Here's the Joni portion of the NY Times review of Day in the
Garden. It was written by Jon Pareles. Read the whole article (and
see nice photo of Joni) at the NY Times web site,
http://www.nytimes.com
You must register before you can read anything, but it's free.
But Ms. Mitchell only looked back briefly. The bulk of her set
drew from the albums she has made since she released
"Hejira" in 1976. They share a private, contemplative style
that barely acknowledges pop's demands. Wispy, attenuated
melodies float in arrangements without edges, built on
reverberating guitar chords and liquid, shifting rhythms. She writes
melodies like a jazz singer's improvisations, using
flexibility and fragmentation instead of pop's repetition
and hooks. One of the least abstruse songs she performed was from
Billie Holiday's repertory, "Comes Love."
Ms. Mitchell's lyrics are diaristic, drifting from reflections
on the news to questions about the purpose of life to
updates on romance. In songs from her next album, due in
September, Ms. Mitchell sang about lovers hiding the sounds
of passion behind train whistles, about bringing a new partner
home to a disapproving mother and about how "lawyers and
loan sharks are laying America to waste." Even when her
opinions grow cranky, what holds the songs together is Ms.
Mitchell's voice, pearly and assured, making her
free-floating vagaries sound like shared confidences.

From the Middleton Times-Herald:
Joni Mitchell: The moment more than 20,000 fans waited for came at
the end of a superb, sophisticated set that featured
only one vintage tune, "Big Yellow Taxi," and a host of newer jazzy
tunes from albums like "Turbulent Indigo" and "Night Ride Home."
Holding an electric guitar, she strode up to the microphone and
said, "You're a beautiful audience. I missed the first one so I
wrote a song about it." Then, with her hips gently
swaying, she strummed that guitar and sang in a husky,
rich voice, "We were stardust/We were golden/And we've got to back
to the garden." Joni Mitchell has grown older
gracefully. Woodstock moment: That was it.

My gratitude to the jmdlers who got there so early to save the rest
of us a
spot. I never dreamt I would be that close to joni. The one thing
that was a
pleasant surprise for me was the hugh number of joni fans....there
were
thousands and thousands of screaming joni fans around me.
Joni and the band were simply amazing, I started getting teary eyed
during the
first few notes of Hejira. The new songs are superb, and the covers
were a
lot of fun, joni obviously enjoyed them as much as the crowd. I
thought the
set was way too short, Lou's seemed much longer. I am not sure if it
seemed
short because I was so mesmerized. Brian Blade was a perfect bandmate
for
joni. Her voice sounded really terrific, better than she ever did,
and
especially on Just Like This Train and Trouble Man. Trouble Man was
done with
a LOT of soul, Marvin would have been proud. She looked wonderful,
radiant
and very comfortable playing to such a hugh crowd. I wish I could
remember
more from the concert, but I am still in a state of shock, the whole
event
seemed to fly by in minutes.
I was very touched when a young lady on crutches made it all the way
from the
back of the crowd to the stage to present flowers to joni.
My only regret, nothing from Blue. I was not expecting it, but was
praying
that she would change her mind and play something from Blue. It is
such a
critical piece of work. Joni, if you happen to read this before your
Oct/Nov
tour, please reconsider. We are not asking you to paint starry night
again,
just exhibit it for us one more time, please.

MITCHELL RELEASES A 'TIGER': Joni Mitchell,
who was considering retiring from the music business
only last year, has invested a newfound passion in
her
latest album, "Taming The Tiger."
"My prejudices against popularity are many, but I'm
trying to get bigger," says Mitchell, the recipient
of
Billboard's 1995 Century Award for distinguished
creative achievement. "I like the way this record
turned
out, plus my stock has risen lately with Janet
Jackson
sampling me in her hit ["Got 'Til It's Gone"] and
with my becoming a
tabloider. More heads are turning at airports these
days."
Reprise will release the album, which reflects
Mitchell's longtime love of
jazz, ambient soundscapes, and layered sounds, Sept.
29 in the U.S. and
Sept. 28 in the rest of the world. Mitchell will
perform Sept. 18 at a benefit
for the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago and
may play dates
around the U.S. in October or November.

This question came up recently where I mentioned Judy Collins voice on
the Folgers commercial. Paul corrected me and said it was another
singer. I strongly questioned his info and sources. His source, he said,
was his knowledge of the 2 singers voices, and, I guess, my lack of it.
I wrote to Procter and Gamble. It's Judy's voice, for those who had
initially inquired.

