Hi Kate and All,
We didn't sneak it in at all. We had the digital, the Fuji-Discovery,
and our old but trusty Pentax draped around our necks. No one said a
thing about them. But here is irony at it's best. We got busted for
food. Our cookies and bananas got confiscated. Than they decided to give
the bananas back. Stating that at least they were organic in nature,
fitting the spirit of Woodstock. Go figure!!

There may yet be other pics with more list members. We have not had a
chance to get them developed. The digital pics were so readily at hand
to view. I'm hoping and praying that one of us had the good sense to
take a few more pics of the JMDLers gathered. If any of them turn out
decent I'll snail mail them to Les for scanning in the hope that he will
be kind enough to add them to the page. So fingers crossed in the hopes
of a few more group pics.
Thanks all, for understanding that my only wish was/is to share. Les

Jerry, Ok, here are my Joni Mondagreens:
"Love came to my door With a sleeping roll" became 'Love came to my door
as a sleeping load.'
And "All the guilty people," he said They've all seen the stain-"
became 'they've all seen the strain.'
And the most universally famous Joni mondagreen has to be: "You're not
just a liberation doll,' instead of:
He says "Your notches liberation doll"

for this decade than any of the two previous. Sadly, Joni is nowhere to
be found in any decade's Top 20 ... so get out there list!

I'm reading this really great book right now called "High Fidelity" about this

to break up into little pieces? i identified immeadiatly. living off "blue"

best part of the book so far is when he says, "what came first, the music or
the misery?" i highly reccomend it.
Marianna, The next book on your reading list should be "About a Boy" also by
Nick Hornby. The boy in question is raised by his mother (suicidal) almost
entirely on Joni Mitchell's music! This causes him a few problems, especially
at school where he's regarded as a bit of a freak to put it mildly. I'm not
too keen on the ending but try it anyway.

An excerpt:
Like many skeptics, I had my doubts about how effective a Joni Mitchell
concert would be now that she is relying so heavily on jazz. Well, she
showed me and everybody else at the Greek Theatre last Friday that she is
still one of the most interesting and outstanding artists in contemporary
music with a show that was a sheer delight. Mitchell has lost most of her
commercial impact since turning to jazz after the biggest success of her
career, "Court and Spark." Friday night she proved she could cross over
musical styles and be just as compelling.

"Joni put together an interesting outfit songwise too, beginning with her
newest classic, Coyote, two years old now, but still fresh as ever. Her
voice was lovely and her guitar work was stunning and the audience really
just ate it up. Then Joni began the opening chords of another classic,

recognizable as Ms. Mitchell slipped into a trance and literally dove into

1986: Joni performs at Farm Aid in Champaigne, IL. From Wally's bio page:
The Farm Aid concert was held in Champaign, Illinois. Joni volunteered to
perform at the benefit partly because her mother had grown up on a farm in
Saskatchewan and Joni had always fancied herself settling down on a farm in
her later years.
List member David Rind writes:
"During the mid-80s, while she was not touring regularly, Joni occasionally
took the opportunity to appear at what she considered worthwhile benefits.
These included "Farm Aid" and "Amnesty International." Even though she
actually excelled at these events, they unfortunately left her with the
opposite impression - that her music was no longer valued. They thus served
to validate her decision not to tour."

1994: Today's San Diego Union-Tribune publishes an artilce on Joni called
"It's time to pay that debt to Joni Mitchell". It reads "She has been
forging an uncompromising trail through heavy underbrush for more than 25
years now, but when the time comes to talk about the pioneers who made the
current women-in-rock revolution possible, everybody is always forgetting
about Joni Mitchell."

