i am going to be in new york on the 16th, and
would love to see you big city folk if possible.
my friend wants to see a play called "stupid kids"
(anyone interested?)
here's some joni content btw - in an article about
the new lauren hill cd, there is a brief mention
of joni, saying that it seemed like joni was an
influence. I don't have the cd yet, tho it is
very high on my must buy list.
The cd debuted at #1, pushing out Madonna's
Ray of Light I believe. (leaving me wondering
how that makes michael yarbrough feel since
i know he greatly admires both of these
women ;-)

This was the _Rolling Stone_ review, which I posted a couple of
weeks back. It happened at the same time Joni was popping up
all over Liz Phair's reviews. It didn't call Joni an influence so much
as compare Lauryn's obvious talent and willingness to let it shine
simply to Joni's. The reviewer focused on the non-showiness of
Lauryn and Joni's work, which I thought was incredibly insightful.
You can probably still find it on www.rollingstone.com.
The album is INCREDIBLE, though it took me a couple of listens
to reach this verdict. I hadn't posted yet because it came so soon
after my Liz Phair effusiveness that I risked caricaturing myself,
but I now think Lauryn's album is superior to Liz's (if that matters at
all) and is the best album of the year. Of special note to Joni fans
(probably Joni herself) would be Lauryn's skill as a lyricist, not so
much w/ the meanings, etc. of the words, but with the structure,
rhymes, etc. One song rhymes on the same syllable the entire
way through--breathtaking!! Another uses a unobtrusively virtuosic
AAB CCB rhyme scheme.
In a way, _The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill_ reminds me of HOSL,
because though it's obviously inspired by very personal experiences,
a lot of the focus is external and could be interpreted as being
aloof or critical if her performance wasn't so warm and honest.
This record is one the few I can remember that makes me respect
not just the work but the artist as a person. Lauryn's values and
wisdom are clear as a clarion. In the right mood, listening to
_Miseducation_ can be an intensely personal one-on-one
conversation with the artist, and if that doesn't recall Joni, I don't
know what does!
One last bit of rapture must be reserved for the song "To Zion."
This song honestly inspires me to convulsive movement. It's so
visceral, almost gospel, in her love for her newborn son. As much
as I love Maddie, "To Zion" blows her putrid "Little Star" out of the
water.
Speaking of whom:
<<>>
_Miseducation racked up 423K in one-week US sales, besting the
record set by ROL in March of ~370K for one-week sales by a solo
female artist. Chances are very high that both women will be
banished by Alanis's follow-up in November, which could top 800K
in the first week.
I highly recommend both _Miseducation_ and _Ray of Light_, as
well as _whitechocolatespaceegg_, _Car Wheels on a Gravel Road_,
and _from the choirgirl hotel_. Ignore all the hype about previous
years: 1998 is THE year of women in rock as far as I'm concerned.
Only Rufus Wainwright, the Beasties and Pulp come to mind on the
men's side this year so far, but the number of artistically mature
women's releases is astounding.
In any case, I wish both Lauryn and Madonna well...

Sounds a bit like Joe Kennedy's mass purchases of "Profiles in Courage"
to me.
What happens when, based upon these early sales, stores order more
shipments which don't sell as rapidly? And there are a lot of returns.
Typically, a store is not allowed to return "new releases," so their
inventory sits and sits. Once they can return the stuff, they get dinged
with penalties and handling charges. Not a profitable scenario.
On top of that, her stuff gets a reputation of not having strong enough
legs to warrant re-orders.
For an artist who is so involved with the product, from music to
packaging and design, you'd think she would have a deeper finger in the
promotion pie.

Subject: RE: TTT promotion
In addition to MG's good comments, I would have to add that even at our
best, 500 of us buying, say, 30 copies each would equal exactly 15,000
copies. This week's Billboard #1 album sold 423,000 copies, or 28.2
times the amount the JMDL could purchase in its wildest dreams. The
number 32 album sold 37,000 copies, so we might be able to have an
impact in that realm of the chart. But the best we could do would be
to push Joni perhaps five spots. The deck against grassroots promotion
of anything--be it a political candidate or an album--is huge in this age of
high-tech marketing. It's up to Reprise and, yes, Joni herself to do the
interviews, in-store displays, single promotion, and touring necessary to
sell the record.
Plus, when we return our records, the negative sales will reduce her
following weeks' totals that a large chart plummet will result that
may be more newsworthy than her high debut. The spots in the lower
regions of the chart are separated by only a few albums each, which
makes for very precarious manipulation.
In the short-term one-week scenario, we could move Joni from 100 to
90, or maybe 30 to 25, but if she's in the top 10 it'll be all credit to Joni
and Reprise. Please continue spreading the word, though, because
though it may not affect short-term trends, the long-term effects are
immeasurable.

