There was a great article about Gram in Mojo a few issues ago, and another in the Guardian (only vaguely left-leaning national newspaper in Britain) today. It wasn't the thrill of finding a vinyl copy in a second hand shop, but finding that it's been issued as a single CD at "Nice Price" was good enough for me. You are obviously reffering to several of my posts when I was hoping to attend Woodstock, which I was unable to attend. If you review those posts you will see that I was coming with the cash and intention of buying a ticket at whatever price I could find, first, and "gate crashing" (your words, not mine as far as I remeber) as a last resort. IAnyone who knows me will inform you that I am far from a "cheapskate". Also, I thought this list was, for the most part, above name calling. Was my suggestion of doing some good in Joni's name so threatening to warrant this attack? >Marsha, laughing hard at the thought of listers >agreeing on       a "cause", much less shelling >out bucks for it. The other list I refferred to in my original post was the 2400Fulton list which discusses Jefferson Airplane/Starship & Hot Tuna. If anyone here is on that list they will verify that upwards od 80% of the postings there consist of heated flame wars both on & off topic. It would seem to the new subscriber that "everyone hates everyone" on that list. And yet, when someone made the suggestion of sending a kid to Jorma Kaukonen's new music camp, Fur Peace Ranch www.furpeaceranch.com , on a 2400Fulton Scholarship, over $300 was raised and that was matched by a sympathetic business of a list member. One person contacted the camp directors and a mailing address was set up for listers to mail there $5 donation. In short, a group of people who bicker & argue MUCH MUCH MUCH more than the people on this list, made a real difference, and it wasn't even anybody's birthday. I believe this list CAN agree on a cause by selecting a cause that Joni is MOST interested in. From there, one person can contact that organization and set up a JMDL contribution address at the agreed organization, then post it, for all to donate, or not, as they see fit. The organization will then provide the total collected by a set date so that this info can be relayed to Joni with her card. This "cheapskate" will volunteer the first $5 to whatever cause Joni supports, once determined, and will volunteer to do the contact work, although I have never done that sort of thing before and there are probably others on this list better prepared and knowlegeable to do so. Once again I ask if anyone knows what cause or causes are most dear to Joni. That is the first step. I belong to 6 lists, and this one, by far, is where people are, for the most part, the most intelligent, civil, & friendly. Or is that just within a certain clique? I can not believe the amount of negativity being sent my way on this subject. I thought this list would jump on such an idea and that Joni would be moved to tears by the result. gdave NP: Tape of the Day - 9/13/69 CSNY: Big Sur, Monterey, CA. - ----------------------------------------------------------------- DaveBase @ http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Stage/2349/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 11:50:03 -0400 From: Michael Yarbrough Subject: RE: Birthday Card Dave wrote: <<>> Well, I'll try to voice my concerns without being too negative. I know that there are several younger ones like myself on the list, and we may not really be able to contribute cash to this birthday project. The list is mercifully free of charge, but between tape trees, JMDL fests, CD releases, etc. there is certainly plenty of opportunity to spend money. And as much as I love Joan, I have a hard enough time finding the money to support my own organizations of choice--my NOW membership renewal sits on my mantle as we speak because I can't afford to send it off. I'm still trying to put together the $25 deposit for the CO fest. If we decided to only do a simple card and a donation, I could probably scrounge up $5 somewhere to send in, but it's just an added financial burden when I'm spending close to $1000 a month on debt incurred from putting myself through a very expensive private university, with which I'm not even done. I'd rather not have to spend a dime if it's at all possible. I'm sure the other younger members, and probably some of the older members, are in the same situation. I'm not necessarily suggesting we forgo the donation idea, but that there be another way (like the original picture idea, which I don't find self-indulgent in the least) for all of us to participate. - --Michael ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 17:07:59 +0100 From: catman Subject: TTT & Bev Having listened to this album many times now I have to say i personally am disappointed. The dynamics of this group changed dramatically during the past year because of the gatherings, brought on by Julie's and Ashara's parties and the concerts, etc. Those who were not able to or chose not to participate may not get it, but THAT IMHO is what has occurred and while Joni may have gotten some feeling about it and some individual comments at the concerts, I don't think she yet understands the full impact of it. I certainly don't want to alienate those listers who did not participate, but I was involved in only one of those gatherings and still haven't seen her in concert since 1975, but I