Also.. we've got hotel suites, private driver/"party van" and a GREAT blues bar that stays open til 3:00am on the Indy Agenda! Performers that play Indy (like Clapton, Van Morrison & Prince) have stopped to hang-out and jam there after their concerts! Who knows... I, for one, am really feeling lucky! An acoustic guitar is resonant, the tones reverberate and hang in the guitar, in the wood, in the air. This VG8 doesn't do that. There is a difference between acoustic instruments and electric ones and that cannot be denied. And they are all good--but not when there is no variation, no subtlety. Electric piano are very different sounding from acoustic piano. Add digital to the mix and you are not getting perfection, you are getting chrome notes that bang like metal. I don't want all folk or acoustic or no changes in a person's musical career but I also don't want monotony in tone or texture or melody. >4. I need to point out that I am one of two Howards on the list. The other Howard defended JM against journalists. I am the same Howard who wrote the post about TTT and received two responses, one from pj, privately and here, and one privately from another person. I was surprised at this. I have felt snubbed in the past few weeks by the list when I post. As pj said, shunned, like an Amish shunning. I felt this before pj said anything about it. > >5. I am slightly to the left on the pedestrian nature of the lyrics. I agree >they were not as rich as her former works. But they had the Joni edge, and >that was fine. I didn't really like the led balloon but I did like her sass >in that song. The title track was wonderful. The big boo hoo was fine for me >as well. (It was her cat that was lost.) It didn't offend me. I will look at the lyrics again. The boo hoo sounded just fine to me and I don't understand why anyone is making a fuss about it. Unless they've read all the previous JM lyrics. When I say that TTT is not Hejira, I don't want to have another Hejira, I want to have another album that reaches the heights of Hejira, that displays the genius of Hejira--it can be a completely different sounding album, I don't care, but I do want the soul and depth and surprise of a Hejira. Or Hissing of Summer Lawns. or Dog Eat Dog. >Last thought. Joni said this morning, her painting is more important to he >than her music. That is where she spends her time. I think TTT says that. I >think the best quality to the whole disc is the cover. That is where the rich >detail is we're used to hearing. Only now it is seen, not heard. The cover >shows the present Joni best. Even better than the music. When I heard Trouble Man, I was stoked for TTT--this was a Joni singing like I had rarely heard her, with heart, soul and lungs poured into the songs. That does not happen here--on TTT--it is almost as if she were bored but wanted to do it one last time. I found myself looking at the paintings--really looking at them closely, looking for the details and the meanings and the resonance. AS pj said, that's what I listened to before but when I listen to this, I don't hear that. I see it, however. I can't wait for Herbie Hancock now. And the album of standards I heard Joni say she wants to do. But as I said in my post, I will listen to TTT forever, just as I listen to all JMusic forever. Mediocre Joni is still better than almost anyone else. Thank you, pj for the response. I appreciate your recognition and your words. Since everyone is rushing off to the CD stores these days to buy Queen Joan's TTT. I also want to bring attention to Janis Ian. Janis is trying to raise money for a scholarship in her Mom's name. One of the items being auctioned is a concert in your living room. IMHO, Janis Ian is in Joni's league ( a rare stratosphere according to Joni, confidence is one thing ; pomposity another). Before I was 17, I had "Between the Lines" for which Janis won a grammy and remember what she said when she accepted, "It's about time." She is a musical genius and unlike Joni she had some very very very tough financial times. So, I just want to bring attention to Janis's page http://www.songs.com/janisian. I also highly recommend anything she's done. It will be a welcome addition to your music library. If you don't have it, I highly recommend "Between the Lines" and anything else Janis has done. - -Chili (Who expects to be burned at the stake!) PS. One of the items Janis is auctioning off is a concert in your living room. The last one went for only $2500. Imagine Joni doing that? Doubt it! She bitched about being paid $450K for "A Day in the Garden". Lately thinking Joni is SIQUOMB-She is Queen Ungrateful Of Materialism and Bitching. SIQUOMB- Isn't she? I have no problem with howards post. I liked is post very much and my major problem was that it forced me to see what i did not want to see and that was a shift in Joni's efforts from music to art. I never thought he was looking for a new Hejira, but rather a sound of compatible quality and we both don't think we have that on TTT, and that is a hard thing to admit, especially on this list. 2. I did make a mistake in crediting howard with steve p.'s post about the chicago concert. Kudo's to steve for his post the other week. Howard has made several excellent posts as well and I valued his judgement, even on a delicate issue. 