Hi everybody,
I've heard that Joni's set is now scheduled to begin at 4PM EST. The
shift from 3PM is probably because of the fact that both Donovan and
Melanie were added after the original schedule was announced. This
concert is gonna be great!
Later,

Hey TJ,
Did the same, and fully agree! Windows Media Player has clearer, crisper
sound, and as Kakki observed, the images seem to be more in synch.
Oh, and yeah, you *caught* me...despite my tirade on primitive and inferior
technology yesterday, I've been watching/listening since 10am (as you guessed),
it sure is better than NOTHING!
But now that I've concluded that it won't be broadcast on TV, I am busy with
the radio dial seeing if there is perhaps an FM simulcast...but that too is
looking bleak, so it looks like I'm stuck with the PC :-(
Still, can't wait for Joni!!!

Hi all!,
I'll get the JC out of the way at the top so you can move
on if you so desire.
I of course had to find the store where all the vinyl is.
A place on the Haight called Amoeba records. Pretty
overwhelming.
I always knew that Nazereth had covered Joni's "This
Flight Tonight", but I was thus far able to avoid it. Well,
I couldn't resist the stereo/mono promo 45 of it, so I
brought it home, along with about $250.00 worth of other
vinyl. Went kinda nuts! A nice Dylan boot, a rainbow
Capitol, pristine 1st press copy of "Music From Big Pink",
about 60 45's. The Nazareth 45 is every bit as horrifying as
I expected it to be. (bad)Heavy metal Joni. Imagine it if
you dare. Now on the other hand, a good band could have
rocked the shit out of that song. This version isn't it!
We drove to the top of Mount Tamalpais and burned one for
Joni and The Cros. Sadly, it wasn't "at about 3". It was
actually about 11 P.M. and the views were astonishing!
end JC.
A bit about S.F.
San Francisco and New York. What a fabulous set of
mis-matched jewells! The bookends of a country.
The 1st time I went to New York, I knew my way around
Manhatten by studying a map during a two hour plane ride.
After 4 days , I started to feel comfortable getting around
S.F. A much more intimidating city. The terrain, the layout.
Absolutely breath taking! No offense to New Yorkers, a city
that thills me no end, But I'm here to tell you, San
Francisco is IT! The temperature can actually make
noticeable changes from block to block. No kidding. It
amazed me. The weather report would say that the high temp
for the day would be between 65 and 80 degrees, and I'm
thinkin' what, can't they narrow it down to any less than a
15 degree spread. And the answer is no. In one neighborhood
it would be 65 degrees. No more than a 20 minute drive
later, suddenly it's 80.
There is nothing like a drive north from S.F. on the El
Camino Real aka The Kings Highway (thanks Chris) aka Highway
1. This was something I was pretty sure I wanted to do, but
then when we met JMDL Darice for dinner in Sausalito (hi
Darice) she informed me that Stinson Beach (up the north
coast) is where they scattered Janis Joplin's ashes, so the
race was on! I am now the proud owner of a airline size
bottle of Jack Daniels, filled with Stinson Beach sand! A
fitting tribute to Janis, I think. I could have never done
it without you, Darice! Thank you!
I also got a nice shot of me in a cell at Alcatraz! I look
like I belong!
And you know, there may be more.
All in all, a wonderful trip. I highly recommend San
Francisco to one and all !!!!

Subject: Joni's "Day In The Garden"
Hi everybody,
The marvelous Melanie and Donovan, who were two of my favorite
hippie singer-songwriters in the late 60's and early 70's, both played
hour long sets. I know and love Donovan for his hit songs and Melanie has
a special place in my heart because I bought every single album she
released up through the 1980's.
Richie Havens played a 75 minute set of old favorites and newer
material. He saved "Here Comes The Sun" and "Handsome Johnny" for late in
his set and the 1969 show stopper "Freedom" came after Richie's guitarist
played a tribute to Jimi Hendrix with a blistering version of "The Star
Spangled Banner."
Richie played guest-host on Woodstock.com once again, and Donovan
also visited and reminisced on many subjects including meeting Joni in
the late 1960's. He commented on how prolific a songwriter she was and
said that in those days she had a large number of self-penned songs in
her reportoire which was in contrast to most singer-songwriters of the
time who had 7 songs of their own and 3 songs that they sang by other
writers.
Joey Ramone showed up to join the RadioWoodstock.com group in the
studio. He's scheduled to guest-host tomorrow during Modern Rock day when
the stage will be filled with younger musicians such as Third Eye Blind,
Dishwalla, Goo Goo Dolls, Joan Osborne, etc.
Lou Reed came on stage at 2:10PM EST, opening his set with "Sweet
Jane" and following that with a 100 minute set that included selections
from all phases of his career including "Satellite of Love," "Dirty
Boulevard" and "Set the Twilight Reeling."
Richie returned to RadioWoodstock.com, having changed out of his
sweaty clothes. He talked about Joni and how he and Joni and David Crosby
had sat around in the 1960's making up alternate tunings. He said that
Joni has certainly gotten the most value and use out of them.
Joni began her set at 4:20PM EST by shouting out "It took me 30 years
to get here," followed by the strains of "Hejira" rolling out over the
crowd which had swelled to 20,000. Her 15 song set featured many
surprises, including the standards
"Summertime" and "Comes Love," Marvin Gaye's classic "Trouble Man" and
her new composition "No Apologies."
THE BAND

Joni sounded fantastic. She was in good voice, well rehearsed,
empassioned and obviously involved with her performance, and reactive to
the crowd of her enthusiastic fans. She should have played longer.

