How about John Kelly? If she elects to play smaller venues - and I think we're all hoping she will - the crowds will be 100% there for Joni. Not only could John satisfy the audience's need to hear the early songs, he would provide an appetizer fit for Joni fans everywhere. Or, if she ends up touring with the Brian Blade Fellowship, I'd be very happy to hear them do an instrumental set at the top of the show, and another one after intermission. I agree with Michael Y. that someone like Sarah McLachlan might bring in a lot of her own devoted fans, and it would really suck if Joni came onstage only to see a third of the audience streaming out of the theatre. Joan Armatrading did something interesting for her 1980 tour - she (or her management) invited local artists to open for her in each city, obviously people with a solid local reputation and following who could also use additional exposure. Of course this is a risky option, and I have to admit that after three songs from her opening act in Vancouver, I repaired to the lobby for a smoke. I like the idea of John Kelly or Brian Blade :-) Cheers, everybody! I wondered about gardening as a metaphor. "Getting ourselves" back to the garden and its deeper meaning? This week I spent lots of time in the garden literally. Our home is called "garden house" (we considered rainy night house but it just didn't fit (lol)). Yesterday, I spent the day with a bunch of kids in the garden. Talk about fun! Anyways, it is probably too close too the show to start a thread about gardening. I also wanted to respond to the recent posts about Boy George. The Boy is still rocking. I saw him with two other recycled bands last week: Howard Jones and Human League. I always thought that his original female vocalist "Helen" something or other was amazing. She was a diva who should have gone off on her own. What was strange for me about the show was that it seemed like only yesterday I was hearing Boy for the first time along with Eurythmics, Madonna, etc. I remember going to the clubs in New York : Danceteria, Palladium and Limelight; and dancing till we dropped... Time to to get the spade and plant myself in the garden. See you all there!!! - -Brian PS. I once did jump on stage to meet and kiss Joan Baez but I don't think I'll have an opportunity to do that tomorrow. By the way, I heard Joni was making 450k out of the deal and I thought "You go girl"! :-) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 13:08:13 +0100 From: catman Subject: NJC: Joni Scans Would the guy who sent me the Joni scans contact me, please. In the old days she had a beautiful Martin D-28 that was lost on an airplane. She recorded a lot of her early albums with it. There was a cover article of Joni in the August 1996 Acoustic Guitar Magazine that had a lineup of all the guitars she used. On the cover she is playing a Baby Collings. She has had many guitars and dulcimers custom made, too. Now she is playing a mahogany Parker fly electric hooked up to a VG-8 synthesizer which stores her 50+ tunings in the computer memory. She can also program an amazing number of guitar sounds into this miracle machinery. There has not been a single rebuffering in the 30 minutes I've been tuned in!! What that means for the unfamiliar is that the audio and video streams have been uninterrupted. I'm curious if this remains true as more people tune in as the day goes on, but we'll see. The audio quality is definitely not ideal, but the individual instruments are distinguishable - it's not like being there by any stretch, but I'm also in my own house, 1000 miles away. The video is not at all in synch with the music, but there are frequent changes of angle, and the pics update themselves VERY often (approximately 3-4 times a second). Any fan of Real Audio was also probably a great fan of transistor radio. Oh, I don't think we can blame the poor sound quality on my $180 speakers either. Theoretically, these offer me an enhanced experience compared to those listening with standard speakers. As for the video, the 2.5" by 1.75" window is a total insult to anyone who is familiar with the technical innovation known as the television. The lack of synch just adds insult to injury. And the fact that a full 20 or 30 or 40 minutes can elapse without the "webcast" being interrupted by "net congestion" should not be hailed as an achievement. If ABC or CBS or HBO had regular, predictable interruptions in their broadcasts they would all be out of business. I can't stand all this "wowie, this is so cool, what will they think of next" sh*t when it comes to PCs and the internet. This technology is NOT READY for public consumption, PERIOD. It is far more primitive and inferior to existing methods of broadcast, and I for one am PISSED that someone decided to give the broadcast