From Wally's bio page: The Farm Aid concert was held in Champaign, Illinois. Joni volunteered to perform at the benefit partly because her mother had grown up on a farm in Saskatchewan and Joni had always fancied herself settling down on a farm in her later years. List member David Rind writes: "During the mid-80s, while she was not touring regularly, Joni occasionally took the opportunity to appear at what she considered worthwhile benefits. These included "Farm Aid" and "Amnesty International." Even though she actually excelled at these events, they unfortunately left her with the opposite impression - that her music was no longer valued. They thus served to validate her decision not to tour." It reads "She has been forging an uncompromising trail through heavy underbrush for more than 25 years now, but when the time comes to talk about the pioneers who made the current women-in-rock revolution possible, everybody is always forgetting about Joni Mitchell." I have a friend who is a concierge at a fancy hotel and for a couple of days last week, the goddess stayed there. He did not tell me--because he probably thought I would have camped out there and I probably would have. Even on Saturday afternoon, when I asked if she were staying there, he ignored my question. Rude, I thought, but we moved on in the conversation, and he was at work. He and I met that evening becuz we were going to a Massive Attack concert--which was great, btw. (I was listening to their new album, Mezzanine, last night and I swear, I heard the influence of JM on one song--especially DJRD and the percussion.) At the end of the evening, as I was driving him to his house, he asked me to stop at his car becuz he said he had something for me. He opened the door and pulled out a long-stemmed rose--a pale yellow/orange perfectly formed rose. He handed it to me and said--this was in Joni Mitchell's room (I swear there was a hint of cigarette smoke in its scent) and she looked at it and in fact, she was carrying it. It seems that someone had sent the roses to JM and they were in the room. When Joni was leaving she carried the roses with her but she stopped in the gift shop before she left the hotel. My friend, knowing my obsession, sauntered inconspicuously into the gift shop behind her. She asked if they carried American Spirit cigarettes. (They didn't/don't.) Before she left, the gal behind the counter told JM that the flowers were really beautiful. Joni looked at them and then at the woman and said something like these are not going to travel well, why don't you take them. And then, she handed the woman the roses. And left. My friend wandered out after her and she went to the wrong bank of elevators and seemed confused. He asked if he could help her (I was so jealous that he had spoken to her) and she said I can't find the elevators to get down. He pointed her in the right direction and she disappeared into the elevator and the brass-plated doors closed. My friend went back into the gift shop and begged the woman to give him one rose, so he could give it to me. She gave it up and I have the rose now, sweetly scented by nature and the cigarette smoke of the goddess. I hereby dedicate "Good Friends" to my friend, Richard, and hope that all of you will play it in his honor. The idea of sending her Vodka & cigarettes made me laugh, however, because it reminded me of my granny in Charlottesville. For the twenty-five years that our Grandmother lived with us in Livonia MI & Raleigh NC, she was extremely tough to buy gifts for. After several years of white sweaters, "Best Grandma in the World" statuettes, and other assorted trinkets, I hit on what was my best gift idea for her: a carton of Winstons, which she loved, a 12-pack of Budweiser, which she also adored, and a National Enquirer. She always looked forward to my gifts, even though she knew full well what they would be. Over the years, I have developed a philosophy about giving and receiving gifts - - they are a way to let a person know that you love them the way they are or you don't. I think gifts are one of 2 things; either you give someone something they want, or you give them something YOU THINK THEY NEED. My gift to Pally (My Gramma) was my way to tell her, I love you with all your vices and all. All I ever want for gifts is music - all I get is books and sports shirts... Pally, btw, has outlived all 3 off her kids and is still in Charlottesville, still smokes too much and loves a cold beer when she can get it. I think a gift of Vodka & cigarettes (even the concept of it) is a subconcious way to tell Joni that we love her even with them ol' bad habits. I don't think it's at all practical, or even possible, but I like the concept. Also am pleased to find another SC member on the list (Columbia), I had been labeling myself the only JM fan in SC, looks like I might be wrong (yet again). Wally said in his message that there are more tour dates to come: I'm betting that they'll include some SE locations and some SE JMDLer's can arrange a get- together somewhere - maybe in Greenville, SC if she plays the Bi-Lo Center (Elton John & Phish have just signed on to play here). But no matter how impressive the sound system, it is meaningless without meaningful music. That's where Yarrow, Joni Mitchell, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch and, yes, even Hirsch the guitar player came in. .....And it's why Mitchell could hold court Friday with her electric guitar and its digital treasure chest of oddball tunings, doing little more than regally sashaying in place. In lieu of showmanship, they brought stories that clamored for attention, poetry that demanded to be sung. Of all the performances, Mitchell's was the most anticipated, if only because she so seldom tours. Friday's show was her first in Chicago in 15 years. Those expecting