It's hard to figure out what Cobain, Bono, Tim Yorke etc are doing on the list while leaving out Laura Nyro, Sandy Denny, June Tabor, Terry Callier, Bobby Womack, Curtis Mayfield. I could go on. To me the sublime Joni moment is the way she sings the word "gone" at 1.29 in "How Do You Stop". I detect a lot of regret in that one word. She starts the word with a deep intake of breath and then breathes it out like a sigh. The only other singer who can speak volumes in one word like this is Aretha Franklin. There is a great Johnny Adams record from a few years ago called The Real Me where he sang the songs of Doc Pomus, produced by Dr John. Worth checking out if you haven't already. Greetings from the Midwest! Here is what I've got arranged for the Indianapolis show on Monday, October 26th. Hotel: Embassy Suites (5 minutes from the Arena!) 110 West Washington Indianapolis, IN 46204 US Eight (8) rooms reserved for Monday, October 26. They are available to you on a "first come" basis. (fair enough?) Each 2 room suite has two (2) double beds in the bedroom - -and- a queen-size fold-out couch in the separate living room. There's a coffee maker, refrigerator, microwave and wet bar in each suite. Also two televisions, one in each room. * Cooked-to-order Breakfast is included in this rate. * Free Drinks at the bar from 5:30-7:30 are also included! * Cost of each room: $166.50 (based on 2 persons per room) Note: These room reservations *must* be done through me since it's a discounted "group" reservation. After-the-concert Party: I found two places that are open until 3:00am. Both serve food late. They are… The Slippery Noodle Inn -and- Ike and Jonesy's. The "Noodle" is a well-known blues bar. They serve dinners, sandwiches and salads until 11pm, appitizers/munchies until close. At this point I don't know who, if anybody, will be appearing there when we're there…. more info as we get closer to the 26th…. Ike and Jonesy's will have a DJ on the 26th. (Maybe we can bring some cd's!) The food here is mostly sandwiches and appetizers. I'm thinking that we can decided which place to go to, once we know who is gonna be partying together at the Indy show! Or… we can go to both places! Transportation: I've made tentative arrangements for a "party van" for the entire evening (seating max is 23 persons). They will pick us up at the hotel at 7:30 pm, (after the *free drinks* and munchies!) and then drive us to the concert. The driver will wait for us outside during the show and afterwards, drive us to one or both nightspots, waiting outside while we party. At the end of the evening they will drive us back to the hotel. We are allowed to bring alcohol into the "party van" and we are allowed to consume it enroute! Cost of the "Party Van" is $300 (7pm - 2am) If we stay out later than 2am… price will increase. From the Airport: It's a short ride, approximately 15 minutes, from the airport to the hotel/arena/nightspots area. It shouldn't cost too much to take a taxi! If it can be worked out, I'll be happy to pick-up as many people as I can at the airport. Book your flight now! 14 day-in-advance fares are cheap now! Travelocity is what I use for air travel. They're at: http://www.travelocity.com/ So…. we've got the rooms reserved.. (and we could fit a lot of people into these suites!). The after-concert thing is pretty together… and we don't even have to drive! If this works… please let me know… or, I can make other arrangements if that is the wishes of the Indy group. Times The Pop music critics have got their game on play. Here's an early valentine from one of Joni's homies in L.A. Roar Tiger, roar! Er, make that, "Nice, kitty kitty." ;-) - -Julius _______________________________________________________ Album Review / Pop Mitchell Brings Perspective and Wit to 'Taming the Tiger' By ROBERT HILBURN ****JONI MITCHELL "Taming the Tiger" Reprise Mitchell displayed once again on her recent concert tour with Bob Dylan and Van Morrison that she's interested in more than just our applause. Rather than serve up familiar material from "Ladies of the Canyon" through "Court and Spark"--tunes that in the '70s made her one of pop's most revered figures--this classic songwriter showcased lesser-known but equally challenging works, including two from this album. She may have lost on the applause meter to Dylan and Morrison, who did employ hit-based, listener-friendly sets. But Mitchell walked away from the shows knowing she had given the most gripping performances. She continues in that independent--and winning--spirit on this, the third in her distinguished series of '90s albums. Backed by superbly tailored, jazz-accented arrangements that are at once aggressive and soothing, Mitchell, who doubles as producer, turns commentator in a couple of places, including a snarling slap at the state of contemporary pop: "Formula music / Girlie guile / Genuine junk food / For juveniles / Up and down the dial / Mercenary style." Chiefly, however, Mitchell reflects