Ha! A friend and I share nearly identical tastes in music and have spent many

I have just figured out that I can tape from my phono (vinal) on my 2 year
old system. (ok, so sometimes I'm dense!) This is great, since I didn't
have Joni's older albums on cassette to listen to in the car.
Question: As I was looking over the Clouds album cover, I noticed that she
had dedicated it to Sadie J. McKee. Maybe I'm being dense again but I don't
remember hearing about this Sadie on the list. Maybe it's on Wally's site
but it's been a while since I have gone through the whole site. Anyone know
about Sadie?
Also, Wally, I think it's rotten that you have to pay all the postage for

Great to know I'm not alone Michael! You may or may not know that they've now
split up, and Clive is now living and working in Nashville. I'm following
Christine's career with great interest; she released her 3rd solo album
earlier this year, "The Dark Gift of Time", and it's a beauty. It's got a
great version of Bruce Cockburn's [hey, this post wasn't just thrown
together...] "The Whole Night Sky", and a whole host of other delights, mostly
covers, with an exquisite song of her own, "Always There", which brings tears
to my eyes every time I hear it. It's on a very small label, Fledg'ling
(catalogue no. FLED 3016).
Christine also has a web site, at www.thebeesknees.com - it has the usual
biog/discography and a couple of very nice interviews about her last two
albums. It doesn't seem to have been updated recently, but it does say that a
North American tour is imminent, so check it out!
BTW, she's also recorded "Shades of Scarlett Conquering" on a live album, and
was including "Sex Kills" in her repertoire about 3 or 4 years ago.

LTILT [Last thing I listened to...]: "Spinning" by Pooka, an amazing album
from an exceptionally idiosyncratic (female) duo. I could stretch to a
tangential Joni thread mention here, because something Pooka are brilliant at
is harmonies, ones which you can't "get" on a first listen, and can even sound
out of tune. The album's last song ends with about 15 minutes of ocean waves
washing up on the shore, superbly recorded - you can actually hear the foam
dissolving! Fabulous to listen to in a dark room, at very loud volume,
preferably with a glass of wine... or whatever your preferred poison may be.

The reasons for not doing this have been discussed. Obviously it would end up

My thought is that if you want to buy up the entire stock of TTT at your local
chain, go for it. But instead of returning the excess, sell the extras for $1

I think the original "Grandma's Hands" is by Bill Withers - he wrote it.
www.allmusic.com lists lots of versions including Livingston Taylor. I also
have a cover by Merry Clayton (she sung on the Stones' Gimme Shelter) on an
old, forgotten LP, that also has a brilliant cover of Neil Young's Southern
Man. I forget where I picked up this record, years ago, but it's one of
those nice old, pre-oil crisis discs that's stiff and fat. And the cover is
rigid card. Excuse me if I reminisce :-) Life just seemed more, um, solid,
then.

June Tabor. It's on Aqaba, one of her best. Coincidentally, she was on TV

That song was written by Bill Withers and recorded by him in 1971. It
originally appeared on the Sussex label in 1971 and was re-released on on the
album _Just As I Am_ (Columbia 1985). Booker T. Jones produced the song.
Reached #18 on the R&B charts and #42 on the Pop charts in '71. I love this
song. I have it on _Lean On Me, the Best of Bill Withers_ one of my favorite

Subject: Gitchee Gumee /absolutely NJC
Hi all,
Except that we listened to Taming The Tiger (don't get
excited, just the
four songs from the 'Morning becomes eclectic' show) on the
way up.
We went out of town again. Up north (or 'up nort' if yer a
reel Minnesotan) Let me tell ya 'bout it.
The north shore of Lake superior a.k.a. Gitchi Goomee to
the Chippewa (Ojibwa) is like the PCH Highway #1 in
California, only in
miniature,
with tall MN pine and white birch forest on one side
and the cliffs of Gitche Goomee on the other. Along the way,
Hwy 61;
God said to Abraham "Kill me a Son"
Abe say "man, you must be puttin' me on"
God said "no'
Abe said "what"
God said "you can do what you Abe, but the next time you
see me comin' you better run"
Abe said "where you want this killin' done"
and God said "out on Hwy 61". - Bob Dylan
Yeah, that Hwy 61, twists along the shoreline for 150
miles (108mi. to Grand Marais where we went) to the Canadian
border.
Along the way there are all kinds of quaint little MN towns
and touristy things to do.On the way back we "cut across
Shorty, Shorty cut across" (I know, another song quote!) to
Hibbing to do a sort of Bob Dylan's home town as Mecca kind
of thing. Kim took a picture of me standing in front of
Bob's childhood home. I can just hear the people who live
there now; "oh look Martha, there's another ass hole gettin'
his picture taken in the yard!" The wierd thing is that
you can't get to Hibbing from the north shore. There is no
good way to do it. We stopped in a small town on the shore
(Little Marais) to ask the most direct route to Hibbing,
pulling out my map to show her that there is no way to get
there. The woman pulls out a forestry map and says "oh here,
you need one of these." Turns out that there is a way to get
to Hibbing. 30 miles of dirt roads, about 13 miles of it is
single lane. We were way out in the back woods of northern
MN. The map put us through several turns, lefts, rights, Y's
in the road, each one perfectly depicted on the map. Thank
god for accurate maps 'cause if you get lost out there, you
are seriously lost!
We stayed a couple of nights in Duluth, which is like a
miniature San Francisco with Lake Superior on one side,
as big as you need it to be, and
the rolling hills of Duluth on the other. The whole area is
kinda like a miniature Bay area. Anyway, it was fun, and it
was near home. We drove about 500 miles total over the five
days we were gone. Covered quite a bit of 'the arrowhead'
area of the state, which I had never done. Fun! See ya
later.

