You are correct. I would think those photos of gatherings might be more
prominent, if only because the gatherings ARE going to be more meaningful to
Joni, but there should be room for all, without making the thing too unwieldy.

Joni be in the middle of her east coast tour the week of her birthday?

Kyoto is truly a beautiful city, the only place in Japan that was spared
from bombing by the allies in the last world war because of the many shrines
here. Here for work and it is great to receive my jmdl digests every night,
thanks Les. I really regret taking out my CD drive from my laptop to reduce
a couple of pounds. I am really missing DJRD which I usually bring with on
all my trips. Also really miss the new Lauryn Hill album which is the most
exciting thing I have heard since.....DJRD. I am totally mesmerized by this
album, every track of it. In Zion is probably my favorite song right now,
also love her version of Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You, always been a
favorite of mine. I even liked the disco version that came out during the
disco era. The Lauryn CD is number one at the Kyoto Tower store and Doo
Wop is the top single at the local FM station here. I think Spin magazine
underrated the album, it should be a 10, not a 9.
I made a trip to the Virgin and Tower store here in Kyoto and listened to
the whole Lauryn Hill CD on the headset at the Virgin store. To my
surprise, the Japanese release has three hidden tracks, instead of the two
we got in the US. The store manager told me that it is very common for
Japanese releases to include an extra track on the local release to justify
the higher prices than the US version which they also carry. He said the
bonus track is usually a B-side of the single release, a remixed track or a
live track. I sure hope they include a bonus track on TTT for the Japanese
release.
Both Virgin and Tower Kyoto are very well stocked with joni CDs. Virgin has
all her albums except DJRD (what a sin), Tower has all her CDs as well as
the Swedish tribute. Apparently, DJRD is the only joni album that is not
available as a local release in Japan, figure that one out.
I am also very happy to see that Brazilian music is big here, including a
hugh selection of Tropicalia artists at the Virgin store. Tower also has a
big display of a tribute album to Jaco Pastorious, with no contributions
from joni. Has anyone heard this tribute? Looked for the new joni single
but not available here yet.

I like Wally's idea but I would still like there to be something from the
group as a whole so maybe instead of a card from the group we could design
the gift bag that the cards would be delivered in. On that bag we could stick
the group photos and individual photos and have the colorful JMDL with the
heart, like the banner. Inside we could have all the individual cards and
maybe we could all donate a dollar and buy Joni a JMDL Denim shirt which we
could wrap and also put in the bag. Wouldn't it be great to see Joni wearing
that! (Actually she might already have one) Les? Wally?
There would probably be money left over which we could let Les and Wally
fight over :) to go towards the upkeep of there sites.
The only problem I see besides Wally and Les hurting each other is will Joni
have the time to go through possibly a hundred or two individual cards or may
she just consider it fan mail and hand it over to someone else to deal with.
Again maybe Wally could answer that one.

Hi Julius
I was there and it was a truly magical experience. Joni was at her most
jazzy. It was a sunny day and about 72,000 attended. Joni was in great
voice and her on-stage energy and enthusiasm were infectious. One reviewer
said that he was glad Joni did Woodstock as it meant that CSN+Y wouldn't do
it later !

How about something more along the lines of a photo album/scrap book
card? It doesn't have to be elaborate. A card that she could keep
around the house and thumb through if she ever feels the need. We could
include jmdl events and some of her photos(as Kakki mentioned). As for
those of us who haven't been fortunate to attend anything yet, we could
send a b-day greeting or a signiture. Maybe I've been to too many 85th

Hi Mariana-
Thanx for the concert review on Paula. I love the way you write. I
would have loved to go with you to that show. When I was in LA last year
for Namm I saw her at a club called Billboard Live. It was such a tiny
club and I was right up front for most of the show. She is amazing! That
was my first time seeing her. The first time was at Gavin Convention
here in New Orleans when This Fire came out. The WEA rep here told me
about her at dinner one night and that she was playing the next day. I
busted my butt to get there and boy was it worth it. She really knocked
me out. I went directly to Tower and bought This Fire. I didn't find her
first one till after I saw her at House of Blues here last year. I have
been trying to work out a couple of her tunes. Hopefully we can play
some together at the next gathering. I have been told that we have to
get together on some Sarah stuff. I do a bunch of tunes from Fumbling. I
hope to be in LA in January 99 for Namm convention in Anaheim. Kakki and
I already have plans to meet so she can check out the convention. Are
you in? I need to secure passes soon cause they are hard to get. Have a
great week end.