During Pete's set at the Garden he introduced his acoustic guitar
player/backup singer as the woman (who also choreographed Tommy when it was

voice and was great) After introducing her he said, "But she's not the

Great to hear all the accounts of Saturday's concert from everyone who was

unfamiliar with most of it, as I do not know most of her new material.
Anyhow, I didn't read anyone write about Pete Townshend. How was his set?
What did he play?

Looks like the world is learning that
ttt will be coming out, and perhaps the

As we head into the final stretch for

Great idea, Bill!
This is what I have in my little bag of tricks:
1-I wear her TTT tee shirt everywhere these days, I do a pitch
for her any chance I get in public.
2-I will be calling 3 radio stations that will play her stuff.
One might possibly not have the CD, and I will "loan" it
to a responsible person with bailment conditions, and push
the airplay like heck...
3-Appreciative friends will be getting TTT from me for xmas
and birthdays.
4-I will be attending as many Jonishows as I can afford, and
bring as many folks as I can kidnap to join me
5-I will be talking and chicken squawking "Joni" on every other
discussion list to which I subscribe, and I'll stealthly
plant plugs for her everywhere on the internet I visit.

Also- I really think that we should start

(with his back up singer-don't recall her name) and Taj Mahal came out and
played Sight to the Blind (from Tommy)!!! He played more than that but I

Thanks for the update on Jane Siberry. She is definitely someone that a
lot of people on the list would love. She has an amazing voice, is a
beautiful songwriter, and goes off on these riffs that are just
incredible. "When I was a Boy" is one of my favorite albums of all time
and contains songs that are "normal" length and incredible (like "Love
is Everything" or "Calling All Angels") to long, winding, almost
improvisational songs (like "All the Candles in the World" or "The
Gospel According to Darkness").
I know we are all in a tizzy about that other Canadian singer that we
love, but Jane, the other Canadian, should be given a listen also. If
you haven't already.

Before I heard Siberry back in the early 80's, Mitchell was the only real

Siberry changed that. Both she and Mitchell share a total dedication to
their muse. They are completely

Hey! everyone here's the VH1 address. Go over and request a Joni special.

Especially those who attended the concert. I think that will make some
sort of impact.
BTW - there were many people during the concert that were asking about all
of us JMDLers. We had our beautiful shirts on 9T's and denim), Kate made
nice JMDL/garden badges for us, Sue C.'s fantastic banner to Joni. I think
there are many Joni fans who are not online or just didn't know about us.
We did a good job (I think) advertising the JMDL. Don & Gene had a really
big JMDL banner on the outside of the RV that they drove up from NJ (Don -
did you get that thing out of there ok? ;-) The RV was statically parked
facing people as they were leaving "the garden". The banner had a bright
yellow background with JMDL in big blue letters. In size - it covered the
front of the RV!! A bunch of us were groovin' to Joni's DJRD and MOA
outside the RV after the show ended. People would stop and ask us what we
were all about. That was cool.
We are the JMDL and we love Joni - artist, poet, musician!

Thanks Heather for the fashion report! I saw the NY Times photo this morning

cute. Found it interesting that the Times reviewer was pretty much snotty to
everyone else but Joni. Glad he knew better!

A number of us at the May concerts and tapings also noticed the large diamond
on her left ring finger. It was so sparkling you could notice it from very far
away. Wondering, I checked out Donald's hands at the taping and noticed a wide
band gold ring with a heart-shaped ruby or garnet on his right ring finger.

I don't understand what you mean by "Perpetuate the inaccurate stereotypes of
Joni's music". I would have thought a suitable opening act for Joni would be
someone who's GOOD! Shawn Colvin is not merely good, she's great; her songs,
singing and guitar playing are all in the first division, and she's also
superb between songs - she has fabulous comic timing. I can't see what
inaccurate sterotypes of Joni's or anyone else's music are involved here, and
I think she'd be an ideal opening act for the Great Woman

