She invited me to see their final show last night at her school in Santa Monica. It was a very professional production and Mariana was in perfect voice and step. Her theater group has performed twelve shows in the last week for people confined to hospitals, children with AIDS and even a group of ex-cons living in a rehabilitation facility. (I heard that the ex-cons were their most enthusiastic audience and gave them several standing ovations). It was fun to see her school - the scene of so many stories she has shared with us. It is pretty neat and very eclectic. One building is a Frank Gehry-designed wildly cubist chrome and glass structure painted lavender and yellow while another is a traditional ivy-covered old brick building. It seemed like a very unique and creative environment. She is leaving early this morning to live in Cuernavaca, Mexico for a month studying Spanish and told me that she would try to find a way to send emails of her adventures to the list while she is away. I also developed a crush on Mr. Kennedy and had to tussle with Patrick for control of the binoculars a few times during his performance. ;-) Mind-blowing voice, gorgeous and oozing major charm. Sigh. I bet even Joni had a little crush on him herself. Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jul 1998 18:54:38 +0200 From: "Nixon" Subject: Tube - Scottish artist paints Joni songs Hey Gang, Long time no e. Just made an interesting discovery so I thought I'd break silence again. Actually it's such a pleasant and totally Joni discovery that you guys probably know about it already, but in case you don't, here it is anyway. I just discovered a Scottish artist by the name of Jack Vettriano and among his work are two paintings (and probably more that I don't know of yet) titled after Joni songs, namely "Edith and the Kingpin" and "Sweet bird of youth". 'Edith' is available as a postcard in a set of five from IKEA furniture stores here in Italy, and probably in England as well, or anywhere in the world that has IKEA. 'Sweet bird of youth' I have not seen yet, and only know of its existence after cruising the web looking for Vettriano information and an image of 'Edith' to attach to this mail to y'all. Sadly the relevant images could not be found, but now you know the name to watch for, you can start searching yourself. Personally I relly love this man's work (it's very Hopperesque), and he's obviously hooked on Joni, (or perhaps, like myself, more specifically on Hissing of Summer lawns than on Joni in general) and if you want to get a peep of the man's style, you can catch it at: http://www.postershop.com/artist/vettriano_e.htm or: http://www.cybercomm.nl/~vandeijk/art/art.htm One of the images on Mr Vandeijk's page may be 'Sweet bird of youth', but as they are not named, I cannot tell which, if any. My boss here in Rome is threatening to buy a scanner for the office, and if he does, be sure I will try to get 'Edith' scanned and posted to the JMDL for your viewing pleasure in the next few weeks. (sjc) well, i remember kakki making sure i had her industrial strength binocs at appropriate moments. she's such a sweetie. part of the fun was to watch him dance, pretty damn good but again, kind of innocent and sweet. and, as martha says, the body doesn't lie. patrick np - reich - electric counterpoint - metheny ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jul 1998 13:50:33 -0500 From: Mark Domyancich Subject: Audiophiles-Dolby (NJC) Hi everyone- Another question with *hopefully* at least 1 reply. When I was signing up for the Tape Tree, I was wondering: just what is Dolby and why is there B, A, etc.? I said "no preference" and that was probably the best answer. However, she performs Sweet Bird on The Refuge Of The Roads video, and it is listed as "Sweet Bird Of Youth." I have always wondered whether this is the "full title" of the song or merely a typo on the ROTR video. It is conceivable that the person responsible for putting the track list onto the video was a Tennessee Williams buff, and simply *thought* the song was called "Sweet Bird Of Youth" like the TW play. Why, after all, would the LP, CD, sheet music book and Complete Poems and Lyrics Book all have an "incomplete" title? BTW, there is an excellent discussion of the song and its possible meanings in the Archives section of Les' site, under Threads, from last December. And one JMDLr mentions that the song possibly alludes to the Tennessee Williams play. -Kenny On 7/26/98 3:10PM,Bolvangar@aol.com wrote: "Sweet Bird of Youth" is actually the title of a Tennessee Williams play and a film adaptation (Academy Award winning, no less). I never use it. I have B and C on my deck. C is even worse for cutting out music too. I find if I use chrome tape and record from a cd, i don't get much unwanted noise anyhow. Mind you i guess my tape machine is reduntant anyway with the cdw. colin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Jul 1998 08:56:33 +0200 From: M.Russell@iaea.org Subject: Updates to Tuning Patterns - attention guitarists! First I'd like to thank everyone who visited my JM Tuning Patterns page since I launched it last Friday. Secondly, I just wanted to say that I will be making changes to this page whenever I discover something new, or if someone sends me corrections that I totally agree with, so you might want to bookmark the page and check it occasionally to see if there is anything new. Since I launched this page on Friday, I have made three changes, one which came from Ken Slarty. http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/4293/jm_tunings.htm Thirdly, I welcome any suggestions for corrections to the tuning patterns, as well as any suggestions for improving the page format. At the moment, I'm showing the changes I have made at the top of the page with a date and time, but I may not keep this as a running historical list as it might be kind of confusing to people who go to the page for the first time. Any ideas?