3. I hold my ground on the VG8. Its continued use eliminates some of the other resources Joni used before. 4. None of this is bad, if we see it in light of the first point. Joni has moved her love from music to art. That much she has said, even this morning on national tv this morning. 5. Any new Joni music is wonderful and welcome. I have listened to TTT for almost three straight days and will continue to do so. I like TTT. I also think Joni has made better albums. 6. I don't think Joni has ever made better art and I think her art is becoming of the same quality as her music. I think her TTT paintings are Hejira quality. pj - --part0_907378219_boundary-- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 21:30:40 EDT From: JRMCo1@aol.com Subject: On Joni the Painter In a message dated 98-10-02 14:13:41 EDT, PMcfad@aol.com writes: << Joni said this morning, her painting is more important to her than her music. Only now it is seen, not heard. The cover shows the present Joni best. Even better than the music.>> Insightful analysis, pj, but for the life of me, I hope you're wrong. I'm not quite ready to render a thorough review of TTT yet (I've only listened to it twice), but my early impression is that it won't rank in my Joni top five. But that's, okay. The music is still brilliant in many ways, just different ways now. Jazz ways, mostly. "Harlem in Havana" grabs me for its layers-of-sound quality, and the aural depth of field she achieves with the carnival barker in the background. These are very intelligent innovative production values. She does wonderful things with syncopation and tonal colorations, like the senuous quality of the train- like sounds on "Crazy Cries of Love," for instance. That song and "Facelift" have emerged as my early favorites lyrically and musically. Gives me pause to think that Joni didn't even write the lyrics to the former. Joni's artistry and expertise puts on a new face with this release. Writing lyrics is one area where I can imagine that Joni's creative energy might be siphoned off for her higher love of painting. She has said that she puts alot of time and energy and meditation into her writing. Surely, her painting would require no less devotion. Which brings me to my main point: I hope Joni won't stop making music to pursue painting exclusively. Don't get me wrong - I love the timeless art of painting. I love sculpture and architecture, too. But I own no Rodins and no Sistene Chapels. Know what I mean? Joni's paintings are for the most part confined to a warehouse somewhere. Perhaps a few hang on the walls of people who have the money, or if they are some kind of friend to Joni. I can only buy digital recordings and concert tickets. Honestly, if it weren't for my burning love of Joni's music, I would have precious little interest in her painting. I guess if I could see her 'perform' a painting...I would really dig that. To actually see her gestural strokes on canvas and observe her prepare her pallet, choosing her blues and paint brush sizes in the late afternoon sun. I bet she dances a little while she paints. I would pay dearly to see that. But I don't want a lithograph. Painting may be Joni's path to self-actualization. Maybe it's sort of a Cat Stevens type thing. If so, that pleases me immensely, because I love her for what her music has meant to my life and I want her to be embrace her raison d'etre. We all should if/when we find it. - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Oct 1998 18:32:19 -0700 From: Mark or Travis Subject: TTT - one of several first impressions Listening to the TTT version of Facelift for the first time. Terry ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 22:55:47 -0400 From: trxschwa Subject: 90 minutes of mostly recent joni (jc) hey michael, this caught my attention, because i've been making mush tapes (as i call them) more than usual lately. i've always had this hobby. i try to aim for some of the satisfying flow of a great album often starting with a strong rocker (or dance-beat) song, going with a swing or waltz for the second, then a ballad, and getting into a variable rhythm for 90 or 100 minutes. the first and last song on each side of a mushtape should be foolproof. when i focus on one artist, i proselytise, (as i must). i like to throw in oddities. cover songs. live versions of album tracks. and album songs presented in small clusters, 2 or 3 songs at a time. you might consider widening your net just a little bit. i like your choice of albums, though. approx 5 songs from each, i guess. here goes: from 'hejira: - -black crow, because joni has never rocked better. this could open the tape. - -coyote - -blue motel room - -amelia and -hejira, but i think you should use the shadows and light sequence including pat's solo. everyone knows pat metheny, but they may not know that his band toured with joni, right at the earliest peak of his fame. i think this sequence should close a side of your tape. these kinds of surprises are what makes a mush work. -furry, but use the s&l version. from 'night ride home' (my third favorite joni album, ever!): - -nothing can be done - i just love this song, it's a fantastic singalong and such a rueful lyric. also, it's not that easy to find really driving rhythmic tracks in joni's work (especially in the albums you've chosen and all of her early work). 