The average sales figure for a No.1 single this year is 136,000, and a first-week total 79,000 for a No.3 hit is above average (indeed, in many quieter weeks, it would be enough to top the charts). It was outsold by The Beautiful South's Perfect 10 (89,000) and B*Witched (an Irish all-girl Spice-type confection), whose Rollercoaster sold 140,000 copies..... Selling 37,000 copies of an album in a week would also often be enough to make No.1, but it all depends on timing. First-week sales for No.1 albums can vary wildly (700,000 for the last Oasis album, 24,000 for Hanson last year). The Manic Street Preachers latest release (which had sold 135,000 copies the previous week), still hung on to the No.1 position, despite its second-week sales dropping to 60,000. Sheryl's last album eventually went double-platinum here (it took over a year to do so), and her albums are generally steady-but-unspectacular sellers (two platinum albums, but her highest ever weekly position is No.5). Phew! A lot of facts and figures to digest there :-) So, how will Joni fare in the UK? Hard to say, really. Taking into account the time of year, and the stiff competition for chart places at the moment, a Top 30 entry would be surprising. CMIARS and NRH both cracked the top 30, but were released in the spring (a quieter time for releases in the UK). I predict a No.37 entry position, but would of course be delighted if it were higher. Lauryn Hill's album looks likely to go in at No.1. Jason. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Sep 1998 13:35:13 +-100 From: Hassan Zubairi Subject: Another Review This review appears in Q magazine. I hope nobody has sent it. A large and beautiful portrait of Joni Mitchell, taken from the television, judging by the slightly airbrushed fuzzy quality, with a small caption saying,"Joni Mitchell: one of her songs is called Facelift." Q always being slightly irreverent to what they review to keep them in with the youngies. The large title is called: STILL HARD. She's not getting any younger. She's not getting any dafter either. And the rest of the review goes something like this: JONI MITCHELL, LET'S see: born 1943, christened Roberta Joan Anderson, equine grande dame of American song, always enjoyed a glowing establishment consensus, and so forth. Well, actually not so. In 1975, Rolling Stone, in a fit of blather that makes Richard Littlejohn seem shrewd, denounced The Hissing of Summer Lawns, now routinely rated a classic, as worst record of the year. In a music scene dominated by Lester Bangs, Lou Reed's Rock'n'Roll Animal and The Tubes, only the bravest gave their vote to the angular bohemian ni-tec jazz balladry that's dominated her oeure ever since. The wing-collared shirts were out in force though in 1994 to shower Grammies on her last album, Turbulent Indigo. Taming Th Tiger finds her in better form. Jazz still exerts a shaping influence but there are other less easily categorised forces at work. Witness the introduction to Harlem In Havana where a reassuringly elegant tune emerges from dislocated noises. Lyrically, she's as skilled as ever, although even Mitchell can make too many allusions to cafes, saxophones and raincoats. Lead Balloon's choicest couplet, 'An angry man is just an angry man, but an angry woman is a bitch' is just the rueful side of hectoring. Moans about the music biz from insiders are rarely essential, but the title track is better than similar efforts as it correctly identifies the 'whining white kids' of modern American music. Facelift, smouldering with righteous anger and sadness, finds a daughter telling a parent that 'happiness is the best facelift'. Top-flight chums abound - Wayne Shorter, ex-boyfriend Larry Klein etc - but the sound has a pleasing unity, its most notable feature being attractive guitar washes a la Daniel Lanois and Vini Reilly framed in Mitchell's unfathomable tunings as showcased in the pointlessly hidden instrumental Tiger Bones. She's never sung better either, the clear and precise enunciations now gone nicely husky, so she sounds like Elvis Costello's worldly older sister. Mitchell continues to grow old without growing soft. This is tasteful and distinctive stuff but clearly a bespoke product for grown-ups. A 15 year-old is as likely to possess it as they are a camel-hair overcoat. Marketing men have to worry about that stuff. Joni Mitchell doesn't. FOUR STARS. Standout tracks: Love Puts On A New Face, Facelift, Man From Mars. Like This? Try these: Joan Baez: Diamonds & Rust; Rickie Lee Jones: Pirates; Lucinda Williams: Car Wheels On A Dirt Road By Stuart Maconie. me now: an excellent review by all means. Intersting to note that most of the reviews that I've read, either by standing at the magazine section of Tower Records or by people's postings mention Lead Balloon lyrics at some point. This review is glowing and takes up 4/5 of the page with Joni's face dominating, beautiful, glowing, calm and grand. I do like the new haircut Joni. I'm