felt it and want to transmit that feeling to Joni as best we can. I used to peruse the 2400 Fulton list until the Joni list alone became more than enough to read in a day. I'm curious to know - What was Jorma's reaction to the contribution? Did he post a message to the web site/list acknowledging the gift? Are the 2400 Fulton listmembers going to make this an annual event? Maybe we could set up an annual type of group contribution to a cause close to Joni in which anyone who wants to can participate. We've learned through articles and such that she likes to give her time to children's music programs in Saskatoon and Alberta. Her boyfriend Don Freed also spends much time with children's music groups in schools. But I'm still inclined to think that this should be an effort separate from the annual group birthday card. A birthday effort focused only on contributing money would be exclusionary to many members for reasons already explained by Michael. Also, what are the problems associated with money conversion with donations coming in from around the worldwide membership here? There could be some inherent logisitical problems because of that. I would assume that the 2400 Fulton contributors were mainly from the U.S. and were sending in dollars to Jorma's camp in the U.S. Kakki I can not believe the amount of negativity being sent my way on this subject. What we did was choose our own postcards which represented where we live, since we were a pretty far-flung group, and the person who put the album together got clear plastic pages that had six compartments each, so that each postcard had its own slot (and they wouldn't all slide into each other), and they all could be viewed front and back without removing them from the sleeves, but they could also be taken out for a closer look. Of course, we had to adhere to size limitations so that they could fit into the individual compartments, and the idea of choosing the state/country we lived in was part of the voted-on parameters, although they need not be here. We could indeed choose to send a photo of ourself at our favorite Joni-gathering, or simply a self-portrait photo, or portrait of Joni (for those with that gift), etc. Other than having them mailed to a designated person by our deadline, anything went. Also included in the album were some other items such as writings (we could include some interesting digest threads, for example), etc. Anyway, the person who received this liked it a lot, understood that people from all over were involved, and it was a compact yet chock-full "card" which included a lot of messages from a lot of people, but it was packaged so that it didn't seem overwhelming. And the preson in the group who actually assembled the album got to (tastefully!) decorate the cover! I thought I would pass this along in case this is the route we go for Joni's upcoming card. I thought it would be more of a scholarly get together. I'd like to have a collection of folks who really love Joni's music and want to learn more about it and her. I visualized listening to and discussing rare songs and watching videos, as well as having seminars where guitarists could demonstrate Joni's tunings and strumming styles, etc. Children are a constant distraction and it's understandable when they're forced to go to events that mean nothing to them. I don't even know whether significant others should attend, unless they are Joniphiles, of course. But perhaps this is not what others had in mind? Is something purely social preferred? Joni sings two Gershwin tunes on the CD- "The Man I Love" and "Summertime." Her voice is smoky, sensual and quite lovely singing these standards. (Recently in live performance, Joni has also performed a couple of other pop classics: "Stormy Weather" and "Comes Love.") Stevie Wonder adds his harmonica work to "Summertime" and Wayne Shorter joins in on saxophone. Stevie also contributes vocals on one song on the album. Other guests contributing to Herbie's new CD are Chick Correa, Kathleen Battle, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and more. How about the two most recent albums by The David Nelson Band: "Limited Edition" and "Keeper Of The Key" David Nelson has enjoyed a distinguished musical career since he first performed with Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter in The Wildwood Boys in the early 60's. Currently, David is riding high on the music scene with his latest musical endeavor, The David Nelson Band. For the past three years DNB has been performing coast to coast and garnering critical acclaim for their recordings and their live performances. David has assembled a superb musical unit and turned them loose on exciting and evocative new tunes, many with lyrics penned by Grateful Dead lyricist, Robert Hunter. David Nelson was an important figure in the musical vanguard of the influential Haight-Ashbury/San Fransisco music scene of the 60's and 70's. He played guitar on three landmark Grateful Dead albums and, together with Jerry Garcia and John Dawson, formed the first psychedelic country rock'n'roll band, The New Riders Of The Purple Sage. In the mid-80's he was a member of The Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band. DNB features a line-up of noteworthy and talented musicians. Prior to the formation of DNB, guitarist / pedal steel player Barry Sless honed his skills in Cowboy Jazz and Kingfish. Keyboard ace Mookie Siegel is a well known