But, I am so angry at the press and congress for playing this up, so many of them are living in glass houses. While I am sad that this whole thing happened, I still think that Bill Clinton has been a far, far better president than Bush or Reagan. Reagan played the politics of division really well. The eighties were really horrible years politically, similar to the fifties. Or did we forget already? There is a terrific review of my favorite non-joni album on page 100. It is an album called "Tropicalia" and is a collection of simply the most amazing songs I have heard this year. The album came out in the sixties in the heyday of the tropicalia movement in Brazil. It is hard to describe, like DJRD, and I had a similar experience when hearing these albums for the first time. They both brought me to a new and magical musical territory that I did not know existed. I think the NY Times also reviewed this album and compared it to suddenly discovering Sgt Pepper today, or something like that. If you are getting a little tired of American/English rock and wants to experience something new, I highly recommend giving this a try. I believe it is still available at http://www.dustygroove.com/. Speaking of DJRD, still my all-time favorite album by far, there is a great review from BAM magazine on Wally's site if you want to read the complete article. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Aug 1998 09:40:09 -0400 From: Marsha Subject: Marking my calendar in the South Shawn Colvin is confirmed for an appearance Oct. 28th in Atlanta. Among other things, Chuck Mitchell is paired with John David Marion performing an amazing combination of music and theatre, in full costume, with Mr Mitchell acting and singing the part of Stephen Foster and Mr Marion as Mark Twain. I recall him (Chuck) asking me (a former English major) if I knew if Foster and Twain had ever actually *met*. I didn't (and still don't) know. The thing about Reagan was that he was already so darned old, it was easy to believe that he perhaps didn't remember ... and look at how often he was sleeping during Cabinet meetings! Then it turned out that he did indeed have Alzheimer's ... and that made it sadly more believable, probably even true. I never could understand why the hell we allowed such an old geezer to be elected in the first place -- I don't mean to undermine the wisdom of the elders, but so many people used to chuckle at how ancient the men running the USSR were ... then we turned around and elected Reagan! I believe that it's just as important to have a maximum age limit as it is to have a minimum age requirement to be President. Billy Boy is only 52, so it would be difficult for anyone to believe that he doesn't remember things no matter how many women there may have been ... with an ego the size of his, he probably takes great pleasure in remembering them well! Joni answered your last question in an interview: "...the guy that was drunk in the lobby singing comes up to me and says, "I have a tape of some wolves." And I say to him, not even realizing how profound it is, "Oh, I'm looking for a tape of some wolves. I'll write down my address and you send it to me." He said, "No, I mean, I've got it on me." So I said, "Okay," and he produced this box of tapes, all homemade with labels on them, and we thumbed through it. It was all African animal sound effects. Well, the very last entry was wolves. So he loaned me his tape recorder, I put the tape on, and it was a cycle of a wolf—it starts off with the lead wolf, and then you hear yipping of pups and female voices, you know? And then he goes, "Aaaooo-aaooh-ahh." Like, the same yelp, but one note up higher in the scale. And then the yipping of the pups, and the females. And the thing was looped about four times. Well, the first time I did "The Wolf That Lives In Lindsay," I just hit the button right at the beginning, picked up the guitar, and uncannily, it was the perfect key." Crosby, 57, best known as part of the 1960s-'70s soft-rock trio Crosby, Stills and Nash, was not hospitalized but was being ``closely watched'' by doctors at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center, said Bobbi Cowan. ``It could just be the onset of the flu, but whatever it is, if you've had a liver transplant, they have to watch you very closely,'' Cowan said. ``David has courted disaster before in his life.'' Asked if the fever and infection were related to the transplant, Cowan said: ``Everything David goes through at this point is connected to that.'' Crosby was a founding member of the folk rock band the Byrds in 1964. He quit the band in 1967 and teamed up with Stephen Stills and Graham Nash the following year. They were joined by Neil Young in 1969 and the group performed that year at the Woodstock Festival. Crosby spent time in a Texas prison during the 1980s for drug and weapons convictions. His liver transplant generated controversy over suggestions by some that he was given priority because of his celebrity, despite the fact that he had been a drug and alcohol user. Crosby had been scheduled to perform with folk singer Pete Seeger at the Clearwater Festival in Sandy Hook, N.J., and at another festival in Beacon, N.J., this weekend. The first encounter with this station really made an impression on me*, and now I seek it out whenever my wheels get close enough. If you go to their website ( http://www.wfuv.org/ ) you'll see that the station's listeners placed 4 of JM's works in their "Americana Top 50 Albums" (2. Blue, 9. C&S, 35. LOTC, & 43. Hejira). According to the same site, JM's music will be featured on 10/28/98 as the 3rd ranking "Music Master" (by listeners (following Dylan & the Beatles)). And I say to him, not even realizing how profound it is, "Oh, I'm looking for a tape of some wolves. >> I didn't know George Winston was a drunk.
