I'm putting this down to give a taste of Sandy's best IMHO,
and because it somehow ties in with Martin L King
As gentle tides go rolling by,
Along the salt sea strand
The colors blend and roll as one
Together in the sand.
And often do the winds entwine,
Do send there distant call.
The quiet joys of brotherhood,
And Love is Lord of All.
The oak and weed together rise,
Along the common ground.
The mare and stallion light and dark
Have thunder in there sound.
The rainbow sign, the glended flower
Still have my heart in thrall.
The quiet joys of brotherhood,
And Love is Lord of All.
The words are by Richard Farina
But the song is Sandy's

Yes! In high school, I began my love for Pentangle, Steeleye Span, Sandy
Denny, Fairport Convention, and Amazing Blondel, just to mention a few. My
friends usually gave me a very strange look as their eyes rolled into the back
of their heads whenever I mentioned these groups. There is a great website
that has extensive information on almost every musical artist I have looked
up. Besides buying CD's, you can listen to cuts from most albums, there is a
biography on them, what decade they were active, and links to other websites
about them. (Yes, they cover Joni very well, including links to Wally and Les'
pages!) It's called The Ultimate Bandlist. Check it out at:

It just could be she learned it from being in the choir. I was in one
choir or
another half my life but as a "second sorpano" was always relegated to
singing
harmony. It gets to where you hear the harmony more than the melody in
a song
after awhile. My favorite Joni harmonizing of all is on the song "Long
Ago And
Far Away" with James Taylor. She is a master of harmony along with
everything
else, and it's always seemed to me that her melodies sound actually more
like
harmonies when you hear them (all that alternative tuning, no doubt).

well-rounded selection of early Joni.

I was in my local Tower Records the other day and noticed that a stack of
Hinton's book had just been delivered - good timing Tower. Apparently
the book is laughably inaccurate, but I spent a few minutes looking at
the pictures anyway. But he could'nt even get the pictures right. The
first one is supposed to be a picture of "Joni with her band in 1970".
Good guess Hinton, but she did'nt have a band in 1970. The people in the
picture are in fact members of Mathews Southern Comfort who when the
picture was taken where at number one in the UK charts with their version
Woodstock - which is still the best cover version of a Joni Mitchell song
after all this time.

Hi, Claud.
I am with you here. As a matter of fact, Jonatha's "PLUMB" CD is
my daily (and I mean daily) mantra for my take on a love being
lost. Her duet with Bruce called "War" (I think) is just gorgeous:
"Every morning I get up and I raise the flag
Salute the monument of those who gave their lives
And I guess war's OK...it's just a little inconvient
But it's better than a video game...better than the movies"...
I love how my favorite artists weave their glorious tapestries
of musical collaboration with other favorites.
I wish Joni would do it more, and maybe she is these days.

benefit, private function, or some other management issue beyond the
control of the real movers and shakers (the road krewe). So let me know.

