And it is her best. It's so nice to hear her turn her talents on a world that
exists outside her pretensions. I highly recommend it, even if you've not
liked Tori before.
But, thanks to a package just arrived from Music Blvd., I've discovered that
the actual album of the year thus far is:
NP: Liz Phair, _whitechocolatespaceegg_
I am finally blown away by a 1998 record! As much as I love _Ray of
Light_, I was getting a little dispirited that the best record of the year was
merely a better-than-average turn by Maddie. Thank you Liz! The
melodies, the harmonies, the production, the sprawl, yum yum yum.
And I've only scratched the surface of the lyrics. BUY THIS ALBUM.
Incidentally, her first record, a classic, is available from Music Blvd.
for a mere $8.33 right now. Use one of those virtual coupons that
appeared here and get it for free.

"I've thought about this too. Can you alternately tune a violin? A bass? Any
other stringed instrument?"
Alternative tunings are helpful when trying to voice chords that are difficult or impossible to
execute in a traditional tuning. Since bass is generally a one note at a time instrument, it would
not be helpful or practical to use alternate tunings. But since Joni is a rhythm guitarist who
speaks in chords, alternate tunings greatly expand her range possible chord voicings.

I was there too, and was stunned by Amelia. People didn't clap right
away when she finished, and I remember sitting there, not breathing, not
moving, amazed. She backed out of the spotlight, playing the final
notes. In my memory it was the last song she sang that night, but it's
in the middle of the setlist -- did it just end the first half?
Another strong memory is my boyfriend urging me to go down toward the
front to see Joni closeup. He was there really to see Jaco and Pat
Metheny, but he must have seen my crazed look. We weren't too far away
so it would have been possible, and I remember really wanting to go down
front, but feeling afraid to get that close.
It was a wonderful night, beautiful weather, happy people all over the
place, fantastic music.
YES, VISIT AGAIN, JONI. WE'RE WAITING. SEE YOU SOON (strong
visualization here).

It is really fantastic, as have been all of your accounts of the day. (I still
can't get over Joni coming out and choosing to snap the pic of the jimdlers -
hey - let's get that one of her snapping on the page, too!).
We've really had an amazing Joni year so far and it is wonderful to hear
accounts coming in from all over the place right here in our little group.
Hoping the Floridian members are doing O.K. with that big hurricano offshore.
And welcome home to Mariana!
