Joni Sightings:
Back in about 1986 I saw her in the Village here in NYC, in red cowboy boots
and those unmistakable jawbones. She was outside an Italian deli and
obviously delighted. It was early morning and I decided not to bother her.
She was outrageously gorgeous with her hair and style.
Has anyone else spotted Joni? My ultimate has always been to see her in
concert though I'm not sure I could live through it (after all I fainted
after seeing my other hero, Aretha, in concert at Madison Square Garden).
But the Woodstock concert just seems too crazy to get to and her slot is too
short for enjoyment.
Tonite I scanned all the album covers I love....If anyone wants the JPGs,
just msg me at johnnym@earthcom.net and I'd be glad to forward them.
Thanks for your contributions.

I was thinking about Joni's believe that she's not turning a profit
for Reprise. In several Tape Trees she's been told that below a certian
volume, a title actually loses money. This really annoys me.
IMO, is she doesn't turn a profit for them, then 1.: their
accounting is awry, 2.) they are stupid money managers, or 3.) they are
liars.
Does anyone know about the small music labels in the USA? Is it
possible that one of the independents/audiophile companies like
Reference Recording or JVC or Rykodisk could put out an album for her
after Reprise.
Wouldn't it be a nice gift if we could somehow help promote the
album? Hey why don't we send unsolicited Tape Trees all over the
influential radio stations in USA, London. We'd have to pick one that
was totally live, no publishing problems. We could leverage our
geographic advantage to help her sell albums/CDs.

It seems like a general MOA tour decision on her part. I wonder if
it was just for that tour, or if she considers the song permanently
amended to "needles, guns, and lots o' laughs."

Subject: I'm Back
Hello Everyone-
Well I'm back from Honduras, and what an incredible trip it was. My
dad is doing great and we set some goals together and hopefully I am on
my way to moving back to Honduras within the next year to 18 months. I
was not able to access my worldnet account from down there, so I am
really behind in my reading. A few comments about what I am caught up on
so far:
Bill-Fat Free is brilliant. I'll be singing that one in the shower
tomorrow morning.
Kakki-Welcome back! Your trip sounded wonderful. I am still enjoying the
Hawaii you sent (Thanks again). It brought to mind my trip to Maui with
Fred, when Mikey was only 18 months old. We drove up to Haleakala sp?
and it was so amazing, Freda got some amazing pictures. There was also
the total eclipse of the sun which we saw almost entirely from our hotel
room without having to drive down to the so called "zone". Mikey still
remembers the trip or so he says.
Marsha-Gee I think you and Bill will look great sharing a throne
together!!!
Marian- Excellent work on the tunings. Thank you for sharing!
It's great to be home with the family and we had a great dinner talking
and making plans for our future. Now with the kids in bed, I thought I
would write a few lines to all my friends and share in the joy I am
feeling today. To put the icing on my cake and have a bite, I received
an advance copy of TTT today (from an angel in a music store) and it is
totally amazing. I will be first in line on September 29 to buy my copy,
and all my friends are getting TTT for Christmas. I think that whoever
was saying that Joni has lost her voice will be pleasantly surprised. I
hear alot of the old qualities she had and alot of new ones that I
cannot put to words just yet. I think my faves are Stay In Touch and
Taming the Tiger. I love the song Love Puts On A New Face so much, but I
have to admit that I like the Jay Leno Live version better (I guess
cause I have played it so much I am use to it in its raw form)
Hope everyone is well and best wishes to all the garden goers.
Love to all,
Michael

Glad you decided to make it after all! Do sign up for the Garden List
if you've not done so already (garden@jmdl.com). At this point, I would
actually recommend not purchasing a ticket to the festival for Saturday
(blasphemy?) -- there is a tsunami of folly going on with this fest,
although my faith will not be shaken! I just got a free ticket for
Saturday when I'd requested one for Friday (per the recent 2-for-1
deal). The festival folks promised they'd mail out my free ticket for
Friday as I'd requested, but I may have a free ticket to give away on
Saturday, and I know there are other Gardeners with extras as well.
As for travel out to Bethel from LaGuardia, there will be bus service
via the Shortline Bus Line out of the Port Authority, leaving at 8AM on
Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Aug. 14, 15 & 16). Round-trip cost is $40,
and bus tix can be purchased at the PA. (The bus service originally
scheduled, the DIG Express, pulled out of the festival at the last
minute.) But if you're arriving LaGuardia on Thursday night, do let me
know, as a couple of us are working out some ground travel plans from
the airport up to our respective hotels in the Bethel area that night.
I'm sorry to hear that you're having problems accessing the Sullivan
County website (http://co.sullivan.ny.us/sctg)-- I'm about to cancel a
hold I had on a room at the Best Western in Monticello (I'm booked at
the Starlite in Mongaup Valley) -- if you'd like to catch this room
($105/night, possibly a two-night minimum), let me know, and I'll try to
coordinate my cancellation with you.
If you need any other help, give a shout!

