Learn Joni's tunings and chord shapes! Play around with them. Sue
Mac's, Howard's, Mark's and my guitar pages all have transcriptions of
Joni's songs. Pick something like Sweet Bird and work with the tab -
tune your guitar according to the tab and use a capo if necessary to
bring your guitar into the key Joni uses on the recording and ***play
along with her*** - just listen, listen, listen (you probably know it
all by heart anyway, but it still helps to listen and play along with
her - I do this all the time when I'm learning Joni's songs and even
occasionally when I'm reviewing stuff I've already learned).
Sue Mac once said something like "I never felt like I could play the
guitar very well until I started using Joni's tunings and playing her
songs. It's like someone waved a magic wand and I could play really
beautifully."
I think this is so true - that you can make beautiful sounds on the
guitar with Joni's tunings and chord shapes almost immediately, even if
you don't know very much about playing. Playing Joni's music is really
not very hard. I wish I had known in Boston that you were interested
and I would have sat down with you and got you started!
Please let me know if you have any specific questions about playing
guitar and I will try to help you, okay?

Subject: Mr. Eastwood, today's the day.
Hi everyone,
In stores today is "From There To Here," the debut CD from bass
player Kyle Eastwood, son of actor-director Clint Eastwood. Joni's ex,
Larry Klein, produced the album, with guest vocalists Julia Fordham,
Diana King, and Joni herself turning in a performance on one song each.
Joni does a soulful version of Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man," which is
similar to the live version she did at the TV taping in Burbank or at "A
Day in the Garden," but with a few inflections and lines which are
different. For example, on record Joni says: "I ain't gonna let it sweat
me none" instead of "I ain't gonna let it get to me." It's very cool!
In the album thank you's, Eastwood says: "To Joni, for that 'voice!'"
And In a recent interview, he also said: "That was really something.
Getting Joni on there. I was originally going to do an instrumental
version of the song, but..." Read the rest of what Kyle said, and view
his album cover at this address/URL:

I haven't kept up with all the card ideas, but I really like this one -
send her a map of the world with a red dot marking the home town of every
JMDLer. We could think up an appropriate title for the card/map ...
something like:
Places you are always welcome with a guitar and a song!
or
Some of the places in the world that have been touched by your music
Also, this one would be relatively easy to coordinate. The idea of each of
us sending in photos, or even video clips may be nice, but actually
putting something like that together would take some work. A map, with
markers for each of us, and a collection of birthday wishes inside sounds
good to me!

On the surface, I like the idea, too.
But when you put 500 red dots on a map of the world, with a conservative
estimate of 20 percent of them duplicating sites, the ultimate effect would
not be very impressive. It would, for the most part, look like a vast
wasteland with a few red dots, not the message we would hope to present.
Not even 5,000 red dots would give her the impression you are seeking,
though it might come close.

I'm not sure - it depends how big the map and the dots are! If you had a
map that was about 20 x 30 cm (8 x 11 inches), and pea-size dots, I don't
think the effect would be too much of an empty space. True - some areas
(parts of the states and Canada) will be well represented, whereas others
(South America? Asia? ) may only have a few lonely dots - but
overall I think it could give a nice representation of folks from all
over the world who enjoy her music.
If the title for the card was something along the lines of:
"Just some of the places that have been touched by your music"
then you make it clear that this is just a fraction of her audience. I
guess she knows she has many fans from all over, but to actually see a map
like that might be nice.

Hi,
I've decided to take advantage of this time that I have "off" for my hardward
installation because who knows how often I'll be posting when I'm "back" to
work (pun intended). But you guys have become good friends so I am sure I
will still be posting. I'll just have to stop doing some other things.
I made a poster to hang in the front window yesterday that said, "Impeach Mr.
Clinton and we voted for him twice". Mrs. Chili made me take it down. She said
that our neighborhood is too conservative. Now I have had a rainbow flag
hanging in the front picture window since pride day in NYC. Still I acquiesced
and took it down. In any event, I wanted to vote for Hillary both times.
Marian, Mark, and PJ offered to help me learn the guitar. I can still hear
Marian's Cotton Avenue. What great playing! Looks like I'll just have to go
to Vienna for my music lessons. Couldn't think of a more appropriate
city----"if you got a place like that to go you just have to go there".
Mrs. Chili is painting another sunflower painting. I hope one of these days
she doesn't hand me her ear and say "Guard this object carefully." In any
event, she's off to work and I'm left with a kitchen and a garden full of
vegetables. Help!!! Where's Martha Stewart when you need her! Actually, I
prefer the two fat ladies even if they aren't vegetarians.

