I agree with some of the things she says, but she's so hyper-critical...and sometimes hypocritical. I rarely ever listen to those I can't stand personally though, like the much-discussed Sarah McLachlan and her ridiculous "Lilith Fair"...I share Tori Amos's view on the whole thing and won't buy music produced by it... What is with Joni and Sheryl Crow? Just a few years ago she was bashing Crow...and back then, I agreed. I get the feeling someone high up 'leaned' on her to change her decision, but I don't know. On a lighter note, I love TTT, it's one of Joni's best...especially 'Harlem in Havana' and 'Man from Mars,' although some of the overt techno overtones were rather unwelcome IMNSHO. I still liked TI much better, and 'Hejira' better than both of them...but DJRD is still my fav.:) To anyone who hasn't noticed, there's an interesting page on Influences on mtv.com with Joni mentioned (she has her own mini-page!) and includes some RealVideo clips of her talking about her own influences, such as Edith Piaf and jazz. For me, it's the weakest song on TTT. Has a great first verse, then wanders off.." Unfortunately (because I'd love to give all new Joni material 5 stars!), I agree with Steve completely. To me, this song is simultaneously one of the most intriguing and disappointing on the entire album. The first verse is so strong lyrically that it fairly demands total attention to what one expects will follow. And Joni's voice is truly a marvel here: deep, experienced, even grandmotherly, but somehow beyond worldliness, or judgment of the atrocity she describes. Joni leaves it to the listener to contrast the purity of her voice with the rape itself and the general's statement, and then to draw his or her own conclusions. What follows, though, seems to be a rambling jeremiad against male violence that is unexpected for several reasons. First, does Joni, who has publicly rejected the label "feminist" as "divisive," truly believe that males have cornered the market on the darkest of human impulses, or on acting on them? Although I realize that the lyrics make clear that the main character in "The Wolf That Lives in Lindsey" was a man, I always appreciated that the his name could apply to either gender. Second, after that beautifully crisp, unforgettable first verse, the lyrics veer off into private mythology. Who are Juan and Freddie? Why is the former a "petty little tyrant"? How, precisely, are loan sharks "laying America to waste"? And what is the connection of any of this to the very specific acts of verbal and physical violence described in verse 1? To me, the mark of a great song, at least in part, is that someone else could sing it and succeed at making it their own. But I don't see anyone but Joni singing "NA" after the first verse. No one else would know clearly enough what it meant to make the interpretation meaningful. Finally, in a new experience regarding a JM song, I find myself chasing the ghost of the song that nearly was, almost to the point of trying to write it myself. What was the soldiers' demeanor at their trial, and what did they say, if anything? What did the sky look like? What did the press write? What statement did that little girl's mother make when it was all over? And the general--what office is he working in, proclaiming what new pronouncements with impunity? In the alternative, if Joni wanted to decry male violence in the rest of the song, could she have done so in a way that knit all the verses together? In the final analysis, though, it's a mark of Joni's greatness that, even when she falls short--as I believe she does here--she does so because she herself has set the bar so very high. In "No Apologies," her standard and the failure to achieve it coexist in the same song. Mojo magazine (October 98) challenged 175 singers to name their top ten vocal heroes. Van made it in at number 15, and here is the commentary: "So poetic, and it always comes from the heart" Maggie Bell He grunts, he growls, he snorts, he mutters - and it still sounds like a sacrament. Not everyone is enchanted by the voice of Van Morrison, but to those who are, there is no other voice that seems so spiritual. The best description is probably his own: The Inarticulate Speech of the Heart. Uniquely for a white singer of his generation, Van was already steeped in blues before he heard Elvis Presley. Unlike Lennon and the rest, he was not smitten by the arrival of rock, and never fixated upon the flash or the glamour. "Pop has just never been my music" he says. "Because I've always heard the real stuff, y'know? I grew up in a household where I heard all the real music, so when I heard pop I didn't have to rush out. "I loved Little Richard and Fats Domino, but I had the background of hearing this other music since I was three. So it wasn't such a big injection, like with rebellious teenagers when they heard rock'n'roll. I'd already heard similar music that was called rhythm'n'blues, which was where rock'n'roll came from. So it