I agree with Ken. Even though most of us haven't been able to make
it to a jonifest or meet each other in person, this list is still an
important part of our lives. I know that I log on with anticipation
that a new digest is waiting for me. If the card focused on just these
gatherings, etc., then I think that some of us would end up feeling left
out and not really a part of the whole project. How about, if we do the
big card idea with the photos, distribute as evenly as possible a ratio
of personal pics of JMDL'ers and the gatherings?

Subject: nietzche on jm & vincent?
Just wanted to pass along one of Nietzche's aphorisms that I happened upon
this morning concerning the true value of an artist. It comes from Book II
of "Joyful Wisdom", and somehow it seems appropo in light of some recent
posts (excerpted below) on the subject matter of TI (both jm's and
vincent's):
"78. What we should be grateful for. --
It is only the artists, and especially the theatrical artists, who have
furnished men with eyes and ears to hear and see with some pleasure what
everyone is in himself, what he experiences and what he aims at: it is only
THEY who have taught us how to estimate the hero that is concealed in each
of these common-place men, and the art of looking at ourselves from a
distance as heroes, and as it were simplified and transfigured, -- the art
of 'putting ourselves on the stage' before ourselves. It is thus only that
we get beyond the paltry details in ourselves! Without that art we should
be nothing but foreground, and would live absolutely under the spell of the
perspective that makes the closest and the commonest seem immensely large
and like reality in itself. -- Perhaps there is merit of a similar kind in
the religion which commanded us to look at the sinfulness of every
individual man with a magnifying-glass, and made a great immortal criminal
of the sinner; in that it put eternal perspectives around man, it taught him
to see himself from a distance, and as something past, something entire."
I remain eternally grateful for that fateful day back in '78 when a friend's
copy of jm's "HOSL" first landed in my lap, and "Harry's House" resonated so
deeply within me. That was to be the first of many episodes in which jm
"mirrored me back simplified." Likewise, I'm truly grateful for that very
special "day in the garden" that jm recently gave us. Though I only joined
the jmdl thereafter, it seems like this is some kind of reunion of long-time
(and long-distance) kindred spirits. Already, I've been blessed with an
unsolicited surprise recording from within this amazing cyber-community --
thank you simon. Hopefully, it won't be too long before we millers get to
one of the jmdl get togethers. The prospect of seeing vincent's work on
jm's birthday with other jmdl folks seems like a major opportunity, though
it falls just a month before the arrival of our first child. Guess time
will tell if it's meant to be. All for now... it's getting late in this
neck of the global woods.

Bottom of page - no picture.
1994's Turbulent Indigo stands among Joni Mitchell's half
dozen very best records. She manifested a toughness
and renewed sense of purpose, as if she'd spent early
middle age coasting. and was now eager to spend her
remaining productive years to their full advantage.
No Apologies, seemingly inspired by the case of the
Japanese girl raped by US troops in Yokohama, is as
freshly disgusted as Indigo's Magdelen Laundries
and in the title song she's not compromising on
"the whining white kids of the record biz". She also
seems impatient in personal affairs. Stay In Touch
could be dedicated to the daughter she's only just met
while Facelift, in which she urges her own mother to
her and her new boyfriend alone, is startlingly candid,
it's crassness sweetened by the almost traditional
Wayne Shorter solo. Harlem in Havana describes the
coming of an old fashioned carnival to her home town,
Man From Mars was originally offered for the
sound track of Grace of My Heart and The Crazy Cries
Of Love has lyrics largely contributed by new boyfriend
Don Freed. In that one respect Joni Mitchell likes to
stick to her well established traditions.

My review of Mojo: A slightly dull mag, picks up on new
stuff about a year after everyone else. Good retro pieces.

