In fact, we should all plan on phoning our local radio stations starting at least a week or two before the album's release and requesting songs from TTT. FYI- At the "Day In The Garden" show, during the song "Hejira," Joni changed the line "Strains of Benny Goodman coming through the snow and the pinewood trees" to "I thought I heard Mark Isham blowing through the snowy trees." We Joni-philes have an abundance of things to look forward to during the next few months. Foremost, of course, is the September 29th release of Joni's new album, Taming The Tiger, but there are other wonders awaiting us. On September 15th, Kyle Eastwood (Clint's son) releases his debut album, From There To Here (Columbia), which features a version of the Marvin Gaye song, "Trouble Man" with vocal by Joni; On October 20th, Herbie Hancock releases his new album, Gershwin's World, including Joni's take on the classic "The Man I Love;" In November we should have the first showing of Joni's TV special, whether it be on PPV, PBS or VH-1; due before Christmas is a new album from The Cheiftains entitled Tears Of Stone, with Joni contributing a new recording of her song "The Magdalene Laundries." Oh, one more thing- on September 22, Joshua Redmon is putting out his new album Timeless Tales (For Changing Times) with a instrumental cover of Joni's song "I Had A King." Wow! The rest of 1998 is going to be a feast, isn't it? I feel like it's been a little disrespected. You answered my initial question about "taming the tiger" so I was feeling the same way about the responses, like, gee guys, we've got this Buddhist sereneness happening and then, spanking the monkey? polishing the carrot? punching the clown? . . .but by the time it got to jerkin the gherkin I was LOL (yeah, merely laughing out loud before you creatively sexy phrasemakers get started). And, after all, this is the Joni list and everything she does is complex, and she IS obvious about enjoying carrots. Taming the Tiger as her reference to meditation appeals to me though, mostly because so much of her past work is about her over-analyzing mind, unbridled desires and resulting pain, and now she seems so joyful and comfortable with herself. Then again, there's nothing in the lyrics that directly mentions Buddhist meditation, so who knows? In March Joni was asked by Chris Douridas in the KCRW interview what her meaning was for TTT, and she said the tiger represented show business/the music business...she mentioned nothing about Buddhist philosophy relating to this particular song, although we know she ascribes to Buddhism in her own way, and didn't she list the "I Ching" as her favorite reading at the moment in some other past interview? We have found several "borrowed" elements in Joni's work throughout the years, and I can imagine her doing it with TTT and yet not making it so obvious an admission. If she starts writing songs like "A Tricycle for Marlin" then we will know for sure! ;-) Marsha ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Aug 98 14:26:55 GMT From: kg@ibm.net (Kenny Grant) Subject: Re: JM Stuff Hey Wally, Joni covering "The Man I Love" on a Herbie Hancock album...I have "pictured" her singing this song just about every time I ever heard it! Of course, the site is nowhere near as exhaustive and detailed as Wally's, but it's extremely funny for those who are familiar with the band's music, and most of it is written by the artists themselves! (How cool would it be to be able to interact with Joni in this manner?) A sample of their humor and also relevant to this list is the following piece I stumbled across while reading their thoughts connected with their inclusion into the R&R Hall of Fame. This is a point made in a letter to Jann Wenner & the Hall boys which is cleverly disguised as a plea for themselves to become inducted: "You may be aware that, like Joni Mitchell, we have mounted an exhaustive search for any long lost female love-children of ours who may be out there somewhere, working away in anonymity at some modeling agency or as prospective starlets or whatever. If either one of us (meaning Walter Becker or Donald Fagen) strikes paydirt in this department, you can bet that we will not be available for the induction ceremony, any more than Joni was." I was thinking CPR would be a good opener for Joni. We know there are mutual fans of both Crosby & Joni. Here's hoping there's nothing seriously wrong. I don't know how good a combo it would be but selfishly I would also like to see Cowboy Junkies on the same bill with Joni. I saw them last Sunday and I'm even more impressed with them now. They played a fairly small venue here in Seattle, the Moore Theatre which doesn't have a bad seat in the house but does have fantastic acoustics. The sound was great, the band was tight and Margo Timmins was very impressive. She has a wonderful voice, deceptively soft but capable of great power with the appropriate song (kinda like Joni on 'Slouching'). Michael Timmins writes some of the best songs I've heard (outside of what Siquomb writes). The lyrics have a lot of depth and I think his sense of melody improves with each record. He's also very impressive with the guitar. After