Here, the ocean representing the sub conscience or one's emotions. Aimee Mann hasn't put anything out since "I'm With Stupid," and I hear something's due this year (yeah right, like Liz Phair's album...) But yeah, that Til Tuesday stuff was great. It sounds a little dated now, (the first album mostly), but "Welcome Home" does have great songs, and "Everything's Different Now," was an amazing pop record. That was the album where she did a duet with Elvis Costello that he later recorded on "All this useless beauty." The song was "The other end of the telescope," and is a great breakup song....Aimee's good at that...it's hard for me to listen to "Everything's Different Now," because it's so sad! I don't think I've actually cried, but the end of Chalk Mark [the song], the way the sound fades out a little when Joni sings "I'm just a chalk mark in a rain storm, I'm just the beat of black wings", always makes me very melancholy. Aimee has written some of the best "portraits of disappointment" and break-up songs. Even the non-break-up songs are pretty sad. "Mr. Harris" from "Whatever" tells the story of a young woman falling in love with a much older man that has "this suit he'd never wear outside without a hat". The song challenges a lot of biases but in such a pensive, almost resigned way. A Rolling Stone reviewer once wondered how she could feel so much angst when she looked so great. TOLERATE: 1. To allow without prohibiting or opposing; permit. 2. To recognize and respect (the rights, beliefs, or practices of others). 3. To put up with; endure. it's this last definition that's the problem. this is the attitude that most _Tolerated_ people encounter. it seems to me that the ultimate aim is: "Coexistence with mutual respect for the dignity of each individual" - ------- simon - ------- two letters from children - read by OPRAH. I flew to Phoenix last weekend for the Lillith Fair gig. Liz Phair opened on the main stage, and she was good, but not great. Lots of great women making music for a huge crowd of great women listening to music. More men at the AZ show this year apparently, which is good. Throughout the day I looked around and wondered how Joni would fit in at gig like LF. There were not really any identifiable "lifers" (10 or more albums to their credit) in the line-up of musicians. (Last year's LF had Emilou Harris, but that's about as close as this has gotten.) Still, it was a great evening to be a part of, even without Joni... ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V3 #241 ************************** Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe joni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