Deb Thornton discussed the quality of Dar Williams art and

Ain't it great?! Marsha mentioned "Lead Balloon" earlier - if Mr. Dulson will
allow me to be Swami-ette here, I predict this song as a definite hit - rip
roaring rock 'n roll. Other predictions - at least Grammy noms or wins for TTT
artwork and album, and a definite nom for the new CPR album.
Another recommendation for great music listening - Livingston Taylor's "Ink" in
which he covers of some of the most beautiful songs of our time. Gorgeous. If
you love James, you'll love Livingston, whose music is a little like a
whimsical and upbeat version of his brother's. (Amazing how he, James & Ben
all have that same voice!)

Published Sunday, August 2, 1998, in the San Jose Mercury News
BY DAVID L. WILSON
Mercury News Staff Writer
The danger posed by the devastating hole in some of the most popular
electronic mail software in the world likely will persist for many months,
or even years, putting many thousands of people at risk.
The extremely widespread nature of the flaw, which was revealed publicly
last week, combined with the difficulty of ensuring that patches for the
flaw get installed, is likely to make the Internet a much less stable
environment as malevolent Internet users begin using the flaw to disrupt
activities on the Internet.
The situation illustrates the difficulties of developing secure systems,
particularly as the software that runs on computers gets more complex and
unwieldy. And it's a taste of the difficulties that lie ahead as more and
more of the nation's everyday activities become tied to the Internet.
The flaw allows an outsider to send a booby-trapped piece of electronic
mail. Under some conditions, the booby-trap can be activated without any
action on the part of the victim. The poisoned e-mail can execute code on
the targeted computer, up to and including erasing the hard drive.
One self-described member of the ``black hat'' hacker community -- black
hats are malevolent hackers, sometimes known as ``crackers'' -- said his
group is working on a number of variants of booby-trapped e-mail. The
plan, he said, is to send out thousands of such booby-trapped e-mails to
users around the world.
Bomb has two stages
The payload on these bombs would be delivered in two stages. In stage one,
the booby-trapped e-mail directs the host e-mail application to send out
thousands more booby-trapped e-mails. Once that task is completed, the
original e-mail will attempt to reformat the host hard drive to complete
stage two, which is designed to make tracking the assault back to its
originators that much harder. All those new e-mails will attempt to do the
same thing on any host computer where they become active, creating a tidal
wave of assaults throughout the Internet that could bring things to a
grinding halt.
Experts say it may not be an empty boast. ``Clearly the person has some
idea what's involved,'' said Eugene H. Spafford, director of the new
Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security at
Purdue University. ``But this would not be a trivial thing to do.''
The description of the attack is strikingly similar to a technique used 10
years ago by Robert T. Morris, a graduate student at Cornell University,
to bring down the entire Internet using an electronic ``worm,'' a bit of
software whose only goal was to spread through the system and make copies
of itself. Patches for the holes exploited by Morris soon were deployed.
The current e-mail problem is different in that the fix isn't aimed at the
high-powered machines that keep the Internet humming but on the standard
desktop machines, which often must be serviced one by one.
``We would rank it as a fairly significant problem, one that's unusual
because it affects consumer-level software more than the kind of software
that internet service providers might run on their server machines,'' said
Shawn Hernan, leader of the vulnerability handling team at the CERT
(formerly the Computer Emergency Response Team) Coordination Center at
Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute.
Many people suspect that the problem will be around for many months
because people will fail to install the patches as they become available
or neglect to upgrade their e-mail software.
Update -- or else
``Now that the crackers know how to exploit this, people who don't update
will be hurt,'' said Paul E. Hoffman, director of the Internet Mail
Consortium. ``Unfortunately, that might be the majority of people.''
Corporate computer system administrators today often find themselves
overwhelmed inside a company. Security concerns often take a back seat to
the more pressing matters of installing a bigger hard drive or monitor.
``We have no plans to patch company-wide immediately,'' said David Hart,
who works in the Internet industry. ``We'll probably patch laptop users
right away because they go for longer periods of time without hard drive
backups. We'll probably roll out Communicator 4.5 (with the patch
included) in October or November. Our network is set up in a way that
damage caused by a hack would be reduced and more easily reparable
compared to most other PC network configurations,'' he said. ``Please
don't print my employer's name. I'd hate someone to interpret my boast as
an invitation to hack.''
Long time to create patch
The flaw has been confirmed in three programs: Microsoft Corp.'s Outlook
Express and Outlook 98 and Netscape Communications Corp.'s Messenger Mail,
which accompanies versions 4.x of the Communicator Web browser software.
Researchers are continuing to study other software packages to see which
are vulnerable and under what circumstances.
Oftentimes a patch for a security hole can be created within a day or two.
Because of the variety of ways this flaw can be exploited, it's taking
companies an exceptionally long time to build something that guards
against all the possible permutations, yet doesn't interfere with function
or create new problems.
Experts remain concerned that users will be less likely to install the
patches if the process takes too long.
``Vendors need to be very proactive in getting the word out,'' Hernan
said. ``This story has received a lot of public attention, so there is
some hope that it will get a larger level of the public mindshare.''
