Subject: re: lost Hejira and more (long, JC)
Dear PJ,
Thank you once again for a deeply insightful and thought-provoking post!
I will never hear those lyrics from Black Crow again without thinking about
your homeless friend.
Same thing with "Not to Blame" - the song itself is not depressing (it is
poignant), but it asks the listener to contemplate something that is
horrible and ugly, something that we routinely ignore (as a society...and
as individuals, God help us all!).
To my ears, Joni has, once or twice, asked us to go beyond the music and
into the words (one of the many reasons I regret not being at the
NEJonifest is that I didn't get to hear Claud's version of "Conversation,"
one of the saddest songs I've ever heard....)
Turbulent Indigo doesn't make me happy, I can't help it! All of it moves
me, and all of it makes me wonder at Joni's mastery of words and music,
but I continually push the pause button after every song so that I can have
some time to digest and try to understand what I've just heard.
So, when I hear Not To Blame or The Magdalene Laundries or Cherokee Louise
[NRH's the same] or Borderline - and of course there may be more! - well, I
can't accept that this is just a part of what we, as a society, have to
accept! Not all of us get buried anonymously for no reason, not all of us
have stepfathers who yank us to our knees! It's a major chord that
accompanies these words: "Peg O'Connell died today..." - I don't want these
words to be part of everyday life, or even part of a song: I want the
situation that spawned them to be erased from the world forever!
Odd, when I first joined this list, all I wanted was for Joni to paint
another Hejira again, man! Thanks to the patient intervention of several
JMDLers, I listened to Turbulent Indigo with fresh ears (and, more
important, an open heart). To me, it is an infinitely sad album, one I
carry around with me in a state of impotent guilt, because it forces me to
think about and confront issues that I'd rather ignore, because (I think) I
can do nothing to help.
Well, you asked me to listen to Borderline right after Not To Blame.
Borderline is a great, great song.
Not to Blame makes me feel so sad and helpless to help...
I will always wonder whenever I listen to Not To Blame: What were this
girl's aspirations? Did she fight with her brother? Did she put Leonardo
diCaprio photos on her wall with colored thumb tacks? Did her mother and
father cry when they learned of their daughter's death? Will anyone plant
flowers on her grave? What will they do with her CD collection? Who will
explain things to her friends, her siblings, her coffee club mates?? Is
there anyone among her husband's friends who cares enough about her memory
that he tries, at least, to convince her husband not to beat the shit out
of his second wife? And The Magdalene Laundries is just as lacerating to
listen to: will this lonely girl be missed? Will anybody at the local pub
notice that she's not there on Saturday night? Will the clerk at the local
chemist's notice that Peg didn't come in from the cold, as she always did,
to buy a few cheap postcards? Will anybody miss the other girls, the ones
who died of an easily treatable disease that is even easier to ignore? How
deep and comforting is the sigh of relief when a girl dies before she can
embarrass her community!
That's what I hear when I listen to "Not To Blame" and "The Magdalene
Laundries" from Turbulent Indigo, and these are the saddest songs I have
ever heard!

It's soon coming time to start work on the JMDL Birthday Card.
Last year because of the shortage of time I sort of dictated the
ideas and didn't give too much time for discussion. This year I
think it would be a good idea for everyone to get involved right
from the start and submit ideas for the presentation of the card.
After the ideas are submitted we can then all vote on our
favorite. DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR IDEAS YET. I will ask Les to set up
a place to post your ideas to then we can show them all at once.
Now is the time to start thinking!

The reporter/critic was evidently at a different performance than I
was. The croud was responsive to and respectful of Joni. In fact,we
were in rapt awe. His statement that her set list was like spinach:
Full of vitamins but you would rather have ice cream, can only be
described with Albert Finney's line from The Dresser that all critics
are crippled, mentally deficient or dead. I E-mailed Rolling Stone my

For those of you not fortunate enough to be watching the MTV video awards, our
beloved Joni participated in 3 vignettes. I assume all were produced by MTV,
because they have done the "Influences" pieces before. MANY of which, artists
have sited Joni as an influence. I'd say they run from 15 to 30 seconds each.
First of the "Influences" Joni sites Billie Holiday, others in the same
segment are siting Joni (Sarah, Ani, someone I didn't know)
The second vignette was JUST JONI, sitting there describing her admiration for
the composition of Janet Jackson's Got Til It's Gone (The play of the 3 voices
story). I assume kids were sitting in there living rooms thinking "who is
THIS lady?" What was most wonderful was how Joni described the music using
her (cigarette free) hands through the air.
A third segment was "influences" as well. Joni admired Patsy Kline (sp) and
Slllyyyyyy of the Family Stone. Others again, site Joni.
A magnificent gift to the black hole of Joni PR.