wasn't any big diversion" As a consequence, he never developed along the same lines as other rock singers. From the yappy snarl of his first recordings with Them, to the rumbling meditations of his later work, Morrison grew ever less interested in making a show. He doesn't project, or express, for the benefit of his audience: we are merely allowed to eavesdrop on some obsessive private dialogue. On the pivotal Astral Weeks LP we can here his voice mid-way between the edginess of his youth and the deeper, more measured resonance of his maturity. But he's already begun to sing in tongues: "And I shall drive my chariot down your streets and cry/Hey! It's me, I'm dynamite and I don't know why" (Sweet Thing). He's the least precise of vocalists, and maybe the most eccentric, but Van can genuinely seem in a trance when he performs - like he's forgotten who, what or where he is. "When he was on-stage, he would look like a space cadet" recalled one of his musicians. "But then he'd open his mouth, and you would realise that he had channelled everything into the sound of his voice. The rest of it was just a shell that was there for the purpose of producing this voice" Sublime moment: Van locates the Eternal Now, in Belfast circa 1955, at 7.44 of Take Me Back (Hymns to the Silence) Recommended: Astral Weeks Credited to Paul Du Noyer Anyone know which of "his musicians" might be responsible for the space cadet quote?? Not great. Just as DJRD has a song that begins exactly like Coyote, TTT has a The Crazy Cries of Love that begins exactly like Turbulent Indigo. (A guitar going Da-rum, da-rum, da-rum) It sounds as if she had one guitar on the entire album--and almost every song begins with her strumming that guitar. The lyrics, when I read them in the car as soon as I got out of the store, were surprisingly dull. The poetry, the wordplay, the freshness is just not there. Any intelligent songwriter could have written these--and I know the stories behind the songs are uniquely Joni (Facelift) but the writing is not especially profound. Not for a writer of her stature. (Hejira. Enough said.) But, oh, the beauty and the surprises. Harlem in Havana is great. I wanted that much innovation and fun in all the songs. The layers of sound, the nuances in her voice. Oy. Man in the Moon is wonderful--the loss imbued in the music, in her voice. And then it all falls apart for me. Except for one more song--and this is a song that I have heard on various tapes and heard her sing live and it never really did anything for me. (It reminds me of my experience with Amelia which never did much for me on vinyl/CD and then I heard her sing it at Pauley Pavilion. It soared--just like those six jet planes.) The song is Facelift which I thought was just ok and then I heard it on the CD. Mama, indeed! The processing on her voice, and the mix of her voice with the music, make it sound as if she is talking to one person, almost as if she is talking on the phone and telling you, the listener, her friend, this story. Her voice is very intimate, her delivery is very intimate--she sounds very close, as if whispering so her mother doesn't hear. As if she is confiding in you, as if she sadly recounting this story to you--and this is what JM has always done superbly--told the story of her life in such a way that it echoes your life and she tells you as if you are a friend. The other songs don't acheive this intimacy. My Best to You almost does--but that is not her song. (There is a meloncholic undertone in My Best to You that is almost heartbreaking. AS if she is saying goodbye to an old boyfriend where the love still lingers in both of their hearts but that love is not strong enough to keep them alive together. ) Lead Balloon, for me, is just that. It reminds me of my reaction to Dancin' Clown--this ain't it--and how I skip over it when listening to Chalkmark. As I said, it usually takes me fifteen times to truly love a Joni album and I will listen to it five thousand fifteen times, I am sure. But it is not Hejira, it is not even Turbulent Indigo. But it is Joni and I am blessed to have been moved--so far--by even a few songs. And now, I await the rebukes. Voting will end this Saturday at midnight,EST. Send your vote to: vote@jmdl.com If you missed Paul's post, here it is... 1. A donation in Joni's name to the SPCA and enclose the receipt in a card. 2. A donation in Joni's name to Save the Animals and enclose the receipt in a card. 3. A collage of photos of us, taken at JMDL gatherings in Julie's and Ashara's parties as well as the Joni concerts, plus any photos of individual members that they want to submit. The collage would symbolically show Joni how her music and spirit has brought together a wide variety of people who otherwise might never have met and become friends. The message: "Thank you, Joni, for bringing us together and keeping us together. Happy birthday from the Joni Mitchell Discussion List." 4. Adopt a child through a good organization that isn't a rip-off and not affiliated with a religion. Perhaps a kid from Ethiopia to stick with a Joni theme. Whoever wants can send in money and have their names on a card we send to Joni and the kid we sponsor. This could be an annual event, so we don't have to decide what to get her for the next 20 years. We can send her a card with updates on the kid each year on her birthday 5. A bottle of Tequila and a carton of Lucky Strikes (or American Spirits). 