If the manifesto theory is correct and Joni is really taking the piss out of the music biz, then I love her even more. I agree that Lead Balloon is a fine rock song and proves that Joni understands the dynamics of the genre very well. The line "sic her rover that went over" is loaded with attitude. But I still think the production sounds like a limp 80's stadium rock throwback with Wayne Shorter breaking through like interference from a neighbouring jazz station and I can't listen to it. So I guess the joke is on me. It's a pity then that she didn't bring in an outside producer to give the track either a daytime radio sheen or a proper dirty alternative sound. Either of those options would be a better and much more subversive joke. TTT is my album of the year, why do people want her to write another Hejira again, man. And to further embroil myself in controversy I wish to state that Lucinda's "Car wheels" is not as good as her white album or "sweet old world". David Sanborn talked with her briefly regarding her near-retirement from the music industry, her paintings (they showed several from TTT), and she performed (previously recorded) a version of Crazy Cries with Dave on saxophone and Brian on drums. Very nicely done...she was relaxed and of good voice. Nothing new revealed, except that Joni wants to paint a family portrait of her and Kilauren and Marlin (wonder if she will have "Momma-let-go-now" Myrtle included?), but has not had time, since she says she is in "promo mode" these days. David did err when he asked her about giving up her daughter at age "16", and she corrected him. Also she commented that there are now about 3 million birth mothers and adoptees searching for one another, and said there is now no longer societal shame imposed for her decision she made 33 years ago. I am so happy to see all this publicity and promotion of TTT and have my selfish desire fulfilled to see more of Joni in public. She was a little "wind-blown" appearing without the aid of a stylist, and had very little make-up on. The lighting was not that flattering, but she still looked fab for a granny. I like it much better than at first and now I think it stands, not with Hejira or Blue, but among her other best work. It's certainly one of the best albums of the year. I love all the songs and they're invading my brain. Lead Balloon is a great rocker and should be played on Album Rock Radio. Which brings me to my only criticism of TTT now that I've had time to really listen. The sound Wayne Shorter makes on some tracks (Lead Balloon, Crazy Cries, Facelift) is too high and not always right for the song. I think LB would be a radio hit if not for the horns and having heard the other two songs without the horns, I'd say they were much more commercial before. In fact, Crazy Cries would definitely get radio airplay, but the horns make it sound too jazzy for pop radio. These are only quibbles for me, but it's a shame Joni probably won't get her radio due. Also, since she worked on TTT for 4 years, I think it could be longer than 44 minutes. But that's just because I love her music and want more. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Oct 1998 10:43:58 +0000 From: michael paz Subject: Lead Ballooooooooon LED LED!! They are as follows: 1. Problem one: I agree with all of his post. All except one point which I will address later and that is not a problem. I've been listening for a few days. I started late, had to look real hard to find the disc. But I know I find some of it redundant and that is a problem. 2. I agree with Howard's sequence view of the disc. The beginning songs and the ending songs are the best. The middle blurrs together in one big monotonous sound. One we heard on TI. If I graphed it, it would be a bell curve with the beginning and end on the high end and everything else bunched together in the middle. 3. That's the third problem. The VG8. That clanky pipe organ hit with a hammer sound. Anyone can correct me if I am wrong here, but the VG8 is not an instrument. It is a tie in. A synthesizer of sorts. A big foot pedal. It works great for Joni because it allows her to use one guitar and contain all her tunings. But in that it is not an instrument, I posit it does not ADD BREATH (HHHHHAAAAAAAOOOO) to the music. It enhances the sounds. It makes more things possible. But it does not give life. It's not an instrument. I think it is better for Joni than it is for her studio fans. It allows her to tour. Thus it is good for her fans because it allows her to play more. But the quality of her play is not the same as it is without it. Vis a vie Hejira. It works like an analogy, which deteriorates as it progresses. Analogies are never as good as that which they describe. The VG8 is never as good as the tuned guitar which it describes. It allows her to play, and that is its best attribute. This morning on GMA, Joni said clearly " if it were not for Brian Blade and the new guitar, I would not be playing music in the trade. Brian