Here for work and it is great to receive my jmdl digests every night, thanks Les. I really regret taking out my CD drive from my laptop to reduce a couple of pounds. I am really missing DJRD which I usually bring with on all my trips. Also really miss the new Lauryn Hill album which is the most exciting thing I have heard since.....DJRD. I am totally mesmerized by this album, every track of it. In Zion is probably my favorite song right now, also love her version of Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You, always been a favorite of mine. I even liked the disco version that came out during the disco era. The Lauryn CD is number one at the Kyoto Tower store and Doo Wop is the top single at the local FM station here. I think Spin magazine underrated the album, it should be a 10, not a 9. I made a trip to the Virgin and Tower store here in Kyoto and listened to the whole Lauryn Hill CD on the headset at the Virgin store. To my surprise, the Japanese release has three hidden tracks, instead of the two we got in the US. The store manager told me that it is very common for Japanese releases to include an extra track on the local release to justify the higher prices than the US version which they also carry. He said the bonus track is usually a B-side of the single release, a remixed track or a live track. I sure hope they include a bonus track on TTT for the Japanese release. Both Virgin and Tower Kyoto are very well stocked with joni CDs. Virgin has all her albums except DJRD (what a sin), Tower has all her CDs as well as the Swedish tribute. Apparently, DJRD is the only joni album that is not available as a local release in Japan, figure that one out. I am also very happy to see that Brazilian music is big here, including a hugh selection of Tropicalia artists at the Virgin store. Tower also has a big display of a tribute album to Jaco Pastorious, with no contributions from joni. Has anyone heard this tribute? Looked for the new joni single but not available here yet. On that bag we could stick the group photos and individual photos and have the colorful JMDL with the heart, like the banner. Inside we could have all the individual cards and maybe we could all donate a dollar and buy Joni a JMDL Denim shirt which we could wrap and also put in the bag. Wouldn't it be great to see Joni wearing that! (Actually she might already have one) Les? Wally? There would probably be money left over which we could let Les and Wally fight over :) to go towards the upkeep of there sites. The only problem I see besides Wally and Les hurting each other is will Joni have the time to go through possibly a hundred or two individual cards or may she just consider it fan mail and hand it over to someone else to deal with. I love the way you write. I would have loved to go with you to that show. When I was in LA last year for Namm I saw her at a club called Billboard Live. It was such a tiny club and I was right up front for most of the show. She is amazing! That was my first time seeing her. The first time was at Gavin Convention here in New Orleans when This Fire came out. The WEA rep here told me about her at dinner one night and that she was playing the next day. I busted my butt to get there and boy was it worth it. She really knocked me out. I went directly to Tower and bought This Fire. I didn't find her first one till after I saw her at House of Blues here last year. I have been trying to work out a couple of her tunes. Hopefully we can play some together at the next gathering. I have been told that we have to get together on some Sarah stuff. I do a bunch of tunes from Fumbling. I hope to be in LA in January 99 for Namm convention in Anaheim. I agree with Ken. Even though most of us haven't been able to make it to a jonifest or meet each other in person, this list is still an important part of our lives. I know that I log on with anticipation that a new digest is waiting for me. If the card focused on just these gatherings, etc., then I think that some of us would end up feeling left out and not really a part of the whole project. How about, if we do the big card idea with the photos, distribute as evenly as possible a ratio of personal pics of JMDL'ers and the gatherings? Cheers, Evian - ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Sep 1998 02:26:11 -0400 (EDT) From: some millers Subject: nietzche on jm & vincent? Just wanted to pass along one of Nietzche's aphorisms that I happened upon this morning concerning the true value of an artist. It comes from Book II of "Joyful Wisdom", and somehow it seems appropo in light of some recent posts (excerpted below) on the subject matter of TI (both jm's and vincent's): "78. What we should be grateful for. -- It is only the artists, and especially the theatrical artists, who have furnished men with eyes and ears to hear and see with some pleasure what everyone is in himself, what he experiences and what he aims at: it is only THEY who have taught us how to estimate the hero that is concealed in each of these common-place men, and the art of looking at ourselves from a distance as heroes, and as it were simplified and transfigured, -- the art of 'putting ourselves on the stage' before ourselves. It is thus only that we get beyond the paltry details in ourselves! Without that art we should be nothing but foreground, and would live absolutely under the spell of the perspective that makes the closest and the commonest seem immensely large and like reality in itself. -- Perhaps there is merit of a similar kind in the religion which commanded us to look at the sinfulness of every individual man with a magnifying-glass, and made a great immortal criminal of the sinner; in that it put eternal perspectives around man, it taught him to see himself from a distance, and as something past, something entire." I remain eternally grateful for that fateful day back in '78 when a friend's copy of jm's "HOSL" first landed in my lap, and "Harry's House" resonated so deeply within me. That was to be the first of many episodes in which jm "mirrored me back simplified." Likewise, I'm truly grateful for that very special "day in the garden" that jm recently gave us. Though I only joined the jmdl thereafter, it seems like this is some kind of reunion of long-time (and long-distance) kindred spirits. Already, I've been blessed with an unsolicited surprise recording from within this amazing cyber-community -- thank you simon. Hopefully, it won't be too long before we millers get to one of the jmdl get togethers. The prospect of seeing vincent's work on jm's birthday with other jmdl folks seems like a major opportunity, though it falls just a month before the arrival of our first child. Guess time will tell if it's meant to be. All for now... it's getting late in this neck of the global woods. Buenos noches- Paul (slouching to bed in S. She manifested a toughness and renewed sense of purpose, as if she'd spent early middle age coasting. and was now eager to spend her remaining productive years to their full advantage. No Apologies, seemingly inspired by the case of the Japanese girl raped by US troops in Yokohama, is as freshly disgusted as Indigo's Magdelen Laundries and in the title song she's not compromising on "the whining white kids of the record biz". She also seems impatient in personal affairs. Stay In Touch could be dedicated to the daughter she's only just met while Facelift, in which she urges her own mother to her and her new boyfriend alone, is startlingly candid, it's crassness sweetened by the almost traditional Wayne Shorter solo. Harlem in Havana describes the coming of an old fashioned carnival to her home town, Man From Mars was originally offered for the sound track of Grace of My Heart and The Crazy Cries Of Love has lyrics largely contributed by new boyfriend Don Freed. In that one respect Joni Mitchell likes to stick to her well established traditions. - - David Hepworth Note from me: The August issue is still available for 6.00 pounds phone england1858435341 or fax 1858434958 with credit card.
