this latter claim clashes with your private vitriol to me.
But reading this is hopeful, for your keen interest in my projects has

my projects also.

Stan and Joni crossed paths in the late 60's before she was Joni Mitchell.
They played in a couple of the same venues, but not at the same time. The
reference in "So Blue" (from the Turnaround Album) was a tip of the hat to her
and her (subtle) influence on the structure of that tune.

Are there any other Joni fans on the JMDL who are also fans of Stan?

I am pleading the 5th for exactly who supplied me with 50 minutes
of aural bliss (I do NOT have an advance copy like that lucky
dog Michael just admitted to!), but I did hear LBalloon and
everything else in a closet at a picnic---and a stone soul picnic
it was!
She keeps repeating "Lead Balloon, lead balloon" on top of a heavy
rock beat with that grindin' geetar sound to it. It IS Joni at
her closest to Led Zep, now that you mention it!
I got the feeling she is saving her best for the release, as I
was blown away by this one, and it bores on my brain (at least
the chorus perseveration of the title).
Hey, Michael...old friend, old pal, old buddy....
About 120 of us are salivating like Pavlov's dog at the
words "advance copies", since any further delay of gratification
will render us most unhappy at your good fortune. HA! ;-D
I guess this does mean that the long-awaited and delayed
release really is going to happen come next month.

No conflict, really. I was actually interested in your
project ---the first time-- I read about it. I believe that was
well over a year ago. There is a significant difference,
however, between "hearing about" a project and being
repeatedly blugeoned over the head with self-congratulatory
posts that attempt to repackage outdated goods. Let no
opportunity be missed to pretend the outdated project is
relevent to the list. The pattern usually goes as follows:
Gee, (insert the Cheiftans, Joel Bernstien, Janet Reno...)
would love (insert outdated project here).
TR:
>But reading this is hopeful, for your keen interest in my projects has

I remember when a friend of mine bragged to me about
his child being toilet trained. At the time, it was probably
a significant point in the development of the child -but
I really did not need to hear about it. Thank God that
now, decades later, he is not still bringing this matter up
for discussion. I am sure the child was proud, but thankfully
he has gone on to other things. Perhaps there is a lesson
here for Horse Of Stone.
>so thanks and I'll be happy to clarify any lyrics that still elude you.
The lyrics don't elude me. I have a good handle on
them. They are pretentious and void of any shred
of emotional resonance. Hope that clarifies it for you.

Subject: My favorite Joni story
I've never had an informal street sighting, but I have seen Joni in concert
many times. Perhaps the most special was December 1997 when she taped a
fabulous segment for the CBS morning show. WFUV was giving away tickets, but
not being willing to leave it to chance, I pulled a few strings and got in
there with my husband. I brought a very small gift for Joni- a decorative egg.
I had given one to her after a show in 1973 (or so). Anyway, during the taping
one of the hosts was in the audience taking questions and during the break I
told him that I'd brought her a gift and asked if he could give it to her for
me. He was very nice and asked me to wait 'til after the show. So, after the
show, he was up on the stage with Joni and the other hosts and motioned for me
to come to the front of the audience. I did and he took the egg and gave it to
her, pointed to me and she waved. THEN the host named Mark (who I will forever
be grateful to!) motioned for me to come up onto the stage!! I did!! Well,
Joni thanked me for the egg, asked if I had painted it (I told her no, that it
was Mexican). I told her that I had given her one years ago and that I just
wanted to give her something because she has given me so much and that I love
her. She said "Oh, that's so nice!" and she HUGGED ME!!! I kissed her cheek on
the way in!!
Next to childbirth, this was a very high point in my life! When I'm feeling
low I try to remember everything about that day. I wish that I'd had it
together enough to remember a camera, or to get her autograph, but I wouldn't
trade the memory of that hug for anything!
This is an awfully long post, I just had to write/share it. Be seeing (some
of) you At The Garden!

Another possibility is that Joni spends so much time in the studio, massaging
the material to get it just right, that any money she earns goes to cover
studio costs. I'm certainly not defending major record labels. Jim asked
in another post about how many CDs Dar sells, and if they make a profit.
Ask Charlie Hunter, her manager. He is very open with this kind of info.
Perhaps the person on the Dar list could ask?
Anyway, remember that Joni's recording technique was forged in the days
when hit artists spent MONTHS in the studio, at God knows how many
dollars per hour, working on albums. She has in fact discussed composing
in the studio, which isn't a real good idea if economy is your goal.
My $0.02.
As far as this idea goes:

Good motivation, Jim, but I see HUGE legal and ethical problems with
that. Reprise pays people good money to get Joni's music into the
appropriate radio hands. I think that we can contribute by calling,
writing and e-mailing our local stations, requesting cuts from TTT.

