wally and everyone,
i am so glad to hear this news. i'm just loving this song, both the studio
version and the terrific live versions from the recent tape tree.
like many listers, (except for sons of the pioneers fans) this was the
first TTT song i heard (as love's cries). i wasn't quite convinced. it
was pretty but it seemed similar to facelift, musically, and even a little
bit generic. and though i think my ear for rhythm is pretty acute, in a
lot of these joni 12/8 shuffles i don't really groove until there's
production. none of the live versions of cherokee louise match the album,
IMO. the rhythm makes the song even more powerful.
when we first heard the studio version of crazy cries from the kcrw show,
there was some discussion about the changed chorus, and some who really
thought it was a loss. the change (and the brilliant studio production)
immediately pushed the song into favoriteland for me and this shows no sign
of fading. when i was in la i sang it in my car every day.
can it be a successful single? i barely listen to radio these days, but it
certainly seems accessible, just so warm and catchy. i was not a fan at
the time, but i remember just loving 'you turn me on' when it was a single.
the attraction seems similar.
i can't imagine hearing it in so many public places this fall that i grow
tired of it. i WANT to hear it everywhere. SINGLE, SINGLE, SINGLE.

Hi everyone,
Joni's new album "Taming the Tiger" is now confirmed for release on
September 29th in the U.S., and September 28th elsewhere in the world.
The first single will be "The Crazy Cries of Love," which would've also
been my choice for a single from the album. Soon!
Later,

Hey you JMDL'ers!
I've been working on making copies of Tape Tree #7 for folks for a
couple of weeks and I almost have one set done.:D It's 5 tapes long of
course.... Anyway I wanna say that I love the title track, "Taming The
Tiger"! The fade out is so beautiful. It's a slow fade on a beautiful
melody. It's like Hershey's chocolate syrup at the bottom of an ice
cream bowl... It's sweet and each spoonful gets smaller and smaller but
it still stays sweet until it's all.... gone.
I'm sure each person will have a favorite. It will certianly whet the
appetite of any Lister.

great to hear the reports on the garden. wish i could have been there -
sounds like y'all had a great time AND a great view! very cool. i did get to
see lou reed last week in a small club & he was fabulous. he played songs
from all periods of his career (though nothing from "new york", boo hoo - i
heard he played "dirty blvd. at the garden). the crowd was so into it
thursday night that lou played endlessly. he came out and did two songs for
an encore and left like it was the end (band bowing arm in arm and waving
goodbye). then he came out and did another two songs after the audience
refused to let up. as the band once again bowed arm in arm and started waving
goodbye, the crowd continued to go wild. after a minute of bowing, lou picked
up his guitar again and played 'walk on the wild side'. oh, what a night.
everyone was smiling.
also glad to see there's a sib contingent on the jmdl. if you have no albums
by jane, check into sheeba.ca, buy 'bound by the beauty', 'when i was a boy'

Does Joni have any singles from her forthcoming album, "Taming the
Tiger"? I've heard half of it on a tape tree and it's pure Joni. She
is self produced and found lots of new "colors" on a new Roland VG-8