'nothing...' is really easy to program. - -cherokee louise- the socially conscious joni has almost never been more convincing than in this so personal song. i'm a music first man, so the shuffle and shorter caught me first, and then the tragedy of the story. this'll probably be a little scorpion sting in your tape. - -night ride home- this song is so damn likeable, and it just doesn't fade. she opened the whole west coast tour 98 with it. give this song as a gift, after some tough song (like furry) - -slouching toward bethlehem, this is a definition of 'difficult joni', it's rhythmically confusing, the build from beginning to end (especially in the percussion) is completely unexpected, and it's a setting of a classic english lit poem. still, i think it's one of joni's highest achievements, and her live performances of it this year have been incendiary (i actually lost eyebrows and chesthair). it must be on your tape. from 'taming the tiger' - -harlem in havana- sounds like the first big number in a new musical, which makes me love it. i also think it's the best production on the album. - -taming the tiger- because it's a magnificent song. i think it qualifies as tough-joni, though, you should place it carefully. - -the crazy cries of love- another deep, deep fave for me. i don't know how anyone could hear this song as is it on the album or as it was performed this year and not be enchanted. you could place this anywhere... -my best to you. i love this, love the production, love the simple country swing to the song. but i'm not sure a joni-newbie could appreciate her being this cornball. many reviews haven't. the song is joni's 'wind beneath my wings' and if that is a problem for you, don't give the song. -stay in touch. sublime. -man from mars- this is such a tough call. many of us have heard the first version, pulled from the 'grace of my heart' soundtrack. it's quite beautiful, and the album version, which we heard a couple of months later, seems just not as genuine or good. but on ttt, 'man from mars' sounds just right and in synch with the album and it has blown away so many who never heard the earlier version. so you should include the album version if you want to. but if the gomh version is released (as an extra on one of the singles from ttt, if there is any justice in the world) please include that. hell, my laws of mush-tape-interest say put one version on one side and the other on the other. from 'turbulent indigo' - -turbulent indigo (a great song) - -sunny sunday, esp cause it's quirky and fits in anywhere... for some reason, ti the album doesn't really float my boat. i like and almost recommend these songs: -how do you stop (the seal connection helps) -the magdalene laundries - i love the song, but it sure stops conversation... -borderline (but file under 'difficult'. 'you snipe so steady, you snub so snide' is unlikely to win converts on first hearing) from 'outside of your limits' i don't know your production deadline on this tape but i suspect it should be spiked with joni's album version of marvin gaye's 'trouble man' (avail on kyle eastwood's recently released album) as well as joni's vocals on 'summertime' and 'the man i love' (on herbie hancock's studio gershwin album, due oct 20) i've heard all of these. i'd call them vital components of joni propaganda right now. Disciples of Joni, I want to make a mix to feature songs only from "Hejira," "Night Ride Home," "Turbulent Indigo," and "Taming the Tiger." What are the best songs from these albums, in your opinion? AND what do they mean, in your opinion? Any feedback you can provide me with would be greatly appreciated. If you want to know why I am requesting this info, read below. If you would grace me with a response to (mgoerz@bastyr.edu) I would be truly greatful. Thanks in advance for any responses! Follow me here...A couple of my friends and I are drawn together by our love of music. We feel that if one likes an artist, all in the group should be exposed. Therefore, we created our own music trading circle known as the "Rack Oglers Football League" (based on a friend mocking me when I asked what "ROFL" meant). So anyways, my faux-record company, M-Tel (consisting of me, my cats, and Joni loving wife), which in the past did "Joni Mitchell: A Tentative Experience" featuring more of her older hits for the group, is thinking