Subject: Backstage Passes
Hello:
I acquired this book many years ago for 75 cents at a yard sale. The full
title is:
Backstage Passes - Rock 'n' Roll Life in the Sixties by Al Kooper with Ben
Edmonds.
Here is an excerpt:
Loose Ends, Rolling Stones, Folk Singers
How She Got Herself to the Garden in the First Place
"One night in the middle of the Blues Project, I was sitting in my favorite
bar in the Village, the Dugout. It was the best place to kill a summer's
night, and I always ran into a few friends I would miss while I was on the
road. This particular night I was sitting with a new-girl-in-town, who we
shall call Joanie.
Joanie had a crush on Roy Blumeneld, the drummer from the Blues Project.
Unfortunately for her, Roy had a girlfriend who was hip to Joanie and real
jealous of her. So, this chick is crying in my beer for about three hours,
and I don't mind 'cause she's real cute and nothing else is going on
anyway. So they're closing the bar and throwing us out and I offer to walk
her home. It was about a fifteen minute stroll, and it was a beautiful
summer's night. I was, in fact, homeless at the time, crashing out at Judy
Collins' apartment, and glad to have my mind taken off that situation.
When we got to her door, she invited me in to hear some of her new songs.
She was a folksinger, Canadian. Half of a duet with her recently divorced
husband, and they had achieved a mild popularity and a cult following in
various American border cities. She, being sorta pretty, had me bounding
up the stairs figuring if the songs were lousy, maybe I could salvage the
evening some other way. In a few minutes that became the furthest thing
from my mind.
Her songs were incredible and totally original, which was a surprise in
those days, but quite refreshing. She would finish one, and I would say
more, more. And she had enough to keep going for four hours, most of them
brilliant. One song especially killed me, and I thought it would be great
for Judy Collins, and a nice way to pay her for her hospitality would be to
turn her on to it. Being impulsive, I asked Joanie if I could use her
phone and I called Judy up. It was 5:30 A.M. by now, and she was sort of
pissed off.
"I have to get up soon and drive all the way to the Newport Folk Festival,
and I wanted to get some sleep for a change. I could hear this song when I
get back from the festival though, Al."
Bong! A great idea hits me. "Judy, why don't you, room permitting, take
this girl with you to the festival. She could play the song and others for
you on the way up and make your trip that much more pleasant. Then, being
that you're on the board of directors, you could see if maybe that could
fit her in the schedule somewhere to play, huh?"
Silence.
"Judy?"
"Kooper, you bastard. Yeah, I'll do it. Gimmee her number. Bye."
Just to make sure, I gave Joanie Judy's number and told her to call her in
a couple of hours. I split immediately 'cause I was exhausted and never
made it to Judy's place, preferring to actually crash on a bench in
Washington Square Park in the steamy, summer morning.
Well, as the saying goes, the rest is history. Joanie (Joni Mitchell, of
course) played at the festival (1967) and stole the whole show. Judy
eventually recorded the song I thought she would like, "Michael From
Mountains," and also had a huge hit with "Both Sides Now," another of
Joni's songs. Joni never thanked me, but when I heard the album "Lades Of
The Canyon" that was thanks enough. Maybe I should thank her.
Sweet Judy Blue Eyes
This ain't no funny story or starstruck kid here, just an appreciation of a
friend: Judy Collins. As I mentioned, I lived at her apartment off and on
in 1967. She was always helping somebody out, and she was the real New
York Earth Mother. If you were an up-and-coming writer, she would always
be one of the first to showcase your material. If you had a fight with
your lover, she would be the trusted confidante of both sides. Her
apartment was the social hub of folk music on the East Coast. Eric
Andersen, David Blue, Phil Ochs, Joan Baez, Mimi Farina, Tom Paxton, Joni
Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Donovan, Pete Seeger, Steve Stills (who wrote "Judy
Blue Eyes Suite" for her) would all have nothing but superlatives to say
about the lady.

My logic in giving him NRH was that I had already given him 'Blue' which
can be considered the pinnacle of Joni's 'early' period and 'Hejira',
the popular choice for the top of her 'middle' period. I thought NRH
would be a nice introduction to 90's Joni. I love TI but NRH is easier
to listen to IMO. I would hesitate to say which is the 'better'
record. With me it's a toss-up.

I agree that NRH is easier to listen to than TI and for that reason might be a
better choice for your friend. Although I love TI, much of that album can be
depressing and difficult to listen to, especially for a new Joni listener.
Personally, although I admire the genius of it, "Last Chance Lost" is
musically one of the most disturbing songs for me to hear. Because of that,
of course, I listen to it even more ...

My favorite on TI because the gorgeousness of it transcends the heartbreakingly
sad lyrics and melody. The song expresses utter futility, but its sheer beauty
also seems to provide a small balm of hope.