But then I think of Joni's "world view" with these immortal words

Thanks for posting these books. I started a video documentary a couple
of years ago called "I Was a Teenage Homosexual" and did six or seven
interviews but never finished it. The interviews are still good--it is
people talking about growing up gay--but other things got in the way.
At the time, it seemed like a herculean task. And I needed more
interviews. And now, I think I need some famous people to tell their
stories.
But I will take a look at these books--the way I shot the interviews was
to have a photo of the interviewee as a teenager projected behind them
as they spoke. Sounds a bit like the book . . .

A while back I think someone from Chicago mentioned that a local radio station
is sponsoring (or is otherwise involved) with this event.
Is this true? And does it mean that this concert might be simulcast...and

Thanks for the thoughts concerning values. Here are some more.
GOD'S GRANDEUR
by Gerard Manley Hopkins
The world is charged with the grandeur of God.
It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil Crushed.
Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
And wears man's smudge and shares man's smell: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.
And, for all this, nature is never spent;
There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs -
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.

Listening to the utterly delightful Kyle Eastwood release. In this era
of fashion-ad swing nostalgia (Cherry Poppin'Daddys, Brian Setzer
Orchestra, et al), it's really refreshing to here some genuine loving,
careful arranging -- dished out by some players with real concept.
Larry's done a fantastic job of staying out of the way and letting the
fantastic line-up just play ... in fact, the only thing that really
stands out as packaged is the Diana King number, which seems slightly
out of place. Diana's voice is great, don't get me wrong, but "Why
Can't We Live Together" seems self-consciously "poppy" against the
backdrop of the rest of the CD. Joni and Julia are both dynamite, and I
think "Trouble Man" will be just the shot in the arm I'll need to get me
through the next 2 weeks. JMDL, go get this one for the whole thing,
not just the Joni bits ... it does not disappoint!

the song was from, and she told him Blue. "Depressing" he said. "Good" but
"chick music" he called it. She told him that she had taken the album to

'Firebird Suite' Saturday night ...I started thinking about
it and I thought I could see some connection. Maybe it's in the way she
weaves various solo instruments into her musical tapestries as in 'Down
to You'. It seemed that 'Firebird' used a lot of solos, individual
voices making the musical statements rather than a whole section or
orchestra. Of course the end of the piece uses the whole orchestra and
is so grand and impressive. I'm not a musician so I'm struggling here.
Would anyone else care to elaborate on this? I'm not comfortable saying
too much about something I don't know that much about.
You've got a pretty good handle on it to me Mark. Joni's not the only
artist of the "rock era" to refrence Stravinsky, most notably Frank Zappa
and Yes(who have used the finale of the afore mentioned 'Firebird Suite' as
the intro music to their live shows since around 1972) Stravinsky has been
touted as one of the grandfathers of pop music and one of the main reasons
is the very one you've noted here. Your also right on target noticing how
using one or a few instruments for the main melodic themes make the full
orchestra passages that much stronger. Another good Stravinsky piece to
check out for Joni comparison would be 'Persephone' or 'Petrouchka'.

been indulging in this secret for some time now...but none of you told me, you
bastards!!!)
as with many of joni's other albums, my initial response was not altogether
positive. they all sounded too much alike, with that spacey, celestial
sounding guitar-synth thing she has going on here...but that was petty. i
just did not respond to the album. but it was joni, after all, so i kept
playing it in my car, to and from work. after about 3 days i caught myself
humming one of the songs at the kitchen sink. ("nice...kitty kitty" i am
embarrassed to say...) after a couple more days i decided i seriously LOVED
several cuts. a few more days and i now think this disc is an out of the park
home run (except for the "big boo hoo" which i charitably will assume she
wrote while experiencing a small, unobtrusive stroke!!! talk about an
abberation!)
ok. ok. here is my question list. this initial lack of a positive response
is not new to this album, not for me and not for many other joniphiles. i am
not a musician, so this may be a dumb question (i'm getting to it!) but could
this have something to do with the alternative tunings? could it be that
those tunings produce work that is just atypical enough that it requires some
acclimation before it can really be heard? am i asking this clearly enough?
maybe one of our esteemed musicians (michael
paz...roberto....claud....marian....many many more) could tell me what they
think. i know that joni's music does not have the usual hooks and her
melodies take a few listens before they can be perceived, let alone
appreciated, but it seems more than that, and i wondered if it might not have
something to do with the tunings.
speaking of TTT, i have yet to see anyone go beserk over the cut "keep in
touch". this is the most beautiful love song i think joni has ever written!
passionate and articulate and eloquent. who is this donald guy that he
inspires such impassioned lyrics? and is any of his music available on cd?
the song is in a league with jericho from DJRD - it is gorgeous and i am
knocked out by it. also in love with "love puts on a new face". for those of
you who have not yet heard the cd, hang in there. it is coming soon and it is
worth the wait. if at first, you don't respond....
love ric, who is looking forward to saturday in new yawk!!!!!!