Subject: A Bit more on the Joni\Jaco collaboration
This was found on Tom Stroud's excellent Jaco Pastorius Website at:
http://members.aol.com/tomstr/jacodiscog.html
It seems to indicate that Joni knew the exact bass sound she wanted and
Jaco's innovative playing seemed to fit the bill. It also seems to show
that Joni did indeed provide a lot of direction to her session players.
or to go directly to a wealth of Jaco\Joni info:
http://members.aol.com/tomstr/jacomisc.html#joni
Jaco with Joni
Question:
Do you miss Jaco Pastorius on your recording sessions?
Joni Mitchell:
Jaco was doing something I was dreaming of at the time that I came to work
with him. I kept asking
bass players to do certain things and they'd say "the bass doesn't do
that." Then I'd say "why?" And
they'd say "because it doesn't!" It seemed, in my field at that time--you
have to understand that I
started in this much music, the voice and the guitar.
There is much more music below it, and much music above it, symphonically
speaking. So just
myself and the guitar, we made about this much of the spectrum. So I began
to add up.
I started by adding up because I could do it myself, stacking vocal
harmonies, beginning to see how
harmony working moving upward, then stacking down within the limitations of
my voice and my
instrument. I needed help, so then I began to say to the bass player and
the drummer, "what if you
did this?" "Oh no, it doesn't do that."
They were very stubborn. Sonically, they were very stubborn. There were
things that were hip and
they wouldn't budge from them. They would not be "un-hip" because hip is
like a herd mentality. So
finally what I wanted the bass to do was more like symphonic music. Why did
it have to just stay
and poke a dot all along like fence posts? Why couldn't it lift up and play
counter-melody in the
middle and then come back down? OK, it's not like it has to drop out, just
seem to drop out, just go
into the mid-range so that the bottom gets some relief.
Nobody would do it. Then the beginning of synthesizers that you didn't have
to be a jet pilot to
operate began to appear and there was one in the hall that someone had
rented and it was waiting to
be picked up. I dragged it into the studio and put my own bass line on and
said, "OK," to the bass
player, "play this." And he said he wouldn't play it--it was wrong, he
said.
Then somebody finally said to me, you know, there is a kid that plays in
Miami--he plays with Phyllis
Diller and Bob Hope. He's really weird, you'd probably like him! So I sent
for Jaco and he was
doing everything that I wanted a bass player to do.

Subject: Yummy Sundae (a Parody)
Last week Bill's "Fat Free" inspired me to take a stab at writing a parody.
I've heard Joni introduce "Sunny Sunday" at a concert on one of the trees as a
song about a woman "waiting for a break".
This one might be introduced as the story of a woman "waiting for a shake" :-)
Yummy Sundae
(A Parody of Sunny Sunday)
She gets a plate, she wants another
Yummy Sundae
She's tried Danon Lite, it left a scar
Bright sprinkles melt away upon her
Yummy Sundae
She watches the Bosco boil
Then she grabs the Cool Whip from the fridge's door
And she aims at the ice cream
Adds some Hersheys kisses
Dogs bark as some nuts fall to the floor
It's ice cream she's yearning
Soon it will be dirty dishes
But as she spoons it in
Bliss and ecstasy
That one little sundae, that's all she needs
That's all she needs
She pulls the shade
It's just another
Sunny Monday
She drives to the ice cream store

Subject: your point taken
Yeah, Joni has sold more records than Dar does, and three years into her
career, she was a lot more famous than Dar is, but they are at different
points in their careers, and Dar's sales are continually increasing (she
tours incessantly, and she insists that she doesn't want to be famous
because she's in it for the long haul), and i don't think the same is true
for Mitchell right now. I don't know---did the Grammy boost her sales?
The point i was trying to make is the one Jim underscores: that Dar owns
herself as an artist, and her record company does not tell her what to do
or how to market herself or what her next album should sound like so her
career can stay alive. Joni owns herself as an artist (more than Dar does,
when it comes right down to production), too, but she obviously doesn't
have a good rapport with her record company---or her management or
whatever. Joni is also probably bitter that her fans abandoned her when she
had the audacity to change---everybody got off the bus and then she made
perhaps her best record ever and nobody heard it.
The last time i talked to Dar (April 19), she said that the pressure from
her record company to be more commercial was intense, but she is sticking
to her guns: she doesn't want to be famous. She wants to be around for a
long time, and that is not what happens to commercial artists. At the same
time, if they told her she wasn't selling enough records, she's probably
take her master tapes elsewhere. She has the option to do that because she
is an independent artist. Joni might say, yeah, and as such, she has the
option to starve. Relatively speaking.
True, the record company pays for Joni's expensive production time (true?),
and her albums are far more expensive to produce than Dar's are. I have a
fantasy about that, too, though. What if Joni got stuck in a studio with
only a piano and a guitar (acoustic) and had to produce an album?
Joni is in a system where the overhead is higher and where the commercial
interests and subsequent pressures are far greater, so her spoils are also
a bit more. The internet has leveled the playing field significantly in the
last few years by providing a free "commercial" market---in a way, i'm
advertising for Dar even as i type---where ads aren't as expensive as they
are in, say, Rolling Stone, and artists can be put before an increasing
number of people on a daily basis. Sound samples and little videos and
five-minute interviews available on the web have the potential to reach a
lot of people, and the investment is minimal.
I think for both Joni and Dar the first priority is artistic integrity,
then money, and when the two become inverted, both of them get pissed off.
"I guess I seem ungrateful
with my teeth sunk in the hand
that brings me things
i really can't give up just yet."
And perhaps she still can't give them up entirely.