"Joni Mitchell's Many Shades of Indigo" written by Timothy White. An excerpt:
"The title song of the new record comes from a conference of the Canadian
Council of the Arts that I spoke at in the early nineties" [Joni] explains.
"The name of the conference was 'Making van Goghs,' and they said they
wanted to focus on indigenous peoples, ethnic groups, and women. I opened

even have a tentative street date yet, will feature Sting, Elvis Costello,
Sarah McLachlan, Annie Lennox, k.d. lang, Janet Jackson, Etta James, and

1969: Today the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix printed an article entitled "Joni's
Love of Words Turns Into a $500,000 Bonanza." An excerpt:
"Less singer than songwriter, less songwriter than poet, she has come from
obscurity in the past two years to a prominence where practically everyone -
from Frank Sinatra to Johnny Cash - records her compositions and where her own
concerts and albums give her an income of $500,000 a year. "My mother
raised me
on words," she says. "Where other parents would quote from the Bible, she
would
quote from Shakespeare. She was a romantic woman. She encouraged me in all
those old-fashioned things. I kept pressed-flower scrapbooks."

1969: Joni and CSN perform the fourth of seven nights at the Greek Theater in

1986: (From Wally's bio page) "A Showtime series "Coast to Coast" hosted by
Herbie Hancock premiered [today]. Joni was a guest on that first show for a
jam
session with Herbie, Bobby McFerrin, Wayne Shorter, David Sanborn, and Larry.
The two songs they jammed on were Joni's compositions "Furry Sing the Blues,"
and a pepped-up latin-flavored version of "Hejira."

1994: (From Wally's bio page): [Today] Joni and Larry stopped by Santa
Monica, Ca. radio station KCRW-FM and taped a broadcast with DJ Chris
Douridas for his excellent series "Morning Becomes Eclectic." This
hour-long broadcast is noteworthy because of the stellar sound, and the
fact that Joni and Larry were performing together on the air for perhaps
the last time. In conversation, Joni spoke of their separation for the
first time, and said they were obviously still friends. Two songs of the
seven they performed that day have appeared on disc. "Moon at the Window"
has appeared as a B-side for Joni's "How Do You Stop" CD single, and "Just
Like This Train" came out on KCRW's "Rare On Air: Volume 2." The show was
broadcast on the morning of October 25th.

1996: On today’s episode of the CBS-TV series "Chicago Hope," Joni's song
"A Case Of You" was featured prominently. Dr. Diane Grad (played by actress
Jayne Brook) sang it to a small child being operated on by Dr. Billy Kronk
(played by actor Peter Berg). Billy asked Diane which Joni Mitchell album
the song was from, and she told him Blue. "Depressing" he said. "Good" but
"chick music" he called it. She told him that she had taken the album to
show and tell in fifth grade. "Serious child, weren't you" he commented. At
the end of the episode as Diane and Billy kiss goodbye, a verse from Joni's
original version was heard. "Oh, I could drink a case of you and still be
on my feet."
From Wally's bio page: http://www.jonimitchell.com/Rewards.html
1997:
The Detroit News publishes an article entitled "Song takes writer to Joni
Mitchell's old Detroit apartment". The author writes "I was surprised to
learn that she had moved to Detroit in 1965 after marrying local folk
singer Chuck Mitchell. Though successful musically, the young couple
separated only a year-and-a-half later. I wondered where they had lived
and if the building still existed. It seemed like a fun idea to track down
Joni's old haunts."

1978: Today's Berkeley Monthly publishes an article on the Bread And Roses
Festival, saying "For four years Joni has avoided the concert stage. Now
she wants to showcase her new album. She has brought an accompanist by the
name of Herbie Hancock to deal with her new Charles Mingus material. An
hour before she is to go on she tunes nervously downstairs with a pick
borrowed from a writer. She is small, almost crumpled, as worried, maybe,
as the second angel in a Christmas play."

1979: Joni performs at the Civic Auditorium in San Francisco today and
tomorrow.
On Wally's site, Jim Leahy writes his impressions of the two concerts. An
excerpt:
"The eerie thing about these two shows is how similar they are. By this
point in her career Joni had obviously learned how to put on a
professional, well-oiled show. What differences there are relate to
intensity of mood or focus, or to the soloists' improvisations. The crowd
at the second show definitely seemed rowdier than the one on the first
night -- although they did quieten down at all the right moments. As you
will see from the accompanying photos, on the first night Joni's hair was
all sensuous Dionysian locks; in the second photo her hair is tied up in a
school-marmish bun."

