the smoe server is run by individuals like les. a few people got together and
bought the equipment. like jmdl, it is not run by any members paying for the
service. the recent request for donations is for the purpose of replacing old
drives. i may not have this quite right, but my impression is that les has a
contract with a for-profit company to run the joni list, which he pays for
himself. in the case of smoe, they have their own server and their own list
software, which they bought with their own money and now they want to upgrade
it. they simply asked members to kick in a couple of dollars each to help do
so.
i'm not saying we shouldn't test it, but i don't think there's anything to worry
about here. i belong to a two (of about 30) lists run off this site and have
never had any trouble whatsoever with them (in fact, if anything, less trouble
than jmdl - never had double emails and don't experience the bouncing). one of
the lists is very low volume, the other close to the jmdl volume.

Are you saying this would be a free service to Les, without a
fee-for-use payment required by smoe.org?

I would imagine you wouldn't suggest he not test it, since you suggested
he use smoe.org...
I visited their homepage and it is sparse for info in how exactly
they charge (or don't) for the lists they host.
Whatever floats your boat and keeps the list from listing...

i assume there is a fee for use payment, but since it's a non-profit group of music
fans, it's probably cheaper. but i honestly don't know - i only pointed les to it
and he's been talking to them about what it entails.

i imagine it's very similar to what goes on with jmdl, except instead of paying a
company to run the list, you're more or less joining a co-op (and therefore
contributing funds) to run the list. these are all guesses on my part - since i've
never administrated a list, i won't pretend to be sure of what i'm saying here. i'm
assuming just like the jmdl, you didn't have to pay to join the colvin list. i
didn't have to pay to join either of the lists that i'm on, and have only been asked
to voluntarily send in a couple of dollars for this equipment fundraiser.

clever! list from listing....this really has very little to do with me personally.
it was actually that fundraising post that made me point the smoe.org out to les. i
knew he had been looking for a new provider for a while, and that post made me think
it might be possible to join up there cheaper.
here's to more listing! no, listing. or is it list from lilting? ;->