Was that something else or what.! Even with the dinky little
video and the so so sound I was blown away. As the original
Woodstock was an historic event I think this was also very
important because of the live video and audio over the web.
Something akin to when the Beatles did the first live world wide
satellite broadcast where they sang All you Need Is Love.
Loved "Nothing can be done" (if that's what it's called) it gave
Joni a real opportunity to show what she still can do with her
voice and she looked like she was having a great time.
The big poster from the JMDL with the big heart showed up fine
though unfortunately I couldn't make out any faces. And boy the
crowd was really with her from what I could hear.

- - --Michael>
I think that Lisa Stansfield is probably the best all-round singer of our
time, (not just soul) but sadly she doesn't know it yet. Until a couple of
months ago, I would have placed her as the second best singer in the world
that I know of - that was before Sinatra died. He was the greatest.
Obviously I'm not putting Joni down here - You need to understand I'm making
a distinction between an artist/singer/songwriter like Joni, (and she is one
of the best if not THE best and most charismatic, alongside say, Kate Bush
or Stevie Wonder) and a pure and simple SINGER like Sinatra.
There are also Performance Artists who are a different category again, such
as Madonna, Prince, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire, Liza Minelli, Grace Jones.
These are people who bring something else to the art of music, such as stage
performance, dance, or vigorously alluring iconic self-promotion.
But Frank Sinatra was a singer. An interpreter. He could sing songs. He got
INSIDE the words and
turned them inside out for us, so the listener could feast on the meaning of
each syllable of every lyric.
Joni also does this, but then, it's easier for her as she wrote the stuff in
the first place. But Sinatra just sang other people's stuff. Even if his
interpretation was different from the initial one the writer perhaps
intended (say on Sinatra and Basie's swing version of Stevie Wonder's 'You
are the sunshine of my life'), Frank still does a great job, and introduces
another element that marks out a real singer from the rest - the fun
element. It's immediately apparant from any Sinatra recording that the man
is having a great time singing it.
Lisa Stansfield also has this gift. She gets into the lyric, you can hear
the thrill in her voice, and she inmparts that thrill to the listener. She
is UP THERE on a cloud in the lyrics. Put the headphones on, listen, and
you'll see what I mean.
Lisa's problem is that she can't find the right material. She does good work
with middle of the road soul and dance music, but hasn't found her niche
yet. But she's young.
Frank had the same problem for a while. He was a big pop singer in the early
1940s, singing anything they could throw at him. But after the war he was
practically on the skids, forgotten. It was nearly a decade before he came
back again, age 40, with a new sound, a terrific sound. On these cool and
bouncy 50's Nelson Riddle and Count Basie arrangements, Sinatra finally
established himself as THE singer of our century. The talent had always been
there, and so had much of the material (much of Frank's 50's catalogue was
recycled 30's and 40's songs). But the key was the arrangements and the
maturity of Sinatra's delivery. Now he's gone, and I'm tellin' ya, there's
mighty few singers out there who can follow his act. Lisa Stansfield
probably. Maybe George Michael (he tries hard, but he's really only a
warbler). Roger Daltrey springs to mind, but he's perhaps past it, or past
caring. Morrison's dead. Aretha Franklin can cut the mustard. So can Stevie
Nicks, but both those ladies are too entrenched in their own musical
heritage and milieu to break out in the foreseeable future. Carol King had
it of course. She was GOOD. "Your so faaarrrrrrrrrr away!" BTW where the
heck is she now? Moma Cass Elliot, yep, she had the gift. Even Frank's
daughter Nancy had it, and it's a crime that woman hasn't recorded anything
since the sixties worth mentioning. Her voice was weak but she could
interpret just fine, although not consistently. Joe Jackson can interpret to
break your heart, but his voice sounds horrible. James Brown, though his
repertoire is too limited, even though he can carry a song like nobody else.
Donald Fagen, though that sharp New Jersey accent doesn't travel well
transatlantic. Celine Dion? - don't make me laugh. She's just another
warbler. I could do that. You could do it. Anybody could. But I'm talking
about SINGING here. INTERPRETATION. Mariah Carey? Another warbler. Good for
TV commercials, nothing else. Mick Hucknall's a pratt who takes himself too
seriously, and for that reason one can never warm to his singing.
Sting's found a nice formula - teddy-bear toy-boy of cool to all the British
new-age divorcees, but consequently he's lost his sting, even though he
thinks he still has it. I think he lost it somewhere in the rain forest...
It's a pity because he had such promise before he sold out.
(by the way, I only have one Lisa Stansfield record (a single), so I'm not
plugging her as a big fan. That won't happen until she finds her style, and
that day may never come. I'm talking about SINGERS here in this posting
remember.
But give Lisa a listen. If you don't like the dance and disco she sings to,
put her through a graphic equaliser, turn all the bass down, fade out the
drums, just leave her voice there and listen. You'll see what I'm talking
about. Or rather you'll hear it.
And you won't hear it in many other places...
IMHO,

