It sounds pretty easy really. Did I understand correctly that I could use lemon pepper (plus a little salt and cumin) instead of your secret mixture? Paul, if I want to spend a fortune it is possible to get fresh imported shrimp in Austria, but I only ever buy frozen jumbo shrimp, also expensive, but very good quality and almost as good. I love the idea of a JMDL cookbook and am willing to help put it together. I love the idea of each JMDLer submitting a favorite recipe for it. Should this be a printed cookbook or can it be a cyber one? I have all of my recipes at: http://www.jmdl.com/guitar/marian/recipes.htm I could put all of the JMDL recipes into a similar format using the recipe software (Mastercook II) that I have. We could have a JMDL Recipes page, if Les is willing. Maybe people who like the cookbook idea could have a look at what I've done with my own recipes and then we could discuss format. Maybe some of you would have ideas for making the JMDL page more attractive or better organized than my very basic personal recipes page. I also have a newer version of Mastercook that allows more flexibility in how the recipes are printed/displayed. Anyway, I like the idea very much and am willing to help collect and format the recipes and set up a page for them. Where the Artist and Chaka are gathered together I always search for Joni Content. Alas, the alleged Chaka "Hejira" cover did not surface, but I did notice something I had never noticed before. The Artist did "Darling Nikki" from _Purple Rain_ towards the end of the concert (which is amazing in and of itself--it's a very unusual song for him to choose). The keyboard he played had a very open sound, and there was much more "separation" between the notes of the] chords than on the record. So he's playing along and all of a sudden I realize that these were Joni chords!! Not that there's any specific song from which he lifted them, but they are definitely strange, not quite major and not quite minor. All of a sudden the Joni influence he's touted for years made sense in a very concrete way. Go listen to your well worn copy of _Purple Rain_ and tell me if you hear it. - --Michael, who likes the cookbook birthday present idea a lot ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1998 08:19:02 -0400 From: "M & C Urbanski" Subject: Re: JMDL Cookbook - ---------- > From: Julie Z. Joni makes choices based on her artist, exclusively. This is what I most admire about her and why I've designated her my mentor and weather vane. When someone decides to follow the muse exclusively there is always backlash. Joni has experienced a great deal of adversity in her life based on unequal treatment as a female (starting with the Roy Rogers/Dale Evans conflict as a child (ref. Gene Autry Concert), the barbaric way Kilauren was brought into the world, being treated like a wilting violet by managers et al during the folk circuit years (woodstock), being labeled as a "chick" singer, the jazz backlash, etc.) but the driving factor behind her choices are always honesty as an artist. In some ways, taking a feminist stance works if it opens up the channel to her source of creativity. Thank Deb, for taking the words out of my mouth when mentioning the feminist songs that Joni has written. I would add that Hissing of Summer Lawns is a complete feminist treatise, IMHO. So asking Joni to take a stand and label herself a feminist for the sake of those to come, is honorable, but may not be what Joni can do because of her calling. Ani DiFranco's calling may be in the same medium, but may not be for the same reasons. That's entirely OK. Joni made these choices: preferring the company of men; choosing the Dylan/Morrison tour over Lilith; continuing to resist the label of "female" songwriter, even if it puts her in a position of Holy Priestess of Rock. Ani may be disappointed but Joni is not a soldier, she's an artist, and someone is always going to say, "Joan, you're great but why can't you do it this way?" ____________________ /____________________\ ||-------------------|| || Sue McNamara || || sem8@cornell.edu || ||___________________|| || O etch-a-sketch O || \___________________/ "It's all a dream she has awake" - Joni Mitchell ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 Sep 1998 10:37:41 -0400 (EDT) From: Thomas Ross Subject: Re: JMDL Cookbook funny and a good idea. wonder if j got 'come out kitchen' from robert johnson. I guess it is a good idea if we are reminded from time to time that the entire world does NOT regard Joni as she-who-is-perferct- and-can-do-no-wrong (SWIPACDNW - a new acronym!). These two posts showed up yesterday on FOLKDJ. I received permission from the authors to post them here, deleting the e-mail addresses and, in one case, the name. Please DON'T try and respond to Rich Warren directly. I posted my response to FOLKDJ and will shoot it to you guys in a few minutes. Date: Tue, 22 Sep 1998 11:20:36 -0500 >From: Rich Warren Subject: Joni Mitchell Joni Mitchell opened the new Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago last Friday evening. The new school (The Chicago Folk Center) is beautiful and wondrous, and its intimate, 400 seat auditorium has terrific sound. I don't normally post reviews, but I felt the following comments were essential. Most of us were raised on Joni Mitchell. Few would dispute she was one of the most brilliant singer-songwriters of the 1960s-1970s. She never claimed to be a folkie, and went off her own way in the 1970s. I have seen Joni in concert twice, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and she was magic. Her performance at the Old Town School on Friday was one of the most dreadful I have heard from anyone, and I said so on "The Midnight Special." She acted like she wanted to be anywhere but the Old Town School, and that performing was the worst way to make a living. She bitterly complained about being passed