You know, 500 jmdlers, 100 willing to donate,,,,,,,,,badabing....a new stove that she can cook our recipies on. But we won't expect her to give us the cooked food back, because that would be a quid pro quo and we all know that is bad giving. Huh????? Isn't it a great idea????? Huh??? Ohhh! Ok! Yes, I see. It's another turd in disguise. !!!!!!The stove, not the cookbook. The cookbook is a great idea. But I agree with Paul I , there is probably not enough time to do it right and maybe it should be a standalone idea. pj ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1998 11:11:30 PDT From: "Don Rowe" Subject: Re: TOP 10 JONI SONGS *NOT* TO PLAY AT A WEDDING Picking up where Suze left off ... >This one had me rolling on the floor this morning. Paul, Cute pun, but I disagree. All we need to do is give everyone one week to submit via email/or attachment, a "recipe page," with whatever they want to fill it with. (It could be a page on aroma therapy ideas....) We can get really unordinary about cooking up whatever.... In the meantime, someone could be working on the cover. Someone else transfers the email onto Microsoft Word. Someone gets it printed and bound. And then Wally or Les or someone representing the press for the JM Internet Community, hands it to her at one of her concerts. The contest I was having for a couple of videotapes--which very very very few participated in, I have to add--is over. We have a winner. Helen, the one on wheels, the one down under, clinched it. So, a couple of tapes--"Milk & Cookies" & "Bats & Balls"--will be winging to Australia soon. Since she is a budding filmmaker and I am a budded filmmaker, I may include some of my *art* pieces, too. (See what you could have had if only you had played?) Thanks to all who entered. Oh, the final answers (if anyone really cares)to my favorite songs on these albums: Hejira: Song for Sharon (altho, if pressed, I would have accepted Coyote, too) Dog Eat Dog: Good Friends Night Ride Home: Passion Play Wild Things Run Fast: Love (tie breaker) An Aside: I think that WTRF is an overlooked album. And the other day, after I had heard "Trouble Man" on the Eastwood album, I had earlier Joni in her rendition of that song, and I realized yesterday that the Joni I hear on Trouble Man is the Joni from WTRF. The whole WTRF album is bookended beautifully with Chinese Cafe and Love--two songs that borrow from other people's work but that she uses amazingly well--tenderly, soulfully, almost plaintively. And the songs in between are not bad either. I like the jangly sound of it and the fun she has on it, too. Okay, enough of this aside. One big collective hip hip hooray for Helen, the winner in the Guess my favorites contest! No need to equivocate: this was jazz, undisputed. I think I understand how Joni is seduced by the jazz medium. It's a limitless musical frontier with vast constellations of depth and feeling to explore. It's clear why she would want to collaborate with Metheny and Blade. Their musical inflections were precise, yet seemingly random, like the soothing subsconcious sound of synapses firing. I was amazed at the emotional impact they achieved in me without a single lyric. Pat Metheny's mastery of the guitar is almost a proverb - and he earned the accolades again - but Brian Blade and Larry Grenadier are the most vibrant young voices of the new generation of jazz players. Brian is a drumming genius. He used mallets, drumsticks and brushes on his skins and cymbals, evoking the percussive subtleties of a gentle, steady rain morphing into an etherial storm. Grenadier purposefully strummed the fretless stand-up bass as if it were a part of him, meshing seemlessly and provocatively with Metheny and Blade's smooth, syncopated licks. This trio played like the best jazz ensemble in the world, yet this is the first timed they've toured together. They did their first gigs at the Monterey Jazz Festival last week and finished a mini-tour with six shows at Yoshi's. Yoshi's is a beautiful, world-class, jazz only venue. They book awesome talent. In October alone Al Dimeola, Chick Corea, Tuck and Patti, and Bruce Hornsby solo, then with an eight piece band, will play week-long stands there. Nice sushi bar, too. And sake goes great with jazz, I've found. I'll be a fixture there on this, my birthday