Without sounding too Polly Anna, there are no bad seats. Some are
better.I saw her in San Jose and had a fantastic time in that huge
arena. The emotion was not lost. This idea that seeing her in a small
venue or up close IMHO dosen't hold water. If I were anywhere near one
of the cities she's scheduled to preform in, and it was the last seat in
the house, I'd be there.
 It's not everyday that she comes out.

Hi everyone,
      Right now, I'm in the enviable, rather hectic midst of creating the 
Website pages for Joni's new album, Taming the Tiger. Gee, I love working 
on Joni's stuff! The album package is beautiful- this time it includes a 
20 page booklet, with the lyrics, credits, etc., plus 10 reproductions of 
Joni's paintings! If you also count the painting on the compact disc 
itself, that makes 11, and if you include the painting hanging on the 
wall in the one photograph used (on the pack of the CD), that makes a 
total of 12 JM paintings in the TTT package. To add to what's out there 
in the collector's market, the still promo-only CD-single for "The Crazy 
Cries Of Love" has another one of JM's paintings on it's cover. It's a 
scene with Don Freed and Joni (who, of course, are the writers of the 
song) in "the back booth of an all night cafe," drinking coffee and 
smoking up a storm. 
     As to Joni's upcoming concerts with Bob Dylan, I was asked to keep 
the information quiet until next Monday when all the papers were signed, 
but once again the Dylan troops leaked out the dates to the Web. Oh, 
well. It's great news that Joni is doing more shows with Dylan, and that 
some of the dates are in cities in the east where she hasn't appeared in 
a long time. It will give many of you folks the opportunity to see her in 
her current performing glory. And there are more shows still to be 
announced...
     As to the JoniFest next August, it was interesting to hear all your 
opinions regarding what type of event it should be. With some of you 
being kind enough to volunteer to be children-sitters, I see no problem 
with the weekend being open to families. It's obvious that we each have 
our own needs to fulfill with this weekend, so there's room enough for 
everyone to enjoy themselves in the ways they wish to do so. 
     The JoniFest logo is something I'm really looking forward to 
creating. As soon as I get the TTT site up and launched, I'll begin work 
on it. If anyone has any ideas for the logo, please e-mail me privately. 
I'm always open to suggestions. Thanks!
     As to Joni's birthday, I agree with the person who wrote that we 
should keep it simple. One card, or even a card each from those who want 
to participate would be better than something grandiose such as a 
computer or a billboard advertisement. I feel that those things are 
invasive and rather disrespectful of Joni's desire for privacy. I know 
that all the ideas come from a place of benevolence towards Joni, but 
let's keep what we send her for her birthday to something that she'll 
actually possibly take a minute to appreciate.
     In regards to your e-mails about my health, I'm in the middle of a 
short delay in beginning my combined radiation and chemotherapy 
treatments, which is just fine with me. I'm glad to have this extra time 
to finish up my work on the TTT pages. I now begin my treatments on 
September 28th and they'll continue for 5-8 weeks. 
     The "Sounds" page audio files are now back up and on a new server. 
Thanks to Betty for moving the files for me and for fixing the problem as 
soon as I let her know that I had one.

It’s so delightful to open up the JMDL Digest that I look forward to
reading every day and discover that a birthday idea I thought was a
rather good one (let’s not dare to mention what it was again!) has been
variously labelled "nerdy", "cold and selfish" ,  "intrusive" and
"manipulative" (implied).  So I sit here wondering how I’m supposed to
take that.  Do the people who say these things intend that I take what
they say personally?  It’s certainly hard not to.  But then, the people
who said these things have no way of knowing that I’m not a nerd, that
I’m not cold or selfish, that I would never dare to intrude on anyone,
least of all Joni, and that, as I mentioned before, I would never in a
million years expect or want or even imagine that Joni should feel like
she had to respond directly to JMDL after receiving this item.  So they
must not have meant to attack me personally, right?  So why am I sitting
here agonizing over this anyway?  Why should I care?  It’s such a stupid
waste of my time!  Wow, I’ve never felt like the JMDL Digest wasted my
time before!  That’s terrible! Maybe I just got up on the wrong side of
the bed today and I’m just feeling more overly sensitive than usual.
Maybe I should just forget this ever happened!  In any case, I guess I’d
better be careful what I say around here from now on, because I *hate*
feeling like this!!!

It's been while since I've posted.. so busy with school....But,,,
I'm so shocked and excited about *finally* seeing the woman who has made
such an impression in my life.

I've been a JM fan since 1968 and I have *never* seen her in concert.  In
fact the last concert I saw (other than symphonies) was in 1972. Ok, I know
some of you are shocked but since moving to NW Arkansas the pickings are
slim and I've been busy these last 20 years raising my kids.  I really got
burned out on concerts in the 70's when the artists were so wasted that the
music was garbage. I decided that I'd rather stay at home and turn on my
stereo.