glad the fringe has gone. I can see your face now. Scouring the rest of the mag, Q gives Lauryn Hill and PJ Harvey only 4 stars, Dar Williams 3. Nobody got 5. So JM in the best of this months outpourings according to Q. Anyway. This next album that she is talking about is the album that should have Reprises resources behind it not TTT. I think putting all the energy they are behind TTT is a big mistake. The general public will not like TTT and when this album doesn't do well even with all the publicity and phony reviews (4 stars out of 5, give me a break) they will use that as an excuse not to spend money on her next project which to me sounds like it may be a real winner. Most of the people who have heard her tracks on K. Eastwood's and Herbie Handcocks albums have been very impressed and this is where Joni ,IMHO , should direct her talents. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Sep 1998 09:20:10 -0400 From: Jerry Notaro Subject: Re: Dates Yippee! Let's face it. Joni no matter what the chart say is doing just fine. She's getting her music out there. Whether "She's number one" or at the bottom of the ladder. She's making her art, her way. She chose to make art over making more moolah. I also see at least two other things in the mix as to why Joni won't place in the money. She's older and she's a woman. Our society as AGE-ophobic as it is, does not make a place for older women. They are left to get things on their own. All the "arty" young ladies are doing well. This is their spring and their summer. We like them, they're pretty. They make interesting music. But once that bloom falls from the flower, which occurs at age 29, according to Ms. Ford of the Ford Modeling Agency, women become less interesting. I'm not making it up. How many forty plus women make it to the silver screen as real big stars? The men keep on making flicks with younger chicks for a long long time. The women have a hard time finding even "bit" roles. The same thing happens in the music industry. Mick, Paul, Eric they're still rock gods. But what about the old Madonna--Joan Baez? She could barely draw an audience when I saw her in '83. Even Joni's got to attach herself to Uncle Bob to get into the garden. Just a thought and expecting to draw some controversy. - -Chili PS. BTW when I did see Joan Baez, I jumped on stage and gave her a kiss. Good post Chil. I can't help but agree. I added my observations about chart possibilities since there was concern posted about "how to get her in the top whatever." Something that I don't think it truly necessary, especially in lines of merits of poetry outweighing the value of petunias. From the time that I stumbled upon Joni, I've always wondered why she is acclaimed, but not a best seller. Is it the musical equivalent of works by Thomas Pynchon versus Danielle Steele? I don't know if I agree to the age thing about her music, though. The movie stuff makes absolute sense, but since music is not as visually oriented as a movie, I don't see looks and crow's feet coming into play as much. The gender, though, the gender! Could she have been asked to the "Garden" w/out Dylan's coattails? Could she have attracted such a crowd on the West Coast tour w/out Van and Bob? I think that the general public always perceives that a woman's music is either going to be incredibly introspective in a "honey, I feel....." kinda of way or it is going to be male bashing or it is going to be angry. And an angry woman is a bitch. Sometimes, because of the gender thing, the public misses the universal art and focuses on the estrogen. Limiting, but safe. Which is not atypical in today's market. Even though music isn't explicitly visual, much of the iconography that sells it is. Even more importantly, I think most people have been lulled into wanting to buy music by people they can "relate" to (I know it's a nebulous term, but work with me). Since the industry has gotten into the pattern of younger people buying most music, most music will be sold by younger artists. There are exceptions, no doubt, like Bonnie Raitt and Eric Clapton. But even these exceptions don't match the stratospheric numbers of a Mariah Carey. I don't think it's necessarily an issue of quality being unable to sell. While there is a significant mallification of the US music charts (see Carey, Mariah above), a number of critically acclaimed records have done very well commercially this year. Chief among them is Lauryn Hill--for the charts that will be published tomorrow she regains the number one spot, selling north of 167,000 copies in the chart week. That makes four weeks at number one. In the five weeks since it was released, _Miseducation_ has already achieved double platinum status--that's 2 million copies shipped in the US alone. Lauryn's not alone either. Other critical faves doing well commercially include the Beastie Boys, Madonna, Korn and Garbage. So I don't think it's a quality issue; it's an image issue. The industry loves slots and Joni doesn't fit any of the slots currently in existence. