This year, I had students who still didn't know what a verb was by the end of the term. Let me just say that all of the TA's rejoice when we can stop teaching grammar and move onto literature, since we cannot try to teach the rules of the English language in 2 weeks. Indeed, to be honest, even I do not know the proper uses of who/whom unless I am teaching that particular lesson -- it is something that just doesn't seem to want to stay in my head!>> This issue came up more than a year ago when I was teaching English at a local business college here in Jacksonville and remarked about how little my students knew of grammar. It was they who pointed out that iliterature, not grammar is taught in high school. I had spent more thna a dozen years as a copy editor on a daily newspaper. While my knowledge of grammar and usage was strong, it was difficult to teach because I had to go back to such basic levels, even for college students, though granted it was a business colege and these were not top students. While it is true that the language evolves, most of the evolution is to the detriment of the finer points of language, I am afraid. And one of the primary reasons for said evolution is because so few people are taught it well. I suppose it is also true that not enough emphasis is placed on teachers' knowledge of grammar, so that they could impart their knowledge correctly. Paul I Anyway, the point I want to make is that our conceptions of the English language are changing. Schools tend to be dropping literature programs at an alarming rate, and thus it is no wonder that we often do not know the "proper" rules of English. >> ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jul 1998 14:23:29 -0600 From: Today in Joni History Subject: Today in Joni History - July 12 1983: Joni performs at the CNE Bandshell in Toronto. A setlist and review by James Leahy can be found at: http://www.jonimitchell.com/Toronto83.html 1993: (from Wally's bio): [Today], Joni made an appearance at the Beverly Hilton in Hollywood at comic legend Milton Berle's 86th birthday party. She sang "Night Ride Home" in front of a roomful of comedians and Hollywood legends. See a few photos at: http://www.jonimitchell.com/BerleBirthday93.html 1994: (from Wally's bio): The supermarket rag "The Globe" had this headline in [today's] issue - "Songbird Joni Searches For Love Child She Had At 19." It was only that year that Joni had begun to talk about the child she gave up for adoption in 1965. Joni told "Vogue" magazine: "I had had a child, and I was broke, literally penniless. And I met Chuck Mitchell, and he said he would take us on. I was kind of railroaded...we were never suitable. I went down the aisle saying 'I can get out of this.'" She did soon divorce Chuck, after she'd also given up her daughter for adoption. - -------- Know a date or month specific Joni tidbit? True enough. Furthermore, it is rude and unkind to do so even if you ARE a parent, teacher or editor, unless the correction is done for the benefit of a child, a student, or a writer, respectively. Recently an acquaintance of mine (who is an English teacher) took it upon herself to correct the grammar of someone in attendance at a barbeque, and the correction was not well received. This resulted in several unpleasant and awkward minutes for everyone within earshot. Obsessive-compulsive behavior of this sort is best left at home, and not displayed at social occasions. Great authors have editors and proof readers to minimize the impact of their mistakes. My wife (now deceased) was a professional editor. She knew more about the English language than I will EVER know, and my command of the idiom is substantial. She was always able to find hundreds of grammatical errors in any author's manuscript, even manuscripts by renowned and experienced writers of non-fiction. I can always find grammatical errors in my own writing if I re-read anything I wrote that's more than two weeks old. I can find grammatical errors in my wife's letters, and she was about as close to perfect (in matters of grammatical structure) as one becomes. If you think you're an exception, submit to me a 250 word essay (on any subject) less than 24 hours old that only YOU have read (i.e., no proof reading by parties other than yourself prior to your submission). I will change your mind. I just wrote this post. I have read it and I'm about to send it. It's about 5 minutes old. How many grammatical errors can you find? I'll summarize and post the results to the group. Brian ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jul 1998 14:21:00 -0700 (MST) From: