I had NO IDEA all this stuff was being archived! I checked it out, and there's posts all the way back to '98! Remember when we were gonna put together a MLL Tribute CD? 7 years ago it was a big freakin' deal to burn your own disc. There's some embarrassing stuff on that list, I'm sure (like Rachel getting mad at me for reviewing a nonexistent ML bootleg) but the good news is, it'd take half your life to reread everything! And yes, that Jabberjaw track has always been one of my favorites on my personal ML mix tape. Although bootleg taping - let alone trading - is an offence against copyright law, in my experience, the only times it's ever an issue are: a) if the bootlegs are such bad quality it would reflect badly on the artist; b) if the bootlegs are of material the artist would prefer to forget (not an issue with MLL, but some people who've changed direction hate having their past dragged up); c) if the bootlegs are similar to a live album the artist plans to release at some point and your trading might detract from sales; d) if the bootlegs are CD/DVDs produced by organised crime syndicates. In my experience as Communications Officer for the Metropolitan Police, the only one that is ever really an issue is d); since criminal intent is almost impossible to prove in the other three cases, the case becomes a civil tort between yourself and the artist for potential loss of earnings. I really can't see MLL (or Elliott Smith's executors) suing anyone. However, since every single person on this list knows her email address, if you're in any doubt whether she'd mind, just ask! She (or someone) might even be willing to do what the TV Personalities are now doing, and put the most frequently bootlegged material on the website as MP3s to save fans the hassle of taping. Aidan >Mary Lou would pipe up if she thought it wasn't cool. As far as I know, Mary Lou has always been cool with it. :-) ------------------------------ End of jinglejangle-digest V8 #39 *********************************
