I have been puzzled by this song for years.>> <..............It's about plants and birds and rocks and things. -Fred > <.............. I've got it! It's like the Seinfeld show; it's about nothing. Paul I >> LOL One of my employees asked me this years ago so I dug out my notes. The song is a journey through harsh conditions, aka life. Verse 1 simply describes the environment while verse 2 shows the journey getting rougher. Verse 2 contains the sarcastic twist on "desert sun" using the word "fun" instead. In the third and last verse, water/the sea is finally found but it's just another form of desert. Even though the terrain has changed it's still the same as the songwriter repeats two lines "There were plants and birds and rocks and things/There was sand and hills and rings." This last image of the "ocean is a desert" is then applied in the key lines "under the cities lies a heart made of ground/But the humans will give no love". I take this as referring to man's alienation from the environment and each other, and suggests the earth has much to offer if the potential was recognizable. The chorus seems to refer to the solace of the journey (I've been throught the desert on a horse with no name...) as an escape (It felt good to be out of the rain....) where clarity of self is possible, (In the desert you can remember your name...) where one "can remember" your name; the horse's name is apparently irrelevant since it is, simply transportation, that is, a means to an end. This seems to agree with the third verse where the horse is set free and no longer useful in the journey "cause the desert had turned to sea". This last idea informs the title of the song "A Horse with no Name". I suppose the songwriter is making an ironic point by elevating the least important element of the journey to the title. Therefore, I would summarize by saying the song is about recognizing what's important in life's journey. Then again, I could be wrong! I leave it to critics whether the song is "good" or "bad". Any suggestions?/ Kate videodoc Hi JamieJake from London wanting to be enlightened on a coupla things. Tape Trees: What are they? Do they need cool watering? Do they only grow on paprika plains or any old cotton avenue? Little green perennial, or lame bulb? Enough already. No but seriously in DJRD Joni sings the lyric in Otis and Marlena: She taps her glass with an emery file Watching three rings in the sun The golden dive, the fatted flake And sizzle in their mink oil It's all a dream She has awake What is that about? I don't mean to show my ignorance re this matter but I just can't find any association with what she is saying to what she has said before and the images she uses are v obscure and confusing. I get the song as a whole, or at least I think I do. This may change my whole opinion on that matter. OH yes, Kate who is doing the documentary about paranoid schizophrenia (sp?). The opening bars to Two Grey Rooms (NRH, like you didn't know), seem to describe some sort of crazy journey that the character is going thru'. (try playing it on piano, my singing teacher was giving it a go and she was like, what is this chord? What is this one? Do you know what they are? (this woman was in her 60's whose husband wore a Porkpie Hat, and was curious when I brought the music to that along for her to play.) Anyway. Two Grey Rooms: a story of obsessive love, unrequited. Obsessive, yet tender, deliberate and tentative. No-one knows I'm here - ( a quietly proud statement). I hope that if you're not too bored reading this mail that you like my suggestion. Joni is out there, breathing out air. That wasn't meant to rhyme, I just didn't have the time. Neither was that. God I feel such a twat. Someone stop me before I blow. All my best to you. Have a wonderful 4th of July weekend. - -Brian PS: I am going to share my San Gria recipe: Start with 1 bottle of a good value Merlot for Red San Gria or 1 bottle of a good value Riesling, Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc Pour wine into a large bowl. Dissolve 1/4cup of sugar in 1/4 cup of Triple Sec then add to the wine. Cut up and Juice 2 ripe oranges and 2 lemons. Strain seeds before adding juice to wine. Put wine in a glass pitcher with a cover or other glass or plastic container. Let stand refrigerated for at least 4 hours, overnight is ideal. You can add strawberries and other soft fruit like grapes about 1-2 hours before serving. I also like to add fresh frozen strawberries as sweet ice cubes that don't dilute the san gria. I thought you all would appreciate this Sangria more than my traditional (except the're vegetarian)New England Baked Beans recipe. Which we are also going to have along with our veggie hot dogs, burgers, Boston Cream Pie and Pizza baked on the grill. They do a tremendous amount of good promoting folk music and dance. 