I have been on the list for probably six months now and I am still learning what some things are -- if it wasn't for Ashara, I would have no clue what the tape trees were. Also, I hate to say this, but I have been SOOOO behind on the digest this summer, and I just deleted about 5 or 6 that I only skimmed. So, I have no idea what this talk is of a cover story in Billboard about TTT. Did I miss it, or is it this week's issue? Also, does anyone want to get together on ICQ or IRC on the day that TTT is released and have some sort of "listening party"? Just a thought where we could all enjoy it together. I first got wind of Sandy from the Fotheringay album in late 1970. I had just seen Ms Mitchell cast her spell at the Isle of Wight and to hear another voice that could sound so true and use words so well was a heaven sent. I later had the privilege to see her in person at a little theater up in the Santa Cruz Mountains with Fairport Convention. They were doing a sound check before appearing in San Francisco. He then got onto a section where they were feeling a little fazed by the experience of doing these big big shows and then sneaking away like spies into these unmarked cars and travelling forever to these motels in the middlanowhere where they would relax. Then the reader got into the section about the Games Room, and I'll quote as much as I can.... Joni Mitchell was sitting on the floor, barefoot and cross-legged, writing something in her note book and occassionally looking over to Rick Danko.... Is this published at all? I remember reading a similar account of the Rolling Thunder Revue in a hardback book. With pics. It just highlighted for me really the synchronicitous(hehehe) journey we make thru this life. (She's mentioned, btw, most frequently in the Prince discussion group): "I'm writing a critical study that focuses on the way old influences new in Prince's SOTT. Basically, I'm looking for some assistance from you guys on where Prince's influences can be heard on SOTT. For example, James Brown's influence can be heard in "Housequake", while Joni Mitchell's influence is evident in "THe Ballad of Dorothy Parker." "At the end of "Ballad of Dorothy Parker" (you know, the break into the funky guitar) sounds a lot like Sly and the Family Stone - -I think "It" has a lot of similar sonic qualities to Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues" - that dark, airy feel that I can't really describe in words - -"Forever In My Life" has that Joni Mitchell feel too, especially as the song is fading out at the end." "From reading the various biographies on Prince, I don't recall any of them stating that he actually WORKED with Joni Mitchell. So imagine my surprise tonight when I was at Borders and picked up a biography on her, only to find out that in fact, they DID work together!! It didn't say exactly when, but I got the impression that it was around 1985-86, due to the verbage used to describe the period. "Psychadelic". And get this, she says that they "recorded tons of music together with Wendy and Lisa." She also spoke about the song he sent her called "U Are My Emotional Pump, U Make My Body Jump". (More than likely titled just "Emotional Pump") and how she couldn't sing anything like that. Throughout the biography, there were several references to Prince. It seems Joni has an unrelesed album as well, and they compared the situation to Prince's "Black Album".Gotta love those indexes! It makes researching so much easier. Just thought I'd share that." FROM A STREISAND LIST: " Add me to the list of Stoney End lovers. The album was Barbra's first > bonafide "pop" album. I'm a big Laura Nyro fan and HUGE Joni Mitchell > fan. I remember Barbra stating at one time how much she admired Joni > for her incredible songwriting abilities. I would love to see Barbra do > an album totally devoted to woman songwriters...she could do more Nyro, > Mitchell, Carol King, Diane Warren, and maybe some new female writers > like Sarah Macglaughin and Tracy Chapman." "For acoustic, Joni Mitchell is pretty hard to beat. Stephen Stills once >said, "No chick has a right to play guitar that well," or something along >those lines." "I am not Jack, nor do I fall under the mind bending gaze that he's perfected listening to those damnable Joni Mitchell albums. But please stop cross-posting as it begins heated arguments such as this one." "There are very very few artists who offer sustained quality & quantity in this field. Can you name any? The two that come to my mind are The Beatles & Joni Mitchell." "And I like Paul's solo work. He's just been listening to too much Joni Mitchell. I think he is doomed to become the next Chilton, though. Did anyone read that funny "Schlock and Roll" comic on this topic?" FROM A SOAP OPERA, (I think,) DISCUSSION LIST: "I was sitting at home after a sleepy day at work. Master Control Operator at a TV station and aspiring musician. It's not kind of complicated. I knew Trace left, and this is probably going to burn me alive, but no Jim? I'm not even going to ask about that, but it seems like almost all of the beloved cast I once knew had jumped ship like it was the Titanic. Well, we know what happened to most of the people who jumped that ship..... I yearn, people. I really do. I can't help it. It's nothing personal, but when I watched what remained of today's episode