I've been hearing more and more about the guitar Joni is using lately
and how it stores her 50+ tunings. It's amazing to me! I wonder if
this is something Jazz musicians do often (the alternate tunings) ....
does anyone know? I've been experimenting with alternate tunings myself
and find that it lends itself to a more diverse folk or alternative rock
sound, but it's interesting to me that with Joni's jazz bent, it's
something she uses so much.

On Friday night, I was swinging a carrier bag about. The next thing I
knew, John had collapsed to the floor. I sat him up and saw a huge black
lump on his head. I was very frightened and confused cos I didn't know
what had happened. It seems the carrier broke at the bottom and the
Haagen-Dazs(beligian choc) had come flying out and hit him straight in
the forehead. So we spent the next few hours in the accident and
emergency of the local hospital. He is alright tho i think getting
annoyed that I keep asking him if he is alright evry 5 mins. The
casualty nurse could barley contain her laughter. Whilst I can see the
funny side, I don't feel it yet. I came so close to killing him it is
still frightening. Imagine, 6ft 1" and felled by a pot of ice cream.
I didn't eat the Haagen-Dazs.

JoniFilmLovers,
I want to take Vincent Gallo to lunch....that's how much I enjoyed
"Buffalo 66," which Gallo wrote, directed and starred.
(You’d probably recognize Vincent Gallo, even if the name doesn’t ring a
bell--he’s the skinny, lizardy looking Calvin Klein model with piercing
blue eyes, who was part of cK's "hip-homelsss-and-hooked-on-heroin" photo
shoot campaign. Turns out he isn't just a street model, but an accomplished
painter, actor, and musician who was part of the 80's NY art/punk scene
where he was pals with the late Jean-Michel Basquiat. This movie is a
creative yet quirky mixture of raw, gutsy scenes, with intriguingly bizarre
dysfunctional family tirades, and overlapping neuroses from the lead
character, Billy Brown. Gallo who plays Billy Brown, is the most
interesting character I've seen at the movies all year. Gallo's, Brown
managed to miraculously combine affectations of a working-class Italian
Woody Allen/Albert Brooks with a little Charles Manson, Al Pacino and Bruce
Springsteen thrown in. The honesty of his writing in portraying the humor
in the despair and disfunction of working class Italian Americans was like
nothing I have ever seen captured so realistically on film. (Angelica
Houston's performance is phenomenal as his Buffalo Bill's addicted mother.)
For me, it was gut-wrenching and moving as I lost myself in Gallo's
soulful performance as a bewildered, neurotically troubled---yet endearing
man who is ready to explode. There’s another moment that’s unlike anything
I’ve ever seen in amovie: As an actor, he has this unique way of combining
wit with quirky banter, where he manically repeats the same phrases over
and over. In one funny scene, he shoves the Christina Ricci character into
one of those cheap photo booths to take some photos for his parents. Trying
to get the kidnapped Ricci to convey a look of adoration for him to
(impress his parents for future christmas cards,) he orders her to act as
if, “We’re the couple that spans time together. Here we are, spanning
time…” he keeps repeating. And, as the photo is about to be taken, “Let’s
span time. we are spanning time.” She makes the mistake of kissing him and
he goes ballistic, because he can't handle affection. He's never been loved.
It's the oddest yet funniest love story in years _julieZW

I have a limited experience with open tunings. I love them mainly because
they set me up with a certain musical "flavor", if I may say it this way. So
if you have a tuning that inherently sets you up with a 9th or 13th sus
whatever cord - something more jazzlike, I feel it is a lot easier to find
other jazz tinged cords without putting your fingers through contortions. In
regular tunings, a lot of your jazz cords give you a somewhat less open
sound because you have to fret a lot of strings. Since Joni's playing, as
far as I can judge, is a combination of ringing and dampening (more
percussive) sounds, these open tunings just lend themselves to her melodic,
jazzy, and unique way of playing. If it weren't such a pain to re-tune a
guitar into a variety of tunings I would love to play most everything in an
open tuning myself. If I ever have the money I certainly would buy one of
those digital guitars. Thank God for technology or else Joni might not be
out playing like she has been recently!