Phil Gibbs Subject: Morning Becomes Eclectic interview During this interview with Joni and Klein, in the word association game, Joni responds to the cue "Peter Asher", her manager. She says that her relationship with her manager is like Noel Coward meets Winston Churchill -- blunt, confronting, conflicted. Joni laughs a big laugh, and says she's not certain if she's Coward, or Churchill. Coward went to Churchill during the war and asked to do intelligence work. Churchill, who was in a bad mood, said Coward should go sing at the front and entertain the troops, that Coward was too well-known to do serious wartime intelligence work. Coward argued that his artistic lifestyle was the "perfect cover... My disguise was my own reputation as a bit of an idiot." Coward believed the social critique which he presented in his writing gave him power over public opinion, and he became irate when he was considered to be "just an entertainer" and not taken seriously. Churchill saw Coward's talent to entertain as a roadblock to being taken seriously. Churchill thought that Coward's particular genius could only fulfill itself in its own world of artistic creation. Just a couple of Joni "sitings" today--what looked to be a Dutch import CD, with early material, but with a cover that had a wonderful picture of Joni in beret, one I haven't seen before. Just called Joni Mitchell. Anyone seen this? Then, amazingly, I was in a used CD place and just decided to check their import bin on a whim, where I found a wonderful import, can't even tell from where, but it's called, "Joni Mitchell: By the banks of the River Charles," "recorded live from 'Club 45' Cambridge, MA Jan, 1968"!!! I'm sure that some of you know all about this, and maybe it's tape tree stuff, but it was new to me (as NBC is so cleverly telling us this summer, that's all that counts!) and I love it. It even has songs I've never heard before--"Gift of the Magi," "Come to the Sunshine," "The Way it is." And all the chat introducing songs! Well, I just had to go buy myself a new guitar--a Taylor that sounds beautiful. I guess you can tell I'm having a wonderful day. As for Joni chat, here are my favorite things she said introducing stuff at Pauley, 5/21: For "Sex Kills" (and I agree that hearing it live was a revelation, made me love it as I haven't before): Joni talked about Socratic thought and how Socrates came up with a definition of "justice" that was "some kind of demented fascism." I loved this! Reading Karl Popper made me see this only a few years ago. That J. is one helluva smart gal. Then, introducing "Happiness is the Best Facelift," she made a reference to "River," and said she would soon have a whole album of "songs to suffer by at Christmas time." I've been emboldened by Pearl's (?) recap of the tapings to perhaps even include some of my concert reflections, even at this late date--next post. And, since I was so behind, I just wanted to throw in my own best wishes to Wally, whose concert reports, account of meeting Joni (which made me shiver), and announcement of his illness (which made me cry), is my man of all men right now--for the wonderful homepage that was my first experience on the Net, and for his beauty of spirit, his pure regard for J. And to Marianna, if you're still here, I'm horrified by G.'s behavior, and remember a very similar things from a boyfriend long ago--just called me up and cussed away! Couldn't believe it. What a jerk! My thoughts have been with you. Luv you all, Allison P.S.--Is the Patricia O'Connor who's posted recently the swimmer who lives in SLC and who turned in a paper once that said, "Joni Rules"? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jul 1998 18:26:08 EDT From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: JC Mitchell, Baez /NJC Grammar In a message dated 98-07-10 17:32:30 EDT, RickieLee1@aol.com writes: << wallyk wrote: "...i don't see any point in imposing grammatical standards in this context. otherwise we'd have to buy rickielee a new keyboard with a shift key..." whoa boy. hold on. have i just been slammed??? Joco & Pat do Joni far more justice than the LA Express (MOI was the last album of hers I've heard). And Amelia, what a great tune! E.T. loaned me his complete Joni collection in a kewl simulated-leather Case Logic. I listened to Song To A Seagull all day. When I told him how much I loved it, he insisted I join the JMDL. So here I am. Redeep... swampchick ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Jul 1998 03:54:38 +0100 From: catman Subject: Re: Mitchell, Baez, Collins Thou shalt not take my name in vain!!!