Subject: thank you / garden concert
I just joined this discussion group last week. After my first post last
week I received, literally, dozens of welcome letters from people all
over the place. Thank you, this is really a warm, caring, and
interesting group of people. I guess it shouldn't surprise me,
considering the shared interest that brings us be interested in each
other's thoughts in the first place. What a wonderful use of technology
this is.
And speaking of appropriate uses of technology... in this case a
counter-example; I just finished watching and listening to the Webcast
of Joni at the garden (is she one of the most beautiful souls on this
planet, or what?), and while I have to agree with Wally that "It's
certainly better than seeing or hearing nothing," I am definitely with
Kenny and gdave in my lack of respect for this technology. When I think
of all the gigabytes of bandwidth that are being wasted, pushing 100
channels of SHIT to everyone on the local TV cable, while the one media
event I'm interested in is only available over my modem... sigh... when
is someone going to offer a combined TV/web service based on pull
technology? You could still channel surf; just scan the available
programming; and the quality and speed would be mind blowing! Oh well,
someday... Since the cable TV people are making lots-o-money now, it
probably won't happen until enough people have direct access to fiber.
(Still, if any of you are rich media execs; there's a business
opportunity there! Most families currently pay over $100 a month for
phone + TV + web access, when it's all just bandwidth and access to
programming.)
Has anyone heard of any plans for a later TV broadcast of the garden
concert?
To those of you at the garden right this very moment: I am so very
envious. (in a "happy for you but wish I was there" sort of way..).
Enjoy!

What a show! I had to reboot during "Slouching.." and wasn't able to
gain access after that. Damn it ! I found out what I had missed. I did
notice how Joni strategically planned her set around her smokes.
Unfortunately I'm a smoker and notice these things. "Hejira"-guitar in
hand, "Comes Love"-cig in hand, "Happiness -Guitar in hand,
"Summertime"- smoke in hand. I only bring this up since we've discussed
Joni's smoking plus this is my 4th day without and I'm feeling somewhat
crazy.

I had to be away and miss the concert - got in the door as Joni was ending (big
boo hoo) but it was so wonderful to read everyone's reactions and to hear that
the JMDL Big Heart banner was prominently displayed. This morning I caught a
little of Donovan and could swear I saw a close up of Lori Fye rocking in the
crowd wearing a flower head wreath! What a day! Can't wait to hear her do
"Summertime" on the next tree!

Hi List!
What a time! What a day in Joni history! My wife, Debbie and I, met some of
our fellow JMDLers for the first time today at Yasgur's farm. Joni finally got
there and so did we. Let's just say JONI WAS SULTRY, SIZZLING AND THE DIVA AND
GODDESS WE KNOW HER TO BE. ( Took some notes, I will be collaborating with Sue
to get an article out for the home page.)
By the way if any of you gardeners picked up a green and tan cotton jacket
that you don't remember bringing, can you send it my way?
We had an impromptu official jmdler guest book, but if you were there today,
can you send me your name and address. I will send you a special bookmark to
commemorate our day!
Special thanks to Don and Gene for their hospitality and after concert RV
reception! Also, to the great lady who made the tags we wore (sorry I don't
remember your name, but I sure remember you!)
Too Blissed out to write anymore.
Love you guyz! Thanks for a wonderful day.

What joy! Joni was in terrific voice, looking ravishing and appearing to
be having a blast.
Great set list too...
Here's my dream Fall Joni tour - Dr. John is the opener, and they perform
lots of cool tunes from the 1940-50s.
Dream on dreamer.
Pete Townsend is one of the few musicians who could actually follow Joni.
Feeling half a million strong.

Hi fellow Joni darlings!
It`s great to join JMDL being a Joni freak and putting up with ridicule for 14
years.
Has anyone else experienced this? I just missed the broadcast earlier (boo
hoo) but loved reading about it.
Listening to the new stuff on the real audio radio interview I was paralysed,
in tears, humbled, emotionally alchemized. There`s still no-one to touch her
on the planet (and I`ve been around). Joni For Earth Embassador!

I missed most of it too (moving my daughter into her new home)
After catching the last song and having it cut out on me twice, I don't
know if it will be worth listening to if it's archived.
You that have listened to other concerts on the web, was this normal?
Diana, back to just me and my cats.

Hello All-
Just had to send a note before going to bed. The show today was
incredible and the system almost behaved its self. I only missed three
songs. All in all, it looked to me like she had a great time and did not
seem nervous or anything. I wish I could have been there live.
Unfortunately I could not catch a glimpse of any of our brothers and
sisters out there, but I could here you. Safe trip home to all and hey
Joni why don't you make this concert thing a habit, New Orleans is
lovely in the fall and hey we could do dinner at Maximo's.
Night all,
Michael
