Browne, nationalism and even death, challenging that dark specter to a battle of wits and nearly winning. Sketch Artistry "Taming the Tiger" doesn't have that kind of breadth, violence or ambition. At just over 40 minutes (including two cover songs), it feels slight by Mitchell's standards. It's more a series of sketches than one of her epic canvases like "For the Roses" or "Hejira." It's closer in scope to her pretty 1991 LP, "Night Ride Home." Thankfully, though, it avoids the pitfalls of her most disappointing albums of the '80s, featuring words worthy of poetry and music that finds its own stride. She doesn't flinch from the genre that has caused her the most commercial trouble: jazz. She opens with "Harlem in Havana," whose lyrics celebrate her first introduction to that swinging style as the Devil's music glorious and forbidden. Mitchell's phrasing keeps a periodic hold on jazz throughout, though more melodies mine her odd brand of folk-rock. Her voice slips around the tunes with a syncopated cunning, but she's shorter of breath as each year ticks by. After sucking on cigarettes for decades now, her voice itself smokes. At least that pays off in a mature sex appeal; she's sounding more and more like the husky jazz chanteuse Annie Ross. But the production gauze she uses to cover her flaws creates a distance that takes a few listens to hear through. Once you do, there's lots of beauty to savor in both the melodies and in Mitchell's eccentric instrumentation. The music of "Stay in Touch" has a warmth that gets under your skin, while "Love Puts on a New Face" has a chorus that pops like Champagne. Much of the magic comes from the oddly tuned guitar that Mitchell plays. She bases most songs on its chiming tones, bouncing off the oozy bass lines of Larry Klein and the jazz filigrees of saxist Wayne Shorter. It's a kind of sonic fantasia, so airy that it seems to float. If the result gives her music the play of a balloon, her lyrics provide a quick prick. In "Lead Balloon," she tosses a drink in the face of a crass businessman, saying he has "the heart of a Bonaparte," while in "Happiness Is the Best Facelift," her prudish mother shames her for having sex in her house with a man she's not married to. "Why is this joy not allowed?" Mitchell says. "For God's sake mama/I'm middle-aged." Much like 1976's "Song for Sharon," the song finds Mitchell's mom trying to snap her out of the spell of love. But Mitchell's valor in the face of romantic risk forms the core of her art and character. Mitchell continues to throw her heart into oncoming traffic in "Love Puts on a New Face," where she surfs over the daily waverings of attraction, while in "The Crazy Cries of Love," she calls relationships a lunacy shared by two. None of these songs holds the pain of Mitchell's boldest work. But that seems to be by design. Tellingly, she chose to close the album on a generous note, a cover of "Here's to You," offering a toast to all, a reminder that "each new day is a kiss." She seems to have devised this album more as a wink to the truthful than an assault on the cowardly. But the result only proves that even in a second-tier work, Mitchell remains love's bravest advocate, its hardest bard. ========================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Oct 1998 17:14:13 EDT From: LRFye@aol.com Subject: Re: joni list content (again!!) - NJC Ken wrote: > My God, on the Joni Mitchell list that would be sacrilege! > Can you imagine: How many blondes does it take to tune a guitar..... If I was ever going to plagiarize a review of TTT to call my own, it would be the one from the NY Daily News (with the exception of the possibly incorrect attribution to Jackson B.) As for a "local" review, I duly gave my workmate Brad a complimentary copy of TTT on Friday as part of my missionary work. He was very happy and fell in love with the paintings, especially the one of Joni and the doe. He emailed me this weekend raving and raving about the songwriting, music and the VG-8 sound. This gratifies me a little because he is the leader of a metallish hard rock band which has a bit of a bad-ass persona (although to me he sounds like leaded Nick Drake!). He is no slouch, either - the band just received three nominations for the local Rock City awards and he won as vocalist of the year. These are particularly exciting months for us, after long spells of not seeing anything new about our diva, so I look forward to more rounds of concerts and the chances to meet many more of you soon. Reading all the reviews of TTT that so many of you have searched and posted is greatly appreciated too. Also last week I had three incidences of real life kindness bestowed upon me by listmembers: Thanks go to Heather for sending the Al DiMeola tape sampler. He is something special, and so is Heather for taking the time to compile it and make the nice J-card and ship it to me. Julie sent me the infamous NYTimes Sunday article, and I agree with her and Sherrie and others, that the photo and layout is particularly unflattering and a hack job for sure. I am thrilled to have it though, for some perverse reason... Roberto sent me his just-released (same day as TTT!) CD of his musical group Viveza, called "Tango Tango", a compilation of world Tango classics. I knew our Roberto was an accomplished musician-pianist, but had no idea of his credentials and affiliations in the world of classical music, and now I find out he plays guitar also. How fortunate we are to have him in our membership! I recommend this fine Tango disc. It is full of background information on the history of tango music, stylistic elements, and descriptions of European, Artgentine, and American tango. Written by Steven Daly, the piece includes three black & white photos of Joni- one candid shot taken recently, one photo at the Newport Jazz Fest in 1969, and one more of Joni performing in concert at UCLA this past May. There's also a drawing on the index page of Joni wearing a flat hat and looking rather like a combination of a blonde Madonna and Boy George in his "Do You Really Wanna Hurt Me" days. The article is a positive profile that includes a good review of Joni's new album, Taming The Tiger. Mr. Daly, however, seems to despise one song, "Lead Balloon," calling it "an ill-advised rocker" and "the album's sole blemish." It's interesting to note here that this song is rumoured to be about Jann Wenner, the creator of Rolling Stone mag. Is it a coincidence that their reviewer hates this song? Perhaps. Still no official album review for TTT in the RS "Recordings" section, which one might expect to be in the same issue as this profile. But not yet. Since nearly all reviews of the new album in magazines and newspapers have been positive, I'm waiting for RS to drop a bomb soon, probably in their next issue. Also in the same issue is the 23rd annual RS Readers Poll ballot. Readers can vote on different categories including Best Album, Best Tour, Best Female Musician, Best Album Cover, all of which could truthfully have Joni's name written in as your vote. You know, it's a good idea for all of us to band together and send in ballots. It's on page 36. Another way that we as a group can be helpful to Joni is to call our local cable company and ask if they're airing the JM TV Special (available through Viewers Choice) on the evening of November 6th. If they say no, or act totally in the dark, then tell them you want them to air Joni's show. Viewer calls (and letters) really can influence programming decisions. Also call your local radio station and ask the DJ to play a song from Taming the Tiger. We can truly make a difference.