rights to a micky mouse company like Infoseek instead of a company that knows something about the business of broadcasting and has the technological ability to pull it off properly. I'm not even sure that this "webcast" qualifies for the "better-than-nothing" category. St. Helens, followed by camping in central Oregon. Anyway, I've been catching up on the digests and thought I'd put in my vote for the all-time cheesiest song that I publicly despise but secretly love: "Muskrat Love" by The Captain and Tenille. In my opinion, that one takes the cake in the cheese category. Seems like I remember hearing some complaints back in the 70's because it was performed for Queen Elizabeth, and many considered it unfit for human ears even back then when it was popular. In August of '69, I was just turning 8 years old and lived on a farm near Ft. Worth, TX. At that time, my world of music consisted of my brother's Creedence album, a country radio station, and my mom's Big Band and Andy Williams records, so Woodstock was nothing more than a word I heard at school. However, in town there was a Woodstock Street; people kept stealing the street sign and the city kept replacing it, so they eventually had to place the sign high on a telephone pole. I didn't understand what the deal was. And now, it's back to the 2nd half of my vacation: a week of camping on the Olympic peninsula and WA coast, a week in either Alberta or on the Oregon coast, and ending with a couple of days in Victoria, B.C. Then it's back to cold, hard reality. However, I guess you mean songs that everyone likes but is too hip to admit to liking them? Like ABBA in the 70's? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 16:32:09 -0700 From: Mary Grace Valentinsson Subject: TTT (no false alarms) It's now listed in Valley database for the September streetdate. MG ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 98 16:44:57 -0700 From: Wally Breese Subject: A Day In The Garden- Day 1 Hi everyone, Yesterday I decided to download Real Player Plus 5.0, which is the latest version of that product for a MAC. It allows you to listen to broadcasts on Real Audio and to watch video on its counterpart, Real Video. The cost was $29.95, plus extras (a download plus a CD-Rom, a special deal on updated versions, etc.- Total $59!) but I figured I wanted to have the latest technology available for watching and hearing the performances at "A Day In The Garden," especially Joni's. My plan was to test it out on Friday and have the bugs ferretted out before Joni's performance on Saturday afternoon. Well, today's broadcast just ended and I have to say that the Real Video broadcast was pretty primitive. I admit that it's cool to see what's going on live onstage, what the artists are wearing, what design and colors the backdrop is, etc. but it's jumpy, often blurry, stop-action shots, more like single photos flipping erratically than a movie. And the sound is awful. The Real Audio sound is much better, sounding rather like AM radio, but it suffers from occasional drop-outs of the sound, with silence for a few seconds before the broadcast comes back on. The RadioWoodstock.com behind the stage interviews and discussion in-between sets with the DJ's and guest singer-songwriter Richie Havens, who is scheduled to appear onstage tomorrow afternoon, were informative and nostalgic. Richie, of course, opened the 1969 Woodstock Festival with his song "Freedom." How were the performances? I slept through Ziggy Marley (my problem, not his), taped Ten Years After for later listen and listened to and enjoyed Don Henley's performance, even if it was, as he said, "Really early in the day." Stevie Nicks was in good voice and sang many songs she'd rarely or never performed live. She called this her "Boxset" tour because she's not promoting a new album but a three CD boxset that came out two months ago. Stevie told the audience that this was the final show of her current tour. Rain distracted and resulted in a few 2-3 minute breaks between songs during Stevie's performance, while she changed clothes. The rain came and went and hopefully will stay away for the rest of the weekend. It's great to know that we'll at least be able to hear and see Joni's performance tomorrow, even if the broadcasts on Real Audio and especially Real Video suffer from numerous problems that surely will be solved by future technology. It's certainly better than seeing or hearing nothing. My best wishes to JMHP reporter and photographer Sue McNamara and to all who'll be at tomorrow's "A Day In The Garden" show. You're all lucky, really lucky. I can't wait to read all your reports! When asked who else was playing he said, joni , Joni Mitchell and ... Joni Mitchell. Then Stevie Nicks (laughter from audience ) and Pete said "I love Stevie and did a