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when a song like "Crazy Cries," that sonically would fit in just fine at AC radio, isn't even considered by programmers because Joni is "passe." The only way for Joni to sell this record is for her to personally ask as many people as she can, by touring. And that's what she's doing, thank Goddess. Due to the tour and increased profile, I have no doubt that in the long run TTT's sales numbers will outpace TI and NRH's, and could potentially even go gold if the slow, steady promotion keeps up. Madonna's new album, which I like very much, is doing well because she had the good sense to use Bill Orbit, probably the "hottest" electronica producer in the biz these days (he's one of the ones who brought us Bjork). Well, of course it's true that she collaborated with William Orbit, but he's not the hottest producer in the elec genre. Or at least he wasn't before this record. Roni Size is really the current darling; Goldie, Orbital, Tricky, and the Chemical Brothers are all much hipper than Wm. Orbit. One of the reasons that the collaboration worked so well is that Wm. Orbit's sound is the most accessible and "softest" of the elec producers. Also, Bjork has never been produced by William Orbit, though he may have remixed her. Her primary producing collaborators are Nellee Hooper (Soul II Soul, Massive Attack, also worked on Maddie's _Bedtime Stories_) Howie B. (SIIS and MA) and Marius DeVries and Tricky. To actually make this relevant, it's worth pointing out that even though ROL was touted as an electronica release and produced by William Orbit, Madonna has not been able to get one spin on alternative radio. Why? Because she's Madonna; doesn't fit their image. For the same reasons, "Lead Balloon" will never see the light of day on commercial alternative radio. <<>> Well, I'd say Madonna w/ William Orbit, but it's 6 versus 1/2 dozen. Her MTV/VH1 exposure and the good critical notices are primarily fueling her sales, not airplay. Witness the increases she saw after the MTV awards, for example. She eventually landed a string of jobs singing at small folk clubs, such as the Riverboat, in Toronto's bohemian Yorkville district. Another regular on the local folk circuit was Chuck Mitchell, a singer and cabaret performer from Detroit. The two young singers were married in June, 1965, just thirty-six hours after they met, according to one report." Read the bio at: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/cb7610.htm 1979: This month's Chatelaine magazine features an article entitled "Joan, Joni, and Neil: '60s Stars in the '70s" in which they say "Joni Mitchell is a different matter altogether. While Baez has always been comfortable working to crowds, Mitchell has preferred to work in seclusion; if Baez is a muralist, Mitchell is a miniaturist, working with delicate shadings of colors, using only the most supple brush strokes. Mitchell's tribute to - and collaboration with - the late, great jazz bassist, Charles Mingus, represents the culmination of her career so far. And yet, it is her most delicate work." Read the article at: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/7910chat.htm Also, this month's Stereo Review puts their spin on the new Mingus release, saying "It seems to me that her experimentation these last few years has been good for her as a vocalist but has narrowed her scope as a writer. Her lyrics had much more insight in the "For the Roses" mode. The ballad tradition as modified by her (and Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot and Jackson Browne and precious few others, actually) is a better format for her Joyce Carol Oates/Woody Allen/soap-opera commentary on *relationships* than one can readily wring from the conventions of jazz, which puts several things above lyrics." It was held at the James Corcoran Gallery in Los Angeles billed as: "Joni Mitchell, New Paintings New Songs", featuring a gallery full of large collage paintings done in her new abstract expressionism style. The new album played on a continuous loop throughout the gallery all evening long. Joni spoke that evening to Alan Jackson, a writer for Britain's New Musical Express, about the new album and it's angry tone. She said: "I'm a witness to my times. We're all only a hairline and a few laws from incredible censorship. They're already trying to censor rock'n'roll. One of the reasons this album is so outspoken in the context of my work is that I think it's a case of use it or lose it." This event got huge coverage from MTV, ET, Japanese TV, and many newspapers because it had a celebrity attendance that ensured notice. From Jack Nicholson to James Taylor to Christopher Cross to Sheena Easton, the list went on and on. The party was considered a huge success. Jack Nicholson told a writer that night: "It's very easy to repeat past successes. Joni hasn't done it, and that takes a lot of strength.