I am back in northern Michigan after a long travel. My wonderful husband
and chauffeur Nate decided to continue on rather than staying in metro
Detroit.
Quick impressions this early Tuesday are:
I am glad I was traveling all day and didn't get caught up in "BubbaGate".
Nate was so impressed with how wonderful all of you listers are that he is
now considering Colorado next year. Yippee!
The picture of Joni taking a picture of us in USA Today was wonderful. Any
way we can get a copy?!?!
JMDL had 25 members within 50 feet of the stage Saturday. Our presence was
felt and envied by many in the crowd. I don't know how many questions I
answered concerning my JMDL denim shirt (thanks Les!).
Atmosphere is induced by the people in a place, not the place itself;
therefore the magical feeling of the Starlite over the weekend.
The hospitality of Don and Gene was so welcoming after the long haul on
Saturday. How great to just sit and joke with the masses as we reveled in
the advantage of having home turf delivered to us. To see the huge banner
raised on the RV and the comments that arose from the crowd as they
filtered by was wonderful. Kudos as well for the obstacles that were
overcome in securing the great parking spot!
Kate and her "can-do" attitude. Without her we would not have gone to
Friday's show. We would not have stayed at the lovely pizza encrusted
Starlite. Would not have had our "dogtags" that distinguished us from the
rest of the large group of Joni fans. I can't leave out the wonderful tape
footage of our Friday night escapades at the Bates Motel.
Fellow Starliters Amy, her off-list friend Patty, Jan and her husband Phil,
for making Friday night so much fun and Saturday morning a real headache :-)
Silent Simon sitting stoically studying security.
Mendi, Mary and Joe, bringing a bunch of enthusiasm to the group of us
already seated.
Sue Mac, twisted ankle and all, braving the crowds to get the shots and
story for the homepage. Go girl!
Heather, thanks for shouting out Brain Blade's name with me as he walked
out on stage. The memory of his smile as we yelled will stay with me for a
while. What a wonderful musician he is, and how magical it was to share
that moment with you.
Deb, who looked at me askance as the young girl and boy stumbled over our
belongings during Lou Reed's set. You could have easily gotten mad at
these two, but your patience with them was outstanding. That is really
telling of what a great person you are. BUT....Aren't you glad they were
gone for Joni!!!
Brian Gross, who kept the group in the 60's spirit, literally and figuratively.
Robbert and Kay, who both stumbled in and got their territory staked out in
time for the true performer! Your smiles were infectious and I am so glad
that you were willing to wind through the human bramble to get to our spot.
Frank, you stood next to me for quite a while and I am regretting not
introducing myself to you. I hope you had a wonderful time in the press
pit and that we see some of your pictures posted soon.
Brian and Deb, showing up early Saturday morning and defending the turf all
day. You were both rewarded with wonderful seats and a smile from Joni
that was directed right at you. I missed signing your book Brian, and if I
had the chance to do so now would write that your bright eyes lit up the
dull morning as we waited for the gates to open. Your excitement was
easily read and spilled on to hung-over me enough that I energized my
strides down the hill with a heavy backpack in search of good territory.
To the victor goes the spoils - thanks for sharing squatter's rights on
Saturday.
Kai, you snuck up on me and I missed the opportunity to introduce myself.
Same with Lori, who I missed not once, not twice, but three times during
the course of the weekend. I regret the fact that I neglected these
chances.
I am saving my review of Joni for the homepage. Thanks again to all of the
listers out there for providing that "commune" spirit that made a decade
long forgotten come back to life over Woodstock weekend.
1:03 est. Time for me to go to bed. Happy Birthday Amelia!

The '70s voting session is now open at http://www.wallofsound.com
Of the suggested nominees, only C&S made it for Joni. I chose
that one to maximize her chances of getting one in the top, then
chose HOSL on my own. We had originally discussed Blue as
the consensus JMDL vote, but I think switching it to C&S makes
sense since it is an actual nominee.
As could be expected, the top 10 when I voted was 100% white male.
That was annoying enough in the '60s (only Jimi broke the color
barrier, playing what white rocker boys think is their music), but
for Marvin Gaye's _What's Going On_ to be absent from a '70s best
of is a travesty, IMO. And I am not throwing that word around
lightly. To ignore one of the top 10 best albums of all time like that
reeks of Invisible Man syndrome. Please help Joni and Marvin (or
Stevie or *someone*) break the barrier.
It should be noted that in the methodology page it states that the
top *25* from each decade will be ranked in the top 100 based on
its percentage of the vote for its decade, so _Clouds_ may be alive
yet and C&S definitely has a chance.

Hey Marvin is in there! I must confess I found most of the current
frontrunners and nominees chosen to be real pukey. I had a tough time but
chose Joni C&S and wrote in Blue and For The Roses (how is FTR so
overlooked?!), the two Stevies, Marvin, Van, James T., Steely and Elvis