Subject: Re: 50+ tunings
I think it is feasible for any instrument, however, the neck and body of
these instruments are designed to remain stable under a particular amount of
string tension. Also the intonation of an instrument (playing in tune up
and down the neck) is affected by the thickness of strings used (the gauge)
and by the tension of the string. Therefore if you keep a guitar in one
particular tuning one should set up the intonation based on that tuning. If
this particular tuning is not too terribly different in tension (lets say a
G- tuning D-G-D- G-B-D vs standard E-A-D-G-B-E) it shouldn't affect your
instruments neck that much (this is in regards to a good guitar - I don't
know how quickly a non standard tuning on a violin would affect your neck!)
But you can see that if you use a C - tuning or a variety of different
tunings and constantly change the tension on your neck, you are bound to run
into serious problems with your instrument. It is best to store an
instrument with the correct tension and just change the tunings as you need
them when you play.

Lydia van Dam sings Joni Mitchell
Thursday night the 20th of August, Lydia van Dam sang Joni songs at the
Vondelpark.
Every summer there are free concerts and performances at the Vondelpark,
Amsterdam's main park, on two locations. This was the little one, a
bandstand situated in a little pond. Across the water, people sat on chairs
or on the grass to listen.
Lydia van Dam is a Dutch jazz singer. In the past she sang with big
orchestra's and toured in Europe and Japan. She also performed at the North
Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, The Netherlands, in '97.
On Thursday she played with Sebastian Altekamp on piano and Sven Schuster on
(big)bass. They usually perform with a drummer and a saxophonist (the Lydia
van Dam Group), but due to the measures against noise nuisance in the park,
they had to play with the three of them.
The group recorded 2 CD's: Evidence (1995) and Star Jive (1997).
They played two sets; the second one was shorter, because of the increasing
chillness at the park. Most of the songs were Joni's, but not all. Lydia
introduced each one of them.
They performed:
All I Want
Shadows and Light
River
People's Parties
Be Cool
Both Sides Now
The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines
People clapped and yelled for an encore. We'll do another one, Lydia said,
but unfortunately it was not a Joni song.
The songs were very jazzy versions of Joni's originals. The second set had
more swing. Lydia has a great voice, although on the whole I found this
performance a little bit boring. But hey: 150-200 people and a couple of
dogs had their little day at the garden.

The album also features Mark Isham and Julia Fordham and is produced by Larry
Klein. I was able to advance order it through CDNow for $12.99.
On another note (pun intended) I heard a clip of the Brian Blade Fellowship

you would like. I am definitely intrigued in hearing these tapes. they sound
like a neat collection!
So I'll get back to you on this when I am certain of what I would like from
you. Thanks again for offering!
Claud (9) :-)
P.s. Do you have a preference regarding tapes (or a recommendation) ?

Hi everyone-
While searching for some Joni *tapes*, I found a halfway decent page on
tape trading. You can post your list of tapes, a request, or hook up with
someone and trade. They mostly specialize in the Dead, Phish (Yippie!),
Dave Matthews Band, and most Dead lookalike bands. There's also a FAQ on
the terms in tape trading as well.
I was thinking about starting a Joni category, but it costs $100, and beats
me what the heck that pays for. Best be sticking with the tape trees we got
here!

When I was in Quebec last year and needed petrol, I was confused as to which
was unleaded. The garage guy only spoke French. Then I remembered Sans meant
without so I chose the petrol pump that had Sans included in the wording. As my
car didn't break down, I guess I was right!

I have the Phillips, and it's great. Makes a fine player as well as long as
you don't need a changer. Doesn't have "random" or shuffle modes, but then
again it's $600 and it records CDs. Only problem: will not make a digital copy
of recorded material with copy protection code on it (SCMS). But it will make
an analog copy, and it will still sound good.

able to listen to music while reading and writing email. I am not so talented.
We have a few others from Michigan here (me included). Where abouts are you?

NP I figured last week means Now Playing (it took me a while!)..as in what
music/song is on in the background. I'm in a scungy computer room at
University so there's never any music on here so I guess for me it should
be Nothing Playing. I think we should have a new one which is Not
Playing.......
Helen.
N(ot)P: Michael Bloody Bolton!
i now wait for an onslaught of offended people mail. (OPM?)