While I wouldn't use the word cheesy, I agree with the Jane reviewer
that *some* of the TTT lyrics are among the most flawed Joni's written
in a while. Admittedly, her lyrics are held to a higher standard by
myself and most others I know, but nonetheless I find the title track
to be unfocused and the infamous "b-h" line to call far too much
attention to itself. I still hold these opinions even after a couple of
naysayers tried to disabuse me of them in Boston. And I certainly
don't think someone who has them is self-evidently unqualified to
review a Joni record.
And as for Wayne Shorter, while it's not really his fault, what the hell
is he doing on "Lead Balloon"? Bad, bad choice IMO. I do think his
work on "Harlem" and "Facelift" is among the best I've heard on a
Joni record, though.

So the radio stations will have the track on Tuesday. Triple-A stands for,
I believe, adult album alternative. So the station in your area that plays the
same Bonnie Raitt, Melissa Etheridge, and Barenaked Ladies songs over

NPR. The adult contemporary radio market will have to respond to bring
"Crazy Cries" onto the airplay charts, so make sure to get in your requests.

Subject: Colorado Questions For Deposits
To The Board of Directors of Jonifest Colorado (Wally, Les, Leslie,
MaryGrace, Happy The Man Craig etc):
Although Jonifest Colorado is almost a year away, some of us have to start
financially planning ahead of time. Since this has been talked up as a
"Weekend in the Garden" for family and Significant Others--- my husband and
I have decided that it's time to unveil our most creative contributions to
the world: our young "Webblings" for all of you to experiene -----and this
includes my hellion twin boys. But hey, my kids love to dance and **do**
take chances.....so therefore, I have safety issues among many other
details to consider in preparing for ColoradoJonifest 99.
My first question is: will this event be open to **all** Joni Mitchell
fans or cyber "card-carrying" members of the Joni Mitchell Discussion List?
Obviously, limiting this event to members of the Joni Mitchell Discussion
List has definate advantages. Are we really interested in the zoo-factor
of opening the party up to Ms. Mitchell's entire fanship?....plus who among
you has the money or time to mastermind such an event that would involve
even a fraction of the world's Joni fans?
When will there be a vote/poll from the membership as to how the weekend
will be organized? I began, in my head, to strategize the expense and
**work** involved in hosting a "festival" in a public-for-profit Mountain
Inn, rather than someone's home, and I need more detailed information
before I send my deposit in for five family members: two rooms (no doubt:
not grey, but overlooking gorgeous mountains. ;~D) On the Coloradofest
web site: "info-jonifest1999@jmdl.com" plans say that " We have a wide
variety of activities planned from opening parties to concerts to workshops
and more. The surrounding area is full of possibilities as well with the
gorgeous Rocky Mountains and all that nature stuff. To say nothing of a
multitude of Joni-related activities yet to be determined. Our vision is
clear to create the start of an annual musical weekend of incredible
quality, learning, networking, partying and more. "
Now that all sounds fabulous in theory, but I fear hearing six months from
now that we 'Colo-festival Depositeers' will be asked to find a way to
raise a couple thousand dollars for hidden costs not considered. And yes
yes, please know that Id like to be the first to step in line in getting
involved in the planning...but not financially donating lots of money. I
am very excited about doing whatever I can to help make this event a dream
come true.
After hosting my own Jonifest Pittsburgh and attending Ashara's New
England Jonifest, and witnessing the enormous ammount of labor that goes
into merely setting up a sound stage alone is a lot to consider. (Me, who
is strrong like bull, tried lifting one of ChuckE's amps----and discovered
it was impossible for a person to lift alone.) Getting it all (karaoke,
amps, mikes etc) to a mountain resort would be expensive and time
consuming. Who is in charge of the music technical details-----which is
very very important? How soon will THEY be able to set up before the
festival-party-people get there? How much set-up work will we,
Festivalites (or our muscular S.O.'s), be expected to undertake? Geeze, I
have so many questions: Will we be able to have the party music/dance hall
till dawn or are might we have to be out of "there" as early as midnight?
If every detail is not checked out or managed, we can easily end up jamming
in individual hotel bedrooms...and in that case, we might as well be in
Podunk, Ohio.
What if some of us jmdlers can only afford one night of lodging and two
days of fun? Are we able to do this? And if we are, Id want to know the
itinerary for which day to choose, so that I don't miss a certain workshop
or jam session.
JMDLERS have to be assigned and accountable as committees chairheads for
this to keep from being a pipe dream that people end up losing money
on----and that's the information I feel that's needed to get the numbers of
attendees we need. I see that Mary Grace is the jmdl accountant, but who
has taken on the lead as being primarly responsible for this event? I
think it's important to consider that this event is not unlike a big
wedding reception or conference and these details need to be worked out and
yes, slaved over, a year in advance, or we will discover that the hotel
will not be able to accomodate our ambitious needs. (The package includes a
"meeting place." How big is that space? Do we have the biggest "meeting
place" reserved? Where will all of the Joni-workshops and Joni-related
activities take place?--or will we have to stop and start the music
performances/karaoke singalongs in the meeting place to accomodate the
workshop instructors?) Outdoor music activities---great, but---what if the
weather is bad? Do we have full run of the whole Inn? What are the
restrictions of being a guest of the Inn? Is there a bar, for instance or
can we bring in our own alcohal or do we have to pay by the drink for
alcohal and soda? What do the meals run considering people will be eating
three meals out a day---which can total 9 meals in one weekend?)
In organizing jmdl guests at our home, Ashara, Kakki and I provided lots
of extras that will have to be purchased at the Inn in Colorado. There is
a lot to consider....
It's going to be a financial undertaking to consider even if one person
attends.
And the only reason why I submit this post at this time was because of
the new round of encouragement to send in our deposits for Jonifest Colordo
99.
- Julie Z. Webb, what can I say, Im a little anal retentive,
hyper-organized, overly cost-conscious, and experienced with running group
retreats involving famililies from various financial backgrounds----where
comfort, safety and extreme fun are paramount considerations.