figure on the music scene, notably with Kingfish and Ratdog. The solid and experienced rhythm section consists of Bill Laymon (ex-NRPS, Jefferson Starship, Kingfish and JGB) and Arthur Steinhorn (ex-NRPS, Kingfish and Cowboy Jazz). I'd rather us try to figure out a way to deal with the kids to help eliminate obstructions to folks' attendance. I mean, after all, this is a YMCA camping place, near the forest, with some obstacle course-type stuff around, etc. It seems a natural environment for kids to have fun. Perhaps one of the parents attending would like to take a committee spot for kid-planning? Just a suggestion. <<>> Again, I'd rather JMDLers attend than not, and if they cannot justify the expense without bringing an SO along, I say bring him/her/it! <<>> I don't believe in purity!! I think the beauty of this weekend is that there will finally be enough time to fit in all sorts of activity, ranging from Joni Mitchell dissertation salons to hiking and sleeping and hanging out. I guess I sort of assumed there would be social AND academic activities and I'm thrilled about my assumption; sorry if it's wrong! :-) But if we're voting, I say mix it up! One small concern I do have is that the YMCA place is a Christian organization that hosts church camps and stuff. Now, as many, many, many JMDLers have proven, many, many, many religious people are very warm, caring, tolerant, wonderful human beings. (Did I mention just how many there were? And how warm and caring? I'm being serious, I just don't want to be misinterpreted and offend anyone.) But, as we all know, there are a couple of Christian people and organizations in the world who are slightly less warm and tolerant than the rest. So I'm just wondering if there are any rules at the facility of which we should be aware (regarding, say, alcohol consumption, etc.) and whether those of us whom some people find morally abhorrent can expect to treated respectfully. I'm not trying to stir anything up here, just genuinely wondering. - --Michael, who grew up very Christian and not far from Colorado ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 21:07:06 -0500 From: "Julie Z. Is something purely social preferred? Hi Wally, You read my mind about nixxing kids....however, if my memory serves me correctly, the original plans were to have a weekend of Joni **with** family/S.O's---partly why you guys already reserved 100 rooms based on double occupancy. (This all came about on the heels of Jonifest Pittsburgh when there was some grumblings, because it was my decision to have jmdl members **only** as guests in my home---and not their S.O's. This was viewed as pretty radical at the time, but pretty much adopted as the preferred way to do a Jonifest. Why bore anyone else with our fanaticism?) When Jon and I started calculating the prices of the lodging which includes meals: The Alpen Inn is $72 per person double occupancy (or $116 single occupancy) per night and the Mt. Ypsilon Lodge is $58 per person double occupancy (or $$89 single occupancy) per night.  I figured that the whole weekend would cost me alone somewhere around $500 including my flight. So Im coming solo. You and I are in agreement about people, be they big or small, **not** coming to Colorado who aren't into Joni. This is good that we had this discussion, because if anyone else feels passionate about this issue, speak now, or forever hold your peace. (Too bad we can't do Robert's Rules of Order on line. Has it been tried?) I make a motion that Jonifest Colorado does not include children as guests. (Just kidding.) Since I don't have a great idea to contribute myself, I thought I sum up some of my thoughts. Depending on the amount of individual cards that Wally might be delivering (I liked the Santa Claus image! - and maybe Wally might need a sleigh to haul them to Joni) it could be too overwhelming and boring to give each card the attention we might all hope for. But then again I am not a big fan of cards myself, and maybe she would take all day or several weeks to comb through them all feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. I did like the idea of an effort in her name that she might feel strongly about. I guess I am practical deep down and love the idea of an effort having a positive outcome - not that Joni receiving a truckload of cards (see I envision that if we do all individual cards that it wouldn't be just a little baggie full of cards!) would not be positive, but I think you all know what I mean. Maybe her birthday is not the right time and I totally understand that not everyone can spare a dime. I like the idea of showing our location. This might bring home to Joni that this group is not just a bunch of people on the Internet but individuals from all over the world! This might encourage her to tour more and visually understand how far reaching her influence is. Maybe we could send her a globe with little Joni pins placed everywhere where a JMDL member is. I agree with Michael, I think the gathering should be open to all JMDLers and their families. As he (or someone) mentioned, it will be held in a beautiful mountain setting. There will be lots of things Joni and non-Joni for everyone. I envision activities happening all day long. If you want to go to them, you go. If you don't, you go hiking or fishing or rock-climbing or whatever. I think the ability to bring one's family would make it possible for more people to attend.