2) I was at a workshop at Folk Alliance in February where Peter Yarrow and Jim....er, I'm flaking on his last name, the director of OTSFM...discussed their very successful fundraising events. One comment Jim made: "It takes as much time to raise $10,000 as it does to raise $100". 3) 425/2*5,000 = $ 1,062,500. Whew! 4) Most people going to an event like this, and willing to shell out $5,000, are going there to socialize with their philanthropic, high society friends. They aint going there to hear "The Three Great Stimulants" or "Slouching Towards Bethlehem". 5) There is no number 5. 6) Given (4) above, how about if Joni's management buys, say, four tickets and donates them to the JMDL/JMHP. Les and Wally could then either a) auction them off to raise funds to support the list and their sites, or b) give them as prizes in a contest. Either way, it would ensure that some Joni fans were in the audience. The OTSFM gets the money, Joni's management gets the tax write-off...win-win situation. I'm flying to Boston for this event and one of the problems I have is that in order to bring my guitar, I'd have to buy a seat for it on the airplane, which I can't afford. So ChuckE has checked around and found a music store which will rent me a fairly nice guitar for the weekend for only $30-$40, which seems pretty reasonable. I'm wondering if anyone else is concerned about travelling with their instrument, and I offerred to survey the attendees and potential attendees for their musical instrument needs. If you play an instrument and are planning to attend Ashara's JoniFest, please email me the answers to the following short questionnaire: 1. What musical instrument do you play? 2. Will you be bringing your instrument with you? 3. If not, would you like to have an instrument like the one you normally play available to you during the event so that you can participate in the music making? 4. Are you willing to pay for the rental of the instrument if necessary? 5. Do you have any extra instruments that you are able to bring which you could lend to others? Marian Vienna P.S. Few questions: 1: How's Wally? 2: Lori going to woodstock, do you have large carry ons? 3: Les going to Chicago, crap, guess I have to sell some Dell stock? 4: I asked some local Navajo's at the BAsha's grocery store in Window Rock, "Do you all jam to Joni on the Muzak?" "Who's Joni?" was the REply. 5: Wouldn't it be cool if they redid the 10 Commandments and Charleton Heston turned around and instead of opening the Red Sea he opens fire on the the Egyptians? 6: I went veggie for only the second time in my life, when do the runs stop? That's all the questions for right now. Great quote from my Dad who died from lung cancer after smoking Pall Mall unfiltered ciggies for 35 years. He caught me smoking cools with a filter. "You wouldn't catch me dead smoking them cancer stick with tampax on the end." The color palate used for this song is outstanding and really makes the images seem real. Silver powerlines, big blue moon, big dark horse, red tail lights, all serve to illustrate the wonders of a Hawaiian evening on July the 4th. Wishing every USA lister a safe and happy celebration. The rest of you out there have a great weekend! I highly highly reccomend it to any list-member who hasn't seen it yet. Well worth your 8 dollars...or 4 if you're going to a twilight show or have some sort of discount. Small acomplishment in my guitar skills: taking tips from the Court and Spark songbook Mark K. sent me, I tuned my guitar to open D and now can play People's Parties like on the album! I was quite proud. Esp. since I tuned it by ear since I did it rather later last night after recieving some disturbing news... Griffin has a crush on Whitney Landau, a grade-A bitch who I've disliked since seventh grade and ages before Griffin. She's so awfully mean and cruel and I felt so broken. I immediately put on "River" and cried for about a half an hour with the lights out. Then I realized...I don't care so much. I mean I do, I was crying after all. But it wasn't nearly as bad as Mother's day weekend, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. So I called him and his brother answered again. Next time I call him and his brother answers, I'm going to ask Nathan to come see me in A Chorus Line because I'm sick sick sick of playing phone tag, except I'm always "it". I am going to have a good time with or without Griffin. Which reminds me...I've got to go endorse the Spice Goiles when I buy Chelsea her present! - -love-love-love-laughing it all away- mariana ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V3 #239 ************************** Post messages to the list at Unsubscribe by sending "unsubscribe joni-digest" to ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
