I don't know, but I will ask Sarah Conner, our famous jmdl DJ now in Knoxville, since it is her birthday today. Serendipitously, I ran into Sarah at the mall earlier this afternoon, and she is the first person in Knoxville I knew by sight and greeted, since I moved here Monday! This is special, I think, and nice to be included in her BD plans after her radio shift tonight. She says hi to all. (Her new boyfriend is an absolute doll, lucky girl). Also I dreamed of Joni 2(!) nights in a row!!!!! Wed. night before we even knew about her upcoming shows, I dreamed she was performing folkie style on a stool in duets with a woman who looked like Laura Nyro... then last night I was following Joni around backstage like a puppy, just thrilled to be in her presence. What was strange was that she weighed about 200 lbs. and had a few moles on her face (the light bumpy types), and I kept trying not to be rude by staring in bewilderment at her drastically-altered appearance. Dr. Mondegreen????? These are the first dreams of Joni I have ever recalled having, so her aura is strong in me this week as I unpack 79 boxes in my new house. Marilyn ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Sep 1998 21:06:40 EDT From: DKasc13293@aol.com Subject: Attitude Adjustment Required I popped the TTT CD for it's inaugural run through the streets of NYC with, what I think, considerable success. Let's face it, although brilliant, TI is such a tragic asylum. Oh the pain, the suffering! Everything I dreaded and everything I feared came true, and every last chance I had considered, was lost! I seem to carry the most recently released material closest to my heart. I've maintained a desire to relate to, and identify with Joni's persona as when I was originally hooked early in my adolesence. I've been deeply connected from the beginning. At times, through the later years, I'll admit to forcing the shoe to fit. Is it an attitude adjustment she is asking of me this time out? It's a conscious journey into show business for her, as far as I can see. Joni's out there this time around. Well, as much as I think she is willing to ever be a very public person again. Unwilling to be anyone's sin eater, she is still that sinner of some position. She assumes her role as entertainer by welcoming us to Harlem in Havana and the big stage. Man from Mars is a glimpse of the backstage action. The naive personal story of a lost cat. The Klein connection to it's conception, makes it all the more poignant. I hear in the heavy horns a big band sound reminiscent of the swing era, or a prom orchestra in the late 40s. There's a lot of that in this album to me. To my ear, the Joni back-up choir sounds like an Andrew Sisters' arrangement on The Crazy Cries of Love. Lyrically, "He said you think you're a lady, but I know you're a woman. We are as young as the night" is so much fun (even as a guy) to sing. Sticks to the roof of my brain, where it has managed to stay entire days at a time. Although, the deep thinker is less evident in this material, there are still very heartfelt lines: "During times like these, the wise are influential. They can bear the imperfection. They can keep the harmony", and of course, "happiness is the best facelift". I didn't initially pick up on the fact that Joni was just as much a lead balloon when he said,"sic her rover", but she is. I was also thinking about everyone of those people so stumped by my admiration for Joni's music, who don't understand how I didn't give it up decades ago, like everyone else they knew. It makes me laugh to think I'm still here, hearing and connecting with a significant part of my youth. I'll admit that I am somewhat fatigued by the knocking lawyers theme. What is uncanny however, is the timeliness of songs like "No Apologies". Similar to "Not To Blame" and Simpson, "No Apologies" could reference Clinton's address to the nation. "What a lofty title, for such a petty little tyrrant", is sincerely one of my favorite lines on this album. This is Joni's best vocal performance on the album simply she is the most comfortable with the octave and range of this song. The synth keyboard gives the illusion of flight to me on the title track. Ethereal in all respects, Joni's gliding through a dark night sky, above it all. Above the business observing the "forest of the night" filled with tigers. This is a precarious place for a bird in flight. Yes, it's impossible for a bird to tame a tiger. Nature has relegated birds a food source for cats. Where, but above it all, would someone find a self- respecting survivor like Joni? I think this album builds in strength as you progress through it. Wayne Shorter, although predictable at this point on a Joni album, makes the train come to life on the "Crazy Cries of Love". Mark Isham's playing on Stay In Touch is hauntingly beautiful. This is the track that first caught my attention. I'll admit to being the most comfortable with songs like this from Joni. What if Miles Davis were still alive? I thought, as I have and will on occasion, play this song and Facelift on repeat mode. Comfort in meloncholy, not exactly. This material is secure in it's hopeful outlook. More attitude adjustment required here and I'd say. These two songs are my favorites of this collection, with "New Face's" smiling guitar coming in close third. People seem to be very receptive to it. They've heard snowfall in the music, and in Joni's voice. They've also heard a completely different voice from when they abandoned her gift. I can't wait to play it, near a fire, holding my man somewhere in the Alps in February or even Florence in the Spring. Similar to the use of heavy synth on the song "Shadows and Light", "Here's to You" is a superstructure. The sentiment is consistent with the album, and makes me smile. I'd say Joni sounds an awful lot like Edith Piaf on this track. An attitude adjustment is again required. Having the fatalistic sentiments of Job, to overflowing good will as the final statement is something I welcome. I welcome having a shuffle in my step again. Thank you for reading this. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Sep 1998 18:39:15 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: (NJC) Joni tour mailing lists! As a previous concert list leader I did the updates for the list of names of people attending the SoCal concerts, gave out general area and hotel information and, with the help of Steve Dulson and Ken Corral, arranged for dinner and drinks meet and greets, ticket purchases, jmdler concert seating locations and stuff. It involved some work but also was a lot of fun and a good way to meet and gather with fellow jimdles. Terms like "pinhead" and "jerk" are pretty benign when directed at an institution with the history and profile of RS, and not at any named individual. MP's comments were not meant to be ad hominem, I'm sure. RS has certainly been called worse, and they often print such epithets, directed at their own magazine, in their "letters" section." Hey Julius- I wasn't feeling eloquent at all that day, and time is always a factor, but you very eloquently put this in perspective for us. Don't know if you heard or not, but the Tan Canary (Johnny Adams) died a few days ago. We did a tribute to him on the show last night. He was an amazing singer and his voice will live on.