i would respectfully suggest that you listen to 'shameless', 'untouchable
face', and 'adam and eve' from her dilate album, and '32 flavors', to name
but one, from her excellent not a pretty face collection (forget alana
davis' fairly-recent cover version, now *that's* contrived).
she may not have the greatest pipes, but she can play the heck out of a
six-string, and, whether you like or hate her attitude, i hardly think it's
a put-on or an affectation. she writes, she sings, she plays, and to top it
off, she owns her label.
in short, whether you come to like her or hate her, i suggest a second
chance.

Normally I would let this type of thing pass but this is Patsy CLINE
(with a 'C') you're talking about here, Duane, one of the most
incredible singers ever to walk the face of the earth. Billie Holiday &
Patsy Cline...my, our Joni certainly does have good taste!
I'm putting a slightly hestitant toe back into the waters of country
music mainly because of Michael Y, Sherrie Goode, Bill D & a few others
on the list. I bought 'Honky Tonk Angels' (Dolly, Tammy & Loretta)
which is awesome and also the new Dolly Parton which has some great new
songs on it. I also now own 2 Lucinda Williams cds and I think she's
GREAT! I don't know if you would consider Lucinda a country
singer...sometimes she sounds like Loretta Lynn but when she rips out a
blues number she reminds me of Janis Joplin. In record stores I've seen
her stuff in both the folk & rock categories but I don't think she's
been in the country bins.
Mark in Seattle....'it wasn't God who made honky tonk angels'...
and on Dolly's new album 'Why don't more women sing honky tonk songs?'

what a thrill to see joni's segment on the
mtv awards! nice black and white format
of her doing what i find almost as entertaining
as her music - just talking. she talked about
the influence of chuck berry on big yellow
taxi (something about it being thought of
as folk because it was done on an acoustic
guitar, but the true feeling of the song was
very berry). Her description of the 3
musical parts that were interwoven through
the janet jackson song was priceless, the
way she sang the "why do you wanna go and do that?"
line was endearing. reprise should get a lot
of credit for this one!
i taped the show, and have not seen all of
it, but i did see madonna's impressive performance
of ray of light with lenny kravitz on guitar
(she won for best female video.) i don't know
what's up with her british accent tho.

Roberto,
I understand you real good. And I can't say anything to improve your
perceptions. All your questions ring true to me, and TI brings us up front to
the dark side. Look at some vanGogs. www.openface.ca/~vangogh/painting
I can tell you Roberto, sometimes those clashes turn beautiful for me. It's
like a quantum change. No in between. What appears desolate and desparing
instantly becomes rich and powerful. And it happens over time, after looking
real close for a long time at my self. The things I see or hear that bring me
down always come back to my inside. Then I see my short falls. Then I find
grace. Then, the quantum change happens and I find happiness.
There is a singer named Michael Kelly Blanchard. His music turned my fears
around. He sings a line, ' the cost of all love comes in the broken heart.
thank god there is forgiveness, to mend the broked heart. '
This helps me get past the eye sores. You are right, not all of us get
burried anonymously. But when one person does, it seems to hurt us all. If
it happens once, ti can happen twice. It can happen to anyone. So we look
inside, and let the breaks mend. Then, we reach out. Then maybe one less
person is anonymous.
Then, sometimes I find the courage to look into the turbulent indigos. With
confidence. Sometimes.
Thanks for your honesty. PJ

1974: Joni joined the European leg of the CSNY tour, as did Jesse Colin
Young, her old friend from the New York folk circuit. [Today], Joni and
Jesse appeared at Wembley stadium, along with the Band, at an event
unlikely to be forgotten by anyone lucky enough to attend. 10 days later,
Sounds Magazine publishes a story on Joni's appearance at the event.
It reads "...an artist who relies on this special brand of
audience-performer rapport, loses some of the magic in an exaggerated
situation like the Wembley superconcert. Despite excellent support from Tom
Scott and the L A Express who smoothly decorate her stories, Joni Mitchell
does not belong in a performing situation the size of the mammoth stadium.
Too many of the lovely subtleties so integral to her music were swallowed
up by the gargantuan sound system."

