Whatever is decided for the birthday card, I'm in. To Claud, don't do it, don't wast your money on cable unless you feel you realy have to have it. Everything is DOB these days (depending on back) in fact I was looking at one of my X-Rays recently and it looks like an ad for Ace Hardware. I'm inclined to agree about CMIAR, which I would probably put on my B list, along with WTRF, which kind of rules out the Eighties, apart from the excellent DED, yes? I think something must have happened to Joni at the end of the decade, to inspire her to come out with NRH and TI, and not to slip into comfortable middle age, Chris de Burgh-ville, hot chocolate and cosy slippers music. Phil NP: 10,000 Maniacs - In My Tribe ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Sep 1998 06:47:48 -0700 From: Mark or Travis Subject: New hall for Seattle Symphony - SJC Saturday night Seattle inaugurated the brand new Benaroya Hall, the new home of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. The performance was televised on the local PBS station and simulcast on FM radio. Benaroya Hall is being touted as a state of the art hall with incredibly good acoustics. It has gotten raves from the local press since Saturday's opening. Saturday's program opened with a new piece commissioned especially for the event by a composer by the name of Diamond, I believe (and, no, I'm NOT talking about NEIL Diamond) and included a performance of Stravinsky's 'Firebird Suite'. The climax, however, came at the end of the concert. In the 70's & 80's the Seattle Opera used to perform the entire Wagner 'Ring' cycle of operas every year. So the final piece of the program was selections from 'Gotterdammerung'. The dramatic high point of the evening was when guest artist Jessye Norman entered the stage and moved with stately grace and dignity to the soloist's position next to the podium to perform Brunhilda's immolation. Her presence was incredibly beautiful and powerful and her singing was like a force of Nature. I'm not an opera buff but I was very moved. Now for the Joni content. Joni has cited Stravinsky as an influence and although I've heard 'Rites of Spring' every time I've seen 'Fantasia' I never thought of it in relation to Joni's music. But listening to 'Firebird Suite' Saturday night (in the comfort of my living room - no way I could afford $250-$350 dollars to attend) I started thinking about it and I thought I could see some connection. Maybe it's in the way she weaves various solo instruments into her musical tapestries as in 'Down to You'. It seemed that 'Firebird' used a lot of solos, individual voices making the musical statements rather than a whole section or orchestra. Of course the end of the piece uses the whole orchestra and is so grand and impressive. I'm not a musician so I'm struggling here. Would anyone else care to elaborate on this? I'm not comfortable saying too much about something I don't know that much about. Hello everyone, Are you sad, because you had to miss the New England Labor Day weekend Jonifest? Or, are you lamenting that you were there, but your memory of exactly what happened is hazy, for one reason or another? ;-) You can now bring the Boston party to the comfort of your own home! The video is ready! From introductions and corn chowder, to the 1:30AM party percussion parade, the video is about 1 3/4 hours long, and includes Chuck playing the dulcimer on "A Case of You", and his now famous rendition of "Rainy Night House", Michael Paz playing such greats as "People's Parties", and "Down to You", Pearl with her sweet "Marcie", and David with "Woman of Heart and Mind." You can study Marian's guitar playing, with close ups of some of the fingerings on "Night Ride Home", "Just Like This Train", and "Moon at the Window". Of course, there is also the much talked about renditions of "Conversation" by Claud(ia), and Bryan Thomas' "Little Green." There are many more songs and other adventures as well, joined in by John, Heather, Katie, Maggie, Ric, Patrick, Julie, Cindy, Kakki, Marsha, Michael Y., Jim, the Chilis, and yours truly. Also included, for no extra charge, shots of the ceiling, ground, and sky, as guest videographers were getting used to the camera, and Pippin (the whiny dog) running through most of the footage. (A real "home movie" in every sense of the word!) My only regret is that when Marian started playing the introduction to "Cotton Avenue," all I could do was to stand there with my mouth agape, in complete awe, and didn't think of getting it on video until the singing started. (Of course, if Marian would be willing to fly back from Austria for the weekend, I would be glad to have a second chance at this!) All in all, it's a lot of fun, and (I think) will make you feel like you were here, even if you couldn't make it. If you are interested in the video, please send $10, which includes postage, to : Ashara Stansfield P.O. Box 215 Topsfield, MA 01983 Also, if you can include a mailing label with