How about a car, train, bus, limo...? Just wishing you could be there! I
feel like I'm really missing out not meeting you!

hey folks,
bill comes into nyc on the 16th, it'll be great to see him. it'd be
particularly nice to find some good music-listening that night.
on the 19th, several of us are having dinner with roberto holliston, who'll
be visiting from victoria, at tanti baci, where joni b-dayed last year.
it's so nice that you're all coming to see me, i just wish there was
something to DO in new york.
'nother joni mention. times reported some joni-like warbling next to
roberta flack understatement, in a mostly positive review of a new album by
des'ree. she had a single that really grabbed me last summer, 'ya gotta
be'. a raspy, low key r&b voice so satisfying after whitney, mariah, toni,
waterlog-girl ...

well i fall on both sides on this, but reading and writing about this is
making me smile. barry white indeed!!
these days i'm much like michael, fascinated with my collection, my
friends' collections, nearly every acquantaince's musical tastes.
i've been exchanging mush tapes with jonilisters all summer, almost as soon
as i returned from pittsburgh. and in my wonderful job i left in april,
after 4 years, one of the greatest things was that so many musicians worked
there. music played in every office, always different, never radio-ready.
if none of the 50 or so cds and cassettes in my office suited, i travelled
a few feet and found dylan, thelonius, billie, 'sunday in the park', taylor
dayne, son house, i could go on and on. i have been ravenous to know it
all, to understand it all.
but i've had some wonderful times of musical obsession. i saw kate bush on
saturday night live in '78 but i never actually bought an album until
'hounds' and i had some major time of musical obsession, let me tell you.
just an odyssey, going to 'the kick inside', starting to snag '45s and
eps. i really do think that i listened to nothing but kate, for some weeks
or months. and i was already such a passionate music-lover.
morrissey/the smiths came to me after the band broke up. events in my life
made that music extremely important to me. again, i'm sure i was immersed
forever.
and in 96, after listening to joni since shadows and light, i had my
attention on one evening focused in a way that sent me into another
all-consuming session, this time for joni. pulling out the 9 or 10 albums
i had. reading about her. collecting what was missing. i still can
barely contribute about clouds or djrd because i've owned them such a short
time. i was obsessed, so much that 8 months passed from when i first
visited wally's site, until i knew there was a discussion list...
probably not all joni-all-the-time, but an intensity that felt like 'moving
through madness' i don't think this is ever a bad thing.

Julius asked:
<< What does everyone think of Lucinda
Williams? She's a critic's darling around here these days, and of course
she's touring with Dylan and Morrison now like Joni did. I've been waiting
to
hear opinions from the list before I decided to buy in or demur. Did I miss
the scuttlebutt?
>>
Her new CD is very good and highly recommended. Several of us have been
touting it via list scuttlebutt: Sherrie, Michael and a few of others. You may
as well pick up the equally strong "Sweet Old World" while you're shelling out
$$$. Lucinda is fantastic, bless her heart. :)

to affirm the kingpin
'car wheels on a gravel road' has been in our tape deck in the car ALL SUMMER!
we've listened, analysis, sung every song. They're really gems. I picked up
the reissue of her self-titled album (that's right "lucinda williams")- the
one with passionate kisses. the production isn't as sharp and her voice is a
bit softer & sweeter- but everyone of those songs are gems too- plus- they've
added some live recordings as bonus tracks at the end.
also after the recent pentangle thread - i picked up a 2-cd collection called
'light flight'- a good deal- but a butt ugly cover! 1997 issue- on Recall.
it's a best of + solo and other joint projects. i wasn't familiar with
pentangle except by name- and what a great surprise!
and several have mentioned june tabors 'king of rome'. that song still chokes
me up! what a sweet song/story! Aqaba and angel tiger are both essential june
listenings.