and sat through the end song.....well, let's just say that the end credits song always gets me. Years ago, when I was a 19 year old dunderhead and watching the midnight showing, that theme song was almost like the Star Spangled Banner to me. That was the end of my broadcast day. It's purely a want to relive the past. My God, nobody will ever know how much that show influenced my life. It was an awakening of the "weirdness results in creativity" philosophy that I took off and ran with. True, I would probably be making $100,000 a year in Wall Street and probably be getting more respect as a person had I not chunked my plan of being a stock broker, but that is so short term. I do all sorts of weird things like play in clubs with a guitar and get interest from people in the record industry now. Why? Because my approach is different, as I'm told. I define my stuff by what I do and what I like and it's paying off. True, you feel weird in the beginning going up in front of all those people and doing your thing not knowing if they will understand, but then you see that they do and you see that you got away with the biggest deal of the century instead of crawling on stage with your Joni Mitchell repertoire and wondering "gee, do they like me, or do they like Joni mitchell music?" I wish I could write to Joel since I know that his fruitcake vision is a lot to blame for it, but I read once that he hates to read fan mail, so I do a little celebration of this show and him publicly. Things you do in your garage and made out of household materials mean more than the result of some marketing research survey. For a while, I was following it just a little too closely. I wanted to produce wacky TV shows and be a standup comic. I even wrote sketches and tried to go for the outlandishly creative instead of funny. But, I couldn't sleep at night because even though I enjoyed the idea of this, there was something not right about it. I would think every once in a while "it's too bad I can't bring music to this since that is almost as important." Well, one day, I did. I sort of blame this show for it too, since it introduced me to Morrissey which is another chapter in itself. Anyway, as not to make this too personal, there is something sublime about that show that I want to reach for. It's those early days in college, sitting around at home on weeknights watching Gamera for the 5th time that shaped my life onwards" FROM A TORI LIST "So, I listened to half of it and taped the whole thing...haven't listened to part two yet. But basically they played a bunch of songs, had a quote or 2 and thn had the DJ guy related Tori's life. Now check out these screw ups. I mean, I can accept a bio with the occasional Tori blunder, but this is amazing: 1) Crucify EP has the song "Angie" by....Aerosmith? thats what he said. 2) They played A Case of You which in itself was pretty cool, but then he says that it's commercially unavailable, which I suppose technially is true now, but then he says....sit down for this... Tori Amos had Tent Reznor sing bvoc. on PAst the Mission. She is rumored to have been involved with Reznor and is rumored to have written this song for him!!!!!!!! Now THAT is a screw up. Hi, Julie and all. This would be good for Joni (and us), I think. But let me tell you what happened on the Gino Vannelli list. As his label and management "controlled" his website and did list it on his new release "Slow Love", more postings occurred on his site (not in the form of email like we have), and within 2 months, it was decided that there was too much posting of a "complaint" type, (usually about the accessability of recordings or the "form" of the posting software and difficulty following threads), and the fanpages were CLOSED! All photos we submitted were pulled, pictures we took of Gino performing, etc, and no trace of us remains on his site. This is an unfortunate result in that the label controls his site. I don't know that Reprise et al would publish a site they do not control. And seeing what happened to us Ginophiles, I don't think I would ever want a sterile, moderated, and resultant slap in the faces of fans to ever occur in the name of Joni. If the actual CD is identical to what the promo I have (labelled "Album Advance"), the cover is a B&W self-portrait of Joni with cat--it looks like the cat she dances with on the "Come in from the Cold" video. On the back is a painting I assume she also did herself, above a chest with a basket-floral arrangement and a (different) stretching cat. One of the things I like about the self-portrait is that she hasn't "airbrushed" the lines on her face to try to make herself look young. The Joni CD is GREAT. No time for a long review at this point, though. She's using that chimey guitar she has on the latest performances from the video tape tree--I guess it's through a synthesizer. As always, there's a lot of musical textures, layering of the sound. It grows better on repeated listenings--I've only heard it three times (THAT should tell you how busy I am now!) Unfortunately my CD came without liner notes or lyric sheet (I guess the first person to receive it still has that), so I don't know who's playing on it. There's a great sax player--wonder if it's Wayne Shorter again? I assume Larry's on there. I think Wally has this posted on the website; I need to look again. I