that the next project MUST be another Joni compilation. I want to feature songs from the abovementioned albums, because I like the tone and feel they have. When I made the original tape (titled "Tentative" because friends were at the time were not familiar nor seemed excited about the release), I was only breaking into Joni's work. Since then, I have found a love for this next wave of her work (or so I like to call it that). Now to make this fun for me because I live in a fantasy world (Walter Mitty), I like to accompany the tape with an official press release, promotional item, and cover art/liner notes. This is my creative outlet. The process I take is highly important. So I figured, what better way to enhance the process than by utilizing the input of the masses that know Joni's work best. So I am imagining a lengthy and difficult selection process. I, with your help, need to get inside the head of these tunes. I need to eat, sleep, drink each song on each of these four albums until I have what is the ultimate consensus as to the best songs, and the best order. Now I have my picks already lined up, but based on your interpretations of them, my choices will completely change. Regardless of the fact that this tape will be for two guys in Chicago and one in Denver, this compilation will be one big creative process involving the entire joniworld. Well, you have either stopped reading, booted me from your list, or maybe just maybe you are replying to me with your songs and what they mean. C'mon, this is the chance you have been waiting for. This cutting edge musical society needs you. You are contracted for pay in love dollars (sorry, I'm getting a little out of hand). Anyways, upon completion, I will send a copy with cover art, pr, etc. to Wally (just because he is the weblord of this here jm.com, and is a cool guy). (Snatched from the Post's web page) - --------------- Riled Woman Joni Mitchell, Good and Mad on 'Taming the Tiger' By Mike Joyce Special to The Washington Post Wednesday, September 30, 1998; Page D05 While female singer-songwriters half her age and with half her talent continue to be touted as "the new Joni Mitchell," the old Joni Mitchell, now 54, continues to make extraordinary pop music, creating albums full of poetry, passion and opinion. Indeed, if her new release, "Taming the Tiger" (Reprise), illustrates one thing, it's that Mitchell's great craft and defiant spirit remain undiminished by decades of recording and acclaim. Rather than mellowing over the years, she seems more determined than ever to express herself candidly in a pop world she believes is almost entirely driven by hype and profits. She vents her contempt for the record industry's starmaker machinery on the album's title track, declaring, "I'm a runaway from the record biz/ from the hoods in the hood and the whiny white boys./ Boring!" Say what you will about "Taming the Tiger," boring it's not. Mitchell explores a wide range of themes on the album, addressing both social and personal issues, and in so doing reveals anew her special gift for composing artful, thought-provoking ballads laced with airy jazz harmonies. Two of the most memorable songs have a revealing autobiographical slant. "Harlem in Havana" concerns a young white girl who becomes entranced by the sound of black music, a tale inspired by Mitchell's childhood encounter with a traveling burlesque show. "Auntie Ruthie would have cried/ if she knew/ we were on the inside," she sings. Another chapter of her life apparently inspired "Face Lift," which involves a mother and daughter trying to square their irreconcilable views of sexuality. Other songs take a metaphoric shape, a literary device Mitchell mastered a long time ago. And yet for all her deft wordplay, there are times when she doesn't ask the listener to read between the lines. Anger and anguish are clearly evident in her searing verse and in the sound of her voice, which has grown darker and more expressive. On "No Apologies," she does nothing to conceal the outrage she felt upon hearing how the military dealt with a recent incident of rape involving American servicemen in Okinawa: "The general offered no apologies/ He said, 'The soldiers erred in judgment/ They should have hired a hooker!'/ No apologies/ To the outraged Japanese/ No 'Sorry little girl'/ The pigs just took her." Mitchell often relies on unusual guitar and keyboard harmonies to create an atmospheric glow. Several of the sparse arrangements are further enhanced by the soulful contributions of her longtime collaborator, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, and the nimble jazz drummer Brian Blade. The most surprising performance, though, finds Mitchell reprising the Sons of the Pioneers' sentimental hit "My Best to You," with the help of pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz. The old cowboy song evokes a world brimming with good cheer, an old-fashioned notion that helps bring this frequently disquieting album to a comforting close.