your name and address on it in the envelope, it would make it easier for me. Unfortunately for those with a different video format, I only have the capabilities to dub onto a VHS tape. (Sorry!) BTW, this is NOT a money-making venture. Because of the amount of dubbing I have been doing for the video trees, I had to get my machines cleaned again before I could start this project. Thanks! Certainly we have enough time to figure out and organize whatever is needed to keep everyone entertained. There might be times during the weekend when it would be good to provide the kids a "space of their own" to maximize their enjoyment and minimize the adults' "distraction." Space and entertainment, of course, should be geared to the age level of the children in attendance. So perhaps it would be a good idea to find out who might be bringing how many children, and the kids' ages? Favorite things they like to do? I think the birthday globe idea is the best so far. Think of it from Joni's point of view...for her it's ONLY her birthday (admit it they are often a bit of a non event) and a couple of hundred birthday cards aren't really the sort of thing (IMO) that would mean a great deal to Joni, or anyone in that sort of situation....ANYWAY, I found the giant card a bit silly too, I mean what on earth is Joni going to do with a six foot card once she's read it all? It would be fairly cumbersome (good word!) ANYWAY, my preference lies with the globe idea, although maybe not a globe, but a map? (ooh it would be like in Refuge of the roads with the moon map...and me the least of all) At least this way Joni gets all our appreciation in one hit and she also gets to see how far her fans stretch out to! On my first attempt, last friday, the dj was intrigued enough to venture to their new arrival bins, but wound up playing "Borderline" from TI because he couldn't find TTT in the studio. I phoned him back to thank him for playing this song, and we had a nice little chat about jm's forthcoming release. He suggested checking back on Monday (today) since it is the day he said they receive most of their releases from record companies. The dj I spoke with today was happy to learn that there was a new jm release, and promised to check-it-out and play something. A short while later, the strains of "Sunny Sunday" filled the air. Again, the dj indicated that she had been unable to find TTT, and so substituted this cut from TI instead. She then went to give-away some movie passes and inadvertently cued "Sunny Sunday" again. Mercifully, she let it play all the way through, and even let TI continue for the duration of "Magdalene Launderies" while she apparently worked her way through a group of movie give-away callers! What a rare treat... a jm triple play on the airwaves of an upstate NY station during prime time! Rest assured I'll be trying again tomorrow with another dj to bring TTT to the fore of the local airwaves -- a labor of love indeed. Date: Sun, 15 Sep 2013 13:50:19 +1000 From: Evan + Vanessa Thomson Admittedly I'm behind on all that's going on but this idea of celebrating Joni's birthday does interest me... There have been some wonderful suggestions and I do like the idea of donating to a cause; but as Michael Y. pointed out, not all of us are as financial as we'd like to be and being Aussie and our dollar so low, theoretically I and other OzJmdlers would have to contribute 'more' to equal the others. I too am feeling somewhat 'pinched' and would welcome perhaps a 'more' affordable demonstration of our regard for Joni. I was thinking perhaps would could make a 'book' of sorts with stories, poems, letters, pictures, quotes etc individually chronicling our 'love' of Joni and her music. Limit the size (like an A4 page per person or smaller), set guidelines etc. We could even perhaps design a Vinyl or C.D. cover with a cover of individual JMDL members and best thread quotes on the sleeve and signatures. Would you have an actual C.D. or L.P inside? Not necessarily, it could be a mock up of one of her albums or a greatest hits album as voted by us etc or songs we would like her to cover etc. The possibilities are endless and it ties in her as a musician and the impact she's made on our lives. Even a 'video' message with spots of everyone (if possible) limited to 30 seconds of birthday greetings, so she sees the faces behind the names and makes us people and not just 'numbers' or 'fans'. This I know may not be possible but it is 'only' an idea. So, let's keep this in perspective and remember that we all 'love' Joni in our own ways and to try and work together. Vanessa. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Sep 1998 00:44:54 EDT From: TerryM2442@aol.com Subject: Re: Colorado kids (NJC) In a message dated 9/14/98 10:48:43 PM Eastern Daylight Time, h.gill@ugrad.unimelb.edu.au writes: << f someone wants to pay my airfare ;-) then I will heartily volunteer to play with the kids till the cows come home! >> That is VERY tempting!
