Oh no! What does it mean if, when you first put a CD in, you hear a
repeated funny little high-pitched whirring squeaking noise? And
when you play the CD, there's noise and skips and momentary stuck
places (not subtle - unlistenable).
Can anyone help?

Subject: Dutifully Reporting from Party Central
Hi everyone!
Ashara here, reporting from the lovely Topsfield, MA home of the now famous
New England Labor Day weekend Jonifest. It all starting in the airport
yesterday, where I went at 4PM, armed with a rose in my teeth, and a lampshade
crown. I set up shop with my Clouds vinyl album cover, and waited for the
first arrival, none other than Kakki all the way from CA. Well, there were
quite a few people that saw me before Kakki did, and the reactions ranged from
stony stares to "Looks like it's going to be a good weekend for you!", "Boy
are you brave to be wearing that, here!", "I see the party's already started
for you!" and, lastly, from someone from the LA flight (of course), "I have a
hat just like that at home!"
Next, we went to pick up Pearl, and waited for Jim. And waited.......and
waited....and waited.................(long story). Finally, Jim left a message
on my machine that he was going to make his own way to Topsfield, so northward
we drove.
Waiting at the house was Chuck and Claud, on the back deck, in complete
darkness by this time, playing the guitar, and battling the deadly "Topsfield
Mosquitos." Dinner was started, (a lovely vegetarian Corn-Cheddar Chowder for
those of you that "just *have* to know!") fresh bread and salad. Maggie then
arrived shortly afterwards with Marian and Michael Paz, and we finally sat
down to eat around 10PM.
Dessert was a little VG-8, several acoustics, and a bit of piano thrown in.
David and John arrived about 1:30 AM. (Ah, to be young again!) We sang and
played until the better part of 4 AM., and somehow that ol' internal clock of
mine woke me less than 3 hours later! So, here I am, blurry-eyed at my
computer, keeping you informed of all the happenings. If you want further news
about the party, I'm afraid you will have to ask someone "that was there", as
I will be sound asleep in a corner at just about the time the party is
officially starting!
Miss you all!
Your roving Labor Day reporter,
Ashara (with hugs, of course!)

Happy weekend to everyone - especially to the Bostonians (I was almost one
myself, but it didn't pan out - now am excited about the possibilities of a
"Southeastern JMDL gathering" in Atlanta to coincide with Joni's appearance
there as part of TTT tour, which will definitely happen, I keep praying...
Moving Through Madness contribution: I'm in the midst of those who put Joni in
the general mix of music playing - I agree that the radio offers nothing, save
for World Cafe or other eclectic - non-commercial venues. Joni is always so
far superior to radio fare...anyway, my madness is when I get Jonisongs
running through my head as the result of a post - this happened twice this
week, and it's usually a great thing, as well as way to search out other Joni
fans, when I'm humming, whistling, or singing the song. However, the madness
occurred when the "song" in my head was "I's A Muggin" as a result of Bill D's
hilarious post. So I'm playing tennis with my son and the :08-long "song"
plays in my head about 50,000 times! Oh well, it could be worse, now I've got
Barry White on the Brain ;-D
Lucinda Williams: Let me chime in with thumbs up on "Car Wheels" as well,
Julius. I've had it in the car for 2 weeks now on random with 9 other discs,
and every time a track comes on it sounds so fresh and real. I far prefer it
to the new Liz Phair, which is also very good.
Local Update: The Bi-Lo Center, named after the Grocery Store Chain (we also
have Winn-Dixie) opened Thursday with sellouts for Janet Jackson & Pearl Jam
last night. The Arena seats about 15,000 for concerts, I'm fantasizing that
you know-who will add it to her schedule when she tours in support of TTT> Of
course, being the only Joni fan in SC, the ticket sales won't be too strong,
but boy, will I get a good seat!
Must go now to free up phone - party on Ashara and crew!
Welcome aboard Claire! Add me to your buddy list "RMuRocks" and we can chat
sometime! Seanapper to for that matter...

many teenagers do you expect to buy TTT anyway.
Esther is certainly entitled to her opinion; I don't think that's in dispute.
Mariana, you are a fine writer -- I don't know if you've heard TTT yet, but
if/when you have, perhaps you would consider sending a rebuttal of Esther's
critique to Jane? You asked how many teenagers we expect to buy TTT -- maybe
a few more WILL buy it if they read a good review from someone like you, who
actually reads and likes the magazine.
Just a thought ... if just one more young person hears and loves Joni, then
her music and message is passed on (at least) once more ...