Subject: joni supermarket synchronicity
In order to fully appreciate the Joni in the supermarket experience that
I just had, I have to tell you all about my daughter, a budding young
Joni fan (like she had any choice) I'll try not to get too cute--but I
am her mom, after all.
She is not really interested in grown-up music, but she has taken a
shine to Joni, and sometimes before bedtime will drag her pillow around
and say "I want Joni, mom." Which means that she wants to see the clip
that recently reran on Letterman--Joni doing "Just Like This Train"
solo. That usually puts her to sleep happy. She accepts no
substitutes--has to be "Just Like This Train," which she refers to as
"Lost My Heart." My husband even hunted my daughter down during
Saturday's webcast so she could hear Joni sing "Just Like This Train"
live. (I am pretty pleased to have a Joni fan in my family at long last,
but I am also steeling myself for the day twenty or thirty years from
now when I appear in one of my child's novels or short stories as the
freaky Joni Obsessed Mother character. A risk I'll have to take.)
So. Today is my little girl's fourth birthday, and after spending the
morning taking care of the last few details for her soon to happen
Rugrats theme party, I stopped by the bakery at my supermarket to pick
up the cake. As I was spelling out my daughter's name for the cake
decorator, K-E-L-L-E-N, what came on very loudly over the supermarket
PA system? You can see it coming: "Just Like This Train." So I stood
there and listened and just as Joni reached the last few bars, the cake
decorating woman emerged from the back and handed me the cake on the
very last note of the song.
I usually dismiss stuff like this as coincidence, but I have to say the
whole incident left me feeling a little freaky. Any interpretation for
me, oh ye wise ones of the list?

A very poignant story, Catherine. BTW "Kellen" is a wonderful name, similar
to "Kilauren" and "Kyla," which is my daughter's name. Anyway, I think
Kellen is destined to be influenced by Joni and will grow up to be
intelligent, independent, introspective, creative, and incapable of telling
a lie...just like Joni...and what's wrong with that? :-)

As I exited Superamerica today I heard a couple of familiar notes which I knew
belonged to Joni. I was prepared to re-enter the store in order to name that
tune, but found speakers outside to serenade gasoline pumpers. Sure enough, it
was "Come in from the Cold" and it was from "Night Ride Home", not a Muzak
version.

That both Joni and Shawn Colvin, regardless of their respective
merits or lack thereof, have been pigeonholed by the media as folkie
women with acoustic guitars is undeniable. After all, we spend a
considerable amount of energy and JMDL bandwidth lamenting this
fact regularly.
If Joni really wants to expand her popularity somewhat this time out,
she has to try to bust out of that box. No doubt she'd be happy to.
Touring with an artist like Shawn Colvin would achieve the exact
opposite: one woman in a box plus another woman in the same box
equals a very constricted box.
I think we all agree that her opening act should be "good," but just
"good" isn't good enough. To be ideal, IMHO, it should be a "good"
artist whose artistic vision is complementary, but challenging, to
Joni's. Likewise for their fan base. Cassandra Wilson and Joni
Mitchell perform together and each of them ends the night with
some new fans. Shawn Colvin and Joni Mitchell perform together,
and everyone there is either already a fan of both, or has their
mind made up about *not* being a fan of one or the other already.
Same goes for the media perception of the tour. A Shawn/Joni
tour gets spun as a folkie woman mid-life Lilith redux. A
Cassandra/Joni tour gets a second look for its unexpected pairing,
and may even escape media reductionism to let the *music* be
the focus for a change. Wouldn't that be nice?
Of all the Day in the Garden coverage you've seen (including their
own publicity) how much of it focused on Joni's experimentalism
and how much of it focused on her supposed "hippy" roots? The
media's a sucker for a stereotype. I say we make it as hard for
them as possible.

I know this was intended humorously, but it does touch on a
concern I've kept hidden until now. I'm afraid that at this point
Joni may *need* a well-chosen opener to help sell enough
tickets (and split the expenses) to justify the financial risk.
Sure *we* would love to be the only people at the concert, but
I'd hate to see another financial debacle like the WTRF tour
(according to Joni). Then she may *really* be done touring

