Phyliss wrote: <> I would be absolutely thrilled to get a Digital Video Disc (DVD) player for *my* birthday. October 28th for anyone feeling so inclined :-). Certainly, Santa will put a more reasonably priced unit under the tree for me later this year, if I work and play well with others. It is the end of the world as we know it for the VHS tape format. DVD is to VHS videotape as CDs are to LPs. By year's end more than a million households in the US will have one. Don't throw those VCRs out yet though. You can't record with DVD, yet. But it's a little known fact that most people use VCRs as tape players and rarely record. I asked myself how many times I have recorded with my VCR, which I've had for 2 years. Survey said: zero. (Your mileage may vary.) Still, it's a feature most people insist on. Also, since the DVD format was just introduced in March 1997, only 1500 movies are currently available on DVD. Which is less than 10% of what's available on VHS. But that will rapidly fade, as movie studios are salivating at the chance to repackage and resell their entire libraries as new. Just like record companies did with CDs. Qualitatively speaking, the DVD picture is far superior to VHS on any TV or monitor. The digital playback system stores more component details in the picture than analog VHS does. DVD provides 500 horizontal lines of resolution, more than twice the number offered by VHS tape. More detail, better visuals. Let's talk audio. You get 5.1 audio channels on DVD. With VHS: two. You can easily have the equivalent of a movie theater experience at home if you have a surround sound receiver and speakers. Dialog, sound effects and music tracks can be played through two speakers in front, two in the rear , one in the center and a low frequency bass. Of course, you can also play your music CDs on the DVD player. Other facts: - - No rewinding with DVD (it's digital) - - Discs sell for around $15 -$20, rent for the same as VHS tapes. - - Blockbuster just anounced they will now rent them. - - DVDs come in double formats: standard-size picture which fills the whole TV screen (cropped to fit), or letter-box format that shows everything that appeared on the theatre screen. - -A Company called NetFlix on the Internet (http://www.netflix.com) stocks every DVD title available on the market. They rent by mail. Films rent three for $13.00 for a full week and are assured delivery within 3 days anywhere in the US. Return postage is pre-paid. Expect a very DVD Christmas this year. Prices will likely drop for DVD players as they are mass produced in anticipation of the buying boom. "Titanic" is expected to spur DVD player sales and be a runaway hit when it is released on DVD come the holidays. - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 11:41:47 +-100 From: Hassan Zubairi Subject: Joni in Literature Just to remind me: In 'Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit' by (I can't remember - is it Angela something? or Janet something? I would love to hear Joni sing Surabaya Johnny by Brecht/Weill. It's from the musical Happy End and it's kind of an alto song. It's a lovely moving torch song type thing and I believe that it was a pop standard in the early sixties. With the original scoring and arrangements I believe that Joni could work wonders on this tune. If anyone knows this piece of music and agree/or disagree than lets discuss. Also on the recent interview lovingly sent by Rob. I think there was a clue as to how unchanged Joni's text was taken in the title: 'Unfiltered Joni Mitchell'. It seems she has a pop at journalists who take what she says and edit from that to get the lowdown. The fact that you can actually hear Joni say those words, the way she says them (those quite complicated and sometimes tangential sentences she uses) have been preserved seem testament to the fact that this journalist has taped and taken down verbatim Joni's words. Well done that man. Well done Rob for letting other people across the pond who can't get their Mojo early. One of them is a noise reduction circuit that has been developed for consumer cassette decks. Dolby A would be the first version, B, the second...etc. If you use Dolby C on a tape that was not recorded in Dolby C for example, you will lose a lot of high frequency information on playback. For best results use the form of Dolby that was origenally used on that particular tape. It is a crude circuit at best, however, but can help with really noisy or poorly recorded tapes (ones that were recorded at too low a recording level). Dolby noise reduction is not to be confused with other Dolby products like Dolby sound for cinema or the illustrious producer/artist Thomas Dolby. Have a good day. They're expected to replace the CD ROM market within 3 years. CDs and CD ROMs can be played on DVD-ROM drives, but DVD-ROM discs won't play on CD players or CD ROM drives. DVD-ROM drives come standard on most new PCs for like $100 extra, but you can also get a DVD-ROM kit from Creative Labs for $230 u.s. dollars that includes a 2 speed DVD-ROM drive, software and a plug-in card that decodes Dolby digital AC-3 audio and MPEG-2 video. MPEG-2 is a new higher video standard for PCs. Sounds pretty cool, but I haven't seen one yet. I think I might go run the computer store gauntlet today to take a look. - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 14:09:40 -0400 (EDT) From: kb420@webtv.net (gr8fuldave) Subject: auction notice (NRH press kit) Joni Mitchell-Night Ride Home-Press Kit Seller: rebco@buffnet.net Starts: 07/22/98 18:03:20 PDT Ends:   07/27/98 18:03:20 PDT Price: Currently $9.99 To bid the item, go to: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=22403206 Item Description:                The Night Ride Home press kit contains 1 page (2 sides) text information about Joni and the LP, and 1- 8 x 10 photo. For some reason I just must have subconsciously appended 'of youth' to the end of it all these years, probably after having heard of the Tennessee Williams play from somewhere . Come to think of it, I've just remembered I do have a book of some of his plays in the house somewhere, that someone lent me as I enjoyed 'Streetcar' so much. Let me just go check if Sweet Bird is in it, just a mo.......... ............................ ..........yep, here it is - Sweet Bird of Youth and two others, and it was probably lent to me round about the time I first taped HOSL, so I guess I made the erroneous association then and there, sometime back in the mid 80's. Now, I can't remember, does Joni actually sing the whole phrase 'sweet, bird, of, youth' in the song? Maybe that also tricked me. But the real interesting question is where is Vettriano the artist coming from in making this same slip up. That is, considering he's also painted at least two other HOSL songs that we know of. It's too much of a coincidence that he could simply be a Tennessee Williams fan as well. Or is it? Why shouldn't he be? Or is Joni herself a Williams fan? (well frankly, who isn't?) Of course, seeing as I'm the one sitting here with the Sweet bird of youth script on my desk, I guess you'll all be expecting me now to start combing through the script searching for tie-ins with Joni's song! Gee, I fell into that one! >From: catman >>Dolby is a noise reduction technique they use on cassette tapes-it cuts >out hiss etc but also cuts out the treble, as far as I can hear. I never >use it. I'm with Colin on this one. In fact I go one step further and always record with Dolby on but always playback with it off, which is more hissy than ever! - But at least you get that top end bright and clear. If I was a hi-fi nut with a five thousand dollar system I'd probably play by the rules and use Dolby as it's supposed to be used, instead of abusing it. I suppose Dolby was chiefly developed for classical music hi-fi buffs, who would prefer a natural 'flat' reproduction of concert hall sound, unlike rock which is all about driving bass and crisp, heavy attack resonance on drums and cymbals. But just to end on a sinister note, a lot of us rock'n'rollers are half deaf anyway from listening to the stuff too loudly for too long - The deafer we get, the less we can hear the hi-hat and the maracas, so we keep turning the treble up and switching the Dolby off. The power of the "tiger" exposed to real life. Joni in the flesh. The entertainment business and Joni have had such an incredible influence on me in general. I think. I admit. Not as if it is the most fashionable thing to admit to being a television viewer or a Joni admirer, detracting from one's intellect or "hip" on call. I am a regular viewer/listener however, and I feel as if I have a better concept of the size of a sound stage. That I know better than ever, that Captain Picard is really just a character, no matter how one chooses to identify with him, just from physically being in LA. It's all just a really powerful show. So, I'm reviewing Joni's set list which includes a lot of the same Shadows and Light material (as if she's branded Hejira as a pinnacle for herself, which to me seemed to be the underlying structure of the show) and I anxiously await her next peak. Should she be able to realize it. My point being, that I feel wiser (I hope) now. I am not some star-infatuated teen swooning over Joni in my bedroom in an idolizing mental posture. "Oh it's not like I was blind I saw But I took no action" Lori in San Antonio ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 20:40:14 -0700 From: Mark or Travis Subject: Joni in literature Has anyone read 'The Drifters' by James Michener? Believe it or not this book was an important influence on me when I first read it in the summer of 1972. That was the summer after I graduated from high school. I had spent my early teen years as a very straight-laced, nerdy kinda kid who thought that the war in Viet Nam was justified (after all we had to stop the spread of communism, didn't we?) Of course facing the possibility of being drafted (I was in the very last lottery but had a high number) started me wondering if it really was such a necessary thing. I also had become very fond of my cast album of 'Hair'. Then I read 'The Drifters'. It was Michener's attempt to describe the generation that was a few years older than me. The novel centered on 6 people in their late teens to early twenties, travelling around Europe and Africa. One is a draft dodger, one is a young woman who was brutalized by police in the aftermath of the riots at the 1968 Chicago Democratic convention, another is a young Norwegian woman who seeks escape from the long dark winters of her native Tromso, another a black man who has been involved with a radical group in Philadelphia, another a young Jewish man with duo US/Israeli citizenship and the sixth is a young English woman whose father was a diplomat in some former British protectorate African nation. The narrator is an older man named George. He is of the 6 drifter's parents' generation and is friends with some of those parents. He has met four of these six young people before and is sort of an uncle to two or three of them. Anyway he runs into them in various places (Spain, Portugal, Mozambique, Marrakech) and becomes somewhat familiar with the music they listen to. He's listening to a stack of records playing in an American bar in Torremolinos and has this to say at one point: I was sitting in the bar one day when Joe dug deep in his pile of records and came up with 'Michael from Mountains,' a song so crystal-pure and simple, so beautifully sung by a girl with a natural voice, that I felt exalted by the good feeling it produced. What was it? Only an unpretentious song about a young girl who watches a strange boy from the mountains and the things he can do with nature. She has a premonition that one day in the distant future she may know him very well. It was one of the realest songs I had ever heard, something that Schubert might have written. So Michener was a Joni fan back then before he started churning out books like they were so many hotcakes. When I first read 'The Drifters' I had never heard 'Michael from Mountains' and only knew Joni Mitchell as the composer of 'Both Sides Now' and 'I Don't Know Where I Stand'. I came across this quote a few years back when I reread the book to see if it still had any meaning for me and I just about fell on the floor. I had to look it up tonight so I could share it with you all. Sorry I rambled on for so long.