litlle "Stevie -like" arm movement. He also talked about Roger Daltrey and how much the two of them have come together lately. He mentinoed Roger is on tour with a symphony and sort of implied that was lame. I saw the last night of the British Rock Symphony tour. one hour of young students from the Royal Academy and the New York Boys choir and some fine voices doing British rock standards. Then an intermission and Roger doing 5-6 songs with the full symphony behind him. After that was Roger Daltrey "Unplugged". A fine evening of Who standards, some rocked, some redone. Many shared memories, including a lament for the late, great Who drummer, Keith Moon. Roger , a self proclaimed anarchist and music lover, was magnificent. In good voice, witty, and can still swing a mean mic. BTW, he did a beautiful version of Behind Blue eyes and led a singalong of You better, you better, you bet. A marvelous evening under a full moon and near the shores of Clearlake, CA. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 18:45:39 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: A Day In The Garden- Day 1 Wally wrote: > The RadioWoodstock.com behind the stage interviews and discussion > in-between sets with the DJ's and guest singer-songwriter Richie Havens, > who is scheduled to appear onstage tomorrow afternoon, were informative > and nostalgic. I'm very entertained by Richie's presence - he is adding sooo much depth to the occasion with his stories, recollections and the wisdom of his experience. He's really holding court over there in the most wonderful way. I'm getting a much better picture from the Windows Media Player than from the Real Audio but the sound is still not too great. I lent the 'collection' to an avid but computer-less joniphile from minneapolis- you should have seen his blue eyes widen and sparkle when he opened the box! Bart is a poet and puppeteer of some talent- and a true joni lover. i really enjoyed listening to 'a tape of you' again. i think the first go around at listening way back when was too scattered by interruptions- while driving, cooking, writing... and i didn't appreciate the full beauty of that project. also- i know many of you now- better than back then- and i was soooo moved this time. and intrigued- by lori's voice, by sherrelles voice, by wally's B voices and Wally K's incredible velvety accent- by the humor and honesty. i long to hear more- another project? and i can't wait to hear more commercial covers- i just want to hear joni everywhere!!! so the days were cool and sunny- and the nights so clear and clean- the milky way- the rising full moon on artlip lake- the feast of saint lawrence meteor showers (anyone remember that italian film- the night of the shooting stars?)- long streaks of light with shimmering golden tails blazing across the sky one night- outside the cook cabin- we were all gathered- doing dishes by kerosene lamp light, drinking in the night- big dipper hanging in the sky- watching the shooting stars- a plane blinking by... (sounds sort of like a song we're all anticipating)- smoking cigarettes... I excused myself to 'shake the dew from my lily' off in the bushes- when i heard the chorus to circle game drifting from the dishwashers... i ran back to join in, put on a harmony- which lead to free man in paris, to california, to the priest, to a case of you, to help me, to this flight tonight, to big yellow taxi, to for free, to conversation- to a bird that whistles, to just like this train to coyote.... on and on throughout the night- singing joni under the night skies.... soooooooooooooooo many joni fans joining in... we were dubbed the Joni's boys and one girl choir.... and bart told us about the puppet show he did- with puppets of joni, georgia o'keefe and bjork! a night in an unpaved paradise. six days of bliss- and i'm tired- but feeling refreshed. doug ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Aug 1998 23:51:56 EDT From: TerryM2442@aol.com Subject: Re: i'm back (VLJC) Doug, Great post! And I made a mistake. As it turns out, my grandfather did NOT die when Nixon resigned. Instead, my grandfather died on January 23rd, 1973 at 7:00 PM, but **still** it was during the "Lawrence Welk Show" when the show was interrupted, by Nixon, announcing the signing of the Paris Peace Agreement, which was interpreted as the end of the Viet Nam war. --JulieZW, who spent the week with family surrounded by all the wonders of the forest, while swimming, canoeing, hiking, playing scrabble and reading "The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood," browsing through a book on Feng Shui, and another on the organic/architectual philosophy of Frank Lloyd Wright and capturing 7 baby snakes, for my sons, who NOW have them in an insect box in their bedrooms across the hall as I type!!!
