"He made 87 Westerns in all, and in them, he was the coyboy who fought fair, never killed the bad guys but only shot the gun out of their hands and lived to sing about it." I did not realize that, "Mr. Rogers was a co-founder of Sons of the Pioneers, which had a couple of radio hits in the '30s, 'Tumbling Tumbleweeds' and 'Cool Water.'" So, the Joni connection is two-fold -- not just with her Roy Rogers shirt (thereby justifying her insistence that she be able to be one of the cowboys), but the Sons of the Pioneers. As a companion commentary ends, "Happy trails to you, Roy. Until we meet again." To which I would add, "So here's to you", Roy. And here's to you, Colin and John. True love is priceless. In this world where the rug can be pulled out from under you in the blind of an eye, we cherish the love that endures. So, here's to us all! Times today devotes four pages to Roy and includes some great information and photos with the Sons of the Pioneers and the stuffed Trigger and Buttermilk. (Bullet, Roy's dog, is also taxidermically displayed at the museum). Roy was an original member of the Sons of the Pioneers, which were first named the Pioneer Trio until they started making money and could afford to add new members. The Sons were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980, and Roy was inducted as an individual in 1988. Roy was born Leonard Slye in Cincinnati, Ohio. When his family hit desperate times during the Depression, they headed out to California. One night camping with other migrants along the way, Roy and his cousin starting playing mandolin and guitar and attracted a crowd. Roy recalled that "you could tell most of them hadn't smiled in a long, long time. But now they smiled, listening to the music. It made them happy; kept the dark away for a little bit. That's what I learned that night; I learned what music is for." And for all you making the Trigger jokes, even Roy's son Dusty (Roy Rogers, Jr.) still has his sense of humor at this sad time. Referring to the taxidermically preserved Trigger he smiled sadly and said that Rogers' old friends had suggested something similar for his dad. "They wanted to know if I was going to lift him up and put him atop Trigger just one more time," he said. Then he paused. "But I think there's laws against that." The principles ruling the use of whoever/whomever are not so simple. It is true that any form of whom is objective whereas any form who is applied in those cases that require a subjective pronoun. However, a preposition is not sufficient grounds to decided that whom[ever] is to be used. Observe the following examples: "Give the prize to whomever you please." "Give the prize to whoever deserves it." Both sentences are correct, even if in both a preposition precedes the personal pronoun. The objective/subjective case depends on whether the personal pronoun is to perform the role of subject or object to the verb that follows the pronoun. The preceding preposition has as an object the complete clause, thus relieving the pronoun of its duties as an objective pronoun. My name is Dave. I am 36 years old and employed in the automotive industry. I live in Pennsylvania with my wife, Denise, and our two dogs, Dewey and Maggie. I am the third and last child in my family. My sister is the co-owner and manager of a thriving veterinary practice in Minnesota and my brother is a pediatrician in Ct. My parents are happily retired in Florida. I have been a Deadhead for 23 years and have seen The Dead perform 90 times between 1979 and 1995. Some of my other interests include: music collecting and trading; the complete writings of J.R.R. Tolkien; and the films and lives of The Marx Brothers. I first heard Joni in 1983 at the age of 21. It was a friend's copy of MOA that I heard and fell in love with even though the only songs I knew of Joni's were "Help Me" and In France They Kiss On Main Street" from the radio. At that point I knew both "Woodstock" and "Both Sides" from CSN and Judy Collins and was not aware that Joni had written and recorded both. From there I slowly aquired all of her albums. I've never seen her in concert despite having attended almost 300 concerts since my first (The Outlaws) at the age of 15 in 1977. In 1993 I had tickets to see her headline the Troubadours Of Folk Tour that was cancelled. I was quite disappointed to say the least. I first joined the list when I first heard rumors of Joni's May tour which I am quite sorry I missed. I have faithfully been reading the digests and getting to "know" many of you ever since despite belonging to and keeping up with 5 other mailing lists. I have now, upon returning from a week's vacation, switched off of the digest and hope to participate a bit more than I have so far. I plan on attending the Garden show on Saturday only. I plan on arriving sometme during Richie or Lou's set, depending on traffic, parking, and finding a ticket. I refuse to pay TicketBastard $13 in service charges on top of an already outrageously priced show. I have never payed that much for ANY single concert. But since this is my first chance to see Joni (at "Woodstock" no less) I'm willing to pay the $70 or, hopefully, even less once I get there. I once bought a $60 Who ticket for $10 an hour before show time. I'll take my chances. Once inside, getting up close is not that important to me. As long as I can HEAR clearly and am somewhat comfortable in the process, that is all that matters. I will look or yu all by your shirts if you wear them and look forward to meeting you all. Well that's about it. I promise to make all future postings MUCH shorter. PS: Those of you who wrote me about Joni's complete three song set from The Last Waltz, I will be contacting you shortly. Please be patient. Thanks, Dave T. NP: Bruce Hornsby Band 7/7/96 Hartford CT. That was a digest to save. Full of lots of positive things, lots of joni stuff, and absolutely Marian, your post was AJC as far as I'm concerned. All related to Boston-fest, all Joni weekend. Ashara, it sounds like you have a great time planned. I hate to break this to you but, I can talk, boy can I talk, but I *cannot* sing, I would really make a fool of myself, there is no way I can hit one note right, not even on Happy Birthday. So, I think your theory is flawed, and like I said, *I* hate to break it to you. How exciting Marian that you get to go to Bostonfest and how bogus that you have to pay to bring your guitar. Even kids, under 2 I think, fly free if they sit on a parent's lap, at least used to be. Great you found a solution. I'd love to be there and hear you all sing but I *plan* to be very busy opening a Tea Room in Central Denver. The proverbial sh*t *will* be hitting the fan. Ashara, it sounds like such a great time, I'm feeling blue, but Oh, I"m floating along on digest 239 and conversing with WombQueen a.k.a. Laura, setting up another meet, AJC. TR - I love Pablo Neruda, I was introduced to him through that movie that came out a couple of years ago, then I got some of his poetry, he is magnificent. I also love the prose of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. JamieJake from London, good questions! And both Patricia and Cul gave some nice interpretations re: Marlena. Cul, yours being a bit more in-depth I found it quite interesting. Okay, speak to me re: the 3 great stimulants. For years, I've pondered this, because artifice and brutality always made sense to me, but innocence? Just lately, it came to me that this may be the "innocene is *not* bliss" take on things. If we bury our heads in the sand, it will go away. So we bury ourselves in our pleasures, our own situations, etc.??? Les, you are a doll, a gem of a guy. You'd get ahold of $5000. tickets and make sure everyone had a fair shot, you are cool. Being in the Springs and me in Denver, we really should meet soon. I don't remember who lives in Chicago and almost hurled when hearing Joni was coming to Chicago, but I laughed and laughed at the story. Also, Marsha thinking she had a place to stay with her good, good friend, who then wanted to "borrow" $5000.00, (Marsha, I'd pay your airfare and put you up in a *decent* hotel if you bought my tickets, so you wouldn't *have to* stay with what's his name.) Thanks for the laughs folks, it's one of the things I love about this list. Can I move in with you guys? Hey Chilihead, I got a kick out of your 4th of July menu. I have 2 sangria recipes but I like the idea of putting the fruit juice rather than the fruit in the mix (oh and I did learn... *do* take that rind off the fruit, if you put it in the sangria), and the frozen strawberries are a great idea. I add 1 cup of plain seltzer water just before serving, no sugar, and from the recipe a restaurant gave me a "floater" of banana liqueur. We call those Tofu pups, FuDogs out here. Our recipe for frozen Margaritas are: 6 oz. Tequila, 3 oz. Triple Sec, 1/2 can frozen lime juice, and a bunch of ice to almost fill the blender, then chop chop and voila! (I had already looked that up in the dictionary some time ago). Being a vegetarian for over 10 years, and then starting to eat some turkey and chicken after my son was born, I'd love your recipe for the Baked Beans. I feel the change coming on again, the migration to a vegetarian diet. Bye *for now*, (you've been warned, I will be back, ramblin' on). I hope cul will give another brillant analysis because this song has always intrigued me and made me wonder what Joni really means. My take on it is that innocence stimulates artifice and brutality, which both stem from either a lack or loss of innocence, and a jealousy of it. Artifice mocks innocence and brutality is compelled to strike it down. The three stimulants feed upon each other in an infinite, symbiotic circle. "Don't we get bored?" says artifice and brutality, as the innocent ones are fed to the lions before the cheering crowd.