month. That's all I want. Metheny paused at one point to let the audience know what pieces they had played. He mentioned that one song was one that he had done with Jaco Pastorius. It was awe-inspiring, but I can't recall the name of it. I did have a chance to meet Brian Blade after the show. He assured me that he will be playing with Joni at all the shows on the upcoming tour in the East. What a sweet, shy fellow - and so very young to be so accomplished. Same goes for Larry: he can't be a day over 25, but such a virtuoso on bass! How about this jazz and swing imbued generation X? Who would've thunk it? I'm somehow encouraged by this socio-musical phenomenon. Perhaps the best is yet to come. - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1998 15:29:54 -0400 From: Scott Emery Subject: Is Joni coming to Ottawa? From where I live, the North Sea is approx. 150 miles away. They just catch crabs there, though. And unless you live right on the coast, they're no good either! Check out this ecological nonsense: Because labor cost is so high here, the crabs are loaded onto huge refrigerated trucks and driven down to Morocco (1,500 miles), where they get peeled manually and from where they are shipped back to the EU- markets - maybe even to a supermarket in the very harbor town of the North Sea fisherman! The entire process takes about two weeks. There is refrigeration throughout, and they are permitted to be sold as "fresh crabs", but you still taste the mileage, IMO. And in Austria the alpine trees are dying away because of air pollution, leaving the villages void of protection from avalanches and rockslides. And the EU is preventing Austria from introducing highway tolls for trucks. This sucks. Paul, I guess there are certain advantages to living close to coastal areas (like good seafood), but, apparently, there also are some disadvantages! Let's hope, Georges won't hit Florida too hard. Keeping my fingers crossed for all you Floridians out there. Marian, I really like the JMDL-cookbook idea -- if not for Joni's birthday, then as a "normal" project, as Paul suggests. I'll be more than happy to contribute a recipe... just haven't made my mind up yet, whether it's gonna be a German or a Danish one! It's starting to get eerily quiet. It's been pretty hot, sunny and breezy most of the day, a real good beach day if you like the beach. As the crow flies, I live less than a mile from Hollywood Beach, a little bit south of Ft. Lauderdale. Got some water, extra batteries, candles and food. Had to miss General Hospital because the only thing on the regular channels all day has been Georges, Georges, Georges. Now I'm just hearing the screechy sounds of drills putting up storm shutters. (at a cost of $400 on and $200 off, yuck!) I keep praying for the worst of it to pass us by. Schools and offices are closed too. I've lived through Andrew and although we didn't have major damage ( fence, roof, downed trees) it was pretty scary. No electricity for a couple of days sucked too. All the preparation news in the media can make you crazy, then we have all the aftermath stories to look forward too. I'm getting a little nervous in expectation of howling winds, driving rains and flooding for the next couple of days. Can anyone suggest any suitable "waiting for a hurricane" Joni songs? So I sent up my prayer, Pearl ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1998 18:36:23 -0400 From: heather Subject: Re: Birthday Idea (JC) At 12:54 PM 9/24/98 EDT, you wrote: Here are some ideas >for a great quiche recipe: > >Quiche and Spark >Quiche at the Window >Solid Quiche >I had a Quiche >Immposible Quiche >Edith and the Quiche >Quiche Me (i think I'm hungry again) >Big Yellow Quiche >Quiches of the Canyon >This Quiche Tonight >Let the Quiche Carry Me >The Only Quiche in Town > >Enough! We are protected by the indentation of the coastline as well as the Gulfstream. We've had two hurricanes land here in the last 60 years, one was right after the Beatles played here in 1968 (?) and that one, David, actually hit us from behind by making landfall on the gulf coast and then crossing the state. Only once in the past 100 years has a hurricane made landfall in Jacksonville, but that one, Dora, hit right at the mouth of the St. Johns River so it caused a lot of flooding.