1979: Today's issue of Down Beat Magazine features an interview with Joni
in an article entitled "Joni Mitchell Makes Mingus Sing."
An excerpt:
"There was a lot of mojo in [Mingus'] life - there's a lot of mojo in my
life, too. He was very wrapped up with natural phenomena. And that's why I
think we all had a certain amount of faith in the possibility that he could
actually beat it. I always addressed myself to that possibility. If I
hadn't, I know the songs would have been much more directed at Charles,
like The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines would have probably had a different
lyric content, or Sweet Sucker Dance. Because when it came down to the
finished album, I thought, this is not a complete portrait of such a
complex person; I wished then that every song had been dedicated to a
certain aspect of his personality. Some addressed themselves directly; and
indirectly they all had something that was kindred with his way."
Read the entire article at: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/db790906.htm
Also, Rolling Stone reviews "Mingus" today, saying "That's it - clawing at
walls, challenging the implacable. Joni Mitchell keeps asking the hard
questions, touching nerves. And the pressure she applies is increasingly
brutal, increasingly deft. It's been a long time since her songs had much
to do with whatever's current in popular music. (She would prefer we call
them art songs.) But then, she doesn't so much come on as an outsider, but
as a habitual nonexpert."

1968: According to Ken Garner's book "In Session Tonight" (BBC Books
1993), today Joni recorded for John Peel's Radio 1program 'TOP GEAR.' The
program was broadcast six days later. Joni sang Chelsea Morning, Galleries
(sic), Night in the City, and Cactus Tree. Joni was booked for several
other Radio 1 sessions during tours in 1968 and 1969, but all were
cancelled for various reasons.
1985: The Alberta Reporter ran an editorial cartoon today with a likeness
of Joni. Wally describes the situation on his website: "On what is called
The Sunshine Coast near Vancouver, where Joni has had a house and property
since the early 70's, a salmon fishing company had begun to build a huge $2
million plant. The other property owners, Joni's neighbors, asked her to
join a protest against this enterprise that they believed could destroy the
natural state of affairs in the area. Joni spoke to the press from her home
in L.A. and said: "I thought I'd purchased a piece of wilderness, but it's
being corrupted by industry." The Alberta Report newspaper took the side of
the hatchery reporting that it would bring hundreds of jobs to the
population who was heavily unemployed, and they claimed that Joni was not
really a current resident and was rarely even in B.C. The salmon company
complained that this was a case of a Hollywood celebrity trying to smear an
honest fish business."

1994: From Wally's page: "[Today], Joni was the only performer in a
special 90-minute edition of MuchMusic's "Intimate & Interactive." This
show is probably the best and certainly the longest appearance Joni has
ever done on TV."

Oh, my God, I can't believe it, but a friend just sent me the promo release
of Joni's new CD! It arrived at work, and I'm taking it home to listen to
it. At first I thought it was one of those "teasers" they give away at
record stores to promote it, but no, it's the actual album. A Joni
self-portrait with cats on the cover, B&W--it's the real deal. I feel kind
of guilty not waiting till next month like everybody else, but shoot! I
missed all her recent concerts.
I love the reviews posted on the site and the wonderful pictures of Joni.
Thank you all for doing that. It killed me that I was so close to the
concert--in Middletown, NY-- and couldn't go because my husband's parents
50th wedding anniversary was that night!
Sure do hope to see her on an upcoming tour, though...

Ric, when Annie Lennox was last in the public eye she was about to take
extended maternity leave from the music biz, as I remember, so a comeback of
some kind may be a while coming.
If/when she decides to make more music she might do best to start promoting
somewhere other than the UK. British journalists can be a pretty sour bunch
and the press were carping at the fact that she consistently romped away
with. "best female artist" awards and took this to be an indictment of the
sterility and lack of invention of the UK music scene. Ho hum.
While on the subject of somewhat forgetten singer/songwriters with excellent
back catalogue can anyone enlighten me with any news of the excellent Aimee
Mann?
This is all a bit short of mentions of JM nd no longer a legitimate reply to
Ric, but I'll carry on anyway. Apologies if I'm breaching ettiquette.
I too am a JM group newbie like the recent "rubber beans" contributor. Sadly,
I can't offer a similar contribution to light up anyone's day. I'm similarly
perplexed by some of the acronyms - can someone tell me what "Siquomb" stands