brought her accompanyment and the guitar made it feasable to do her tunings. Here she describes the guitar and the VG8 as one. This is where we get the run on sound. They are not one and using it on every song limits the sound range. When you tour with guitars, you need a bunch of them. I am a terrible amature player and I have four guitars. You can't get around different guitars for different sounds. (***Jimdlers, I am not suggesting she change. Only stating my impression. Please read on before getting mad. I'd rather you read the whole thing before shunning me.) 4. My next major problem with Howard's post is that it came from Howard. See, he's a knight of the siquomb table. Right? We all remember how two weeks ago he defended Joni's reputation against marauding journalists. Remember how he listed the play list for the concert where the writer said she only played one song written before 1990 (i think Chicago?) and there were like 5 songs actually played. Remember? Well, this is the same Howard and that means something. I am also surprised with how few have responded to Howard's post. It was a difficult post, because it was an honest one from someone proven. That is a major problem. 5. I am slightly to the left on the pedestrian nature of the lyrics. I agree they were not as rich as her former works. But they had the Joni edge, and that was fine. I didn't really like the led balloon but I did like her sass in that song. The title track was wonderful. The big boo hoo was fine for me as well. (It was her cat that was lost.) It didn't offend me. Now, I had one disagreement with Howard's post which is not a problem. I actually find My Best To You the best song on the disc. Here's the reason. Joni's changed. She is no longer QUEEN UNDISPUTED OF MIND BEAUTY. Now she is QUEEN UNDISPUTED OF HEART BEAUTY. I think My Best To You shows her wisdom. She's moved from mind to heart. Howard's post on this song was beautiful: The other songs don't acheive this intimacy. My Best to You almost does--but that is not her song. (There is a meloncholic undertone in My Best to You that is almost heartbreaking. AS if she is saying goodbye to an old boyfriend where the love still lingers in both of their hearts but that love is not strong enough to keep them alive together. ) However, I see a happy Joni here. One with peace in her heart. And that makes this one song the best one for me, because some one so beautiful as Joni has found happiness and that offers me hope. My Best To You is a hopeful song sung by someone proven. I read somewhere this was for her fans. It could be for Kilauren. And it has a show tune beat to it. It is a different song. I think it is a prayer more than a song. Maybe a psalm. Perhaps she really is saying good bye to an old boy friend. Her edge. Her angst. He turbulence. Her Hejira. Last thought. Joni said this morning, her painting is more important to her than her music. That is where she spends her time. I think TTT says that. I think the best quality to the whole disc is the cover. That is where the rich detail is we're used to hearing. Only now it is seen, not heard. The cover shows the present Joni best. Even better than the music. Howard you are right. It is not Hejira. My thought, we won't get another Hejira. That is over now. Now, we have to see the artist in a different place. We have to let go of our old expectations and embrace our uncertain hopes, and that is always a difficult thing. But the paintings make that easier. There's still much Joni to come. Much different Joni. Thanks Howard. You're an honest post. pj ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 15:29:14 EDT From: WirlyPearl@aol.com Subject: Tickets to Joni in Sunrise FL I just called the box office and was told tickets go on sale October 3rd at noon. We've been around since JS Bach, the greatest synth player of them all, playing and composing on the state-of-the-art keyboard of his time ... a pipe organ. I also think it's a bit hasty to jump on the VG8, because every track credits Joni with "keyboards" as well as, "guitar orchestra" -- which I think indicates use of the VG8 sound synthesis. Nonetheless, whichever you're talking about, both are viable musical instruments, as much as any Martin Guitar or Selmer Saxaphone, or Steinway grand. And they are as much a part of the sonic landscape of Joni's new album. Without either, TTT wouldn't have happened. PJ continues ... >But the quality of her play is not the same as it is without it. Vis >a vie Hejira. It works like an analogy, which deteriorates as it >progresses. > So what are you saying, because her guitar is plugged into a synth module, Joni's forgotten how to play? That just doesn't make any sense to me. I'll submit rather, that she's learned to use synthesis to stretch and fill out her vision of her songs -- go places with them a guitar alone couldn't take her. If she wanted to make another 'Hejira', she would have. Instead, she made TTT -- how can her choice of electronic