over for several music awards. She never acknowledged the audience, and did not speak, or even look up until after her third song. She played the same electric guitar throughout, with a monotonously limited range of chords. She performed no songs written prior to 1990 other than "Big Yellow Taxi" which coincidentally is the name of her upcoming tour. Her vocal range is shot, condensing her voice into a near monotone. Her new songs seem lyrically interesting, but nearly impossible to comprehend because the sound system operator equalized her voice by removing the treble to conceal her vocal flaws, and articulation is not one of her attributes. After a six minute ovation at the conclusion, she refused to perform an encore. Rumor has it that someone in the first rowed yawned which set her off into a tantrum in the green room. I don't know why the Old Town School chose Joni Mitchell, as Pearl Jam would have been just as close to folk music and probably would have had a better attitude. The school is a wonderful institution in a glorious new home. May it prosper another 40 years and may it never invite Joni Mitchell back. rw Rich Warren / "The Midnight Special" WFMT Radio - 98.7 FM - ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Sep 1998 17:02:50 EDT >From: (anon) Subject: Re: Joni Mitchell Rich's description of Joni's performance at the Old Town School reminded me of the time I saw her as part of the Troubadours of Folk on the UCLA campus in L.A. about four years ago. Joni came on dead last, at around 9:00 pm on a damp and chilly night. Most of us had been there since early afternoon, enjoying such musical highlights as Janis Ian, Bonnie Raitt and Judy Collins (in glorious voice). Joni was the "piece de resistance," and we were all looking forward to hearing her. She appeared to be in a very foul mood, announced immediately that she wouldn't be playing any "old" songs, then proceeded to butcher the first song she tried, so much so that she had to stop and start again... it appeared that she couldn't remember the chords. This happened once more than once. Gone, also, was her ability to jump octaves, leaving a fairly limited, pedestrian vocal range. I was shocked and disappointed beyond words, and wound up leaving after her third song (I wasn't alone). What a shame --- here is an artist so many of grew up idolizing, pretty much delivering the kind of performance she herself would probably decry as being unprofessional. I'm reminded of something Janis Ian said at a recent seminar, that, as artists, we lose some rights, including the right to be unconscious or to screw up big time on stage. I don't think any performer has the right to insult and discredit her audience by giving a lackadaisical, slipshod performance... especially an artist of Joni's caliber. They are, of course, entitled to their opinions, and I would not dispute them, but there are, what, 600 to 700 people on this list, and if they go by what (anon) and Rich say, the next time someone mentions Joni to them, they'll likely reply "Joni? I hear she really sucks lately." Well, I'd like to present both sides, now. :) (Couldn't resist, sorry!) I was not at the Chicago show that Rich saw, but had feedback from friends who were, and I was at the '93 concert (anon) referred to. I also saw Joni twice on her recent tour with Van Morrison and Bob Dylan, and 17 times over the years since '69. Trying to sum up the main points of each post, I come up with: 1) She's got a lousy attitude, 2) She doesn't perform many of her old songs, and 3) Her voice is shot. Attitude? Again, I wasn't in Chicago, but I've seen Joni have off-nights. She has opinions, and often expresses them. I certainly didn't see the foul mood (anon) did in LA. To me she was loose, friendly and charming. Perhaps if (anon) hadn't left after three songs, she would have seen more of that side. Old songs? Joni once said "No one ever asked Vincent to 'Paint Starry Night again, man'". She is a woman approaching 55 who has never stopped writing incisive, insightful songs. She's not about to go out and do an oldies tour, or play the county fair circuit. Not only does she find her newer material more interesting, but it would be somewhat ridiculous to hear a woman of her age singing songs of teen-aged longing, when she can sing songs of mature love like "Facelift" or "Crazy Cries of Love". This is not a knock at Rich, who I know has played lots of Joni on his show, but I've noticed that many people seem to have stopped listening to her after Court And Spark, in '72, so they think that any unfamiliar material is "new". This is her setlist from the Chicago show: Slouching Towards Bethlehem (1991) Sex Kills (1994) Turbulent Indigo (1994) Harry's House(1975) Sunny Sunday (1994) Hejira (1976) Love Puts on a New Face (1998) Crazy Cries of Love (1998) Happiness is the Best Facelift (1998) Big Yellow Taxi (1971) Just Like This Train (1972) Black Crow (1976) "A fairly limited, pedestrian vocal range"? Again, I hear things differently. Who would expect ANYONE to have the voice they had thirty years ago? Joni's voice has matured and deepened. It doesn't have the range it once did. So? Listen to what she's doing to the songs! Listen to the interpretations she's putting on some of the covers she's been performing lately ("Comes Love", "Summertime", "Stormy Weather" or Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man"). It's too bad the sound guy in Chicago was not being helpful. This is too long already (sorry, Mike!) but I hope that you all will keep an open mind here - check out Taming The Tiger (released next week) check out one of the shows she's doing with Dylan in October. The Joni of 1998 is not the Joni of 1968 - in my opinion she's a heck of a lot better. We all hear and see things differently. I'm sorry Rich and (anon) had bad Joni concert experiences. As in most things, though, there are other opinions.
