Dear Stevephoto of Mindspring,
Aren't Marsha and Patrick the epitome of diplomacy! I agree with every
word, but want to share my feelings too.
I've subscribed to the JMDL since Dec of 96, and it seems to me that there
has never been as much "JC" content on this list since plans for the "The
Garden" began. So rejoice and be glad. This is probably the best it is
going to get till TTT comes out.....well---- (unless Janet Reno herself
speaks up next with a stain to explain.......) Look at it this way, we're
here, so near, get used to it. (Hey, can I get credit for that slogan?)
Trust me honey, if you think this is bad, access years of JMDL
transcripts-----where **irrelevent** NJC topics dominated the list. If we
Joni fans had ourselves a good ol time hangin' in there---with our
irrelevent NJC life stories----way back when our Joni wasn't doin' a damn
thang---- we certainly wouldn't have lasted this long. I mean, how many
times can we dissect "Sweet Bird"? It's your turn to share your fresh
perspectives and musings. We need you, if not we get bored easily and
behave very badly as we go off on lots of tangents. (It's a rich exchange
it seems to me...)
Ok, everybody so get your mouses ready, roll up your sleeves, take a deep
breath and......scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll and
scroll and scroll
You know what this is all about...it's about the summer, and that garden's
ripe and juicy...Yep, it's just the summer in the young blood, ripe and
juicy in the young blood teasing to go down to ...
COTTON AVENUE
because
A red sun came rolling down a grey sky
And the frogs and dogs and night birds then
Started up singing sweet country lullaby
You see that patch of city lights-
Somewhere in there's Cotton Avenue-
That's where I'm going to take myself tonight
With a spit shine on my dancing shoes
(OH MY GOD, DON'T YOU JUST LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!)
I guess it's just the summer in the young blood
Ripe and juicy in the young blood
Teasing to go down to ...
Cotton Avenue
To hear the shiny shiny music
See all the shiny people dancing to it
Anytime you go to ...
Cotton Avenue
You see that summer storm brewing in the southern sky
By the time it hits here I'll be dancing high and dry
To rhythm and blues
On Cotton Avenue
Poor boys'll be hanging around outside in the street
They got all the latest words
They're dancing to the latest beat
While they're hustling and sizing you
On Cotton Avenue
If you got a place like that to go
You just have to go there
If you've got no place special
Well my dear
You just so no place ... special

have you noticed? there are "choir" songs like chelsea or carey or let the
wind and then there are "multiple Joni" songs, like blue motel or djrd
overture: different jonis following different melodic lines that now
converge, now diverge. and later, more or less with chalk mark, she started
the mantra background vocals [number one, beat of black wings, etc.] the
harmonies on c&s are the most challenging to the untrained ear: they're so
dissonant sometimes. on pirates and on the magazine, rickie lee jones uses
almost the same harmonies as found on c&s. i think. but i love rlj too, mind
you.
incidentally, everybody go buy your latest liz phair now! it's a terrific
album. don't miss it.

Yes yes yes, you reminded me of them, I had thought they were piano keys
being pressed, as in the piano keys themselves were clicking. aah a
revelation!
i've got another harmony highlight for you all: Joni at The Last Waltz!
Tell me there is anything better than Neil Young singing "Helpless"
(cocaine and all) and Joni in the background harmonisiing like nothing
else! i've always thought she looks remarkably like that long blonde
muppet from the Muppet Band, and the shots of her silouhette as she sings
Helpless only make this clearer. That muppet is meant to be Joni!

Hey Don --
If you like NRH, the limited edition is nice to have. I love the ritual
of opening the package by un-looping the string, gently holding up each
image, and then looking through the cards again as "Night Ride Home"
plays.....