having seen them perform live I've been listening to their latest 'Miles From Our Home' with new ears and it's fantastic! I highly recommend them to anybody who loves music with some depth to it. They won't disappoint! Hello to all Gardeners, Greetings from Holland! Well, I made it back home after what has been an amazing trip to America. I have had the time of my life, seeing 4 Bruce Hornsby shows, Emmylou Harris, Nathalie Merchant and Sarah McLachlan at Lilith Fair, Donovan, Richie Havens, Lou Reed, and of course, the main reason for this trip, Joni.... I can't tell you all enough how much I loved seeing her from so close, hearing her and the band perform these 15 songs with so much passion - it was an incredible afternoon and I am still on cloud nine, refusing to come down... it's hard to organize my feelings and put them to paper, so I guess I shouldn't try. If people ask me why I enjoy her music so much, I always answer that she makes me very happy and very sad the same time. Well, on August the 15th, she made me more than happy for 77 minutes long - or should I say 77 minutes short? Yes, it was too short, but these 77 minutes I will treasure for the rest of my life. I had tears in my eyes and shivers down my spine right from the beginning until the moment she walked off stage with that unbelievable cool swing this woman has... Joni, it was a long journey, having to fly in from Holland, and it set me back considerably, but expect me to be there again as soon as you will step onto a stage in the near future - you were absolutely amazing!! I just picked it up this evening; great interview. She has such a truly amazing mind; just all over the place. One moment she's quoting Nietzsche (!), and the next she's quoting a book on horoscope... Most people would find those two belief systems in conflict (I'm fairly confident Nietzsche would have peed all over the notion of pre-destiny that belief in horoscopes require), but in Joni's world, there's room for both. By the way. This was my first time in the new "Borders books and music" store here in San Antonio. What a cool store. Just to give you all a bit of background info - well I guess to not bore you - all you really need to know is I am a huuuuuuuuge Joni fan ever since I heard her for the first time in 1978. I was 14 years old and a budding musician. I just thought she was the shit (pardon the expression!). I still feel the same 20 years later. I like many other artists, but I can honestly say Joni's music and lyrics to me have always been the cream of the crop. Reading around your Joni discussion and cafe site (I don't have all the acronyms down yet) I know most of you feel the same. So anyway, I am truly amazed at Wally's beautiful, in depth site and all the other wonderful contributions. I really dig some of the illustrations of Joni. And, I read about the Jonifest - boy what a bummer that I didn't know about this site a year ago. You guys obviously had a blast. As a newbie receiving all this e-mail, I am a bit overwhelmed mainly because I feel clueless about some things. I am sure this will improve as I keep up with all the messages. Can you please fill me in what tape tree seven is? Are you guys sharing, trading tapes or videos etc...? Also are you planning another Joni fest? I also have to tell you that over the years, I have tried to suppress my Joni "whatever you wanna call it" because I felt kind of funny being such a fan. As a musician, I found myself so strongly influenced by her that I almost had to stay away from absorbing too much of her. Although, her creativity with words and music has always been a yardstick in my mind - something to strive for without losing my own identity. (Does this make any sense to anyone, especially those of you who also play music?) My own repertoire includes a handful of Joni songs, however, I feel awkward if I play more than one or two of hers in a typical performance setting ( just to explain - I don't play big time - mostly local bar gigs and festivals). To read about your Jonifest was like - wow! I would love to sit around with like minded spirits and totally indulge myself in singing her songs with others and not feeling like I've lost my "rubber beans". ( just to explain: I was born and raised in Germany. My English wasn't so great when I first listened to Joni, so when I first heard the line ... raised on robbery... Well, there were a couple of sequences with our Joni, including one with some unflattering angles, showing the older side of her beautiful 55 year face. > It will be repeated tomorrow (Sun) at 3:30pm eastern. There's also an edition of ShowBiz on CNN at 3:30 am edt that I caught the tail end of earlier. There's something about the Garden. I'll tape it, too It was fantastic at the Garden. It was the concert of a liftime. To have been that close for a Joni performance, and a perfect one at that, was just wonderful. It literally took my breath away and I broke into a cold sweat and grew very lightheaded early in her set. Had it not been for the quick thinking of our jmdl nurse, I may not have survived the excitement, literally :-) Thank you Mendi This is truly a magnificent community we have here, you know.