To me the only cool thing about the show were the Joni influence snips.
Yeah the Beasties were cool, but I get peeved when these "artists" use a
crappy awards show as a forum to go off on world politics. Just ain't the
time or place. But that's IMHO. Stiller is a trip, did you see the way the
audience wasn't reacting to him? The skits were awful. I still crack up at
Chris Rock from last year after Marilyn Manson's appearance.... Anybody
else remember the "Go straight to church...line"? I actually enjoyed seeing
Marilyn's new look and act last night, I'll pick up his latest. Seeing
Marilyn on stage with back-up singers was interesting. Quite a far cry from
his days at the Roxy with the Smells Like Children weird props. Hey where
was twiggy last night???

Hi All,
Happy Birthday's around the house to all who came forth in the month of
September. On each ones personal day may you be Queens and Kings and
live life with a special largeness that day.
This morning while driving to the post office to pick up my mail I'm
tuned to my fav radio station WXPN. Floating over the air waves and
directly into my conscience I hear:
"I'm going to take you to my secret place ... ... " Need I say
more!!!! JONI !!!
When I got home I immediately call the station and thank them for
playing Joni. Raving about the Gorge and Garden concerts. I also asked
if they had received her latest cd TTT. The dj said she thought she
saw that it had come in. My response to this ( which got a big,
pleasant laugh from her) was: " Girl friend !! Don't do that to me.
Go over to the bend of new arrivals and make sure!! If it's there let
the world hear a cut or two. If not please get it. Playing Sex Kills,
Not To Blame or Borderline would momentarily help to keep you in my good
graces." While laughing she said: Believe me I will do the best that I
can." I said: "Great, You got my ear so play to it, and thanks very
much." ... ...
She asked for my name and where I was from. In a lower voice I heard
her say, as if to herself or writing it down -- Play more Joni and
look for TTT.
Since they had just played "My Secret Place" just moments before I'm
not expecting to hear another Joni cut with in the next hour. But keep
those calls and emails to your fav radio stations flowing. Let them
know that we want MORE JONI ON THE AIR.
It's been great reading all the reports from the latest Jonifest. Each
new one that takes place will have it's own personality and character.
But they will all speak to the natural high we get from sharing our love
of Joni and music with each other face to face and spirit to spirit.
I'm sorry I could not get to the one at Ashara's. But glad that all who
attended had a blast with life long memories to hold on to. Plus the
shared hope and willingness to attend more. Optimus, Optimus. Joni
Rocks and so does the JMDL.

I like this a lot.
Another suggestion:
I like my parody photo of my version of TTT called
"I's a Muggin' with Mugsy!" (Kakki's kitty), and
that is the photo I want used of me for Joni's BD card.
You can see it half-way down the page at:
http://www.jmdl.com/gallery/party9805.htm
Would it be toooo redundant for everyone to do a cute
TTT-type pose, or even one from your favorite album or
Joni photo? There is plenty of time to get our mugs
into the committee or jpeg a version.
I like the idea of a quick pan photo deal, instead of
poetry and long prose to her, since I think she might
be too busy to read and respond. A once-over kind
of huge card with us on it would be peachy I think
for our Scorpio girl.

As I still am coming to grips with the fact that I missed out on this event
due to NorthWest's strike, I thought I'd just drop a short note about my

First, this incredible list has offered me the unique opportunity of making
some wonderful friends- some whom I've met, some whom I'm aching to meet (hey
grammer police- is it whom or who..or whomers..). Ashara, who(m) I feel such a
kinship to and who I was so looking forward to having met (Waaaahhh), thanks
for trying everything in your power to get me out to Boston. I hear it was
quite a musical happening.
And dear Marian, my musical soulmate. How I was looking forward to connecting
up again! I spent weeks and weeks brushing up on my Jonijingles and learning
new songs, hoping to come home with songs I'd learned from you (did you play I
Think I Understand??). I missed watching those fingers fly and awing over your

Chin dropping even more. ChuckE! I lost the chance of hearing Rainy Night LIVE

But I sure did enjoy reading all of your reports. So, until we meet again, I

I suggest that our birthday card to Joni be a collage of photos from the JMDL
events and gatherings since her last birthday, including Julie's Jonifest in
Pittsburgh, the West Coast concert tour, Joni and the JMDL at Woodstock and
Ashara's Labor Day Jonifest and any other appropriate photos as may be
submitted. The collage and a Happy Birthday wish with the roundup of usual

little album or packet of the best photos of Joni taken by Pearl, Marsha,

1994: (From Wally's bio page): [Today] Joni and Larry stopped by Santa
Monica, Ca. radio station KCRW-FM and taped a broadcast with DJ Chris
Douridas for his excellent series "Morning Becomes Eclectic." This
hour-long broadcast is noteworthy because of the stellar sound, and the
fact that Joni and Larry were performing together on the air for perhaps
the last time. In conversation, Joni spoke of their separation for the
first time, and said they were obviously still friends. Two songs of the
seven they performed that day have appeared on disc. "Moon at the Window"
has appeared as a B-side for Joni's "How Do You Stop" CD single, and "Just

broadcast on the morning of October 25th.