I like Wally am really busy now. I am currently working on a civil suit and
naming the following persons to try and recoup some $40,000,000.00 spent on
the Monica Fest 1998, Bill, Ken, Monica, Betty, Jennifer, Paula, Secret
Service, Al Gore (he will have to make sure that Estes Park is in good
condition when we get there) along with others that I will be suing their
ass off.
The money then will be used to purchase 1,000,000.00 copies and then send
them to all newspeople in the world who have been covering this escaped so
maybe they will get some culture in there rather (not in as Dan) dreary
non-entity world.
As for JoniFest 99 as soon as finish with Turning Point 1998 at the Austin
Convention Center, which I am currently working on and hoping that the 5000
or so high school students who attend will enjoy, I will hope to give more
time to JoniFest, like answer questions.
Come on folks all you need is a pickup and a tent to attend.
Peace, Craig
PS: If you are interested in being involved in the civil suit then email me

For you, of all people Wally, of course Colorado can wait. I hadn't known

Anyway, it's been my experience that good committee planning is designed

Don't think so, Wally, because after September 29 we'll be
all wrapped up in discussing the minutiae of TTT down to

not to mention all the Joni touring we'll be traveling to.

Subject: Birthday Card
I was not around for last year's card but it seems to me that although I
have read some very good ideas, I'd like to add another.
A card/gift containing pics of some of us who have gathered seems at
once both somewhat self-indulgent (or in this case group-indulgent) and,
as someone else pointed out, exclusionary of the majority(?) of list
members who have not met or been photographed.
And if I read correctly that someone suggested a bilboard, while it
would garner publicity, bilboards are, IMO, just plain ugly. "Paved
paradise..." anyone?
What I think would be great would be to select some favorite cause of
Joni's and support it in some way in her name, while sending her a very
simple card wishing her well and informing her of whatever action is
taken.
On another list, a number of people donated $5 each, and the total was
matched by a sympathetic corperation, and this was applied to a youth
scholarship to a music camp.
I'm not saying this is what we should do but it is an example of how a
list like this can do some real good and make a difference without
costing much to each individual.
Also, everyone thusly is included who CHOOSES to be so.
OUCH! How's that last line for grammer?
Just a suggestion,
gdave

I'm sorry to hear you think that group pics of us are self-indulgent. I think
our sentiment is to show her how much she has influenced and meant to us, to
the extent that we, who were initially strangers to each other, would travel
many miles to meet "in her name" so to speak. And there is no suggestion to
exclude anyone else's photos - that would be gross!
I do love and heartily endorse your idea of contributing to an appropriate
cause, in addition to sending her a card/cards. I think that would be stellar.