6. A collection of postcards from where we live with a short birthday greeting. 7. A map of the world with dots or some other indicator showing where we all live. Choose a place (e.g in the Atlantic somewhere) where there is space, and have a logo with "The Joni Mitchell Discussion List" in fairly big letters. Draw lines from this logo to each of the name markers on the map. 8. Same as last year except without all the photos. The cover would be a copy of the banner used by the JMDL used at The Garden concert. 9. The JMDL cookbook -- a collection of recipes with short bios on the contributors. 10. Have all of the JMDL'ers e-mail addresses printed on a large cat pillow, you know one of those soft pillows that dogs and cats sleep on. 11. An expenses-paid trip to Jonifest '99 in Colorado. 12. A beautiful bouquet of flowers with a simple note. 13. A small box of token gifts from JMDL members, whether it be a card, poem, or whatever, something that wouldn't take up a very big box. 14. Individual birthday cards sent in by members, passed along to Wally, who would deliver them in a big sack. 15. The same sack of individual birthday cards, along with a basket of goodies (like coffee from Honduras) representing where we are from in the world. 16. A simple card, no larger than the "average" Hallmark-type card, custom made by someone with a graphics program on their PC. The front could be the illustration from Les' website of Joni with a cup of coffee, framed by a "squiggly" line to make it look like a postage stamp. Heading on the cover: "We've got stamps of many countries and we wish you a happy birthday!" Then at the bottom of the front cover: "Thank you for sharing so much joy and giving us so much inspiration ... from the Joni Mitchell Discussion List." On the inside, instead of signing names, we'd list by city, state and country where all participating JMDL members reside. 17. A JMDL community birthday card using a theme of pinball and billiards 18. A toy pinball machine 19. A beautiful sketch book, maybe with handmade paper 20. A bottle of her favorite wine 99. And last as well as least, a smelly turd wrapped in a special box, with a world map on it, showing where each of us JMDLrs lives. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Oct 1998 17:22:12 PDT From: "Jos B" Subject: Man from Mars and Grace of my Heart. Hi all! I didn't realize that Man from Mars was released with Joni singing it on a very few versions of the Grace of my Heart soundtrack, until I read some info on the site. I got the soundtrack when it came out, and when it came to MFM I was surprised to hear Joni's voice, as the the album cover suggested someone else singing it. Unfortunately I sold the album a little later (I wanted something else badly, and Joni's was the only good song on it, so) figuring I could always buy it again later. Anyway I was mucking about with MP3 computer sound files at the time, and I found it again on my hard drive the other day!! Joy!! I must have 'taped' it while I was experimenting. I have only heard the RealAudio demo on Wally's site of the TTT version of MFM (being in NZ, albums take more time to get released here - If ever....lol) but I my say the GOMH version is much better!!! It has Joni (or someone) playing piano in much the same style as 'blue' and the emotional impact is doubled (if you can believe that!) Hope you all have heard it/get a chance to hear it. Personally I'm wondering if it wasn't a big mistake to ask Joni to play this event in the first place. She's stated over & over that she is *not* a folk singer and certainly her current work bears that out. But then of course she could have refused the gig. JUST SAY NO, JONI. I'm also wondering if the majority of the people who could afford the pricey tickets for this gala event were a bit too upper-crust for our Joan's taste. Might explain the set list and the reference to 'societal ills'. I know, I know, Joni is no pauper. But she's never seemed like somebody who would let money go to her head. (Although in comparison, Tina, personifies sexual energy by far, she seems far older than any of these women. Why? Can anyone help me here?) When I think of Leslie Uggams, I'm reminded of Mitch Miller of "Sing Along With Mitch" fame. My mom and I used to sing along with Mitch's records, which had perforated song sheets for parties, in the very early 1960s. I remember a rumor (fact? anyone know?) that Leslie, a black woman, was romantically involved with Mitch, an older white man. As my family is rather bigoted, my mom was appalled!
