(It's difficult enough to encourage our own lurkers to come out and join us!) There is, of course, the safety factor to consider -- so far we've had the extreme and perhaps unanticipated good fortune of not having encountered any "wackos" at any of our in-person get togethers. Opening JoniFest to the general public may change that ... however, with the '99 gathering being held in a "neutral" place other than someone's private home and with JMDL members in high attendance, we should be just fine. My thought is that we shouldn't turn anyone away who wishes to attend. We should also find out if alcohol is allowed in the skating rink and put down money to reserve it immediately if the plan is to open the Fest up to Joni Mitchell fans and not just the jmdl. Hence my call for any good planners in the midst to step forward, there's lots of work to be done! >Something billed as a convention will do more pr harm than good, if only 100 fans and family members show up. On this I respectfully disagreed. It's not being billed anywhere as a convention. I know that I used that word, but it's only being advertised at this point on the website and the digest. Whether it's 10 fans and family or 100, I think that the point is quality and connection on a variety of levels. It is, however, the original hope of the first planners that it will grow into a mature and wonderfully functioning Fest. I decided against inviting "Significant Others" so that we could feel free to 'OD' on Joni music, inside list jokes and Joni-fun without having to worry about boring the Significant Others to death. Joni's performance of Trouble Man is a joy to listen to. It's really a treat to hear her do covers like this, and I'm excited by the prospect of her doing the album of covers that she's talked about. She has a lighthearted style (considering the song), and incorporates a lot of her trademark singing techniques; in keeping with the duality of her nature, she delivers the song with a mixture of world-weariness and playfulness. I don't think the raw pain of Marvin's original version will ever be matched, but I'm happy to have both versions. The other cuts are good, and though I agree that the cover of Why Can't We Live Together, because of its production, stands out from the rest of the album, I like the track, as did Don. So did Columbia, I guess, since they're using it to push the album. Diana King, sounding better than ever, really sells the song. I was expecting to read a flood of reviews yesterday on the list, but I've only seen two (Tom's and Don's -- oh and of course Wally's). Has anyone else bought the album? Sending her a computer - it's a really nice thought, but it sounds like something The Joker would send to Vikki Vale in Batman. It would probably scare the crap out of her! ("Who ARE those JMDL guys?!") Here's a more restrained idea but along the same lines - Just send her the whole interactive 'intranet' birthday card on a floppy disk. (My entire 80 page website weighs in at under 1 Mb, so there's a lot you can do with 1.38 Mb) And leave it up to Joni to find a friend with a computer running Netscape or Internet Explorer if she wants to, or even has the time. Send the disk to Joni with a note telling her how to drag it onto the desktop and click on the index file to get started. That way we're being far more inventive but no more intrusive than anyone else sending her a regular paper birthday card. If she wants to click on the external links and surf off the original disk, it's up to her. Or she can just bin the disk without a shred of guilt if she wants to. If anyone has writable CD we could put it on that to give it a bit more of a professionally pretty look than a plain old floppy, and have over 400 times more space as well. No, joni did not self-will her music into my life. i've never met her except to say hello once in passing. i heard 'for free' on a tape in a Thunderbird in 72 and never looked back. it was meant to be that i was introduced to her music and dug it. i do not expect or care if i get a post from joni. i have 18 albums of 'posts' from her. she doesn't owe me anything. a dark place... you took it there, not me. i spoke for my Self, not yourSelf, or anyonesSelf. me, mySelf, sees it as self will to buy someone i do not know an expensive gift in the hopes that they will use that gift to contact me. it is a horrible assumption on your part to assume i speak for a group when i speak for myself. you voice your opinion. you think buying her a computer is a good idea, and you say so. i do not think so, and i say so. we gave her a card last year. i think she really liked it. it didn't demand a thing. a simple, creative all inclusive card would be sweet. perhaps add cheer to her birthday. maybe, maybe not. so far, as the tally goes, six agree with me, one does not. I now have a love/hate relationship with my computer and the internet. The JMDL/JMHP have been a beautiful discovery in my life, where I have come in contact with so many kindred spirits, and made so many new friends (all in the name of Joni). Funny how it always comes back to Joni (whom {lol} I discovered back in '71, and has been soothing me and healing me ever since. I do find it a little strange sitting in my studio in the dark, late at starring at a square box, laughing my ass off at the latest rantings from someone/somewhere on earth and being able to rant and roll myself. I was talking to Ashara the other night on line and she suddenly became aware of her open window and how she had been sitting there in the window cackling at the one liners I was firing away at her and she wondered what the neighbours were thinking. Whom Cares!!! I much prefer talking to Ashara sprawled out on her living room floor with the ominous computer screen in the back ground, but I will take my dark nights at the computer screen light touching base with people I love. As I demonstrated to Marion and several others at Ashara's. The VG-8 can produce straight acoustic sounds without all the chorus effects that Joni is obviously fond of. When she first got the thing she really went overboard with the effects and even some distortion, and of course VERY heavy bass (as one can hear from the NOJHF recordings or videos) When she started playing at that gig there was over 30,000 people in front of the Ray Ban stage at Jazz Fest. When she finished there was less than 5000 of us. She scared the shit out of alot of people that day with the Technology (and probably a few who just wanted to hear whatever it was they wanted to her and she didn't play), but once again the girl knocked me on my ass. I was blown away! She always does it her way, which is quirky, yeah that's it, quirky.