I've decided to go to the Indianapolis concert. It's the closest and would
probably get better seats than Chicago. I'm even going to miss a day at
school!! 

For those of you that haven't joined the appropriate concert list yet,
please do. There are people like me that would enjoy this concert more if
we could be with other JMDLers.

Is there anyone on the list that lives in Indianapolis???

No one has mentioned if the tickets are on sale yet... are they?

To our dear Marian-
I know it is hard not to take these things personally.  After all, you and
I and the other JMDLers have opinions, do we not?  We should be able to
express our viewpoints without fear of being chastised verbally.

There are some people on this list who have met Marian.  I am one of them
(2x now!) and let me tell you ... Marian is one of the nicest, mild
mannered, TALENTED, leveled headed people I have had the pleasure to meet. 
Instead of lashing out at one another, can't we ask first?  Like "What
exactly did you mean when you said ____" or "Can you please explain
yourself a little further?".
It takes very little effort.  And you can ask that person in a private
e-mail, you know.  You don't have to be public to the entire list if you
don't want to.  It is called common courtesy and respect which EVERYONE on
this list deserves.

Now isn't this a shame!  It's not a very nice thing to stiffle people.  Who
on this list thinks they are better than anyone else??  Come on, lets hear
it!  Let's be done with this once and for all.
We are here on this list to discuss all things Joni and have FUN doing it.
I think everyone one on this list is an itelligent human being (unless they
prove to me otherwise ;) and we can all act like adults.

I'm so happy for you Diana!  Don't feel bad.  The first time I saw Joni was
this past August at A Day in the Garden!  Joni has been making a lasting
impression on my life since 1970.  When I saw her come on stage I got
honest to goodness goosebumps (or should I say JoniBumps :-)

it was a lousy idea.  I didn't think it was necessary to analyze her motives,
as some did. 
   I simply, and I suppose strongly, expressed the thought that neither the
computer gift nor the collection of funds for same were appropriate.
  So as for her feeling that there were personal attacks involved, I think she
is wrong. I think the criticism was of the idea, not the person, and maybe she
is being a little oversensitive to think anything more of it.
 I think Marian is a wonderful, talented person who loves Joni, maybe a little

I was thinking something along these very same lines a day or so ago.  I
think what makes Joni so great is the fact that her songs are not only
intelligent, eloquent, musically innovative & beautifully crafted, they
are also full of so much genuine, honest emotion.  To me, that is the
essence of great music or great art.  Joni is a master of her craft; but
she also has the ability to project herself honestly into her work and
make us feel.  Joni's heart combined with her genius is what sets her

I was wondering-is Tiger Bones a hidden track on TTT? Like, after My Best
To You, is there a brief silence and then Tiger Bones fades in? There have
been a few CDs I've heard that've done this sort of thing: #34 on DMB's
Under The Table and Dreaming, one by Janet Jackson, etc.

There's a fairly large article on Joni in today's Denver Post (p. 5E).  I
haven't read it yet, but it look like a pretty good read.   I suggest that
anyone who has the means gets their hands on it.  After I read it, if any of
it is worth trascribing, I'd be more than happy to oblige.  Just so you know!

any previous groupings. And, I don't know if anyone else has posted this, but

here in New Orleans. It was at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in a very small

Hi friends,

I haven't posted for about a month.  Does that make me a "lurker"?  What
an ugly phrase/image.  I think, if we were all together at a party or
something, I'd be the same way.  In any setting with a large group of
people, I tend to be quiet and stay in the background.  In Joni's words,
"there's this reef around me."  It's not depression or disdain so much
as introversion and awkwardness... Anyway, I read and enjoy your posts,
but it usually takes a digest with several things I want to respond to
before I'm motivated to post.

- - Depression thread:  I greeted the recent news reports, linking time
spent on the internet to depression, with quite a bit of skepticism.  I
remember, about a year ago, CNN ran a story saying, "recent studies show
that children who spend time on the internet every day get better grades
than those who do not; proving that time spent on the internet increases
academic performance."  Um... how about, maybe, smarter kids are more
curious about the internet, books, and everything else? The media does a
very poor job of separating correlation from causation.  Likewise with
this depression story, they said people tend score lower on mood tests
after spending time on the internet than they did before, but did they
compare it to other activities, like reading a newspaper?  No, they
didn't.

