BTW, I was one of those screaming fans at the BB King concert last weekend. Last time I saw BB play was in Davis, CA in 1969, and he was gettin' old then--compared to all the young rock stars of that era anyway! Now he's 72 and has paid almost 30 more years of dues! [Hey y'all gotta see him and James Brown in Blues Bros 2000!] As to the Sons, thx for letting us know that they are making a comeback! One of the Sons most inspirational songs was Follow Your Heart...but there were so many! I've got those Sons albums somewhere. Great stuff! Great memories! And I join in the vote for For the Roses. Hmmm... The truth is that JoniMitchell.com is Joni's offcial site. I have close contact with Joni's managers and together we registered the domain name of JM.com almost a year and a half ago. Joni herself has visited and approved of what I do on the JMHP. My agreement with Joni's business people is such that I made it clear when we registered the domain name, that I'm in charge of what goes onto the page (or not) and they do not have a say in what I do. This leaves me in charge and allows the site to be more than a typical promotional site. I try all the time to strengthen the relationship with both Joni's managers and Reprise Records and to get info more often and more quickly. Joni's managers are responsible for me travelling with Joni's tour back in May and for Sue McNamara taking my place at the "Garden" show. Reprise called me to help fill seats at the Burbank tapings that followed the tour. So the relationship is growing and we're benefiting from it. (BTW, I'm looking for someone who will be attending Joni's benefit show on September 18th. Please contact me privately if you';re going. Thanks!) As to the recent posting of the lyrics to Joni's unreleased songs- My plan has been (and still is) to post these lyrics plus the lyrics to 10 or 20 other unreleased songs on a page I'll design for the lyrics. This will go up sometime after the TTT release and subsequent promotion. Joni's lyrics belong on her homepage. Since Les mentioned the JMDL birthday, I should also say that it was three years ago on August 29th that I began the JMHP. It was a year and a day later that Les joined in by starting the discussion list, which has become the official list for JM.com, due to his efforts and methods of running the list by allowing us to decide the way that our community is run. I think if I share it with the list that things will be better. You see I was there, even though I didn't witness the actual tragedy. The weather was sunny, but the winds were strong. Large rollers on the water. Not enough to be real dangerous, cresting to the front of the boat, but large enough for those on the lake to take caution. We stopped along with others for a swim. The whitecaps sometimes splashed over the bow yet the anchor held firmly. There was a shout from the children in the boat. "She's gone over!" The swimmers were 50 feet from the spot of her entry, and some didn't hear the shouts of the children. I was at the back of our friend's boat, and started to swim back as quickly as possible when I heard the cries. They pointed port side to a spot midway up the boat. "She is going under!" they yelled. Finally, the men noticed and made their way back. They dove down to try to recover her, but we had anchored in 20 feet of water, too deep and dark at the bottom for rescue. We said our goodbyes knowing that she had given us joy just a few weekends earlier at the Garden. What a tragic way to end, in the cool, clear water of Lake Charleviox. Something like this is never easy. Now you can see why I have been so traumatized. The shirt that I loved so dearly was gone! Looks like I will be heading back to the website to order another one. Tip for the day: when boating in high winds always keep articles of clothing, like SIQUOMB T-shirts, off of the windshield. And it is with this thought that I'd like to share this moment ... A Visit to the Chinese Cafe The humidity hangs heavily in the St. Louis rush-hour air as I pull off the parkway and make the reflexive glance towards the gas gauge. Needing to stop, I pull into my neighborhood service station -- I say "service" station because this one's an architecturally quaint relic of 1950's whitewashed brick with a Spanish tile pediment. Only the prices on the sign indicate that a team of bow-tied attendants isn't going to pile out and help. So as I begin to pump the gas, the sound of an aging motor seasoned with music from an overdriven stereo catches my attention. Strangely silent in this interesting mix is the thundering bass that normally announces approaching vehicles