Each person on the joni list could assemble their own birthday card

The jmdl is certainly not a place for the thinned-skinned, and it's also
completely ridiculous to expect that everybody would get along. A bunch of
'yes' men would be a bit boring, don't you think? Folks write things they
sometimes don't mean (myself included) and jmdlers are known to apologize
in their posts too.
Perhaps, there is a site at www.campKumbaya.com where some of us would be
most happy----I know I wouldn't be. The beauty of this internet community,
for me, has been to oberve many people debate, argue, flame and **often**
resolve, or simply forget about their conflicts over time. If people have
left the list because of passionate debates that flare up, it's my
guess---- they have deep issues surrounding conflict or cannot handle being
disagreed with or challenged by occansional asshole-like behavior------in
their non-cyber life as well.) I like Paul Ivice's idea just fine.

*Mariana (that's me, you know) learns something about OUTER-space INNER-space
and HERSELF at the immaculate star PAULA COLE's 9/9/98 concert at the
TROUBADOUR*****
The first time I went to the Troubadour, it was to see the divine Elliott
Smith. I wasn't really familiar with small clubs or the "music" scene really.
This time, I can honestly say I knew the ropes better. I had one ticket, only
because I knew no one would come see Paula Cole with me, but I felt perfectly
comfortable standing in line to get in, squeezing my way to a great spot near
the stage, and taking a poster off the wall (it's now on my wall 'o music,
next to Sarah, Elliott, And Joni).
I met up with a Crossroads alumni and we exchanged words on 11th grade hell,
students, drugs, college...the usual stuff. The opening act was Sherri
Jackson, who I liked a little. I was really pumped for Paula though. I had
seen her at Lilith in '97. Suffice it to say that the Troubadour is a bit more
intimate than Irvine Meadows. As the alumni said to me, "The size of this
place is brilliant."
The roadies began setting up the stage. Paula had a picture of Bob Marley
(who I just cannot enjoy one little bit) set up at the back of the stage. Her
piano was pushed to one side. The roadies put out candles, lit incense, and
put a bunch of roses on the piano.
When Elliott performed, he just rushed out onto the bare stage with his
guitar and began to play. Paula was a little more elaborate. The crowd was
mostly older, some hippies, college students, and people like me. Paula fans
one and all. It was refreshing to be around people who aren't like, "Oh, isn't
she the one who doesn't...shave?" when I mention that I like her. Get over
yourselves. If you weren't so narrow and shallow, maybe you could appreciate
it, scudballs.
Her band took the stage and the guitarist began to play. Then Paula sauntered
on stage, resplendent in a long flowy red skirt, black halter top, black
cardigan sweater and white boa. She sang "Working Class Hero" among cheers.
During the song, she shed her cardigan and boa.
Paula looked so beautiful with her long shiny hair. She's an amazing
performer. She did every song off "The Fire", excluding "Niestchze's Eyes",
"Road to Dead", and "Hush Hush Hush". She also performed some off "Harbinger",
"Bethlehem", "Hitler's Brothers", and "I Am So Ordinary". Throughout the
entire show she was dancing and being so active and wonderful. Her voice is
simply amazing. And she is so expressive! When singing "Bethlehem", she looked
as if she was about to cry and so was I.
In the middle of "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone", when she sings, "I will
do the laundry while you go have a beer" she lifted her middle finger up in
the air. Empowering, amazing! She played the piano sometimes, but mostly she
was up dancing. She did a great 10 minute version of "Feelin' Love" which she
said was her song about sex. My favorite songs "Throwing Stones" and
"Mississippi" worked their way into the set too. I was dancing and cheering
and having the greatest time. She got two encores. The first, she sang "I Am
So Ordinary", sitting alone at the piano. Then she did "Carmen".
For the second, she came on in a long black dress, black boa, black gloves,
and platinum wig, to sing Edith Piaf's "La Vie En Rose".
It was one of the most empowering, faboulous, wonderful concert experiences
I've ever been too and I will cherish it always. It was a great way to really
end summer.
