HI List, Looks like Debbie (my best friend who just happens to be my wife) and I will be going to concert on Saturday. We would like to meet with and sit with you JMDLers. Can anyone give me more information on where to meet, events, etc.? What about starting a new thread about the original Woodstock. Where were you? I remember being 7 years old at summer camp in the Berkshires. Most of the people who ran the camp were liberals and hippies. The war was going on everyone was scared shit of being drafted. We sang Joni songs and all the other folkie and rock songs you can think of. . I remember some of the counselors did make it to Woodstock and told us stories about it. By the time I was eight I was doing Country Joe Fish's cheer (Give me an F! F!). It was a time when the sixties were NOT nostalgia, they were happening live right before your eyes... See you at the show! - -Brian PS. Don't have any extra tickets to sell but do have a 1967 VW camper that is in great shape and is for sale. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Aug 1998 08:59:46 +0000 From: "Deb Messling" Subject: randy scruggs Anyone heard this? Randy Scruggs is the son of famed banjo player Earl Scruggs, who joins his guitar-playing son and fellow string ace Jerry Douglas on a hot-picking version of Earl's ``Lonesome Ruben.'' That instrumental and a couple of others - the traditional ``A Soldier's Joy'' with Vince Gill, which builds masterfully from somber folk to twangy rock, and an elegiac take on Joni Mitchell's ``Both Sides Now'' - are among the highlights of this star-studded effort. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Aug 1998 06:00:31 -0700 (PDT) From: Brian Gross Subject: Re:Where were you in August 1969? Brian, My daughter and I made a huge banner that says JMDL (heart shape) Joni. Big bold letters and 8 feet long. I think I can say for sure that Amy, Kate and I will be under that banner, so look for that. >What about starting a new thread about the original Woodstock. Where were you? August, 1969. I was eight years old and up at our cottage on Burt Lake. It is where I was sent every summer instead of camp. I remember my older sister talking about Woodstock, but was pretty much oblivious to it until a few years later when I stumbled on the album in my sister's boyfriend's collection. Looking forward to the day! Let us all stay at the NORAINN! That was the first summer I got high. I was dating an actor at the Shakespearean Theater. That night we went to the San Diego County fair. It was the 4th of July. The boom as the fireworks were shot off lifted us off the ground where we were laying, watching straight up into the sky. It was amazing! Wild times that summer with "open air" concerts. And the beginning of my search for a new direction. I was so innocently trusting and open. My poor parents were flabbergasted! I know they must have been worried sick but they never hassled me. My mom had the patience of a saint! But their good little girl went back to college and lasted 1 year and 1/2 more, until my search eclipsed my academic pursuits. I *do* remember watching TV for all the news of Woodstock and seeing Joni on the Dick Cavett show. Her music had begun to be a part of my life. I was very surprised she hadn't been to Woodstock. Wonder if she regrets it? Diana, Who's feeling very old after going to watch one of my sons friends' band at the local bar and conversing with all the "little" boys that used to hang out at my house ( and fly out the windows when I came home unexpectedly) who are now "Men???". They were so nice and all came over to visit and buy me a drink. Amazingly, I don't have a hangover! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Aug 1998 10:22:30 -0700 From: Mark or Travis Subject: Re: Going to the Garden?/Where were you in August 1969? I've been a Joni Mitchell fan for most of my life. My taste in music is very broad (from heavy metal through Mozart), but I find myself drawn to Joni particularly in times of sadness or hardship. For introspective people, there is something about somebody else's melancholy, brilliantly expressed, which makes us feel stronger. I was pleasantly surprised to find, in the jmdl.com archive, several Kurt Vonnegut references. My login account name - which was a whim, and I sometimes wonder if it may perhaps have been a bit presumptuous (but, what the hell?) - gives me away as a fan immediately to anybody who has read Cat's Cradle. I guess it shouldn't have surprised me to find Vonnegut fans here; their writing has many similarities. Although Joni's emotions, as expressed in her art, run the full spectrum, while Kurt is a self-confessed monopolar depressive, they both look at life with open, critical, and unblinking eyes. What they see makes them sad sometimes, yet they remain strong and refuse to become hardened by it. Very admirable. I got a great smile from the post by "Laura the Womb Queen," as follows, ""... Ah, sweet Joni. Only your voice can make grocery shopping bearable. The shelf-stocking boys gave me strange looks when I started to sing along....not that it stopped me. ;)" \ Laura, I've had exactly the same experience, but imagine yourself a thirty-something man; then, put the store in San Antonio, Texas... strange looks indeed :-) Alan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Aug 1998 20:22:27 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Re:Where were you in August 1969? I was 15 turning 16 and don't recall anyone among my little group out here on the southern edge of the left coast knowing much about it. We all spent days and nights at the beach having parties and singing and listening to songs - especially lots from the (debut) CSN album, which was everyone's favorite at the time. The first I learned about Woodstock was from listening to the song on Ladies of the Canyon and CSN's Deja Vu the following year. Later that year I went with my boyfriend and several frinds to see the movie, which I recall was only playing at one theater in Hollywood. My favorite part was Jimi Hendrix doing that electrified Star Spangled Banner. When they refused I went to my friend's house for one of her Mom's famous grilled cheese sandwiches. Needless to say, a few other kids showed up and there wasn't enough bread. The oldest sister Barb, volunteered to go to the store. She set out to buy a loaf of bread but drove to New York instead. She got there in time to get caught up in the gridlock. She did hear some of Jimi Hendrix. She was grounded for two years after that. Have any of you read 'Barefoot in Babylon'? I read it about 10 years ago so I don't recall the author/authors.