in my neighborhood. I watch as a 1980s vintage Cutlass Supreme coupe pulls into the station. Both doors open and no less than 9 kids scramble out, untangling legs and arms from rear seat confines, laughing and smiling with voices that let me know theirs is a much larger and more magical world than the one I'm living in. If it wasn't for the redolent odor of gasoline, I'd swear that's ink I smell, not quite dry on their driver's licenses. They assemble for an impromptu group photo as Larry Klein's bass vamp fires up inside my mind. I guess I'm staring with a small smile at this point, having grown so fast, like the turn of a page. Guitars and pianos come in on cue off the bass just as they all collapse back into their car, bodies folding together in the classic origami that is the forgotten fire drill of the innocent. I catch my reflection in my rearview mirror, and think to myself, I look like my mother did, now, when I was those kids age. The die is cast -- The Chinese Cafe my only refuge. Into the tape deck it goes with practiced ease ... it's gonna take me a bit longer to get home tonight. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Aug 1998 10:13:25 -0400 From: Jerry Notaro Subject: Re: You can order Joni's new album Any plans in the works, Les or Wally, for a massive order for JMDLers? On the treadmill today, by the time "10th World" came on, I was really going and the drum beat was so loud in my head...it began sounding like my heart rate till I couldn't distinguish between the two.... As the drumming sped up so did I. (This song is a long one---I was panting---and the drumming became more complicated---at one point I could no longer figure out the beat)....I was sweating but kept increasing my speed, and I began to drift off, and the images I got weren't of orgasmic men, but instead I was transported to the French Quarter in New Orleans to a Jazz, Congo Square, a darkened, ritual space where the mystical natives were practicing voodoo, and the chicken squawking sounds reminded me of that movie where Lisa Bonet dances nude with a dead, bleeding chicken dripping all over the place. And in the background is Joni watching---wailing something foreign and haunting deep in her throat...... When the final drum sounds Im exhaused, and I reduce the treadmill speed to a much friendlier gate and Im off again to something more innocent and friendly with lots of sunshine and donkeys and carnivals----- as I welcome the sounds of "It's A Long Long Way From Canada" -They don't call me Don Juan's Fertile Daugher for nothin' -JulieZW, who is overjoyed because all three of my kids are back to school tomorrow----I AM FREEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Aug 1998 10:32:10 PDT From: "Don Rowe" Subject: Re: little joni grunts/Joni Workout JulieZ writes ... There is a cool web site www.bibliofind.com, where over 3000 used and new book sellers post their inventory. The site has several copies of The Rolling Thunder Logbook, most are quite expensive @$100-200 per copy, however...there are a few deals on there for far less. I just bought a copy for $15 from a little dealer in Flushing, NY. But - unlike yours, my story is silly and hopefully not offensive. When Princess Diana and Prince Charles were married I was pregnant with my 1st child. In fact, I was about to have him and was quite rotund. I live in a smaller city and things were getting boring that summer so we decided to have a small and tasteful/less soiree in honor of the Royal Couple. Several friends and I dressed up as various people in Charles and DI's life such as The Royal Bastard - Bonny Prince Joe, Margaret Thatcher, The Queen, and Elton John. (You get the picture?). I decided to wear a bright pink negligee w/ matching feather boa, a blonde bouffant wig and with 2 small poodles under my arms I went as British romance novelist and DI's Step-grandmum, Barbara Cartland. (She wears nothing but pink!) The food was Spam and Velveeta shaped in sculptures and the drink was cheap wine. News was so slow in Boise that we got covered for the 5:00 evening news! I only mentioned this as this is a sad occasion and I have 2 boys close in age to Diana and Charles and have always felt some strange affinity with them. Also, I remember that garden party as one of the highlights of my life and several years later did become a writer (although I do stay clear of the romance genre)! As a divorcee and single mom I have to remember to laugh, think of warm memories of the past and the people that have walked through my life, and look forward to better times and stay anchored in this very real and sometimes confusing present.