on love, tempering her optimism with the caution (and wit) of someone who never forgets the accompanying struggle. Mitchell's songs have always acknowledged the complexities of relationships, but these songs are framed with the same kind of mature perspective found in Dylan's recent "Time Out of Mind" album. That doesn't mean the outlook here is as dark as in Dylan's superb collection. In the closing vocal, in fact, Mitchell delivers a moving version of "My Best to You," a disarming toast written in the '40s by Gene Willadsen and Isham Jones. It's an interesting choice because the sentiments may be simply too innocent for the artist in Mitchell, but they obviously reflect something of the idealist in her. * * * Albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent). ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Sep 1998 22:01:05 +0100 From: catman Subject: Re: TTT Gets 4 Stars from L.A. I'd like to comment on a few subjects in this week's JMDL: - - "I'm mad as hell..." I too, was shocked at Paul's petty attacks; two in a row, no less! And I too, was inclined to attack back. But then I saw that there was plenty of that. Even Ashara, (who I've never met, but I just can't get over the kindness and bravery of opening her home to us... wish I could have been there), who I don't think I've ever seen a negative post from, really let him have it, and justifiably so. None of us joined this group for negative reasons... we love Joni, that's what brought us together. And we keep coming back because we find each other interesting, stimulating, and usually, very pleasant and enjoyable company. I just want to say this; when I first joined this group, just two months ago, Paul was among those of you who sent me a warm and personal welcome. Have you all noticed that he hasn't posted since those attacks? Paul, I don't know what is going on in your life, but I'd like to tell you a trick I've learned. I work in a sometimes stressful office environment. Every time I catch myself writing email with an angry tone to it, I send it to my "drafts" folder and make a note to review it the next day. Usually, in the calmness of a new day, I end up sending it to the trash can. If I still think the criticism is valid and needs to be heard, I try to rewrite my mail so that it's clear that it's the idea that I think is flawed, not the person. - - Bios: I'm really enjoying these. It's nice to learn more about all of you. I've long kept a list of books to read and music to buy, and it's really grown since I've joined this group. I'll add my bio to the mix tomorrow. It was nice of Marion to make a place to put them under her section of the website, but that is still kind of tucked away. I've been meaning to add myself to the Gallery, and I was just wondering what you all, particularly Les, thought about putting the bios in with the Gallery?? - - Cookbook: Great Idea! So it's nice to welcome back, after a four year absence, the original and, indeed, the greatest of them all to show everybody how it should be done. The openining of "Lead Balloon" (""Kiss my ass," I said/ And threw my drink") suggests Mitchell may even have taken on board some of the post-Alanis Morisette feminist aggression, but the pay off ("Must be the Irish blood/Fight before you think") reveals that she's just being playful. There's a similarly light mood to most of these tracks. It may be that one of the reasons Mitchell has never achieved the mythological status of her most obvious male contempory, Bob Dylan, is due to her preference for detailed miniatures over grand statements. Her only state-of -the -nation address comes on "No Apologies" ("What happened tp this place?/ Lawyers and loan sharks/ Are laying America to waste"). Of course, another reason Mitchell has never been seen as a rock goddess is because she is not a rocker at all. Her jazzy oeuvre, boasting rhythms and melodies as sophisticated as her wordmanship, is probably too subtle and complex for mass consumption. She builds these tracks around gentle surges of rhythm with her soft-toned acoustic guitar to the fore and her vocals laying emphasis in unexpected places. It is amusing to speculate how immediate and powerful some of these songs could be in the hands of a rapper, but the title track, on which Mitchell describes herself as "a runaway from the record biz", makes it clear she's disillusioned with the whole game: "The radio blared so bland/ Every disc a poker chip/ Every song just a one-night stand/Formula music, girlie guile/ Genuine junkfood for juveniles...it's hip! Its hot/ Life's too short". That's telling them Joni. " Well maybe he doesn't know too much about guitars, but I'm sure he means well. Did Jackson actually appear in this Joni song that came some time before 'Not to Blame'? Also of interest to those of you who are fans of Tolkien & 'The Lord of the Rings' I came across a reference in Entertainment Weekly to an upcoming live action 3 film version of the trilogy. Apparently