- - Joni's Bday:  This is a tough one.  As much as I love and relate to
Joni's Art, she is such an enigma to me.  I love her insightfulness, I
feel for and relate to her melancholy.  Yet, she is a rich and famous
person who has relationships with other rich and famous people, and she
makes her living entertaining huge crowds of people.  So many people
love her; it has to be intrusive; she probably has a bodyguard.  So, do
I think I "know" her?  Not at all.  Her life and mine are as different
as they could possibly be.   I'm inclined to agree with Phillip and
Paul, IMHO the computer and the 'photos of ourselves' ideas both seem
rather self-centered and presumptuous. If she wanted a computer she
would have one, and as much as we would like her to know who we are -
from her perspective, our faces are just a few more in the crowd...  I
kind of like the whimsy of the tequila and cigarettes idea, but then
again, these are both destructive things (I really wish she would quit
smoking, because I care about her).  I guess my favorite idea is the
card, with a note saying we collected and gave X-$ to her favorite
charity -- in the name of the JMDL, so those who can't afford to
contribute aren't excluded.  After all, don't people create art to
relate to and connect to other people?  Therefore, I suspect our best
chance of bringing a smile to her face on her birthday would be to let
her know that she connected with us in such a way that it motivate us to
give to a cause she cares about.

Hey Howard-
    Sorry it took me so long to respond to your post, but I wanted to
research this topic a little more before I responded to it. I could not
find any way to program different amount of distortion or overdrive
different strings. It does have the capability to adjust the amount of
sensitivity (in relation to the pick up) to each string. There IS a way
to control the amount of wet/dry to an effected signal. I am going to be
playing with the VG-8 some more today and I will see if I can find out
some more info for you. I do know that the changing the types of
speakers and types of mics can vary the sound alot. And the EQ control
on here is incredible. It is my opinion that what you are probably
hearing is a very EQ'ed signal and minimal amount of overdrive, etc.
Give me some times on the recording and I will see if I can duplicate
what you are hearing.

Subject: Singing Joni's songs

Today I learned Refuge of the Roads on my guitar.  It is such a
beautiful song!  I never paid much attention to it until I heard Sue
McNamara's beautiful rendition of it on A Tape of You.  I put off
learning this song for Boston, because I was hoping to hear Sue sing it
in person, but alas, she could not go.

My favorite part is:

"These are the clouds of Michaelangelo
muscular with gods and sungold
shine on your witness in the refuge of the roads"

I have felt so many times a wordless wonder when I've seen beautiful
sunrises/sunsets/cloud formations.  I love Joni's words - they really
capture that feeling of awe when in the presence of incredible beauty.

It's astonishing to discover this song after so many years of knowing it
was there but never paying much attention to it.  One of the most
amazing things is that Joni sings it with so much feeling!  I mean, all
of her songs have feeling, but this song - there is something really
remarkable about the feeling that comes through in it.  This song is
full of Joni's soul.

Tonight when my girls were getting sleepy, they came downstairs and
curled up on the bed and asked me to sing songs for them.  So I played
them ROTR - introducing it as a song Joni wrote about travelling alone
in America.  The older one said - "She went alone?  Without her Mommy?"
I thought that was so sweet!

Then I sang them Cherokee Louise, one of their favorites.  And Number
One, and Only Joy in Town - they laughed at the part about him
"breathing in women like oxygen"!    Finally, I started playing Hejira
and they finally fell asleep.  It was nice that they listened to me.  It
has been a really nice day.

I hope that our friends in New York are having a great time. It's the San
Gennaro festival as well in Little Italy and everything smells like Sausage
and Basil. And then of course you have to stop at Ferrara's for pastry. 

Mrs. Chili and I celebrated her Birthday by going out and buying an easel ,
one of those cool kind you take apart, for painting outside. She usually works
in oil, but she's going to try her hand at watercolors this week. I let them
(ie. the people we bought the easel from know about Joni's painting and new
album --plug--plug). Mrs. Chili is off this week so were just going to really
play the artists here at "Garden House" --me writing my novel and Mrs. Chili
painting and playing the piano. I may try to get back to the guitar. I
received some very nice posts from Marian and PJ about starting. I would also
like some input from Michael P. He just blew us away at Ashara's!    

My Best to all on this wonderful late summer night. Going to sing very loud
around the piano tonight just so you guys can hear us in Greenwich Village and
hopefully in New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Topsfield, Seattle, Michigan, Georgia,
Colorado, California, Holland and Vienna!

I'm reading a book called 'The Mansion On The Hill' by Fred
Goodman. His book, in his words examines 'Dylan, Young,
Geffen, Springsteen, and the head-on collision of rock and
commerce'. It's a very interesting look at the business side
of rock (sadly, the only side left).
    So, of course, you know what you do. You go to the index
and look for Joni Mitchell. Here's something about Joni, but
more about Elliot Roberts, 'cause, remember, it's about the
business of rock 'n' roll;