a flashback to Mitchell and her "Blue" period of confessional folk tunes probably left disappointed, but the 54-year-old singer put on a ravishing performance of her latter-day, jazz-tinged material. To the uninitiated, it was particularly jarring to hear Mitchell follow Yarrow, whose wry renditions of his Peter, Paul & Mary hits evoked a simpler era when social consciousness went hand in hand with a hearty singalong. The grandfatherly Yarrow was wonderful, particularly as he ad-libbed his "Puff, The Magic Dragon" into a talking blues about Old Town's budgetary travails. In contrast, Mitchell offered a more tangled perspective of the world, as she sang elliptical melodies and pulled abstract clusters of notes from her guitar. Her vocal inflections were from the jazz world, though her songs were so dense and wordy that they limited her ability to experiment with phrasing. With her wide mouth, blond shoulder-length hair and willowy physique, Mitchell was a luminous if somewhat distant performer. Her songs demanded that listeners meet her halfway, or else fidget in vain while awaiting "Woodstock" or "The Circle Game." She offered only one early hit, "Yellow Taxi," which she sang with loose-limbed aplomb, then turned into a goof with a dead-on Bob Dylan impression. Otherwise, she traced her growth with highly personal selections, beginning with a series of scathing social commentaries ("Sex Kills"), followed by a handful of troubled love songs ("Sunny Sunday") and finishing, like the traveler between worlds that she is, with two scenes from the road: "Just Like This Train" and "Black Crow." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Sep 1998 22:59:25 EDT From: Chilihead2@aol.com Subject: The Ny Club seeking help on purchasing tickets & the Mrs. Chili B-Day setlist Hi , I am sending this to the list because we (the NY bound concert JMDlers) are still looking for options to buy tickets for the NY show--shows? I sang some songs for her : Crazy, Lover's Lullaby (Janis Ian), Case of You, Foolish Games (Jewel), Magdalene Laundries, Oh England (Kate Bush) and Summertime (The Platters version). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Sep 1998 02:17:53 -0400 From: trxschwa Subject: ani article (jc) this is a great thread and everyone, everyone is keeping it from being unpleasant. i have a couple of points. 1. should ani have turned an interview into a screed? this whole idea was a piece of very creative marketing. that is by definition a gamble, sometimes it works. this time, it may just have been brilliant, it may tank. we don't even know yet, but i'll bet a few ani fans pick up joni, and that's a great thing. it might have even been a home run, controversy is buzz, never forget. i'm thrilled that reprise is thinking... 2. pissed that joni didn't know her music? oh come on. the line was 'Because she has never heard my music and underwent the usual struggle just trying to pronounce my name' but none of you suggested that she was pissed off about name mispronunciation. whether you agree with her or not, it was an extremely articulate and impassioned article that couldn't have come from pettiness. she wrote from the heart, honorably. 3. sour grapes about rights? as michael so eloquently said >WHAT?!? the passage about joni owning her own rights, like so many passages in the article, is practically worship. it reads 'Now, when Janet Jackson samples "Big Yellow Taxi," the money goes to Joni, thank goodness. If only Bo Diddley had been as savvy about his fair share.' this is classic political ani, pointing out a major shame of an earlier system (r&b artists who were ripped off by early contracts is one of the worst crimes of the music business) while saluting a heroine who broke the mold. fred, you really misspoke on this one. this leads to my thought that a lot of you have missed huge parts of this article. it really was written by an educated fan. there is so much praise, from beginning to end. ani writes 'she is one of the great songwriters of this century. Period.' and that's one of many truly complimentary lines. ani wrote an appreciation piece, by any definition of the term. 4. deb thornton's most recent post, written with a care that i appreciate, still struck me with this one. >Ani's interview underscored for me, again, that there are women who whine >and there are women who go out and get the job done well, ani certainly falls into the category of people who 'get the job done'. she broke the mold and started her own label, striking terror into the hearts of corporate geeks. 'righteous babe' actively works to enrich buffalo-area vendors only. buffalo, ny is an economically depressed region and they appreciate her 'getting the job done'. if joni, 20 years later whines about the company not pushing the product while still being in the 'hand that brings me things i really can't give up just yet' and ani starts a label, employs people in the area she grew up in, and releases what she cares about, who's getting the job done? 5. and there was this quote >"Righteous Babe" (perhaps that should be "self-righteous")> which sure sounds like an angry man is an angry man but an angry woman, 'bitch!' i really don't like to see anyone insulted for suggesting that joni is not god, whether it's me, ani, or anyone else. joni's comments about feminism have been wrong all along; they've been candy to those who have an agenda of denying women the very reasonable goal of self determination. and immensely hypocritical, from someone who has self-determined so much. it's high time someone called her on it and she couldn't have asked for a more loving and respectful goad. patrick np - nothing ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V3 #367 ************************** Don't forget about these ongoing projects: FAQ Project: Help compile the JMDL FAQ.