instrumentation tarnish that vision? And to PJ's observation ... >The VG8 is never as good as the tuned guitar which it describes. And I'd also venture to say that the tuned guitar is never as good as the VG8 it describes -- you see it works both ways. PJs post continues ... >When you tour with guitars, you need a bunch of them. I am a terrible amature >player and I have four guitars. You can't get around different guitars for >different sounds. > Well you can't get around having different keyboards for different sounds either. I have four myself, and despite the clear, clean digital sounds I get on one ... nothing substitues for the resonance of my old 800-lb Fender Rhodes electric piano. >(***Jimdlers, I am not suggesting she change. Only stating my >impression. Please read on before getting mad. I'd rather you read >the whole thing before shunning me.) PJ -- I'm not shunning you. But frankly, one of the best things for me about TTT is that I finally get to hear Joni Mitchell the synth player .. and for that reason alone, it will always be a treat. The song is like the teeth of an small, pesky insect sunk in the hand rather than the sting of the scorpion, which would have been somewhat lethal, perhaps not only to Mr. G, but to herself. If she had made the song better, it would probably have much more critical acclaim, resulting in more widespread notice and speculation about her dissing of Mr. G. Maybe she did not want to singe Mr. G too badly, afterall. It was still "his town" last I checked. The other thing I like about this song is that she's also putting the joke on herself to a large extent. She's laughing at her own legendary bouts of bad temper and even parodying her own distinctive music style to some extent by inserting the little bits of it throughout the music. It also shows, on a deeper level, a good-natured transcendence of some of her old demons. I like the interviewer's comment that she plays her guitar as if it were a percussion instrument. I hope that her appearance boosts airplay for the new song, although GMA is not exactly the hotbed of American culture (in other words, it probably didn't do to much). I loved her performance though! If she wanted to make another 'Hejira', she would have. Instead, she made TTT -- how can her choice of electronic instrumentation tarnish that vision? 1. Don, I understand your confusion. What I should have said was the SOUND quality of her play is not the same. I don't think she has forgotten how to play at all. I think the variety of sounds she achieved with various instruments is lost by utilizying one synthesized piece of equipment. It has its values....but i'd still like to hear a variety. 2. I hold my ground on Hejira. She can't do another one. Her heart's not there. I'm not saying she's less a musician. I'm saying she's moved to a new place which includes some compromises she did not make before, as well as new things she did not do before either. And to PJ's observation ... >The VG8 is never as good as the tuned guitar which it describes. And I'd also venture to say that the tuned guitar is never as good as the VG8 it describes -- you see it works both ways. No way jose. Joni could not go on stage with only a VG8 and a microphone. She could go out with only a guitar and a microphone. Also, I would say you are a keyboard player, not a synthesizer player. You sometimes use the synthesized medium in which to play your instrument...the keyboard. - -----but if you used it all the time, .......i'd probably get tired of it. But thank you very much for not shunning me. That's the most brutal of punishments. When Wally talks...people listen. - -Julius Source: Music News Of The World http://www.addict.com/MNOTW/lofi/ - ----BEGIN ARTICLE--- Joni Mitchell To Open Six Dates On Bob Dylan's Tour Folk-rock pioneer recently played Bethel, N.Y., concert commemorating Woodstock festival. Contributing Editor Frank Tortorici reports: Veteran singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell will open six shows for folk-rock legend Bob Dylan in October and November, including a stop at historic Madison Square Garden in New York, according to Mitchell's management firm. "It's a good package and she enjoys touring with [Dylan]," said a source at Feldman & Associates who preferred not to be named. Mitchell, who will release her latest album, Taming The Tiger, on Tuesday, joined Van Morrison as one of the opening acts for the West Coast leg of Dylan's tour earlier this year. In addition, she recently played the "A Day in the Garden" commemorative festival on Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel, N.Y., the site of the historic 1969 Woodstock concert. Wally Breese, webmaster of the jonimitchell.com website that last year helped Mitchell reunite with a daughter she gave up for adoption, said of the tour pairing: "I think Joni is doing these shows with Dylan as opposed to a tour on her own because he already has the whole thing set up and all she really has