REALLY like Man from Mars--the tune alone makes me want to cry. Face Lift is good too and I like what she does with her voice on Crazy Cries of Love--very sexy. Her voice is so expressive, she works it beautifully! The title track incorporates Blake's "Tyger, Tyger" with wonderful juxtapositions I won't give away. On a separate note: the Leonard Cohen quote below is from his song "Anthem" on the CD "The Future." That entire CD is a knockout. I highly recommend it if you don't have it. It would be great to have the sites listed on TTT, but not if it was going to screw everything up for those of us already involved. Perhaps Reprise could put a TTT promo page on their website that could maybe have a link to jonimitchell.com or something. This is a great community we have here...it would be a shame to kill it. BTW, it is nice to be back after months of drowning in digests, and able to be involved once again. I am reeeealy curious about the song "Taming The Tiger" now that I hear that its got "Tyger, Tyger" worked into it. I have been going through a huge Blake thing lately. Are you aware of any current release from him? Also, last night I got to attend the last US show of the Lilith Festival here in Boise, Idaho. The musicians were wonderful but I found myself wishing that Joni had been up there. I realize that Sarah McLachlan is trying to give exposure to up and coming female artists but it would've been nice to hear from some already established musicians like Etta James, Tracy Nelson, or Joan Armatrading (just to name a few). Paula Cole did actually do a cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene" that rocked but that was the only nod to the founding mopsthers. The encore was Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" which was wonderful but I again found myself wondering why the chosen encore was written by a man. One more little rant about the show and then I'll stop as I don't want to sound like a man-hating witch... I also was disappointed that Joan Osbourne was the only performer that had a female musician backing her on the Main Stage. Dar Williams and Patty Griffin had at least one woman in their band. Welcome, Steve. Interesting first post from a newbie on the net... ;-) Fortunately, you have stumbled upon a cybercommunity of Joniphiles. We are interested not only in what is new or old with Joni, but why we all love her music/poetry/paintings like we do, how she affects our sensibilities and life choices, and then we get the urge for sharing this... then folks start comparing notes and find commonality or differences and the threads of discussion spin out into lovely patterns.... then a few Joniphiles finally meet, delight in one anothers' company and want to share that... pretty soon hundreds know one another in various combos.... we share that....it becomes like a small town of highly specialized smartie pants posters....just wonderful. Some of the members get to do special things like attend Joni shows, give reports, take wonderful pictures and share their good times with us here in the box. Some even have VERY special moments like meeting our Joan, and share that with us, and it tickles us pink, because you see, we have come to know and love our lucky members so well from the above process, we vicariously experience and delight in their good fortune Joni-moments. Occasionally folks belch and fart about how all this wastes their precious time (mostly workers who are stealing time on the bosses' computers) and how there is just too much chatter on our lovely list... Wait until we get 1000 members here.....goody! You gotta love it, jump into the fray, post away, or lurk, lurk and sulk, post and sulk, throw hissies and leave in a huff, whatever your heart desires... or you can set your title filter up and not receive NJC (no Joni content) stuff, like a lot of people say they do, but they really don't because they secretly need to see our little cybercommunity in all it's glory. His newest album Charity of Night is a masterpiece and if you haven't already picked it up, get it along with the phenomenal live EP You Pay Your Money and You Take Your Chance which has the most riveting performance of Strange Waters. I've seen Bruce twice: once at the Bitter End in 1978 when Joe and I were a courtin, and then in 1995(?) when he played the State Theater in Ithaca. The Ithaca concert was a solo performance but when this guy plays guitar it sounds like there is a whole band behind him. But like our Joni, it's the lyrical genius that blows me away (plus this man is a spirit after my own heart). Other great picks by Bruce-Circles in the Stream, Dancing in the Dragons Jaw, Further Adventures of, Humans, Stealing Fire. I could go on and on ... Charlotte* I agree, I am sure most could cite JM as an influence, but she never seems to be included with the new female artists out there. It is almost like a then and now kind of separation. Like where is Bonnie Raitt and the likes? i wonder if this is intentional or what. Strangely enough it seems more likely that Joni would mingle with the young male musicians than the young female musicians. And she is definitely still in with the old boys club CSNY, Bob Dylan, etc... I wonder why that is? Also I agree seeing more female Backup musicians would be nice. I didn't go to the Lilith Fair, but I understand what you mean!