Subject: What a Day in the Garden!!!
Hello to fellow Gardeners & Listers!!
First I want to say what a genuine treat it was to meet and party with
Lori Fye from San Antonio, Suze Cameron and her hubby Nate from
Michigan, Sue McNamara, Brian Gross from south Jersey, Amy and Patty
from Michigan and Ohio, Robbert from Holland, Kay Ashley, Don Fluke and
his friend Gene, Mendi and her pals Mary and Joe, Jan and hubby Phil,
Deb Messling and her boyfriend Fred Walzenfree (!), Heather, Brian and
his wife Mrs. Chilihead (!), Simon, and Kai Wong -- my only regret of
the entire weekend was not spending more time with all of you, AND
missing all of Pete Townsend's set, and... well, perhaps not finding
something a bit less "rustic" than the Starlite Marina and Lodge! It
was meeting all of you and sharing our Joni-love that really made this
whole experience such a wonderful event and memory!
Arrived late Thursday night and hooked up with Lori at LaGuardia, the
first in a series of happy and synchronicitous moments... Met the very
hospitable and easy-going Suze and Nate the following day at the
Starlite. Together we made our recon mission of the former Yasgur farm
on Friday afternoon. Heard the the tail-end of Don Henley, and most of
Stevie, until the rain chased us away. I'm glad I can say that I got
rained on at old Woodstock! Later that day, met the vivacious Amy and
Patty, then the loving Jan and Phil, all of them also staying at the
sanitationally-challenged Starlite (!). Partied in the parking lot with
Joni blaring from the Amy-Patty Party Van. At one point as I was
walking toward the music and the happy JMDL Gardeners, I was struck with
the awesome sensation that we were all there with the common purpose of
seeing Joni because of our strong and long love for her and her music, a
feeling that, even a few years ago, I couldn't imagine embracing!
After imbibing and laughing, and running around videotaping people with
the shaky-cam (!), we awoke early the following morning and made it to
the festival gate at 7AM, plenty of time to stake out the prime
left-center-front of the stage. As we unpacked some contraband (water,
cameras, etc.), we unfurled Suze's AWESOME poster (JMDL [heart] JONI),
and just before Joni's set, we got the permission of the surly-looking
security guys in the pit to tape it to the front of the fence in front
of the stage so that Joni could see it -- imagine our laughter and
cheering when Joni strode out on stage with a camera to take our picture
in front of it!! THANKS, SUZE!!! Melanie and Donovan were fine, but I
really got my mind blown by Richie Havens -- he's the same as he ever
was -- it may as well have been 1969!
Most of what you've read in earlier reports says things about Joni's
set that I can't add to with any eloquence or volume. I was lucky
enough to be standing a mere fifty feet away from her, my view
unobstructed -- a mainline to Joni. I could see every expression, hear
every PERFECT note (and I do mean perfect!). It was pure bliss. I was
awestruck, and then not so surprised -- it was everything I'd hoped to
experience and more. I was very glad to hear some of the tunes that
others had heard at the Wash./LA concerts, and more glad to see Joni's
incredible band. Larry Klein: when he wasn't looking on with total
love and admiration at Joni weaving her magic, he was jamming wildly
with the beaming Brian Blade -- what a duo! Greg Liesz added
mezmerising accompaniment on lap steel and electric guitar very soberly
and professionally. Mark Isham, another highly accomplished veteran,
blew out some tender howls on trumpet from behind his Foster Grants, and
as cool as his demeanor was, I could see him smile every so often at all
the cheers and shouts of love coming Joni's way. Thanks to those more
clear-headed individuals who have recounted the set list -- I was
rocking out in my little bit of heaven. It was sheer rapture.
Jan's right -- although Joni's set seemed somewhat short (Lou Reed
jacked up the jam at the farm by playing a very long and sizzling set)
- -- we could have listened for hours and still have asked for more.
There were a few moments when the very idea that I was standing in The
Farm and about to see/was seeing/had just seen Joni, as well as Melanie,
Donovan, Richie Havens, Lou, and Pete Townsend... it struck me full
force -- it was truly epic and astounding. I'M SO GLAD I WENT!!!
Thanks again to Don "Captain Tailgate" Fluke, Mendi and her JMDL
blanket (!) and her pal Joey with the digital camera, Brian Gross and
his Joni yearbook (and a tasty preview of Tape Tree #7), SueMac for
snapping the photos and being our press rep, Robbert for gifting me with
a Joni boot-CD of her '94 Toronto concert (soon to be made available to
Simon and Brian), Spy-man Simon (quiet, and with reason!), Frank
Tortorici from "Addicted to Noise" for reaching out to Gardeners for
interview material, Suze for her wonderful banner, and EVERYONE for
making it such a great and memorable time. Special thanks to Lori, Suze
and Nate, and Brian for driving around vehicle-free me! Thank you again
to Les for setting us up with the Garden list, Wally for being our
General, and to the stern-looking security guy who, with total cool and
professionalism, agreed to take some of my JMDL Gardener tags backstage
to Joni and the band! (I have no doubt she received them!)
So many details to remember, but so many boxes to unpack, so thanks to
the List for reading!
Much love to all,
Kate in CO xoxoxox
