It says: "The key to understanding where Joni's at as a player, is to realise that she is 'Queen of the Alternative Tunings'. Having done some research into the subject, I must credit the excellent web-site www.jonimitchell.com for doing a commendably thorough job of collating her guitar songs and their respective tunings. If you really want to immerse yourself in her material, navigate your way through her fifty-odd tunings, and get a detailed explanation of her ingenious mnemonic code for remembering them, I highly recommend a visit". Guitarists note: it has a few examples (music and tab) of "Joni-style" music, but these are just made-up sections of songs, using Joni tunings. They are not transcriptions of *actual* Joni material (presumably, because they couldn't get the permissions to publish those). This mag also has a "Girls and Guitars" feature that I mentioned a week or so ago, with Joni coming in at no. 1. It has a short article on each artist featured. Les: I have a copy of the mag for you! I'll try and type up the small section on Joni soon to add to the articles section at jmdl.com Wally: Would you like a copy of the magazine too? Let me know. QUOTAT? Isn't she! I think it's funny. I use it because it holds more meaning than just the two words printed. Firstly, it wishes that the reader may have a Jonexperience between now and the next time, whether merely hearing a song on the radio or seeing a picture in a magazine, or having an experience that is enlightening to their lives. Secondly Joni to me is the Queen of love, integrity, power, passion etc.etc.etc. and wishing much Joni on someone hopefully should reflect her power on to the reader. Someone said it conveys the same intent and feeling as My Best To You does. I hope it does. That's how I mean it. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Sep 1998 10:54:49 -0000 From: "Steven A. I read her post while I was in a cyber cafe while vacationing Toronto and went nuts with excitement. I wrote to her and begged for a copy, I just had to hear those unrecorded songs. I also suggested she send it to simon for inclusion in a future tape tree. She was out of town for awhile but I got the recording and xerox 's of the album photos that she graciously copied for me this weekend and I love listening to it. Joni is definitely in helium voice on some of it but she shares some interesting stories. I think I really like Come to the Sunshine. Vali is the same as the "things go better with coca cola" song she sings on an earlier tape tree, the others are intricately woven melodies but a bit hard to hear the words. I wonder if they're on Wally's site. I'll have to listen again to give more detailed impressions. This was recorded shortly before what she said was her first album called Song to a Seagull. She actually had Morning Morgantown written before her first album. I'm in Joni heaven this week as I've also gotten 2 tapes from tape tree 7 with the 1974 concert. I'll bring the other tape with me to Jonifest. I found a CD I had never seen before!! "By the Banks of the River Charles". It is a live recording from 1968 in Cambridge Mass. at "Club 47". Songs: Night in the City, Gift of the Magi, I had a king, Morning Morgantown, Vali, Song to a Seagull, Both Sides Now, Cactus FREE, Conversation, Come to the Sunshine, Chelsea Morning, Pirate of Penance, Th= e Way It Is and Dawn Treader! She does a lot of talking in her "helium" voice. Great pics, no lyrics printed. Has anyone else come across this recording or are we in Cleveland "running behind the times"? In keeping with the above sentiment, I walked down to Seattle's Public Market on my lunch break today. There are always street musicians performing there. Today was a beautiful sunny Wednesday and I was thinking about a woman I used to see down at the market almost every time I went there who would stand or sit at a corner or in front of a store & sing. She has a soft, but nice, expressive voice. There was always something odd about her eyes that made me wonder if she was visually impaired in some way. Well anyway, a little way down the block after she crossed my mind, lo & behold, there she was, sitting in the shade of an awning, strumming an autoharp, I believe and singing 'Carey'. I stopped and listened while she finished. Then I bent down, stuck a dollar in her basket and said, 'Joni's my all-time favorite. Thank you.' and then went on my way to get the best marionberry frozen yogurt in the WORLD at the Shy Giant. Here's what happened- I originally was put in contact with a woman at Random House, who okayed the free books for the writers contest. She then referred me over to a woman in the publicity department. On May 5th, after the writers contest was over, I sent that contact the winners names and addresses, and thought that would be all I would need to do. What I didn't know and didn't find out until July, was that no one received their books. When I found this out, I attempted to contact the first woman I spoke to, who it turns out was away on maternity leave. When her replacement called me, he tole me that she said that she didn't remember anything about a contest! So I suggested to the replacement that he please call the woman I had dealt with in the publicity department. When he called her office, he was told that she'd quit the company! Anyway, I finally talked the replacement into coughing up the free books, but instead of sending one copy to each winner, he sent all the books to me. (They arrived a few days ago). He felt this was some sort of a compromise since he couldn't verify the offer of the free books. (This is some of the shit I have to deal with trying to work in Joni's business world). So I bought large mailing envelopes today and I'll be sending out a copy of the book to each winner of the contest by late next week. Thanks so much for your patience! Competition at record stores that week will be the second in The Bootleg Series from Bob Dylan, a new Sheryl Crow album, and a collaborative album from Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach. See the painting on this page: http://www.JoniMitchell.com/upcoming2.html BUYING TTT In the past I've discussed how the Billboard album charts work, and the fact that SoundScan is a system they use to count CD sales and compute an album's position on the charts. These days, the position an album reaches in it's first week is almost always the highest position the album ever reaches- it's historical peak position. It is during that first crucial week that an artist's most dedicated fans are expected to run out to the store and buy it. Ordinarily, for sales of Joni's albums, I would recommend and approve of buying from small mom and pop CD stores, or from one of the newer online services, but unfortunately, these methods of purchasing TTT won't help Joni secure a high debut on those all-important Billboard charts. What you need to do on Taming The Tiger's release day is to physically go to a large CD store that is a participant in the SoundScan method (your store uses it if they pass the barcode of the CD over a scanner when they ring up your sale) and buy the album. If you don't purchase TTT on the first day, then you need to purchase a copy during the first five or six days after its release. Go to Tower, Virgin or another large store in your area. I'll be at my local Tower on September 29th, buying copies for myself and my friends- in both cassette and CD format, of course. Thanks, Joni-philes!