     'Compared with David Geffen,  Robert's tenure as an
agent was brief. In early 1967, he heard Joni Mitchell, whom
Neil Young had befriended three years earlier in Winnepeg.
The 23 year old had found her voice as a songwriter, and
Roberts was excited by her singing and what he rightly
perceived as a sufeit of superior songs. "She was a jumble
of creative clutter with a guitar case full of napkins, road
maps, and scraps of paper all covered with lyrics," he later
recalled. Roberts quit his job at William Morris to manage
Mitchell. She was scuffling along on fifteen-dollar-a-night
gigs at New York's Cafe Au Go-Go when Andy Wickham
(executive) at Warner/Reprise Records tracked her down and
offered her a recording contract. Roberts enlisted his
friend and mentor David Geffen, as her agent.
  While Roberts flew to Los Angeles to meet with Wickham
and  Mo Ostin (head of W.B. Records),  Mitchell went on the
road for a string of club dates. In Coconut Grove, Florida,
she met David Crosby of  The Byrds. Renowned for both his
generosity towards good musicians and an affection for
attractive women, he became an immediate Mitchell supporter
and offered to produce her debut album. He also became
Roberts's second client. His support of Mitchell was
important in two ways: Crosby introduced her and her manager
to the Laurel Canyon cognoscenti, and his presence in the
studio allowed Mitchell the freedom to make the record she
wanted without any overt interference from Reprise.
  Settling into Hollywood's Sunset Studios to record 'Song
To A Seagull' while Buffalo Springfield was there working on
what would prove to be their final album, Mitchell eagerly
introduced Roberts and  Crosby to Neil Young.

This line has been driving me mad! My take was that the record company boss

"Sick her Rover" could either mean abuse her dog (but Joni makes it
abundantly clear in TTT that she is a cat person), or vandalise her British
car.

Hi Jacky,

I'll allow Azeem to fill you in on Lloyd Cole and Jill Sobule. I know Lloyd
Cole from the Commotions years ago ("Perfect Skin" was their magnificent
first single) but I've lost touch with what he's doing. Jill Sobule, I
don't know at all, but Azeem says she's great.

I hope we can continue to meet and bring more into the fold. Meeting at
musical events is a bit less daunting / more spontaneous than an evening in
the pub or restaurant, so I suggest we just drop a quick NJC on the list if
any of us are going out and interested in JMDL company.

Synchronicity strikes again, sister. Just before leaving town to attend a
wedding outside of Saugatuck, Mi, where we found a lovely Martha Stewart style
cottage, I'd started learning ROTR for the exact same reason as you. This is a
quiet town, sleepy even, since tourist season is over, and I could just kick
myself for not having packed my guitar. The wrap around enclosed porch would
have been the perfect setting for my Joni Jones.

Her singing on this song IS spectacular. There are just a handful of songs
where Joni almost strains her voice, getting out every ounce of emotion out of
it. This is one.

	This evening, we had a wonderful yet unexpected dinner with an interesting
couple who had attended an August, week-long workshop facilitated by
Donovan (of the "Mellow Yellow" fame.) I believe it was in Omega New York
at a retreat with a "New Age/Music-Vegetarian" perspective.
	Donovan, who currently resides in Ireland, was teaching a course about
finding the "hero" within you....and the different levels that go with that
journey.  He taught this workshop playing and singing many songs to
illustrate his points.  (Ashara might be able to do better job trying to
describe this "hero" philosophy....Ashara?....)
	Anyhooooo, on the last day of the workshop, Donovan, with lots of
excitement, expressed that he was excited about the upcoming weekend,
because he was going to be seeing his very good friend, who he hadn't seen
in a long time, Joni Mitchell, at "TheGarden".
		Very cool, no?    Wishful thinking:  Wouldn't it be very interesting for
a bunch of us to do a week-long music retreat someday in Omega?  It sounds
like a wonderful place with a varitey of organized workshops to chose from,
(My friend Jeff, took an amazing percussion workshop, while Kathryn was
with Donovan.)  There are private cottages, a community dining hall and
simultaneous camps for those with children.

Dear Branch Mitchellidians, 
	(Let's all get our husbands/SO's to enroll in the "Chili School for
Romantic Living."} Im afraid Chili, "That Romantic Guy," has become the new
JMDL heart throb...time to make room, Rob J---(that British accent,
sigh)----Doug, sigh sigh. Kingpin, sigh, sigh, sigh...and Happy---our Jmdl
"notasonovaPreacher Man" ....  This Chili's scoring big points:  gardner,
novelist, Joni-quoter, nude sunbather, artist/wife-lovin,
window-sign-hangin, guitar-playin, garden-cookie-bakin... kind-of-Guy.
It's no mystery to us **why** he has back problems....
	Now onto Joni Does NY:
	 I didn't put Oct 31 and Nov 1st together!  God, we will be in NY for
Halloween! This is going to be too much fun!   (Maybe we can give Joni her
IBM computer BD present: (SCREAMMMMMM)when she comes to our hotel halloween
party, where, of course, we'll be dressed as characters from her
songs----which no doubt, she will find---even more frightening?!?! But
