I was born in 1970, and I LOVE so many cheesy 70's songs... I suppose the worst guilty pleasures are "Afternoon Delight", "Lovin You" by Minnie Ripperton, "Midnite at the Oasis", and, last but not least, "You make me feel like dancing" by Leo Sayer. For the 80's which I love, there are too many to mention, and I have a billion 80's cds that I listen to with headphones in case the sound wafts outside the window and the neighbors hear! However, I am a sucker, like Micheal, for all of Whitney's first album, especially "How will I know" and, I CANNOT believe I am actually admitting this, "Sara" by starship. I LOVE 80's new wave, and some guilty pleasures there are Nena's "99 Luftbalons", "My Heart goes Bang" by Dead or Alive, "Miss Me Blind" by Culture Club, "Obsession" by Animotion, and I listen to Berlin's "Lovelife" Album all the time. Oh yeah, and who can forget good old Howard Jones' "New Song"? Cheers, Evian NP: "Buffalo Stance" by Nenah Cherry, another blast from the past!! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 06:10:51 EDT From: LRFye@aol.com Subject: Garden-ing Hi All, I'm off this afternoon to New York to meet Kate from CO, my friends from San Antonio and California, and all the JMDLers who are able to make it to A Day In The Garden ... those of y'all who aren't able to be there physically, don't fret: you'll be well represented as friends of spirit ... One paragraph reads "..Fogelberg feels more comfortable at this point being likened to another L.A.-based composer, Joni Mitchell. "She's been a huge influence," he says without hesitation. "I've copped a lot of licks from her." Indeed, both artists use their voices similarly, alternating frequently between octaves, utilize abstract lyrical concepts, and even paint as a sideline. "It's 'Blue' 'Blue' 'Blue'," says an observer, citing a Mitchell album title, in describing "Nether Lands," which even sports an arty blue cover. As with Mitchell, the disillusionment and distraughtness that often comes in romance is Fogelberg's dominant lyrical theme..." - -------- Know a date or month specific Joni tidbit? A nice counter- point to Joni that would still fit the "sound." I think Dar Williams, Shawn Colvin, et al would unfortunately serve to perpetuate the inaccurate stereotypes of Joni's music and wouldn't really help to broaden her audience too much. I would love to see Chaka open just because I adore her and because she also will have a new project to promote, though she may have plans for her own head- lining tour or more dates with the Artist this fall. Joni's in a unique position in that her "legendary" status would confer headlining status upon her even though many potential opening acts (certainly Sarah McLachlan, for example) would actually be the bigger commercial draw at this point in time. I'll be completely self-serving and suggest Me'Shell NdegeOcello. I think a jazz/soul type singer-songwriter is really the way to go as it's more in line with the direction Joni's work has taken and has the potential to broaden her audience for the new recording, especially for tunes like "Harlem in Havana." Other random ideas: Lucinda Williams, Rufus Wainwright, Liz Phair ;-), Olu Dara, Holly Cole. I still think Cassandra's the best choice. Especially if they collaborate!
