Like Joni he has been successful in two different mediums. With Joni it has been painting, with Jimi it has been writing. Jimmy e has just written a new book titled, A Pirate looks at Fifty. Definitely, a beach book.. This new book is a journal with many short chapters. In Pirate, time is not linear, but circular. He jumps from the past to the present and back with ease. If your a Buffet fan or an artist you will probably enjoy this book. Jimmy has also just released his album, "Don't stop the Carnival". It is a musical he wrote based on Herman Wouk's novel "Don't stop the Carnival". I remember reading it years ago when I was attending the College of the Virgin Islands in St. Thomas and majoring in beach bum. It is about a man who moves to the tropics and buys an inn and all the adventures and misadventures that befall him in the lower latitudes. The musical is upbeat. A veritable mardigras on CD. Enjoy, Brian PS. Has anyone been to a Jimmy concert this summer? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Jul 1998 05:12:01 PDT From: "Ben Mulvey" Subject: Joni Covers Album & Possibilities - Madonna strange as it may sound, I'd love to hear Joni cover some of Madonna's stuff especially. on 'Ray of Light', hearing Joni do songs like 'Subtitute for love' or 'To have and not to hold' would be good. I think Madonna has come a long way musically, so the idea is not so strange as it sounds. Actually, I think our Joni is an influence on Madonna. I'm sure I remember reading somewhere on Wally's site that C&S was her favourite album when she was a teenager. Early this year when she was launching ROL, she did an interveiw on MTV Asia I caught in the Philippines. MTV have Casey Casem's son as VJ out here, so he was doing the interveiw (the guy is a dork, you could tell Madonna just totally knew that, but she was surprisingly patient). Anyway as some point in the interveiw Madonna answers a question he asks with the line "Songs are like tattoos you know" Obviously this caught my attention straight away, but it was strange, Madonna sort of looked like she was going to go on with this answer, but she kind of fumbled for a couple of seconds - and went off in some completely different direction, Hmmm - I'm sure there must be a big stack on Joni CD's wherever Madonna keeps her collection. Since neither Teletubbies nor Pulp are big in the US (which is where the majority of people on the JMDL list seem to be based), I don't know how valuable it'd be. But, if anyone wants to see it, I'll post it. Picking up a previous thread about hearing Joni in public places, I was in one of my local eateries (The World Cafe in Crouch End, North London, as you ask), and guess what? When did we get enough. Why does it have to be rhythmicly or harmonicly esoteric. I can think of several reasons for Joni to cover swing tunes any way she wants: *It's fun to sing with an orchestra. *Lots of people may be exposed to swing that may not otherwise have. *Joni is smart enough and creative enough to innovate, thus adding to the heritage of swing. *Joni is an incredible singer who has yet to exploit all the contemporary and relevant forms of expression. Thats enough for me. We already did the Beta thing and I don't want to do it > again! I purchased a Sony DVD player last December and have since fallen quite in love with the format. While I doubt it will replace VHS anytime soon, I think it's early adoption record is indicative of a format that is here to stay. Also, it's not just being adaopted by technophiles. The local MediaPlay has a HUGE secion devoted to DVD and it is regularly frequented by normal, everyday people...compared to 6-8 months ago when I felt like the only one in the world buying DVD movies. Virtually all major film companies support it (FOX is the only one that comes to mind that doesn't yet, though I don't believe Disney has released any of it's animated features on DVD yet. Paramount just announced support, as well). In my area, movie prices average anywhere from $18-25 and the discs offer a lot of extra features over normal VHS. Many discs offer Behind The Scenes commentaries, Trailors, extra footage,etc... DVD discs are dual sided and many feature P&S viewing on one side (normal viewing) and a WideScreen version on the other. Additionally, Blockbuster Video has already begun renting discs in several areas with additional roll outs occuring over the summer. I must disagree with someone else who claimed it offers little benefit for the average viewer. I currently have two players(one up stairs, one down) connected to 5-6 year old Televisions and have found the video to be MUCH clearer compared to a copy of the same movie on VHS. You should not look upon DVD as a VHS replacement but rather as a valuable addition to your home entertainment, much as CD's and cassettes still share shelf space. I think it would make a wonderful present. (sjc) i got the august mojo this morning! this article is stunning! as you can guess, it's a lot of pages, and there are tonnes of pictures. i think the one that makes me the happiest is of her and bjork at the walden pond benefit. bjork is waiting for her verse and joni is in full cry, eyes closed. her hair looks so damn good with that loose curl, the dress is truly stunning, and the face is the face of a woman who should sing music older than her a hell of a lot more often. a treasure. the layout and selection of photography is really skillful. clever arrangements, like putting snaps of her likes (coward, piaf, mingus, holliday and nyro) together, and couple shots of her with graham, larry and don right next to an answer that begins, 'they're all wonderful men, though'. of course, the interview is going to be a read and reread. for me a well-written interview or profile about someone interesting eventually becomes just a celebration of human possibility. i get all mushy. i can't think of an american magazine that has done such a beautiful spread on an artist i care about. this is just wonderful, i'm not nearly as much of a collector as some of you but this is a keeper. if anyone else would like me to pick up a copy, email me privately. the cover price was $7.50 about brian kennedy. thanks for the tidbit, sean. especially nice to hear about the compliment from kate. it makes sense that joni would know about him, and she probably enjoyed his singing as well. for all her interest in the roughness of piaf, late billie and her own mature voice, she loves a lush man's sound. kennedy's singing reminds me more than a little of michael mcdonald's. a little more tenorish, but they're both just juicy, rich voices, with the same strengths. emotions on their sleeves, but not in a shallow way like bolton, mariah, or esp. that other sinking one. some jmdlers who saw the shows in la knew, by the end of the run, that i had a major crush on m. kennedy. he has a kind of gawky but endearing sense of showmanship. grooves to every moment of every song. he announced the bows at the end of van's sets, and his 'ladies and gentlemen, mr. van morrison' was so overblown and sweet. ever hear the guy who announced the acts at birdland? same doofy charm. third rock across the pond. i babysit a darling one-year old girl, and teletubbies have saved many an afternoon for us. they're here.......... the show does seem to stun the young 'ns into a stupor, but i make daisy stand and dance when they do their little routine. she can already do the temptation shuffle. this is a good thing. patrick np - glenn gould - goldberg variations (1952) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jul 1998 00:32:12 -0600 From: Les Irvin Subject: TapeTree 7 open for sign-ups Hi Joniphiles - TapeTree #7 - The "Real Good, For Free" tree - is now open for sign-ups for leafs.