to do is show up. It's much easier than planning and executing a tour of one's own. I know that Joni likes Dylan and considers him to be one of her songwriting peers." Breese said that Dylan -- who will release a two-CD set, Live 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert, later this year -- was kind to Mitchell at their joint Vancouver, British Columbia, show in May. "The crowd was not as attentive as Joni would've liked and she was a bit unsure about continuing the tour as she came offstage," Breese said. "Bob was right there, though, and was so enthusiastic about her performance, telling her, 'Oh, man! Those chords! I'm going to sound like a hillbilly now when I go out onstage,' that she felt much better. Very kind, indeed!" The tour dates on which Mitchell will open for Dylan may also include a seventh show, which either will be scheduled Oct. 30 in Ottawa or Oct. 31 in Amherst, Mass. Several of the reviews posted here have touched on the VG8 sounding the same, with some suggesting a monotonous quality. Yet I can't remember any reviews mentioning this about her acoustic guitar(s). Don't they also possess much the "same" sound each and every time she plays them? With the exception of actually changing from say a Gibson to a Martin or whatever she's playing, an acoustic guitar sounds like an acoustic guitar. Her VG8 sounds like her VG8. Is it possible that we're just not used to hearing this new setup? I'm wondering if the criticism about her songs sounding the same is because the new sonics are foreign. Joni is seemingly wedded to the VG8. Like it or not, she doesn't show much interest in returning to songs and sounds from her past. While I definitely love the sound of an acoustic guitar, I think this is once again an example of Joni being a pioneer. If she had used only an acoustic throughout TTT, would people still think that the songs sound the same? If you would grace me with a response to (mgoerz@bastyr.edu) I would be truly greatful. Thanks in advance for any responses! Follow me here...A couple of my friends and I are drawn together by our love of music. We feel that if one likes an artist, all in the group should be exposed. Therefore, we created our own music trading circle known as the "Rack Oglers Football League" (based on a friend mocking me when I asked what "ROFL" meant). So anyways, my faux-record company, M-Tel (consisting of me, my cats, and Joni loving wife), which in the past did "Joni Mitchell: A Tentative Experience" featuring more of her older hits for the group, is thinking that the next project MUST be another Joni compilation. I want to feature songs from the abovementioned albums, because I like the tone and feel they have. When I made the original tape (titled "Tentative" because friends were at the time were not familiar nor seemed excited about the release), I was only breaking into Joni's work. Since then, I have found a love for this next wave of her work (or so I like to call it that). Now to make this fun for me because I live in a fantasy world (Walter Mitty), I like to accompany the tape with an official press release, promotional item, and cover art/liner notes. This is my creative outlet. The process I take is highly important. So I figured, what better way to enhance the process than by utilizing the input of the masses that know Joni's work best. So I am imagining a lengthy and difficult selection process. I, with your help, need to get inside the head of these tunes. I need to eat, sleep, drink each song on each of these four albums until I have what is the ultimate consensus as to the best songs, and the best order. Now I have my picks already lined up, but based on your interpretations of them, my choices will completely change. Regardless of the fact that this tape will be for two guys in Chicago and one in Denver, this compilation will be one big creative process involving the entire joniworld. Well, you have either stopped reading, booted me from your list, or maybe just maybe you are replying to me with your songs and what they mean. C'mon, this is the chance you have been waiting for. DJRD 2. STAS (HDCD Version) 3. Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 4. TTT 5. Hejira I think TTT is a beautiful piece of work and it may yet creep up to number 2 after a few more listens. I love everything on it except Lead Balloon (sorry Kakki) and Tiger Bones (does not really add anything to the song). I think it would have been much more interesting if the "hidden track" was a re-recorded version of Both Sides Now or Circle Game. I don't think anything will surpass DJRD anytime soon as my all time fave. I never really listened to STAS much before because I could not stand the belljar sound. The remastered version sounds so much better, on my stereo anyway, that I have been listening to it constantly. It's an amazing piece of work, and she must have written most of the songs while she was still 18 or 19? I can't seem to get Cactus Tree out of my head.