Deb M posted that she had typed up those obscure lyrics I mentioned earlier,
for the archives. Has anyone been able to find them? If not, I'll retype them
for the list.
As promised, here is the poem I found in my dust ridden songbook, titled The
Music Of Joni Mitchell:
THE FISHBOWL
1969
The fishbowl is a world reversed
where fishermen
With hooks that dangle
From the bottom-up
Reel down their catch
Without a fight
On guilded bait.
Pike, pickeral, bass-
The common fish
Ogle thru distorting glass
See only glitter, glamour, gaiety
Fog up the bowl with lusty breath
Lunge towards the bait and miss
And weep for fortunes lost.
Envy not the goldfish friend
Imprisoned in his golden scales
His bubbles breaking round the rim
While silly fishes faint for him
And sighing say
"Look there, I think
He winked his eye for me!"

really great time so i'm not just staring at the place where i sat in may just
crying my eyes out and no one could hear or care.
i met some elliott smith fans in line (most people were there for garbage.
and earlier, for korn) and turns out he (adam) is going the same day as me. he
also went to the show in may at the trou that i went to. we exchanged thoughts
on the new album (we both love it) and are looking forward to seeing elliott
again. he is a god (bianca told me not to have elliott be my god, let the
breeders be my gods...but they're just not ooomph like elliott is even though
i enjoy them.)
i also got tickets for paula cole at the troubadour on september 9th (two
weeks!). that'll be a great show, but listen: the show has been onsale since
july 16th...and paula can't sell out the troubadour? that sucks really. i love
paula. i was listening to her "bitch" songs alot in june.
but those are the concerts i'm going to in september. they're both going to

Jeremy sits in the sun
And he stares at the stripes on on the floor
>From the bars on the door
Thinking of rabbits he kept as a child
In a chicken wire cage
He remembers the rage of his father
The night he made his one call
The relative sranger who left him to fall
To the mercy of judges with no shield at all
Now he sits and he stares at the punishing wall.
Mary, sweet Mary, it's dark and it's cold
It's all of the stories you've ever been told
Keep the jar on the window, keep the lock on the door
Keep your mind on the man
Keep away from the store.
Jeremy picks up the crayon he saved
And he writes in the dark and he thinks of the park
And the flowers he gave to the girl with the bells
He remembers her smile
It was gone at the trial
Hear the footsteps of nightguards patroling the halls
There are coughers and talkers who don't sleep at all
Midst the curse words and worse words that someone had scrawled
Now he writes her a poem on the punishing wall.
Jeremy gentle, oh Jeremy kind
As you walk with the thieves and the killers
Believe that our numbers are growing
The change has to come
Put resentment aside
Don't turn bitter and die
I'm an ignoramus with sheet music; I hope I'm putting the Mary Mary part in
the right place.

All the tents are taken down now
All that's left is scuffled ground now
Still the magic echoes in the sand
Popcorn, popcorn, cotton candy
Now a stranger takes my hand; we smile

You must light the hearts of more than me
There's a girl at her window
Now she's trying to catch your eye
But oh, pretty stranger
You must keep on passing by
Moon in the mirror
I don't know you
Just a reflection
Of kisses and whispers and indigo skies
Moon in the mirror
Look below you
Moon's looking back
And they're loving and longing and telling no lies
Moon in the mirror
I will ask you one more time
Not for a reason
And not for a rhyme
But please tell me if you can
Have you seen a moonlit man?
He's so very like you
You could see him from afar
Perhaps he's misplaced moonbeam
Or a banished star
Moon in the mirror
He's so like you
Light up the room
For an hour; a smile or the beat of my heart
Oh how my heart tried to fight him
Fight against mirrors
Of moonlight or lovelight
You're lost from the start,

certain heather...
i'd kind of like to make it a late, long dinner (we do that a lot here).
several people are coming from out of town, i was hoping to do a field
trip to the metropolitan museum sat afternoon, the met's open quite late (9
pm). so my suggestion would be 9 o'clock dinner at tanti baci.
heather, would this work for you, or were you going to drive back to
hartford saturday? earlier dinner would be just great, too, but i was
hoping you'd be into the museum visit.
rickielee, who i'm excited to meet next week at ashara's will be down here
for roberto's visit. chilibri and mrs. chili have been wanting to visit
ny; i'm really looking forward to meeting the man who writes those posts.
and i greatly enjoyed meeting kay ashley last week, and want more of that
good conversation...
so let's do it. those that are in, email me, let me know if a late dinner
works, and i'll make a reservation tomorrow night.