Subject: NJC - Women's History Month
Hello friends.....
The enclosed Maya Angelou poem is being circulated to
celebrate Women's History Month. I just wanted to share it
with you all.
Phenomenal Woman
by Maya Angelou
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies
I'm not cute or built to suit a model's fashion size But when I start
to tell them
They think I'm telling lies.
I say
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips
The stride of my steps
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.
I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please
And to a man
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees
Then they swarm around me
A hive of honey bees.
I say
It's the fire in my eyes
And the flash of my teeth
The swing of my waist
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.
Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say
It's in the arch of my back
The sun of my smile
The ride of my breasts
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.
Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say
It's in the click of my heels
The bend of my hair
The palm of my hand
The need for my care.
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

Wouldn't this kill some of the spontaneity? I don't play an instrument
but I love to sing and I would be very intimidated if things get too
structured or polished. After hearing all the wonderful stories about
Boston & Pittsburgh one of the things I'm hoping will happen in Colorado
is some kick-back & sing-along kinda fun. I appreciate the need for a
structure but I would hope we keep some spontaneity & fun in the mix.

Dear listers,
After reading the recent comments on whether or not to bring children to
ColoradoFest I have to offer my services as part-time childcare provider
for those who wish to make this a family event. I am a licensed intensive
foster care specialist and elementary computer education teacher. I have
worked with children of all kinds, and not just in the eight to three
setting. I would love to spend time getting to know lister's children!
Having the ColoradoFest be a family event is really something good to
consider. For one thing I feel it is in Joni's best interest to have her
music live on through our children. The other is that my husband has
driven me to both Pittsburgh and the Garden. In PGH he was banished due to
lack of space. At the Garden he was welcomed and is now featured by the
"Woodstockmobile" on the JMDL garden page. He loved meeting all of the
listers and realized that my so-called obsession with Joni just might be
legitimate.
If we give our SOs and children a chance to participate in this wonderful
event, they might understand why we spend so much time in front of the
"box". We can still be allowed to enjoy our fellowship, but will have the
luxury of sharing it with family. I am planning on being there with the
whole fam-damily, and hope that other listers will feel the same.

Perhaps on the back of the map there could simply be listed each member

What better way to remain true to the spirit of creativity and the

surround yourself with children.

I think you are hitting on the reason why Joni's music tends to not immediately
grab one and takes many listens to "get" it. She not only does it to us with
the alternative tunings, but also, in her later and recent work, with the
layers of unique syncopation and tempo rubato (irregular time) running
throughout each song. No, she certainly does not follow the standard formula.
Some, at a loss for an accurate description, call her musical evolution "jazzy"
because her music has many of those elements, but this is still inaccurate.
She is completely a genre onto herself and a true original.
I always thought Joni was brilliant but over 20 years ago, when the music
itself became more and more unique, I accepted it as fact that she will always
be way ahead of her time.

Beautiful sentiment, Claud! I keep having these visions of us teaching the

singing ... passing Joni's music along to our friends' wonderful children, to

I love maps and my first high school job was working for Rand McNally. I like
the idea but also somehow feel it is not entirely aesthetic enough for our
Joni. I'm having these visions of super jumbo red dots for the major metro
areas like New York and L.A. (and maybe Melbourne at the rate we're going!).
But it seems like it could come across a bit too much like a sterile corporate
briefing chart. Maybe if the world map was an original painting ? I
like Kate's idea of each sending a personalized postcard or photo to be
compiled in an album. Even if Joni didn't take the time to read every single
card, it would be visually interesting to her and more personalized than just
the map. We could still incorporate the map idea as a front cover for the
album.

If the map was digital rather than printed each "pin" could be a link to
each well-wisher's personal page. This format can do it all, images, video,
sound, the written word. This after all is a cyber-community. I know, I
know... Joni says she doesn't have a computer. So, we buy her one.
Pre-load the inter-active birthday "card"...plug it in and voila. Maybe
while we're at it we throw in an internet connection and subscription to the
JMDL?
