First I received a copy of the Day in The Garden Joni performance which is slowly circulating around the list (I have dutifully spun a number of copies to keep the music sharing ;-) This is my favorite live Joni tape yet -I think the rousing cheers and screams of the jmdlers in the background actually enhance the whole listening experience. Joni sounds the best and most relaxed I've heard her this year. Her voice is very emotive and give the chills in parts. Isham and the band are incredible. You lucky Gardeners really saw an outstanding performance - just magic. I've also received tapes of really beautiful music by jmdlers Claudia San Soucie and Bryan Thomas which I've been listening to repeatedly. They are both outstanding! And then I received the video of our days in Ashara's garden, aka JMDLER Home Movie. I'm still wondering how Ashara managed to capture 48 hours of revelry and music in a 90 minute video! What a great job! And even though I embarrassed myself numerous times on the tape I still thoroughly enjoyed it and really appreciate having the memories to rewind and play again. There is much wonderful music along with lots of cute, funny and just plain old darling moments on it. Marian, Michael and ChuckE - what stamina - you guys really worked it the whole weekend keeping the bamba going! We all look like a bunch of little kids at a birthday party during the dollyshit giveaway and the trivia game, strap-on tiger noses and all. Viewing this tape is a little like listening to a Joni album - you have to view it several times to really catch every great moment. This group has definitely proven once again that it knows how to party. Thanks to all you who share and give so much. Apologies to those who have received it already. ....So in the wings I was there watch this guy not really mention who I was, just dressed like me in dungarees and skinny tee shirt and cap, say things like, 'there's this guy in our year who doesn't play the guitar and only sings songs by Joni effing Mitchell and they're the saddest effing songs in the world and it's depressing,'. So he starts this racket of noise and I let him play for about a minute. Then I come up behind him and the audience knew what was going to happen as they started to go 'OOOOOHHHHH'. I whip my hat off him and tell him to leave. I then sit down at the mics and ask for some technical assistance like a pro. The sound engineer runs out and adjusts the second mic to guitar level and asks me if I'm okay and I say yes, couldn't be better. I then start the opening arpeggio to a song I had practised for days. I then realise that I haven't introduced the song properly so I stop and say,'This song was written by a woman for an album that was released the year I was born. Joni Mitchell wrote this song from the point of view of a woman and I am singing this ssong from that same point of view, but singing to me, if you can imagine that. In a way it's an apology to the person I'm seeing as I have been a bad boy recently'. And at this point I have picked out Laura from the crowd and she waves me a discreet aloha (she's American, lived in Hawaii). And my year by this time are intrigued as I never mentioned I was seeing anyone, let alone that it was a woman! I never discuss relationships in public, they're for us only. Taking a deep breath and a silent prayer, I start 'Woman of Heart and Mind' properly, going thru the changes completely, and then comes the verse for nothing and the crowd get really excited to just hear the guitar only and expect me to do this solo section. I smile and say 'I'm not that brave'. and start the final verse.The last upstroke of the guitar and the crowd jumps to its feet. Needless to say it was my finest hour on that stage and proof that the best things come out of oppression and conflict. Like Joni being asked to play Just Like This Train quickly and have more time to chat. Instead of how she eventually did it. I know that this was long and long but it is an event that has stuck on my mind. They were at the FEZ in NY for the interview and then they went to her house. They showed writing on the walls in her house of music that he was working on. I guess when something came to him he just wrote on the wall in his house, so not to lose it. I don't know anything at all about him, but they did show film clips of him playing bass and i've seen a lot of Mingus stuff on the list, so there you go. It reminded me of an older Joni--but I am not sure which one--definitely after Hejira--or is it Hissing of Summer Lawns. She is more expressive and free and having fun than I have heard from her in a long time. Not on her albums, anyway. I have made a compilation tape and included her version right before Marvin Gaye's version. Also, Massive Attack fans--on the tape I made, I juxtaposed song #4 on the Mezzanine album (I can't remember the name but it is the one with all the great drums) with JM's Dreamland (followed by Stevie Wonder's Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing. followed by Fiona Apple's Sleep to Dream). The Massive Attack drums followed by JM's drums are great--try it some time for an aural treat. Now, a question. If Kyle E. plays only bass, how does he get a to make a record under his name? I don't even hear much bass on the record--or am I looking for Jaco type of bass here and am not going to find that. I am not a musician nor am I conversant in the musical ways. I know what I like and I know music when I hear it. On this record, though, I hear all the other instruments. Oh, wait, I am hearing bass right now. Oooh. Another "beware" factor, though: 20 years ago (or so) I sponsored an Indonesian child through one of the big organizations (the name of which I can't recall at the moment). I dutifully sent my $19 each month, wrote letters and sent photographs, and I received a photo and some letters in return. The letters I received were obviously written by an adult, and it was explained to me that my 8-year-old girl (Surhani) told an adult what to write, and the English translation was what I was getting. Some time later I was notified Surhani and family had moved to another fishing village, and I was assigned a new child. I got a new photograph and began to receive letters, and it was explained that these letters were actually written by the child herself, who I recall was 13. The trouble was that the handwriting was EXACTLY the same as the letters "dictated" by Surhani! I wrote to the organization to express my dissatisfaction with its lack of honesty, and cancelled my sponsorship -- with a certain amount of guilty feelings. I did not receive a reply of any sort. I'm just not sure how much I trust that these organizations are really helping the children they claim to be helping. Anyone else had experiences with sponsoring a child?