Yes!
My parents are huge fans, and I grew up listening to Stan. I remember
clearly the night we found out that he died; it was in a plane crash in
Ohio, in the summer of 1983; there was a fire on the plane and most of
the people died from smoke inhalation. There were a lot of tears in my
house that night.
He wrote beautiful traditional-type songs about working men and sailors
and fishermen and farmers, and he had a beautiful voice that could break
your heart. He also wrote love songs, including one of most touching
love songs ever written, "Forty Five Years."
He is revered among Canadian folk singers.

"In portraying herself so starkly, she has risked the ridiculous to achieve
the sublime. The results though are seldom ridiculous; on Blue she has
matched her popular music skills with the purity and honesty of what was
once called folk music and through the blend she has given us some of the
most beautiful moments in recent popular music."

1994: Joni gives a press conference at the Edmonton Folk Festival.
Question: How do you like playing a small venue in Canada?
"I had a choice and I picked too gigs this year and Edmonton was one. It's
like coming home. The prairie is my home. Small things excite me like
wooden sidewalks and sneezing at goldenrod."

Joni and others have expressed puzzlement and disappointment that the
Grammy does not have the bank value of the Oscar in terms of boosting
sales, though no one seems to have a reason why.
I admit being totally in the dark about Dar -- but if she is, in fact,
'touring relentlessly' -- that's the tried and true way to make and hold
onto an audience. Of course, touring costs money too -- but if people
hear you live, it's FAR more likely that they'll go buy your latest CD
(if they don't buy it right at your show)-- Grammy winner or not. Not
that I'm advocating that Joni tour relentlessly -- a regular old tour
would suit me just fine!

Hi everybody,
I want to invite all of you who attend "A Day In The Garden" on August
15th to send me your reports on your day in Woodstock and on Joni's
performance. I'm also looking for photos from the event. Since I can't go
to the show myself, Sue MacNamara will be serving as the JMHP's official
reporter and will be posting her account to the page I'm designing for
the concert. More info next week!
Some news items:
The August 8th issue of Billboard magazine has an advertisement on
it's back cover for the ASCAP Member Card and includes tiny photos of
many of it's most famous members, including Joni. Now when I say tiny, I
mean it, so don't expect anything amazing or keepable. It is, however,
wonderful to see JM included. Joni, BTW, changed from BMI to ASCAP only a
few months ago.
Here's a few magazine sightings I fell behind in reporting:
The July 17th issue of Goldmine has a review of the May 22nd show at
the Pauley Pavilion in L.A. It's a positive report which says about
Joni's set-"Joni Mitchell spoke warmly to the audience throughout her set
and her performance brimmed with ideas, mostly coming from her comments
and her lyrics. If she did not play many of her best-known songs, she
played some of her great ones."
The August issue of Premiere magazine has an article on the infamous
club Studio 54, and features a photo of Joni and David Geffen from around
1977. Joni is good-naturedly fending off the cameraman with her upraised
hands while smiling broadly.
Later,
Wally

Wow, Doug, thanks so much for the kind words and glowing review. It was really
a fun gig, and Ingrid is always a treat. The song I wrote from a poem is The
Waking, poem by Theodore Roethke ... "I wake to sleep and take my waking
slow/I learn by going where I have to go." Hopefully that song will be on my
next album.
It was a thrill to meet you, albeit much too brief (we should get together and
hang sometime). I'm really glad you made it down, and glad I posted to the
list. In the middle of the gig, however, I realized that I had really screwed
up in not also posting to the Jonatha Brooke/The Story (with whom Ingrid
records and tours) list; too much scrambling to get ready for the gig, music,
rehearsals, negotiations with club owner, etc. ... I really need a personal
assistant.
Anyway, thanks again for such a nice report, extremely gratifying.