Dear Listers,
Hello, this is Robbert from Holland writing. I just got back from my
local record store, and they had a poster hanging with a long list of
upcoming releases. TTT is on there for September 25th!! Which makes
sense. Usually if an album is OFFICIALY scheduled for a Monday release
(which is the case with TTT in Europe), it will be available the weekend
prior to that, since people tend to buy more music during the weekend, I
was told. So another 20 days to go!!
Best,

Thanks, Jerry, for posting the Billboard mag review/interview yesterday!
One quote of Joni that really jumped out at me was:
"If you avoid doing what's cool, you won't have bell-bottom pants on your
songs down the road." That's great!
Very recently, there was discussion on this list about Bruce Cockburn.
I'm not familiar with him, but after reading various comments on his work, I
decided I needed to check him out. And now I can kick myself because both he
and Dar Williams (one of my favorites) were at Seattle's Bumbershoot.
Unfortunately, I didn't read the schedule until late Friday night, only to
find that they both played earlier on Friday evening! :( I'm interested in
hearing about Dar's performance from anyone who attended.
Enjoy yourselves, Boston party-goers!

Hi there,
Do you feel like putting a GREAT record in your CD player?
How about:
Ozark Mountain Daredevils - 13 (New Era)
This is what Billboard has to say:
"Like NRBQ, Ozark Mountain Daredevils has been around
for eons, delighting thousands of fans from sea to sea but
never selling a proportionate share of records. The Springfield
quintet - which formed in 1971 - excels at blues-soaked
country, Appalachian folklore and Southern rock.
Made up of guitarist John Dillon, harpist/percussionist Steve
Cash, bassist/mandolinist Michael ' Supe' Granda and lead
guitarist Bill Brown (all of whom sing), as well as drummer
Ron Gremp, the group delivers original tunes that have the
ring of classics.
Highlights of this consistently charming album are the catchy
' Standing On The Corner Of Live And Learn ', the rocking ' New
York ', and the sweet, reflective ballads ' Where Are We ' and
' If It's True ' .
A group of journeymen who have amassed an ardent following
over decades of unpretentious service to their craft and the
dying art of winning over fans the old-fashioned way."
A highly recommended album!
If you're having trouble finding this gem in your local record
store, please try:
NewEraline@aol.com
Direct your inquiries to Benny Smith and tell him I sent you!
Good luck!

I feel this way too. I've only listened to the TTT cuts 1 or 2 times.
When the album is finally released I want some anticipation and

Whoops - decided to snip this from my other post but then forgot to snip it

As a (non-music) retailer, here are some random thoughts in no particular
order prompted by suggestions for mass (i.e. rigged) purchase.
(1) Mass purchase can cause all of the inventory & return problems above.
Also it can cause the supply chain to hiccup - all the re-ordering retailers
clear out the stock from suppliers in double-quick time - and what was a sales
zoom becomes a fall off a cliff until more supplies get through - by which
time demand has died due to the non-availability. I've seen it happen.
(2) ANY decent music retailer should be able to order you a copy of TTT in
advance - retailers love firm orders - and some of their returns entitlement
may depend on buying in advance. Choose whose pockets you put your money into.
(3) Most retailers love sustained sellers that sell by word-of-mouth. Tell
your friends about TTT - and Joni's rich back catalogue! Three years on from
release, people are still buying "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" in my bookstore
on recommendations from friends, spouses, lovers and acquaintances. A little
media exposure doesn't do any harm, either......let's hope the Billboard
article + interview is followed by many more.
(4) I've run out of steam ... I hope I'm not reacting to a leg-pull, as Azeem
in London
suggests.