Peter Jackson (does anybody know who he is?) is going to direct with principal photography happening in New Zealand sometime in the next year or so. If you go to you will find a Q & A session that Jackson did for concerned fans of the books. Apparently the keeper of the web site got over 14,000 questions from fans & narrowed them down to 20. We probably won't see these films for about 3 or so years but I think it's really exciting to think about. I always thought the Ralph Bakshi animated version was pretty bad. A live action trilogy of movies could be incredible if someone would do them right. From the way he answered these 20 questions it sounds like this guy really wants to try & do just that. So the chords he played in concert were different, which explains why I never noticed their Joni-ness before. Later in the song some Joni-chords pop up on keyboard, and the "bop bop bop bop" vocal intro into the backwards stuff at the very end of the track is definitely in Joni harmony. Also noticed some Joni harmonies in the second verse of "When Doves Cry." AzeemAK wrote: <<>> I listened to this on headphones, and it really does recall her technique, but not in the chords per se. The opening chord to PR is plain vanilla major, and the rest aren't much more complex. The strumming patterns are classic Joni, though. Even more interesting to me was to notice that the VG-8 tone Joni uses the most on TTT sounds almost identical to this guitar sound. For a second I thought I was listening to "Tiger Bones." Could it be the influence has come full circle? :-) On Don Rowe's suggestion I did go back and listen to "Beat of Black Wings" after my extremely satisfying jaunt through _Purple Rain_, and he's right--the keyboard chords do sound similar. I have to say, though, the recent admirable defense of its merits notwithstanding, CMIARS's flaws are only magnified when juxtaposed with a work of staggering brilliance like PR, especially when you consider that a lot of the sounds are the same between the two albums. It's not the production I don't like on CMIARS, it's the fact that the production is not used very well and the songs are way underwritten. Maybe Dolby's touch was the magic ingredient on DED, because Joni sounds far more at home among those synthesizers than CMIARS's, IMO. CMIARS has long been my least fave Joni album, by far, and listening to it right after PR has only intensified that opinion. Not exactly the result you were looking for when you suggested it, huh Don? ;-) - --Michael, who is also convinced that Radiohead have spent a lot of time listening to PR's title track NP: Prince and the Revolution, _Purple Rain_ P.S. to Colin: O(+> is the keyboard notation for Prince's post- 1992ish name ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Sep 1998 20:26:37 PDT From: "Jerome Gonzales" Subject: LA TIMES REVIEW Pitiful that this ran in SATURDAY instead of the Calendar on Sunday but that's how they shafted "Turbulent Indigo" as well... MITCHEL BRINGS WIT, PERSPECTIVE TO 'TAMING THE TIGER' ALBUM REVIEW:POP **** (that's FOUR out of FIVE stars!!!) JONI MITCHELL Taming the Tiger (Reprise) Mitchell displayed once again on her recent concert tour with Bob Dylan and Van Morrison that she's interested in more than just our applause. Rather than serve up familiar material from 'Ladies Of The Canyon' through 'Court and Spark'--tunes that in the '70s made her one of pops most revered figures--this classic songwriter showcased lesser known but equally challenging works, including two from this album. She may have lost on the applause meter to Dylan and Morrison, who did employ hit-based, listener-friendly sets. But Mitchell walked away from the shows knowing she had given the most gripping performances. She continues in that independent-and winning-spirit on this, the third in her distinguished series of '90s albums. Backed by a superbly tailored, jazz-accented arrangements that are at once aggressive and soothing, Mitchell, who doubles as producer, turns commentator in a couple of places, including a snarling snap as the state of contemporary pop: "Formula music/Girlie guile/Genuine junk food/For juveniles/Up and down the dial/Mercenary style." Chiefly, however, Mitchell reflects on love, tempering her optimism with the caution (and wit) of someone who never forgets the accompanying struggle. Mitchell's songs have alaways acknowledged the complexities of relationships, but these songs are framed with the same kind of mature perspective found in Dylans's recent "Time Out Of Mind." That doesn't mean the outlook here is as dark as Dylan's superb collection. -ROBERT HILBURN (God, I'd out and out HATE Hilburn of he weren't Joni's cheerleader!) Nope, don't have the rookie card, I just don't know how to spell McGwire, believe it or not. I gotta like the Giants chances, a hot team going against the lowly Colorado Rockies, (no offense Rockies fans, certainly not from a Twins fan, ouch!) and the Cubs at the mighty Astros.