I really miss Eddie. I have some friends who played with him from time to time

Sorry, no tape running that I know of ... the music is lost in the ether.
Ingrid is indeed a wonder singer, and besides the two albums of mine that she

Joni Mitchell was singing solo on a daytime talk show (Joan Rivers? who
doesn’t have a current show) and when she was done singing, the camera showed
Joan and three black women guests (also singers?) who were wiping away tears.
In the evening of that same day, Joni is on the Tonight show, this time with a
band. She is wearing a long, flowing, diaphanous yellow outfit and a big
floppy hat, and instead of a guitar she held a 20 foot long, thin, upright
tree branch with two lavender parasols attached to it, one at the top and one
midway up. She whirled and danced around the stage with it as she sang. The
stage itself had large flowing sheets (of the same yellow diaphanous material
she was wearing) strung up from the ceiling down to the floor. When she
finished the song she walked toward the audience and gave the parasol pole to
a woman in the audience; the woman was vaguely Hispanic looking with thick
eyebrows and long, thick, curly black hair. She was clearly overwhelmed by
Joni’s gesture. I think that the woman was also a member of the Joni Mitchell
internet discussion list. After this, the camera showed Jay Leno and the same
three black women guests who had been on Joan’s show, and they were clearly
weeping. So was I by this point.

This list always amazes me, how many little things are brought up that I
can relate to or are a part of my history, that have nothing to do with
Joni.
I read that Roethke poem as part of a speech contest in 7th grade (I was
kind of an intense kid). I ended up going to the finals and reading it
in front of the whole school.
It's very close to my heart, that piece. I would love to hear your song,

$20 a month!
I am not sure of the veracity of this, but it seems pretty real to me.
I haven't heard about Instant Messenger, though.
On the subject of ICQ, it looks like no one uses it anymore! I used Instant

Hi, Kids --
As the day approaches, I've been getting many requests off-list for
various bits of information, so I'd like to cover several things here,
and for some folks it may be redundant and repetitive !^)
First, if you haven't signed up for the Garden list (and are planning
to make this event), please do so without delay by sending Les an e-mail
at garden@jmdl.com.
Item B, DO check out the DayintheGarden website post-haste at
http://www.dayinthegarden.com -- and if this won't load for you, try
http://www.dayinthegarden.com/mega.html. This site will answer most of
your questions (and has links to good local stuff re: transportation
and lodging), but if you need verification or have other specific
questions (or are simply incredulous about something you read there),
please ask the me&list. (Case in point: The previous bus line
cancelled, and HAS been replaced, but I think the Garden site still
indicates that there's no bus service -- e-mail me&the list if you need
details.) Sullivan County is a good resource as well --
http://co.sullivan.ny.us/sctg or 1-800-882-CATS.
Third: If you have a general request for info, tix, details about
ADayintheGarden, feel free to e-mail me, but please also post it to
garden@jmdl.com -- you may be able to get immediate help/answers. (I'm
in the process of moving, so I don't want anyone to go without clues
waiting on me.)
IV: Please start reading ALL your Garden mail as we careen toward the
Big Day -- I know this may seem like a chore for some people, and folks
are busy, yadda-yadda-yadda, but, again, it's for the efficient
transmission of relevant data (see under "Third...").
And now, on to some hellos and help --
Welcome: to Medric, Kai and Brian!
Tix: If anyone wants my extra ticket for Saturday -- buy me a beer or
watch my blanket for a while, and it's yours! Also, Deb Messling, Lori
Fye and Jan have posted about having extra tix -- please send a shout
out to them or the list, and I'm sure everyone will get covered.
Current list of Gardeners: If you're not on it and should be (or
vice-versa), please e-mail me directly -- I'd like to print out this
list to bring with me to NY so that if we have a get-together or some
happy need to share, I'd like to be able to find folks and hook people
up. I also ask you again to share your travel plans (arrival/departure
days/times, airport, hotel, etc.) if you haven't already done so. And
if you find this too invasive (just want info, no warm fuzzies or people
to meet), then I guess I'm stunned and speechless on the point...:^)

Thanks, Doug. Here it is.
======================================
The Waking
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.
We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.
Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me; so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.
This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.

Actually, I wouldn't mind hearing an explication of The Waking from Julie (or
anyone else who has two cents to give ... I've posted the complete poem in a
separate post). I mean, the gist of the poem is surely summed up in the
refrain "I learn by going where I have to go" but what about lines like:
"Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how?" and "This shaking keeps me
steady. I should know./What falls away is always. And is near." I get the
general sense of what he means but would like anyone's input on more specific
interpretations.
